Excellent tips for saving money while traveling around the world, somewhat slanted toward the younger traveler. Many of the tips are applicable to any age group, fortunately, but a lot of the advice about lodging and saving money on food seem more useful to the younger crowd, or at least a more agile and adventurous crowd than this early 70's-age reviewer. I'd like to see a companion volume written on the topic for senior citizens! The book is well-written, and clearly Matt has experienced all that he writes about. He swiftly dispels the myth that you need to have a trust fund in order to travel around the world, and provides concrete examples of how to save up FOR the trip, as well as how to save WHILE traveling.

A fellow travel hacker teacher myself I loved Matt's book. A longtime blog follower - I was excited to read a physical book of his.

I definitely recommend this for beginning travel hackers, especially for his in depth information about Europe.

I wish there was a little more info on traveling safely as a woman though, but otherwise - excellent book that I recommend in my Travel Hacking Class!

Traveling is money well spent and this book helps you travel longer, while spending less.

This is a great book for any person who wants to extend their travels beyond the normal two weeks splurge. Spending a lot of money does not guarantee a good vacation and this book explores the mindset it takes to have the best time, while staying within a reasonable budget. Long term travel is possible for anyone who can save some money and get creative in making the time to see the world.

Great tips for savings in individual countries for food, activities, and getting around. You can either travel for a year collecting this information yourself, or save yourself time and money and grab this book to read before your next travel.

The conversation usually starts like this:

How can you afford to travel so much.

I get this question a lot in the United States (not so much elsewhere). Americans (the US ones) are plugged into the matrix that is the American Dream of working to buy things and going into debt. They still see travel as the exception to life -- a vacation from life. As far as extended travel goes, well, that is for the idle rich or carefree youth.

When I tell them that my life on the road is usually cheaper than the world they live in, they remain disbelieving. This book can explain it in detail. It can prepare you to unplug from that matrix.

I would recommend reading the first part of the book to get familiar with the opportunities, and then read the specific chapters for where you want to go.

The author is young but do not mistake the advice as just for the carefree youth. There are many examples of people traveling the world right now, of all ages. For the retired set, read Lynne Martin's book, "Home Free Anywhere" -- she and her husband live on the road, after having retired. But again, anybody can do it. You can make money anywhere -- the key is to free yourself from your location. I discovered, for example, that Europe was the best place to be to sell to a client of mine who was located in the Midwest US. The time change allowed me to call him first thing in the morning, before my competition did.

A few other recommendations: "Vagabonding" by Rolf Potts and "Map for Saturday," a movie about quitting your job and traveling the world for a year or so. It focuses on the hostel community, which may not be your thing, but it shows you what the world looks like outside the matrix Americans live in.

See ya out there somewhere.

I live in Brazil , but became interested in the book and saw that despite being more tips for those who live in North America , Europe and Australia , I find it good to learn the ideas and try to apply here where I live. Vale knowledge.

This book is full of clear, forward knowledge based information on traveling the world. I already follow Matt on Facebook, Twitter and his website but his book condenses all of his expertise in one well written piece. I am using his book to plan my own long term trip but I have also given a copy as a gift to a friend planning a two week trip- whether your travel plans are long and indefinite or short and fixed this book will help you save money.

This book has lots of useful information even if you don't travel around the world but only get out of the country twice a year. Who wouldn't love to know how to save as much as possible on various fees and charges overseas?! Plus, it's a very easy read, like talking to a friendly person you met traveling somewhere. All in all, a great book to have in "travel" section of your library.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and found it very useful for my future travels. Matt provides a lot of great suggestions and tips for saving money, and I particularly found the resources he provided were the most helpful. I will certainly keep it handy so I can refer to the location specific tips when I finally get to visit all the countries talked about in the book!

Definitely a good read for anybody travelling on a budget. The writing style is clear and easy to read and he provides good advice that is applicable most anywhere in the first half of the book, then he focuses on specific regions of the world in the second half. All very useful advice and stuff you would (eventually) figure out on your own through trial-and-error.

Great advice on how to travel cheaply. The chapter on credit cards for travel was especially useful and I regret not reading this a year-and-a-half ago when I shipped a kid off to Siberia for study abroad and then met her in Moscow for travel in Russia and Western Europe--we could have saved a fortune if we'd opened an airline credit card for booking all of that travel.

Solid advice, well organized. I've passed it along to my globetrotting daughter.
