3.5/5: Well blow me down with a feather! Never would I freely have bought this book, it's not my genre and not why I read. I have plenty of fear, violence, horror and fantasy in the office daily, I really don't need to read it in my spare time. I did not know anything about the author, I still don't although I think she's/they're young. The language skips to colloquial parlance often but it is in keeping with the age of the protagonist. The plot is thin but interesting enough to hold attention throughout the book. I missed the depth in conversations and felt the author got waylaid with the internal conversations. My biggest disappointment is my usual pet peeve, I am getting tired of all heroes being perfect and talented. The women are super and the men are fantastic. Er, that's not life but then we read to escape the normal, don't we. Although I did like the character of Damien and I found Deb to vacillate too much. I loved Loki who I have great hopes of becoming a bigger source of inspiration to Ella Grey. I have always enjoyed Sci-Fi in movies but never read them. My earlier attempts into this genre were not successful but perhaps Ms Faith will tempt me to proceed.

Great tight story line, superb characters. Ella Grey died for eighteen minutes and somehow picked up a supernatural hitchhiker before she revived. Finding out that she needs this presence to finish the search for her missing brother is quite a shock, along with discovering that her powers are growing. Demons, gargoyles and witches- oh , my ! Enjoy this gem of a book.

The premise is great, I love the idea behind the book. That said the pacing is slow and the writing is weak. I read about a fourth then started skimming. At about the halfway point, I couldn't even do that and skipped to the end.

There are so many good books out there, don't waste your time on this one.

I think it could've been worthwhile if the entire book wasn't slowly trying to play catch up with the synopsis written here to get you to buy the book. The writing and story are okay, but it's really disappointing when you already know all of the answers she spends the entire book trying to find.

Ella died and returned to the living with a passenger, a reaper. A member of the demon patrol, she is searching for her missing brother. As the reaper tries to take her over, he does give her a glimpse of her brother. Ella needed to be a little more badass for me. Good story, fun side characters.

genre: fantasy
setting: alternate contemporary
format: standalone, but expect sequels

Plot summary: explore an alternate fantasy / contemporary universe through the eyes of an impulsive law enforcement officer.

This book's writing is good, but the plotting needs work. So, expect to enjoy the prose and setting while scratching your head in confusion about some of the major plot elements. Like what is this "reaper" who is mentioned in the author's book blurb? At 65% of the way through the book, we the reader know less than you do right now. Several nifty ideas that could have been fascinating strengths in the book are barely described (like the reaper who has a bit part, the hellhound whose only power seems to be glowing eyes, and what is up with the pulsing forehead?) Several people have odd quirks that don't fit, like her new partner being gay (which comes across as a lame excuse for why she flirts with every other male she meets but not her partner). Another example is the main character's hatred & distrust of her uncle, which is based on no facts whatsoever, and yes that includes after she actually meets the guy and reacts with open hostility on several occasions. Seriously this guy has the patience of a saint.

By personality, the leading lady has no impulse control and a personality that really, really does not suit being an officer of the law. She is constantly failing to do her job of upholding the law, and this just as constantly gets her into less trouble than it ought to. If this whimsy will bother you, I strongly suggest you avoid this book. If you can live with this (and her boss's inexplicable choice not to fire her), then you will likely greatly enjoy the book.

Having harped way too long on the weaknesses, let me emphasize that this book is very well written (good prose) and quite entertaining. The universe is interesting.

I was torn between a 2 or 3 star rating and, ultimately, I opted for a 2-star rating because, frankly, I won't be reading the sequels. My conundrum over the rating is simple - there's nothing really wrong the book, but there isn't anything really right about it either. The characters were okay, the story was okay, everything was just okay. Mundane. Unmemorable. Boring. The story was light on the action and heavy on the planning. And there was no real sense of danger in the story whatsoever, which is a critical ingredient in this genre. The characters talked a lot about what they were going to do. And they ate a lot. And the protagonist cleaned her house a lot. I'm surprised I wasn't forced to read the protagonist's shopping list. There is a better, more exciting way to tell this story, I'm sure, but that's not the version published in these pages. And that's sad because there is a promising premise here that was lost in poor execution. I think this author worked hard to produce a coherent story, which is a feat in iteself, and I respect the effort that clearly went into it. But it just fell flat for me. 2 stars

This is the second series by Jayne Faith that I have read, and I have been patiently waiting its release. I was fortunate enough to get an advanced copy, and I could not put it down.

Ella died... for 18 minutes until she came back to life, and she has not been the same since. This first book has her not only fighting to figure out what is happening to herself, but also to the brother of a young friend she meets along the way while still desperately searching for her brother who was kidnapped. As some other reviewers have stated, the beginning may feel slightly slow, but I believe it carefully sets up the "stage" for the story. There are a lot of details that would be missed if the pace were much quicker in the very beginning. It picks up the pace once the background is established and carries on steadily throughout the rest of the book.

I definitely enjoy Jayne's writing style and look forward to reading the next in this series!

Also be sure to check out Sapient Salvation, another one of her series that just absolutely sucks you into its parallel world.

This book was okay. Some parts of it were difficult to get through because there was very little or no real discernable tension. I did feel like some of the characterization was weak. First, I didn't get why Ella avoided her uncle, at least before she called to meet with him. Yes, her mother, brother, and grandmother didn't trust him but she, effectively, didn't even know him. Frankly, after her three relatives were out of the picture, which had been for several years, you'd think that curiosity would've gotten the best of her, especially since she didn't really know her father. It just didn't ring true for me that she would've avoided him based on the opinions of people who hadn't been in her life for many years. Second, while the author made her uncle out to be awful once Ella did meet with him, his characterization was based on a two rather brief conversations. Again, it was a little hollow. Further, Deb, her best friend also wasn't characterized that well. I'm not a writer, so I don't know how Jayne Faith could have improved it, but even after reading the first book, she doesn't seem much more than a random character in the book. I didn't care that much about her and, in fact, thought she was kind of stupid. Speaking of stupid, I thought that Ella, who is supposed to be a strong, independent woman, was, in fact, pretty stupid, too, in several instances. I thought the characterization of Johnny and Damien were much better.

The second problem I had with this book was its significant lack of active tension. I mean, the author tried to convey tension through some introspection and dialog, but it didn't ring wholly true for me. There was also not much real action. In fact, there was way too much background, especially in the first chapters, that caused me to set the book down and come back to it later.

Anyone who compares this book to Ilona Andrews is stretching the truth--a lot. Kate Daniels is kicka**--Ella is anything but.

I liked the story but the problem was that the author keeps repeating information she already stated. This happens numerous times. There's no need to explain a term every time you use it. I couldn't wait to finish. Doubtful that will read the next one.

I appreciate, but I'm also tired of angry, generally rude and foul mouthed, but super powerful heroines wifh out of control libidos. Ellen Grey was a much more realistic heroine who kept surprising me with her generally rational restrained behavior in the face jerks and irritating everyone she talked to, yet was straightforward and strong. Being portrayed as having weak magic and using other skills, not just brute force was also refreshing (but yes, I know in the future her magic will strengthen). Her common sense about behavior, especially about both men and women relationships was also commendable. Like her hell-doodle, gargoyle, and human friends, I like her, so it is off to book 2.

Cold Stone Magic (Ella Grey Series Book 1)
by Jayne Faith
100% 5 stars

We are dropped into a world where Ella is a demon hunter. Demons walk freely amongst the Earth. September 11th 2001, something devastating happened in the U.S. The building (Gregori Institute) that is like its own sovereign nation, had an accident and a rift open the worlds. Nobody knows if this was the companies fault, but it also let a couple of virus’ run wild. Vamp1/Vamp2 and Necro1/Necro2 were the vampire virus, and zombie virus. Zombies had to be euthanized, but vampires were able to be semi neutralized. Magic was freely used, some people had allot, such as mages, and some had almost none. There were also humans too. Humans and magic users often didn’t commingle. People were frightened of magic users and didn’t want anything to do with anyone who used it. But this is just some of the awesome world building that takes place, this isn’t even about the story. That is partially why this book is so well written.

Ella lost her brother years back when a demon picked him off and flew off with him. This is why she became a demon cop, so she had access to things she wouldn’t normally have. She has quite an eclectic array of friends, and she is willing to break the rules for the right reasons. Ella isn’t overly lovable, not dislikable, just a normal average person with the lowest level magic possible. VERY ordinary! Very relatable.

Walking to the store at night she comes across this girl who is begging for her help. Her brother was taken?…eaten?…possessed?…????? She doesn’t know. He was swallowed by a Gargoyle who was engineered to consume higher level demons. So somehow the bother became possessed and the Gargoyle did his/her job. They have never seen anything like this, but to complicate matters even further, Gregori instituted claims it, picks up the statue, and nobody has access to it. Ella has a way in using special connections. Trying to make up for the loss of her brother and inability to find him, she works her tail off to find a way to help out this girl who truly only has her brother left in the world. This book is about the journey to get him back, and her passion to find her brother…at ALL cost. There is a bazillion things that go on throughout this book. I think any person who gives it a try will honestly be shocked at the back stories, the world building skills, and all else going on in this book.

OH….and did I tell you that Ella was dead before any of this happened? LOL read up…I think you will enjoy it!!

One of the best things I thought with this book was the heroine was, yes , your usual, kick butt demon catcher police person with the not go with the system. BUT, what made her stand out was she wasn't some "rare prodigy " of supernatural talent, nor did she acquire or discover she could do super amazing no other being could do talents!!
in fact, she had the barest amount of magic allowed to be part of the demon police unit.
what did make her different is that in a routine job situation, she died and was dead for 18 minutes before coming back. eventually, she realizes something not quite right happened when she came back, and it isn't pleasant nor welcome, but she has reasons to hang on to the situation.
Also, what is great, is she has her angst, with a past, a not great childhood, yet it doesn't color her whole life and make her snarky and whiney and hate the whole world and bitter as many urban fantasy heroines tend to end up being. It seems to be a great balance...
Love the dog, and the addition at the very end.
really no romance, more the hints of it, with a very obvious person, and that would be the only thing I would change.
the connection between her and the evil organization is also a great touch and I am sure will lead to great plots in future books.
Great start, and things didn't end on a cliffhanger, but you can see where the series could develope into so much more.
editing was done well overall.

I made it to book 3... made it. Meaning i was hoping the main character, Ella Gray would grow a brain and stop being such a bitch. Everything pisses her off and it gets real old. The author seems to have given her the personality of someone who is selfish and quickly jumps to conclusions. But, by book 3, she just got worse.

There are many standards in a book like this.
The cover has a bright purple or blue or green essence with snapping swirls, and a strong, fighting woman in black. But, I know, don't judge a book by it's cover.

However, while I don't immediately see the character in the cover, what I did get was a great story. A complex woman, with believable and very real faults, and a problem. She's thrown into an issue, with a scared girl, and the woman makes honest mistakes. She doesn't know everything, and she can't do everything, but she tries. With whatever people she can scrap together, each one of them a fascinating, imperfect story ready to be cracked like a golden egg, she attempts to save them.

I found myself rooting for her, and still knowing that there was a very real chance she could fail. This author was brave enough to let us know that she won't win it all, and she doesn't always win. I'll definitely be following to see what happens next.

An exciting magical mystery that left me guessing till the end.
Ella came back from the dead but she didn't come alone. A creature from the other side hitched a ride. She finds herself in a race against time to not only save herself but also to find her missing brother and help a young girl to save her brother before it's too late.
I loved the mystery and how the story flowed. It had an unique storyline and I liked the variation of paranormal creatures. This isn't your average fantasy read it's original, dark and interesting!
The characters were interesting and fun to read. I definitely can't wait to read more and discover what's going to happen to Ella next!

I'm not going to rehash the plot, you can read the description for that. I picked this title as the author was compared to Kim Harrison. This story excited me as much as Harrison's first Hollows book. The comparison is valid.

Excellent world building with a cast of familiar (and favorite) supernatural creatures.

Well developed characters that now have me invested in what comes next. My only regret is stumbling on a new series that's still at the book one stage. I hate waiting but gladly will. Can't wait for book two!

My only negative comment is about minor typos but they were never jarring enough to hinder my enjoyment of the tale.

This book felt like it wasn't an actual book, but rather a set up for future books. We were barely introduced to characters and the stand alone plot (vs the overarching plot) was very thin. Even the resolution to the stand alone plot seemed kind of eh, without anything really to it other than a minor confrontation. The world and overarching plot were interesting enough that I would have continued if the next book were kindle unlimited, but it is definitely not worth spending money on.

I greatly appreciate the opportunity to have an advanced copy of this book. Really loved the story, but for my taste it was a little slow moving. I'm chucking it as..."it's the first book of the series". I've come across many books that started out like this and hooked me all the way to the end of the series. The story is flowed and the main character, Ella, isn't the type of heroin that started out strong and then falls in to the damsel in distress type. She progressed throughout the book as independent, but if she needs help, she asks for help. I enjoyed the variations from mystery, drama, suspense, some light comedy, and a sprinkling of romance. I can't wait to see what kind of adventure Ella and her group of friends get in to. Definitely will recommend this book to my book club friends.

Great concept in the land of demons patrolman Ella is on the Demon Patrol sending demons back to he'll until one day fighting a arch demon she died for 17 minutes and came back to life. But not alone. You 'll love the story and some sexual tension she has with her friend Johnny while trying to rescue a girl's brother trapped in a gargoyle. Thank God no gratuitous sex scenes to interfere with the story. If you want that go read Laurel Hamilton's Anita Blake series!! Little to no story just sex which is sad because it was a great series in the beginning. Enjoy!!

The book tells a story that is engaging. Nice to read a good story. I was able to enjoy it because it avoided most of the bad cliches of the genre; women so in lust they can't think straight, tortuous secret keeping, reckless self destructive behavior. I almost passed on the book expecting those behaviors. The author has developed a female main character with strengths and flaws moving in a coherent story. A bit close to the line on self perceived guilt driving reckless behavior and secret keeping. Maybe the author thinks readers expect obvious plot devices to drive conflicts? This is a good story and will be a better series if some genre staples are retired.

This is an interesting and competent world creation. Set in the future, (45 years or so) this is a world torn apart by rifts that allow demons to enter this plane. Small imps create chaos and larger demons can possess people. Ella Gray is a beat cop with a minor magical talent. Her job is to patrol for imps and destroy them. Unfortunately she is not alone in her body, as something came back with her after a near death experience. Ella has a good heart and this story involves her aiding others in need. Great friends and dodgy semi-villians make this an interesting and realistic adventure. Glad there's a sequel.

I read the first 2 volumes and I'm looking forward to the next in the series .A little long winded a few times but a good story. An example of padding: the action is " I got a couple of cups of coffee for us anticipating a long night" the verbiage blossomed into two long sentences about where the coffee was obtained and an unnecessary description of its heat. Still, I enjoyed the first two in the series. The Boise, Idaho setting had the added attraction (for me, at least) of being very authentic and bringing back fond memories of my time there.

Enjoyed the book but it was a bit predictable and cliched. Very easy read and if you are looking for something light but still in an Urban Fantasy genre then this won't disappoint. A little humor, not really a big element. A little mystery, but mostly action/adventure. I got caught up expecting more to happen on the mystery front. A glance or a revelation would lead me to expect some some kind of clue or "aha!" and that didn't really play out.

I received Stone Cold Magic as a review copy from the author/publisher. The gifting did not determine the review/rating, which reflects my honest opinion. I have to say, I really enjoyed the characters and plot for this fast-paced story. The female protagonist was intelligent, yet vulnerable-- a nice change from the bad sass heroines who feel they should do it alone with out asking for help. Ella had no problem calling on her friends and working as a team, which gave the readers a nice selection of personalities to enjoy. Some very imaginative worldbuilding -- Well done, I'll be looking for more work by this writer.

Ella has low level magic and is part of the Daemon Patrol. Unfortunately, she died and came back with an unwelcome clinger. In her search for her brother, for the past five years, the clinging entity gives her a clue as to his whereabouts. But, it's only a glimpse. During a routine call for help she meets with a young girl who's in a similar situation. Her brother is trapped inside a gargoyle. She must find a way to free him. She enlists a bunch of colleagues to free him. It won't be easy and comes with several price tags. The entity attached to her is eating her soul.

Great storyline and the characters are realistic, creative, and fascinating. Readers will love the unique flavours of this book. I can't wait to see more.

I really enjoyed the book. Entertaining and well written. I'm always jazzed when a seemingly predictable story line takes an unpredictable turn. Although not on a grand scale, per say, this story did that early on with Ella changing her mind on a course of direction. And for me that's all it took to commit myself to explore not just this first installment but subsequent and or previous works as well. Hoping to encounter more left turns when I think the story is going to make that proverbial right turn.

I really enjoyed the story and look forward to reading more in the series. You have some great characters and a storyline that just keeps getting more interesting with each surprise. Ella has returned from the dead and is on the same mission to find her missing brother. This time she has some help and quite a choice to deal with as one resource might end up killing her. Ella is a great character who has a lot of strength and compassion. Her romanctic endeavors tend to be pretty intense too.

I am voluntarily reviewing a copy I received.

I really enjoyed this book! From the beginning, the characters draw you in and you want to know what will happen next and where it is all going. Ella starts out as a loner, with only one real friend, but throughout the story she adopts new 'family' (her new partner, the sexy investigator, the young girl that reminds her of her lost brother, the hell-doodle). Paranormal genre isn't my first go-to when I am looking for a book to read, but I am looking forward to reading the continuation of this series.

Vampires, witches ,gargoyles and demons, this book has it all. Ella Gray is a demon catcher, part of a supernatural police force. While on the job she died and came back 18 minutes later, changed. when she came back from the dead, she didn't come back alone. Now she struggles to understand what came back with her and also find her brother, who has been missing for 5 years. An epic adventure with humor and attraction thrown in. I can't wait to find out what happens next!

Solid four star rating. This was a new kind of read for me. I love reading where the heroine is a badass with great powers but this one's heroine didn't have those features (not in this first novel anyways) but it was refreshing and a new twist. I'm not exactly sure who the hero is yet as there's many male players in the game but am very interested to see who it will be. I would recommend this new series to others. I'm also looking forward to the next installment.

Finally! A book that balances good and evil, and hope and despair! I'm so over the books in which the main character has such a run of insurmountable bad luck and horrible events, the like of which make me want to throw my kindle in the washing machine.
I don't mind conflict, a book must have some, but hope seems to be a forbidden commodity in this day and age.
And I hope that the next book comes out soon, and is as enjoyable as this one was.

Unusual take on supernatural beings such as demons, gargoyles, witches and vampires. I don't usually like departures from the normal myths and rules of these kind of creatures, but this works quite well. Ella and her friends are captivating, and I'm sure I won't be able to resist the next book.

A constellation of varied characters includes:
* Truly good social do-gooders;
* Those in need of good deeds;
* A powerful relative who is Ella's polar opposite--or might just be powerfully misunderstood;
* Budding friends with interesting talents; and
* Key companions who look like a dog and a gargoyle but I think are NOT pets in any way.

All that, and somehow Ella must keep her day job with the Demon Patrol? Could be the start of a fun series.

Copy editing is MUCH better than many ebooks. That's an extra half-star that puts STONE COLD MAGIC at five stars.

I liked the story but the problem was that the author keeps repeating information she already stated. This happens numerous times. There's no need to explain a term every time you use it. I couldn't wait to finish. Doubtful that will read the next one.

Ell a is a minor earth witch who is having a bit of a crisis after dying for 18 minutes. Whatever her personal crisis she still has time to help a young girl whose brother gets involved in a weird accident with a gargoyle and a demon. The world building is spot on and the characters are likable. I'm looking forward to reading the next in the series!

I absolutely loved this book and can't wait for the next one in the series. I read this book through kindle unlimited and wasn't sure I'd like it, but I was pleasantly surprised. This was one book I couldn't put down until the end and kept me guessing all the way until the end. Great characters and I can't wait to read about them again and see where the story takes them in future books. You won't be disappointed reading this book.

I received an ARC from the author and have chosen to review it. I really enjoyed reading this book. I found it really interesting to see how Ella Grey went about her life after she had been declared dead for about 20 minutes and what she went through to find out what was going on with her and to deal with things from her past. It was really interesting to see and I can’t wait to read the next one in the series.
