It’s hard to believe “Those Who Lie” is just the debut for Diane Jeffrey. It’s the novel all writers wish they could create – the one that leaves the reader bound to the edge of their seat. Jeffrey accomplished it straight out of the gate. She’ll blow your mind as the story unfolds, then finish off with an ending you won’t see coming until you’re already there. If you don’t want to miss out on an exciting, page-turning thriller, “Those Who Lie” is a must-read for you.

A plot driven psychological thriller with twists and turns all over the place and cliffhangers at the end of every chapter, this is the kind of book you devour in one sitting. (It took me slightly longer than that, but only because I had to work extra hours those days!) We jump into Emily’s story as she wakes up in the hospital only to find out her husband had died, and it’s her fault. She doesn’t recall much from the moments before the car accident that killed him, except that they had an argument, the reasons for which she has also forgotten. The first chapter (strikethrough) sentence serves as an intriguing hook for the story that follows.

Every other chapter switches from the present to the past, following Emily’s backstory, and back to the present again. Jeffrey has done quite a good job at making these transitions with ease, and the storylines complement each other, making you want to know more about her past as well as what is going to happen next. I did figure out the ending quite early on and it didn’t take too much longer to figure out the why. I also could have used a bit more character development, but overall, these didn’t necessarily take away from my reading experience as I enjoyed watching the plot unfold in front of me.

My biggest issues with this book were the formatting and the tenses used. I’m assuming the formatting was off simply because I read a digital arc and will be fixed in the final publication. As far as tenses go, I’m actually a big fan of novels told in first person present, but the third person present here started getting on my nerves. This is just one of my idiosyncratic preferences, but I figured I’d mention it in case it’s one of yours as well! However, I do believe that regardless of my feelings, this is one of the ways Jeffrey separated the chapters that were in the present versus in the past, which did make for a seamless switch every time.

If plot driven psychological thrillers are your thing, definitely give this one a shot!

In the weeks following, contact is made that shouldn't be possible and she sees and hear things that shouldn't be there - is Emily losing her mind?
The blurb gives little away, which is great, because I didn't have a preconceived notion of what to expect. What I got were great characters that are, for the most part, interesting and well fleshed out, and a storyline that is intriguing and solid enough to keep me up late at night, unable to put the book down. The author keeps you guessing and rooting for Emily, and ultimately delivers a satisfying twist to wrap up a fantastic read. Highly recommended.

A very well written Psychological Thriller with well defined characters. While I guessed early on, I didn't know all of the details, and it didn't stop me from turning the pages quickly to get the full story. An engaging read right up until the creepy ending that left me second guessing all over again! Thank you to HarperCollinsUK and NetGalley for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This story had me guessing for a long time. Emily and her husband are in a terrible accident and she wakes up in the hospital on the day of his funeral. Someone is trying to drive Emily crazy and with her memory loss she is beginning to doubt her sanity. This is a true thriller and the cast of characters is magnificent. I loved Emily and her courage and strength. a great read.

well done psychological thriller. It's a quick read both because it's a page turner and because it's short. That doesn't mean you don't get to know, sympathize with, and question Emily, who is a very clever creation. It's hard to write a review because of spoilers but try this one. Thanks to netgalley for the ARC. Good lazy day read.

A great read! Love the way it's narrated: interesting but not so much that you get lost. Emily is a really thought provoking, out-of-the-ordinary character while remaining very believable. A lot of attention to technical detail that also adds to the credibility of the story. A real page turner with suspense to keep you riveted from start and a twist to startle you at the finish. Some nice touches of humour as an added bonus. Thoroughly recommend it.

This is an exciting psychological thriller with very well-developed characters. There were times when I knew what was coming and there were times when I was totally surprised and had no clue what was transpiring. I really enjoyed this novel and have no doubt that many others will enjoy it too! Well done!

An excellent read all along, with convincing characters, fine writing, skilful twists of the plot that never cease to surprise you and have you revise your judgment at each new revelation... This is a highly enjoyable book that very originally follows a main character who is just as much in the dark as to what exactly happened to her (and even more so to her husband) as we are. Hope you like it as much as I did!
