The story idea was good, but the book just dragged on and on for me. It didn't really get to the point until halfway in. The repetitive use of slang was pos-i-tute-ly annoying as were the main characters.

3.5 Stars.
What I liked: The plot was interesting - it reminded me a bit of Kresley Cole's Arcana books, but set in the 1920s and with a different, slightly less dark mythology. I liked the characters, especially Theta and Henry and Memphis.
What I didn't like: The love triangle was unnecessary. I also felt like the characters' stories didn't come together as much as I expected in this book, and there were large chunks of the book where characters went totally MIA. I also felt like the book didn't need to be quite as long as it was. I think it might've been more effective to introduce some of the characters in a later book.
I'll definitely would recommend this and will read the next book in the series even though I didn't love everything about this book.

This book kept my attention, not many books do. The Diviners had me looking forward to finding time to continue to read and made me a little jumpy at noises around me because I was so into the book. Loved this book!!

A strange conflux of Prohibition era sensibilities and the wild abandon of magic that seems so out of place in the big city. Bray's style is enthralling, captivating, and utterly human at the same time. A must-read.

I loved this book! I love the historic references. The story weaves through the streets of New York City during one of the most interesting periods in its history. Evie seeks adventure and excitement and boy does she get it! I had a blast reading and traveling back in time.

This was my first time reading a Libby Bray book. I am an adult and at 43, at first I was a bit put off by the fact that this book was listed as a teen book. But, after reading the free eleven chapters I was hooked and committed to buying it.
What a great book! I loved the story line, loved the Evie character. The writing was very visual; it read like a movie (and on that note, I am pretty sure someone already thought of that, and if there is a movie I will watch it!). I could tell that the author spent alot of time researching details of daily life in the 20's. Evie's 20's dialogue/slang was very entertaining. Naughty John was a totally scary character, and there were a few nights where I did look over my shoulder going to bed after reading a few chapters. LOL Ms. Bray is a very good writer. There were some descriptive passages that lifted up to prose, and I would take a moment to re-read a sentence and say "wow that is well done".
Ms. Bray did a great job of setting me up for a sequel without making me feel short changed. I think of all the characters I am most curious about Jericho. I want to know more about how he became the way he is, and more about the government project (I am leaving out details so as not to give spoilers!). Also, we know Theta did something to her husband, but what? And what is the connection between Will and Ms. Walker? I think they may have been teen diviners in the past themselves, but that is still to be determined. Now that I am curious about all of these questions and more, I look forward to the sequel that is most surely coming!
There is a bit of sexual content and gore in this book, but its subtle and nothing that today's teens don't already know about. I wouldn't let my nine year old read it but it would be fine for anyone 13+.
So the only question I have is, when can I have the next one? :-P Great book!

This book has so much depth and intrigue. Fully developed characters you can't help rooting for. The author does an amazing job at describing and pulling you into the past. Libba Bray is definitly one of my new favorite authors! Can't wait to read more!!!

I recieved this item and was not entirely pleased with it. The product was described as like new and the product pages had some dirt on them, the stickers on the back of the dust jacket were not easily removable and so I have sticker remains on the back of the cover, and the dust jacket was curled in some areas. This was not as described and not in like new condition.
Otherwise I'm excited to read the book as I have heard wonderful things about it.

An excellent and compelling work blending historical fiction.and the macabre-.loved the young adult fiction heroine who was both fierce and flawed as well as feminine . Evangeline is a protagonist for young readers to follow!

The Diviners has excellent writing that capturse the twenties with language, references to real places and events and an excellent story. This book has something for everyone: love, atmosphere, great characters, mystery and the occult.

I've never read anything so satisfying
and terrifying at the same time. This book is pure genius.
Creepy crawlies is the right word to describe the feelings you receive while reading this book.

The book grabs your attention in the opening chapter with an interesting party; then the scence switches to New York City; what a letdown. I mean the book starts with an excellent story. Yet, when Evie goes to New York, the author seems to be telling a different story. Also, the main character disappears for chapters at a time. The Diviners has outstanding parts, but the author does have some noticeable gaps in her work.

I would have appreciated a warning so I could choose if I wanted to read this book anyway.
It was an absolutely wonderful story, well written with a diverse and interesting array of characters. The immersion in 1920s culture was extremely enjoyable and the climactic scene was everything a reader could ask for. And instead of a few paragraphs afterwards before the book ends, we got to go visit all our characters and see how they were doing, which was great ...except for one scene.
Spoilers ahead
One character kills her pet cat just for a divination that was completely pointless as she'd been saying the exact same "storm is coming/bad things are coming" line all through the book.
I know 1920s people for the most part viewed animals, even pets, as objects they could do with as they pleased. Animal cruelty wasn't something they thought about. (To be fair many people viewed their children the same way.)
And there is a scene where a bad guy magically kills a rabbit, which didn't bother me nearly as much. But that was because the rabbit wasn't his pet--an animal he'd taught to trust him. He was not one of the good guys as the woman who killed her pet was portrayed. And no one in reality could duplicate how he killed the rabbit, when how she killed her own cat could easily be duplicated by someone in real life.
I would not have chosen to read this book had I known that scene was in there. Now I have that imagery in my head and I don't appreciate it. I will not be reading the rest of the series and I doubt I will be reading any more by this author.

Against the background of the 1920s, the wither weaves an enticing narrative of the occult, ritual murders, flappers, prohibition, New York City, and all that jazz. I don't want to spoil any of the story by going into the tales details. I do want to highly recommend this book and say that it is extremely well written. Unputdownable too!
