Captain's Fury: The Codex Alera: Book Four

We received this order in good time. The condition of the CD was good, some skipping, but no worse than any other audio book we have listened to and better than many. The price was fantastic! We are very happy with this purchase and supplier. Obviously we are happy with the book or we wouldn't have ordered #3 in the series. We will be ordering #4 also!

Loved the weave of multiple characters and the storylines. I read all five books in the series and double checked then triple checked that there weren't more. I liked that the characters who had extraordinary powers still had the same struggles that an average person would have

a great series. each character must face the impossible over and over to survive personally and to give their land a chance to face yet another challenge to their existence. Jim Butcher delivers the intensity of the Dresden files to this series. i could not put it down. read all 5 books in a row. it was a joy for a scifi fan.

Enjoy the adventures presented in each book.
Using the kindle to order and read makes it so convient.
I can now read and then review again to fill in some areas that I didn't remember reading the first time.
I have all the series and waiting for any further books.

Butcher is a master of a series. His character development takes time and you are allowed to experience it as the reader. The continuing journey - the politics - the unfolding of the back story are revealed in the most turbulent situations. This leaves the reader wanting for more. Lucky for me and you if would like to embark on this journey that is just a click away. At least for now.

Jim Butcher never disappoints! Watching Tavi grow into manhood in this series is such a roller coaster. No one Tavi encounters is exactly who they seem to be; which causes so many unexpected situations that I'm always looking for who is going to surprise him (and me) next.
But my favorite character is Kitai. She says exactly what's on her mind at every opportunity. What she says may seem like sarcasm at times, but the fact that she is being completely serious has left my sides aching with laughter.
This series is so different than what I expected. I'm a huge fan of the Dresden series, and I assumed that the Calderon series would run along the same vein. It doesn't, and I'm glad because it is a wonderful body of work on its own.
Can't wait to read the next book!
However, I'm disappointed that the uniforms Tavi is depicted in on the books' covers aren't how they are described in the books. Butcher does such a good job of painting these mental scenes and settings in all of his work, it just seems a shame to draw the cover otherwise. Just saying...
But it doesn't take away any of the word magic Butcher performs.

I prefer Jim Butcher's Dresden series. This was okay. I read all 6 books in the series. They were fun reading and enjoyable. Enjoyed the characters and the developing friendships. Also that the characters could grow to be more themselves.

Seemed very long and drawn out as it focused only a few scenes. The three or so scenario's we gone over and over again. Could have cut the book short and been to the point. Butcher always does his best writing in the last several pages. I think I'm going to take a break from this series and come back to it at a later date.

Butcher weaves an incredibly indicate story. His characters are intriguing & well conceived. The transition between characters' story lines can sometimes seem abrupt but the resolution becomes believable & satisfying.

Love this series and I was very reluctant to read them being a huge Dresden fan. It is well paced, the concept of furies is truly cool and to my knowledge very original in the way he is using them. The characters are well developed and there are hints of secrets on top of the adventure you are on that he cleverly reveals bits of in each book. Thanks Jim Butcher!

This book takes us to the next level concerning Tavi, and the rest of the characters in the series. I enjoyed the first two, and number three was not a disappointment. Jim Butcher is talented when writing about fantasy, and this series is fun to read. Can't wait to get to book 4.

The growth of the main characters in making decisions instead of following orders make this book on of the best in the series. The Vord is that enemy you love to hate and makes the phrase "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" a reality.

This series is very engaging. Intriguing, fast paced with characters that become real. A very fun read, worth the time. Like the Dredsen serious, Jim Butcher create a complex world with believable characters.

The ongoing saga of Tavi and his compatriots takes another glorious step forward as intriguing plotlines and shocking character developments are intricately weaved into place to propel this tale into epic territories. A must read for any fantasy lover that rivals even Tolkien at his best.

Recommended for those long winter nights. Nice characters, twists and turns in the story will not dissapoint , heroes face enough hardache and come up winning without loosing credibility.

I have found myself enthralled and completely immersed in this story. As Tavi grows his role as a cursor, you get to see the adolescent growth that takes place through the events going on. I hope to continue the same place of plot within the next book of the series!

The Codex Alera series is moderately entertaining if you don't care much about the quality of writing or storytelling. If those matter to you, however, you'd be better served elsewhere.

For fans of Butcher's other novels (The Dresden Files, primarily), you may walk away disappointed in Codex Alera. The writing is not up to Dresden Files standards, and the world, characters, and plot elements feel completely derivative of other works. Where Dresden triumphs against impossible odds by outwitting, out-maneuvering, and occasionally out-stuborning his opponents, the cast of Codex Alera trip over victory amidst certain defeat, through accidents of circumstance, deus-ex-machina, or sudden, inexplicable incompetence in the villains. Major plot events feel forced into the story in order to support the intended conclusion, rather than the conclusion organically arising from the course of events.

If Codex Alera had been written before Dresden Files, I would have excused it as an early work where Butcher was building his skills, but 6 of the Dresden Files novels predate Codex Alera (all of which are better written). It feels to me like these series were written by completely different authors.

I started reading this series because I am all caught up on the Dresden books and am waiting for the next one. From Book One the series has really grabbed me. Totally different from Dresden but still wicked good.
