This book was published by Disney to preceed the May 30th release of Disney's film of the same title. Maleficent is the evil fairy who enchants the princess Aurora, making her into Sleeping Beauty. The story of how and why she comes to that decision is detailed. Although readers of Sleeping Beauty may think of Maleficent as a human, this book brings back the notion that she is, in fact, a fairy. A quick, easy read for the intended audience who will enjoy a different look at a story they may remember from childhood. This book follows Disney's book, Fairest of All: A Tale of the Wicked Queen (adapted by Serena Valentino, c2009), the story of the evil ruler from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The mostly-black cover and 5 1/2 x 7-inch size will make the book unique in look; the arresting cover illustration means the book won't stay long on the shelf. This light read will be a hit with preteen girls.

I was pretty disappointed in reading Elizabeth Rudnick's Maleficent as it had the potential to be a truly epic retelling of the classic Sleeping Beauty tale. Unfortunately this book was geared for much younger CHILDREN, and I would consider it a children's book that is not in any way YA. Though the story had an interesting plot it lacked the necessary detailing for emotionally investing the reader in Maleficent's story. Character development was almost non-existent, which made it difficult to understand the motivations behind each characters actions. The storyline was also underdeveloped and read more like a list of plot points rather than a smoothly transitioning novel. Overall this book would probably serve as a decent outline for someone more willing to expand and develop the story as it was meant to be told.

Great book! Definitely recommend it. It was suspenseful but not boring, you want to see what happens next. I'm a fast reader and this book took me one sitting. Could have been longer but it was great.

Please note this review is simply about the look of the book. I just received it, have not read it, but did see the movie (which was awesome) so had to have the story in print for my library.
I am so blown away with the presentation of this piece, beautiful paper stock on the dust jacket with a totally cool spot varnish, page edges are done in "theme-keeping" black :-) and as highlighted in my title, printed in the USA. I love it when companies keep their work here. To sum up, I think I'll order a second to read and keep one copy wrapped and pristine. Thank you Disney Press!

Maleficent is the retelling of the fairytale, "Sleeping Beauty." The author focuses the attention on the evil queen Maleficent. Was she truly evil or just a women scorned? As the story progresses you see Maleficent going through a series of emotional change for the better. In the beginning she befriends a human name Stefan. They shared a true loves kiss. Then Stefan broke her heart in the act of betrayal of their friendship. He uses Maleficent by taking her wings to advance he position within the castle. Maleficent becomes immense with rage and hurt. Her revenge on him is to curse his first born daughter, Aurora. Through the years without even knowing it Maleficent grows fond of the girl. In the end it was Maleficent who had saved the very girl that she had cursed, with True Loves Kiss. The kiss of a love that was so unconditional the love that was between a Mother and a Daughter. Love conquers all in the end. Bitterness can eat up inside and make anyone cold, but when a ray of light comes your way snatch it up for love will warm and melt away the hurt.
