This book has so many settings that really make it a very interesting book. I would recommend everyone to read this book to get a feeling of what many different settings feel like. This fairytale is definitely one you don't want to miss.

Now one of my favorite books. If you enjoy creepy retellings of fairytales, you'll love this. That's not all it is though. This dark story kept me entertained throughout and I often revisit it. I couldn't recommend any tale more.

I absolutely loved this novel. Connolly's voice is unique, his prose crisp, and his imagery vivid. Moreover, he tells exactly the kind of tale we need: one that confronts the imperfection of our natures without becoming mired in the kind of cynicism so pervasive in today's "fine" literature. Well worth the read.

This book captivates you at the beginning in the WWII setting and then takes you into a mystical world where the mail character comes across real-life issues in a fairy-tale setting. It's wonderful and deep and challenges you at every turn. I absolutely loved it, and then ending will bring you reassurance.

Took me several starts over the years, then finally dived in and finish the book. I don't like David and never did, though he was transformed, but we were civil just for story's sake. There are some parts that I really like about the book like tackling jealousy, OCD, how you magnify fear and facing it, owning up your mistakes or garbage and dealing with it and second chances. There was a part of the book I was stunned because the way Rose thought David bury himself in books and alienating himself from his family, like me. There are books that make you feel wistful but this made me sad.

This book was amazing! It was definitely a darker twist on the fairytale genre, but it was phenomenal nonetheless! I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys fairytales but is looking for a refreshing new spin.

My book club read this book together. Everyone was surprisingly delighted with it. The references to the Grimm fairytales were humorous and the book kept my interest through to the end. I would recommend this book to anyone who liked fairytales as a child.

Great service and book came pretty much as discribed. However, they did not mention it had a very strong old book smell. I would still buy from this seller in the future but it would have been nice for them to include that in the discription.

Oh wow! This book is sooo original and refreshing and I just couldn't wait to get back to it. Disturbing sometimes but I absolutely loved it. This was my first book by the author and I can't wait to discover more of his work.

I borrowed this book on audio from the library and it was the first book I heard driving without getting distracted. Now I got it . It's a fantasy book and it uses the classic fairy tales like so many other books, but it has something original - funny or disturbing.( "His eyes were fixed on the boy. David saw them narrow, as if the bowman could not quite understand what was being said or what was happening to him as he knelt in the snow, his blood pooling around him. Then, slowly, they grew wide and calm as death gave him an explanation"). Not for very young readers.

I absolutely loved this book. It is very different from books I usually read. Especially loved the authors explaination of the different segments of this novel and why the tales were included. Would recommend this book to anyone who wants to experience a very different type of story. Not only did he use the fairy tales charactars to captivate you he also incorporated a Stephen King charactar to boot. The whole book makes you think as you read along.
Loved it ...Loved it....Loved it!
Could have slapped the young boy at first. But you get to love him and feel his pain. Excellent read !!!!!!!!!!!

A dark fairy tale which winds thru the main character's life. Without spoiling any surprises, I will just say this is an excellent book. Sad, sweet, exciting, scary, and beautiful. A wonderful story about a boy who loosing someone and then tries trying to find his new place in this world without them.
