The book gives a general idea about VBA capabilities for those who have no previous knowledge whatsoever NONE.
However, the author makes the readers jump back and forth from one chapter to another using notations such as "(which I discuss in Chapter XX)" moreover, the Author often recommends visiting MS Help site (so what is the benefit of the book?)
The book lacks examples.
A great contribution I found in this book are the author's tips based on personal experience.

As usual, Walkenbach hits it out of the park. If you've never used VBA and need to learn the basics, this is a very good place to start. From here you can move on to a bigger and more intimidating book (Walkenbach has one of those too), or just consult Google as needed like everyone else does.

Note that this book is explicitly intended as an introduction, and is in no way a complete guide to VBA programming, but it doesn't pretend to be. I mention this only because there's always one guy who gives a book like this a one-star review and complains that it doesn't contain every last detail.

The book is an introduction to VBA programming, however what I have learned after reading it has been so useful in my every day work that I feel "empowered". I handle a lot of excel reports, and I've been able to write a dozen of macros, more than 500 lines of code, that is time you invest, and time you will save later automating repetitive tasks. Of course you won't find all the answers in one book, but if you combine it with forums such as superuser.com you'll do great.
THE GRAVE: An intense, gripping crime thriller :: The Fireproof Girl (Sophie Shields Book 1) :: I Want My Hat Back by Jon Klassen (2012-09-03) :: I Don't Know How She Does It :: A Western Holiday Romance Novella (Long Valley Book 2)

Easy to read and understand. This book will get you up and running quickly, but stops there. As an advanced Excel user, I still feel like I don't know VBA for Excel. In order for me to progress I will need to actually start using it on a project that is meaningful. Just like everything else, I guess.

It is a perfect book for beginners. Every thing is clear and explained step by step. I finished the book and already started with more complex ones and i can say that the basics of coding i got from this book is helping me learn quickly the more complex features.

I had a need to build some VBA spreadsheets fast -- this book helped a lot. I work on a Mac, so some of the examples have to be reverse engineered to fit the slightly different methods between the two OS (Win vs. Mac) -- they are pretty close, and Google combined with this book is a good programmers reference.

Pros:
Easy to read.
Great for beginners.
Easy to navigate (table of contents/index easy to understand).
Cons:
It is good for beginners, for the more advanced processes it is not all that helpful.
Dumbs it down alot and makes it seem somewhat childish for people who already understand how excel/VBA work.

Overall, it is a good product. I was hoping it would be more in depth but it will get the job done. It gives you the basic tools you need to code in excel VBA, and helps the user understand how it all works.

I've never have done any macro programming (basically a dummy in that respect) but forced into it at work I started here. About a 1/3rd of the way through the book I was up and running and able to accomplish what I set out to do. I've not finished reading it yet but from my perspective it has been a great help. This is a real good place for a newbie to start out.

The Kindle version fully deserves two stars or less because of the illegible code snippet screenshots. They are 100% unusable.

If I were rating the dead tree version with full legibility I would mark 4+ stars as the book is well written and fully delivers on its intended purpose.

This book is very well explained and perfect for some one who doesn't have a good background in programming. I've been reading it for about 2 months and I can easily perform different tasks using VBA.

I also should mention that knowing VBA can really distinguish you from any other person in you career since it makes everything much easier! I strongly recommend start learning VBA using this well structured, easy and inexpensive book.

It was a good introduction and walk through the with most of the via functionality. I do wish he spent more time explaining the VBA language structure, as once I understood it more things really started to make sense

Very simple examples provided. Easy to apply to everyday needs in Excel. Finding the sample code and cheat sheets on line was difficult. The link for these resources printed in the book redirects you to Wiley's site for purchasing more of its books. I had to contact their product support to get a link to the materials, and even then I was only able to access some of the sample code provided by the author.

The book is well structured and easy to advance between the chapters without losing itself. I extremely recommend to anybody wants to start in the programing world. The author is an expert in the theme and show his knowledge in this book

For non Excel VBA beginners like myself, this book is a very good starting point. John covers all of the basics with clear, concise explanations and then follows up with code snippets and valuable real world advice. I would recommend that beginners like me thoroughly read the first 2 x chapters which explain the VBA editior, Functions, Procedures...etc before you dive in and start coding. In particular, have a good look at Variables before you start. You will probably save yourself some time and grief in the long run. I personally found the chapter on Controlling Program flow (Chap 10) invaluable after trying for some time to loop through a range of cells without success. Within half an hour or reading this chapter I was able to correct the code I had written to enable looping through and converting a range of 10 figure Grid References to 6 figure Grid References and then output the new values onto the active spreadsheet. If you are from Australia like I am, you won't regret paying the extra few dollars. I thoroughly recommend this book if you are a VBE newbie like myself!
