Do yourself a favor and read this series in order. So much of each book is predicated on the previous ones that at this stage (book 5) you would be lost very quickly. Beside that this book is a fast read and lots of fun with yet another new character to meet at the very end. Enjoy!

An excellent book in the Codex Alera, shadowed only by it's successor First Lord's Fury. The entire series is a great read. It's not The Wheel of Time, but it's a great series for anyone interested in reading fantasy.

The whole Codex Alera series is 1) mostly predictable 2) obviously derived from other great books and 3) a whole lot of fun!! I am really enjoying this series and will be sad to finish it. If he write more, I will read them!

Putting this same review on all books in the series because I can't remember book-by-book specifics. This series is really good! Good characters that I found myself rooting for the whole time, great magic system, and surprises abound throughout!

The story is enjoyable but the Audible version is for this book is bad. Sometimes it sounds like the narrator's words are edited on top of each other and in at lease one scene it sounded like someone was playing the drums in the background

This guy's book sucked away 27 straight hours from my life. I read this book in one complete sitting. I could not book it down. Butcher obviously enchanted his tail with some fiendish wizardy to spell bind the unwitting reader. I tried to give this one start, but the magic comples me...

The next layer of the onion has just been peeled. Tavi has come a long way since Calderon. Now a leader, a formidable fighter, and a fury crafter. He rescues the remnants of an entire nation from the dreaded Vord, and it isn't even the final book yet!

Great series, this is the part in the Codex Alera series that wouldn't stand well as a book alone requiring you to read the rest of the series. Book is great itself the main downfall I think is Kate Reading reading it. She's a very animated and talented reader however many of the character have deep gravely voices and she cannot replicate it with great success.

Love this series, amazing that it's the same author as the Dresden Files, the writing style is so different, the cadence and rhythm ... everything.

Given that and how much I love Dresden you'd think that'd be a bad thing but it's not. :)

Jim Butcher's Codex Alera series is a great read. If you like military fiction / fantasy don't miss reading this series. The tie in to Roman tactics and practices, along with the "magic" of the Furies is excellent.
