I like this book a lot. Easy read, characters are interesting and look forward to reading more in the series. I like Lady Emily she is a bold female for her time. Her mother is true in description and character and even makes me mad! Good travel on plane book.

This is Tasha Alexander's first book - the book that introduces the main characters and which sets the foundation for all the rest of Ms Alexander's books to follow. It is a must read if you love historical mysteries and a bit of romance thrown in too.

This first book captured my attention because the price was right. Little did I know that I would become addicted to Lady Emily mysteries. I am now reading the fourth book. Very well written and enjoyable.
Malice at the Palace (Her Royal Spyness) :: The Dark Enquiry (A Lady Julia Grey Novel - Book 5) (Lady Julia Grey series) :: A Treacherous Curse (A Veronica Speedwell Mystery) :: Silent in the Sanctuary (A Lady Julia Grey Mystery) :: Dark Road to Darjeeling (A Lady Julia Grey Mystery)

The research that Tasha Alexander put into her First Lady Emily novel makes the story an enjoyable one. Good character development, good dialog, twists and turns in the plot make it a book difficult to put down.

Enjoyed the journal excerpts between chapters. It was interesting to get to know Lord Ashton as Lady Ashton got to know him. The falling in love seems a little contrived though. She creates a little hero worship. I'm looking forward to more Lady Ashton novels.

I love, love, love this book! Tasha Alexander recreates the world of late 19th century England in a way that makes you believe she was actually there. In fact, I maybe me believe I was actually there as I moved from page to page. Lady Emily Ashton is a marvelous character, and I'm so glad this is just the first in many more Lady Ashton books to come.

Reading this debut novel was enjoyable and relaxing. I found myself longing for the shores of Santorini, wanting to wander through the halls of the British Museum, and desiring to embark on reading The Iliad myself...a task I never imagined wanting to take on. Ms. Alexander's writing brings the reader through a fascinating intrigue laced with humor, romance and intelligence. There were characters to cheer for, characters to be unsure of and characters I just couldn't wait to get to the bottom of. Alexander's research was evident, and she went to great lengths to provide accurate details of the time and the environment without overwhelming the reader. I look forward to the next installment in what is sure to be a great series of intelligent novels.

Pros:
A good sense of place
Strong female character ( given the time period)
Well formatted mystery
Cons:
Said mystery isn't adventure or explosions but if you like a slow but well-paced build it, I would recommend reading this

If you like a little historical authenticity with your mystery -- this book is for you! If you prefer a look at the interior life and development of an interesting main character -- this is also you book! Enjoy!

This book was an enjoyable reading experience with intrigue, mystery and non-graphic romance. Also no profanity. A nice change from most romance novels written now days. I will definitely proceed on to another Lady Emily Mystery.

If you enjoy historical fiction, you'll enjoy this book. Though the character development could have been deeper, the story was well developed and kept my interest. I look forward to the next in the series.
