Liked the story format and the wisdom nuggets that are dropped through out the book. For his first book, Charlamagne tha God did a great job. The reader gets to know the author better and sees how this author has evolved successfully. In addition, to showcasing that there is not just one blue print to the road to success, but multiple routes to success. The title has nothing to do with race, but everything to do with success, and the mindset required to succeed in life. So if you are on the fence about getting this book and of a different race, i recommend you get it-and be prepared to learn and be inspired-great read.

Before reading this book, I was not very familiar with Charlamagne The God. Granted, I judged the name. However, I will read just about anything. This book had great reviews, and since he's a radio jockey, I bought the audio book assuming (very correctly) that he'd be the best person to tell his story. I was blown away by how much I enjoyed this book. He's funny, engaging, crude, and honest - all good things in my opinion. I'm debating as to whether or not my teenage son is ready for some of the more adult commentary, but he will read it soon.
Charlamagne paints a vivid picture of South Carolina, his family life, his various missteps and how he's managed to maintain confidence in himself through his faith in God. It is an incredible reminder for those who feel they have lost their way or may be at a crossroads. You do not need to love hip hop or be comfortable with religion to read this. Something in this book will speak to you, and if you're smart, you'll reflect on something in your life that will make you better in life - personal or professional. He suggests we should all read books by people who are different from ourselves to learn more about the world; if this is not someone who is in your world, give it a shot. You will not be disappointed. If you know him from his radio work, you may come to like him more. I've recently heard some of his radio stuff and it makes a certain impression. This book is brilliant, well-written, honest, and very funny. You won't be disappointed. I've listened to the audio book twice and purchased the hardcover. :)

It was just average. It was nice to hear about his childhood. It's another motivational book regarding how he achieved success, once you've read many books like these, the advice becomes redundant. I also felt like he jumped around in the book, it could have flowed a little better. However, I respect his hustle and tenacity. Worth a buy if you are interested in his life and if you followed his progress (The Breakfast Club) prior to reading the book.

I must admit that I wasn't a true fan of Charlemagne, because I thought he talked too much. However, I saw the interview with Birdman, he was so authentic and knew who he was. He simply said I am the radio guy. At that moment I started to listen because he truly showed his authentic self. I have been a fan every since. So when he dropped his book I just had to read it. Charlemagne has inspired so much and helped reignite that fire within me. We all have a pass but as he says it's not where you begin it's where you end!!! I would like to thank Charlemagne for a well written authentic book. You can truly tell that he wrote this book from his heart, it is real, raw, and great!!

I read this book in 2 days! To read where Charlamagne came from and all he went thru to become a Radio Star was very enlightening! I've recommended this book to several people that are thinking about doing other things with their lives and are afraid...create your own opportunity and don't stop! Great job Charlamagne!!

My husband put this on my kindle for him to read but I ended up picking it up and even though I had no idea who Charlamagne was or what the book was supposed to be about I found myself hooked. I read the whole thing very quickly. I don't care much for autobiography's but he kept it entertaining and it seemed truthful.

As a fan, this book served as insight to the views that harness Charlamagnes appraoch to his craft. This level of honesty he posses should be upheld by more people in todays society. His upbringing is parallel to many individuals from urban and rural backgrounds. However, his beliefs that have propelled his acfions to become the person who he is today are that of which many of should subscribe too. This book is written in an honest and yet harshly consumable way in which the novice reader can consume and yet still reap the reward of so many life changing practical jewels to apply on their journey. As an African American I say this a must read for urban youth but also for anyone of that matter seeking a practical approaches to day to day life supported by the raw experiences of the author who overcame many adversities to be able to share his testimony and have built a platform that has been so influential in bringing information from various aspects to the forefront. Awesome book!

At first, I chose to overlook the extreme cussing and sexual references becuase the principles laid out and lessons learned in the book were top notch. I found out about the book through Ryan Holiday’s monthly email supscription and he has not disappointed me since, until now. Don’t get me wrong, I like that Charalamagne kept it real and raw, the honesty was there. Some of the stories in this book took real courage to write about and discuess, I can admire that. Some of the jokes were pretty funny too. But, the fact that he called white people “white devils” and that 80% of them are that way is why I’m giving this book a low rating, that and I found the excessive detail about his sex life just unnecessary and added nothing of value. Some people find this book inspiring and uplifting, which they are intitled to their opinion. As for me, I call it a pass.

This book was incredibly engrossing. Learning about Charlamagne' s journey was a great experience. I can't wait to see what other books he has in store. I was scared when I read a part in the beginning about a toy of his...I was laughing out loud when I read about his the enlargement pills...and I was crying when I read about his acknowledgement of how hurt his mom was by his father as well as how hurt his wife was by him before he proposed. It's a great story about his personal and professional journey. Thank u for sharing, Charlamagne.

I was shocked when this book was nominated for my book club selection. I am not a hip hop fan due to the misogyny and self denigration that pervades much of the music. I had never heard of Charlamagne. I am now going to buy copies for my nephews because the author is speaking truth. All I really had to due was get past the use of profanity and relax into the story he was telling! Powerful!!

It also details everything he had to go through in regards to his career path to achieve the level of success that he has present day. It took this man 16+ years to have a career that he enjoys! I don't think I've ever finished reading a book as fast as this one. During my free time I could not put it down. The advice in this book was just so practical and applicable and didn't come across as being preachy. Charlamagne hit it right out of the park with this one. Always been a fan but this has put you on another level via giving back what lessons you've been taught over the years.

It started off as a simple autobiographical look at a celebrities life, to a book of real sound advice supported by pretty legit experience from the author. Definitely was impressed. There are some parts that are in the book that help compound a point or lesson being made, but aren't very necessary.
As a person who has listened to Cthagod on each of his platforms (radio, podcast, and TV), I noticed many stories that he has told several times. That being said, knowing the depth of some of the stories and the revelation of others, surprised me. Definitely helped give me a better perspective to the thought process and decision making of Charlamagne.
The book is worth the read

Purchase this book after hearing Charlemagne's interview on Y100. Was not sure what to expect, but after a plane ride with 2 stops and a lay-over, I am almost done with the entire book! This books speaks to great principles and as an up and coming author along with the fact that I was not raised in the greatest of neighborhoods, I completely agree with using adversities to uplift you and learning from your life experiences.

This book touched on quite a few life points that I enjoyed, the fact that he spoke on how you and your circle should evolve was great. Also, I listen to CtheGod on the breakfast club but it was quite enjoyable to hear his journey in his unfiltered words. This book was entertaining, informative and inspirational

This is a must read book. At first I did not know what to expect because Charlamagne can come off as a "know it all". This book gave me a better understanding as to who he is as a person. It also gave me ammunition to "live my own truth". I was thoroughly impressed with this book. the only thing I did not care for was that it seemed that he spent so much time telling us about his rise to successful(which I enjoyed) that his advice section seemed really rushed at the end. Perhaps he can write another book giving us more gems to follow. He is a very educated man and I loved the different books that he recommended for reading.

its vulgar, real, abrasive and honest; all of the reasons why i enjoyed listening to C Tha God is all the reasons why i love this book. The book is an extension of the man, so if you do not like him you may or may not love this book, but if you have enjoyed his content over the years from guy code to girl code, to breakfast club to brilliant idiots, this is the book for you. i personally love it and recommend you pick it up even if just see what all the fuss is about. its not a new york times best seller for no reason.

This book is truly one of the best books I've read in a long time. I'm actually looking forward to reading it again....It is real, raw, gritty, and uplifting at the same damn time!! I can't wait to share some of Charlamagne's philosophies with my children, namely my son. If he were older, I'd ask him to read it. I have recommended this book to everyone I've come across and will continue to. Thank you Charlamagne for sharing your advice and talents with the world.

This book is hilarious, introspective, thought-provoking and motivational. Charlamagne stripped down and revealing himself to the world...along with introducing the world to life in South Carolina. As a South Carolina native it's extremely impressive to see how vivid a picture he paints and how much love he has for where he comes from. I recommend this book to anyone that's trying to continue elevating and see growth.

The title is certainly provocative and pulled me in. I hoped it would provide more insight into the concept of privilege in black culture. Instead, this is more of a biography with some life advice. It was an easy quick read, esp. for the author’s fans, but I hoped it would have been deeper.

I ordered this book on a whim & after receiving it I couldn't put it down! After listening to Charlemagne on the radio over the years I thought he was just another loud mouth radio personality but after reading his book he has completely changed my mind. He's still a loud mouth but there is a lot of substance to the guy that I didn't know was there. His book is a story of really coming into his own through hard times & failures all backed by faith. I highly recommend this book!

This book was so enlightening. As a black man from Summerton SC I didn't think there was a possibility to be successful. I never took the step to be great, instead I allowed the local oppression to keep me idled. This book has opened my eyes and thoughts to a greater sense of opportunity and life. I would recommend this book to all men struggling to find their why and their way. Awesome read!!! Thank you Charlemagne for allowing me to step outside of myself and pursue LIFE.

This book was really good, interesting, captivating and of course at times problematic!! Black Privilege wouldn't have been believable if Charlamagne wasn't at least a little bit problematic! I look up to Uncle Charla as a mentor, someone who reached success taking the road less traveled. This is a great read! I finished reading this book in 2 days! Charlamagne speaks on a lot of topics I can relate to weather I've discussed these topics with family/friends or actually experienced myself! For example, Speaking your truth, embracing your physical flaws, the "however", working towards your dreams, not other's dreams, to stay learning and taking constructive criticism ! I would recommend this book any person that ids trying to evolve and better themselves!

As a fan of of the Breakfast Club and Charlamagne, I knew that his world views are at times extreme and without filters. I appreciate this brother for sharing his story. I appreciate this brother for remaining his brilliant idiot self! LOL I truly appreciate the information that he shared with the world. He didn't have to tell the world his faults, not many people can. He owned his bad and good moments and showed how he came out on the other side. So many of us like to ignore those bad moments. The realness of this book spoke to me and encouraged me to remain humble. Charlamagne I APPRECIATE YOU! I APPRECIATE YOUR TRUTH! I APPRECIATE YOUR STORY! I APPRECIATE THIS BOOK!

This book is so lit.
Charlamagne's writing and storytelling was impeccable. It created a "page-turner" enviroment. When it comes to manifesting, he is dead on and perhaps some of that has to do with "Tha God" in the title of his name. Everytime someone speaks his name, they are unknowingly confirming his greatness.
I highly recommend this book.

Reading someone else journey to success is alway motivational, hearing the good and bad and all the scarifies they made to be who they really wanted to be in life. This book really tell us the readers that we should alway believe in ourselves and our dreams and to know what is our dream and not the chase someone else life style.

The provocative title is obviously designed to maximize exposure. The first question that comes to mind, is what does Black privilege look like? The subtitle, Opportunity Comes To Those Who Create It,is really the foundation of the book. Charlamagne has become a popular radio host through his syndicated The Breakfast Club. His niche has been challenging those in hip-hop, asking the questions that others shy away from. So his book traces his rise from a small town in South Carolina to his current place in media. The book is part memoir, part self help, and part inspiration. The book is divided not by chapters, but by eight principles.
Early in the work, the feel of just belief in yourself and God and you too will be a success felt dominant and a bit fantastical. If that were the only criteria, everyone would be a success. As the book progresses it begins to pick up steam with humor, solid advice that young folks may find helpful and inspirational. The one principle that guides the book is the now popular, "live your truth." Charlamagne makes it sound more like embrace the things about you that are true, to take power away from those who would use your flaws against you. He uses the example of him looking like a teenage mutant ninja turtle. He learned to accept that about himself, or what he called his bookie nose, i.e. big nose. These are more examples of accepting your appearance, rather than living a certain truth. The thing I think is missing is the discussion about having the space wherein one can live their truth. That is not explored. If your truth interferes with what society deems unacceptable and threatening, then what? I think Charlamagne may have become aware of this because in the final principle he states, "Don’t get it twisted: I’m not a having an “All Lives Matter” moment here. Not for a second am I suggesting that racism isn’t real. It’s as real as the air we breathe. And the evidence is everywhere."
He writes in a way that I think will be relatable to his fans, youngsters and his own age group with at times pretty sold advice, like principle five. Put The Weed In The Bag! The reference of putting the weed in the bag comes from the movie Belly, when a character was talking to some young want to be hustlers, who hadn't sold anything but were talking about getting money, his advice to them was "put the weed in the bag." Learn how to do that first and move on from there. That principle basically deals with embracing the process. People often want to start at the top or always look for the shortcut, most times there aren't any. Understanding the things you may have to do in order to achieve your end goal is a valuable lesson to hear. He worked as a co-host on the very popular Wendy Williams show for a year and a half without pay. So that provides a very powerful example of dispensing advice by way of real experience.
"If I’ve had any advantage in this life, it’s that I was encouraged to read."I like the importance he placed on books and the value of acquiring knowledge, constantly being in an inquisitive state. "Books are what provided me with a sense of escape when the tension between my parents made our home feel suffocating. Books helped give me the confidence to dream bigger than I was supposed to as a poor black boy growing up in the rural South. Books are where I got the name Charlamagne (even if I did misspell it). My life is a living testament to the transformative power of books."
Perhaps his book will become one that will be talked about as one to be read and shared. I received this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

In-your-face, opinionated, inspiring and laughable are just some of the words that best describes Black Privilege: Opportunity Comes to Those Who Create It by Charlemagne Tha God.
Let me start by saying, either you like him, or you don't. There's usually no middle opinion when it comes to this radio personality. Just his name alone screams arrogance. I mean come on, who names himself "Tha God"? Charlamagne does! That's who! (If you want to know how he came up with that name you've got to read the book). And in his New York Times best selling memoir, he shares how he became one of the most successfully, outspoken shock jocks on the radio today.
Raised in Moncks Corner, South Carolina Lenard McKelvey aka Charlamagne Tha God was a pretty low key child. Raised in a double-wide trailer with his five silbings, in his early years this self proclaimed "nerd" was an avid reader and heavily influenced by books. However, in middle school that influence would change as a new force entered his life changing his perspective of the world forever. That force was hip-hop. After hearing the song Paid In Full by Eric B and Rakim that teenage boy slowly began his transformation from Lenard the nerd, to brutally honest Charlamagne.
The book opens with Charlamagne sharing the story of how he first started living his truth. In this unquestionably hilarious account, he details how he almost got strangled to death as a result of talking trash about someone behind their back. I'm telling you...this story was so funny, I had to share it with others. And as I did, just thinking about what he had written, made me laugh so hard I cried ?. Sharing that story first was perfect for setting the tone of the book.
Black Privilege is the perfect combination of humor and knowledge. It combines all the elements required for a great memoir. The author digs up his own dirt and uncovers his own mistakes and disappointments in a way that lets us know it's ok to be beautifully flawed creatures. This book contain's no empty boasting, or arrogant pretension like we often read in other celebrity memoirs.
Black Privilege is both motivating and inspiring in a very relatable way. This is the story of a man who was kicked out of multiple high schools, went to jail multiple times, has no college or trade school education, and came from a trailer park in South Carolina, who went on to move to New York, work with Wendy Williams, and eventually become host of one of the top rated radio talk shows in America. If you are unable to find inspiration in this story...Houston there's a problem.
I highly recommend this book. It is simply a really good read. It sat on my bookshelf for six months before I cracked it open. And I can honestly say I was not disappointed. After reading Charlamagne's many laugh-out-loud narratives, I walked away from this book with a much better understanding of the mind that has formulated some of media's most controversial opinions in the world of hip hop.

Charlamagne is hilarious, insightful and quite petty (such a compliment). This wasn't the typical "you can achieve anything you put your mind to" motivational book; it was relatable. Being that I'm from Goose Creek, South Carolina, I identified deeply with this book. I love him, will always be a fan and 100% recommend this book!

I can’t help but notice that not a single negative comment was a verified purchaser on any website. I also noticed the obvious lack of understanding in the title and there seems to be a focus on it. People keep asking where the Black Privilege is and disagreeing with him... that’s NOT the point. It’s also a dead giveaway that your life lacks “color.” Black people commonly say white people have “white privelidge” and it’s been something they’ve said for many years. White people seem to have no idea what that means and black people think that it’s becsusd of shire privilege that white people don’t understand. I’m over here in the ghetto myself, I’ve lost everything I owned due to disability. I have no water to my house and haven’t in a week. I’m not sure where the privilege is myself , but I don’t have it. I do have common sense though thankfully. He’s not saying that black people have privilege. He’s sarcastically refrencing the saying that white ppl have privilege and pointing out that anybody who stop making excuses and starts making an effort will have “privilege.”

OK. I will admit it, I had never heard of Charlamagne Tha God until my sister started raving about him on The Breakfast Club, which is a nationally-syndicated radio morning show on New York's Power 105.1. And because one of the beautiful things about the internet is that it brings us all a little closer, I was able to check out the show using iHeart's radio app on my smart phone last year. After tuning in for a few months and in keeping with my quest to listen to more audiobooks, I snagged Black Privilege: Opportunity Comes to Those Who Create It. This non-fiction book was authored and read by Charlamagne.
I would definitely put this memoir in the motivational and inspirational category. Charlamagne is more than a radio personality. He is an intelligent, young man who has worked hard to carve out his space in the multimedia world. I love how he proves you can be cool and smart, humble and confident, yet perfectly flawed. In his book, he shares some personal (and very truthful sounding) stories. I found some of his analogies to be a bit crass, but I think they probably resonate with his core target audience. I find Charlamagne to be a multi-faceted and well-versed person, so I think everyone can take a little something away from his story. What touched me the most was his spiritual beliefs and love of family.
I think most celebrity memoirs have similar themes of survival and success. It's a part of the template to provide some inspiration to the masses based on their individual success. That is not a judgement or shortcoming, but rather an integral part of the genre. I think Charlamagne has captured this well with his debut. I will say this: Unlike some celebrities (read: Steve Harvey), I feel like Charlamagne really did write this book. It was definitely in his voice.
Recommendation: I would recommend this read to any young person looking for some rock solid, realistic motivation in his or her life. Having read Black Privilege, I feel like I know more about Charlamagne's life, and I have a deeper appreciation of his craft.
Until next time ... Read on!

I must admit I had not been Charlamagne’s biggest fan prior to picking up this book, I had listened to a few of The Breakfast Clubs interviews and had been very aware of how blunt and frank he could be with his words. I was one of the many people on the fence about whether or not I can actually say I liked him, I can say after reading this book I have a better understanding for his approach and much more respect for his delivery. Black Privilege gives you information on the background from which he hailed, insight on the advancement of his career to a nationally syndicated radio show and the highs and lows of his personal life. Charlamagne’s willingness to give readers an open and honest view into world is a rare commodity amongst those in the music industry. Whether you are looking to enter into the music industry or just interested in what he could possible have to teach anyone you will undoubtedly be pleased with your decision to give Black Privilege a chance. Honesty, the importance of putting in the work and the willingness to learn are the central themes throughout this book.
As you would suspect, many people assume his success happened overnight, after all for many of us outside of the South Carolina, Philly and NYC area, we hadn’t known much about him before he achieved a reasonable amount of success. His success may have looked easy but there were plenty of hurdles and obstacles that stood in the way of him reaching the platform he has today. Charlamagne came from a small town called Moncks Corner about a half hour drive from Charleston, South Carolina. He had barely made it out of middle school, had been put out of high school and sent to jail twice by the time he was 18. He changed not only his outlook on life but his lifestyle, taking control over his health and his time. He has mastered the art of maximizing the use of his time to achieve his goals.
Charlagmagne’s mother had encouraged him at a very young age to read, not just to read but read a variety of genres, this very basic lesson would later serve to teach him self love, and about the world beyond what he could see in his small town. One of the first lessons you will learn from this book is that you cannot let the origin of your journey determine the destination, you can come from anywhere and become absolutely anything. Much of his success he repeatedly accredits to God, although he doesn’t associate himself with any one religioin but considers himself more of a spiritual individual.
Passion, poison and procrastination are the three options you have to choose the direction in which you want your life to follow; it is a personal choice to choose two of the latter and endure pain and ultimately prolong you in actually reaching your potential. Another lesson you will learn is that you need to make sure it’s your dream your following, following another’s dream won’t help you reach your full potential or provide the gratification you’re searching for. Don’t do something because its cool or you see everybody else doing it, let it be something you are passionate about. Listen to those trying to help you hone in on what your skill is, it may not always be what you think it is and their constructive criticism may not be what you like to hear. Make sure this persons advice is coming from a good place and not just killing your dream. It’s safe to say that most people fear the consequences of speaking candidly to everyone you encounter so its no surprise that many of his superiors disagreed with his delivery and had asked him to reign in his brutally honest opinions. Charlamagne had refused to change anything about what made him who he was, choosing individuality over conforming to society’s expectations.
Despite the current state of their relationship Charlamagne doesn’t deny the vast amount of experience he gained while working with Wendy Williams. His work with Wendy had not been paid experience, he had been asked to accept the position knowingly without any compensation. While most people today wouldn’t even give the opportunity a second thought especially having established some paid experience prior to, Charlamagne understood the value of experience. He choose to focus on mastering his skills, which he frequently refers to as “putting the weed in the bag”, a principle taken from the movie Belly. The point of this lesson is that you have to learn the process in order to progress, you can’t just skip the steps to success, each step is essential no matter how trivial it may seem. One of the most overlooked positions is that of the intern, he goes to great lengths to explain the benefits outside of financial benefits that you gain as an intern. In order to reach the different levels of success on your career path you have to be willing to learn, stressing the importance of admitting when you are ignorant about a certain subject in exchange for knowledge.
As he reflects back on the video that had surfaced of him being sucker punched on his way to work he doesn’t take the time to bash the individuals for the cowardly act but he uses this situation as a learning lesson. Many saw the video of him running from the situation as him acting cowardly when in fact he explains he had done what was best for himself, the future of his career and his family. His honesty and decision to be forthcoming with this altercation allowed him to get ahead of a situation which could have damaged his career. Once again his openness and honesty paid off. Living your truth will give you an advantage in most situations, being honest with others even if they do not openly welcome your honest opinion will earn you at the very least their respect if they’re honesty with themselves.
As much as putting in the work is reinforced so is the importance of making connections to those who can help you reach your goals along the way. Most steps involving the progression of his career came thanks to those relationships he built along the way. Much of the credit for this life lesson he accredits to his grandmother who taught him the value of manners and greeting others with respect and a pleasant attitude.
Nearing the end of the book he chooses to explain the reasoning behind the naming of the book. Most African Americans wouldn’t hesitate to argue the inexistence of “black privilege”, and it does seem like a very far fetched concept considering the current state of our country. Black privilege is however real, we all have privileges that someone else is less fortunate to have; it is our job to recognize these privileges and capitalize on them. Acceptance of your black privileges will help you to ignore those who choose to make you feel you are inferior. Using your race, economic status or location as an excuse for not achieving your goals is unacceptable and as he states in his subtitle “opportunity comes to those who create it.” Charlamagne leaves his readers who believe in their black privilege with a final message that with faith and hard work anything can be accomplished and if we put in the work no one can stop us from claiming what God has held in store for us.
I am so glad I choose to pick up this book and give it a chance, my opinion of him has changed for the better and I can respect his hustle and who he has become today. You can catch him on The Breakfast Club, and watch him on Guy Code. His future seems to be very promising at this point and I look forward to watching him take on new opportunities. For a hardback copy you’ll be looking to pay around$25.99 but to be quite honest you can find it on sale in most bookstores, I would reccomend this read to an adult audience to some of the graphic language used

I not a hip hopper, but Charlamagne has me listening and I've listened twice already via Audible. There are so many points, but he speaks out to Black men/boys. Don't let what you see and hear make you who you are not!!! Follow your truth, live no matter how bad or sick, God knows and he is there for you. Thank you for that Charlamagne, you just uplifted a middle aged woman who sees your old truth played out so much that it was good to hear from someone who has lived, made a decision and then stuck to the decision. Thank your for promoting marriage and not being ashamed to do it. So many men will shack forever, not realizing the damage you are causing. We single women want to feel like we are 'worth it' - Thank you, cause I know we are but what about the men. You're standing up and I don't care how you found God, you said it, "we were lost, not God". So much realism, that I had to listen a second time and I took notes, I am now downloading the "48 Laws of Power", the Ultimate Kiss, look I love books, but I really love books that get me somewhere. Thank you young man, and for those grinding it out everyday and doing your best, God Bless, I'm just so thankful I gave this book a chance. I feel more educated now and i'm an "old head". God Bless

I have been wanting to read this book for a while, but I just haven't made the time to sit and read a book like I'd like to. It ended up being my first Audible purchase, and I am so glad. This book was great. It explains how although there may be certain privileges that you may not have available to you, if you work hard and have faith YOU CAN SUCCEED at whatever it is you set out to do. Not only is it motivational, it's funny as hell and very insightful. I love Charla, and this made me feel so much closer to knowing who he is as a person - and now I am even more intrigued by him. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a good read/listen/etc. Many great points, I had to use the bookmark feature several times to share with others and just go over again myself. It has definitely motivated me to get my ass in gear, and keep working for what I know I deserve in life!!! Hearing it read by Charlamagne is a super plus, it went by so fast and easy I couldn't stop listening. I will definitely be purchasing the hard copy just to have on hand. I look forward to many more books to come!! Great job!

Charlamagne Tha God is not everyone's cup of tea. He's opinionated, says what a lot of us may be afraid to, and is a bit problematic at times.
Regardless of your opinion of him, you must admire his come up. He has worked his way up to being a household name in radio. Charlamagne shows us that with a sickening work ethic, will, and the courage to believe in yourself, opportunity really comes to those who create it.
Nothing is handed to us, everything must be earned. I read quite a bit of self-help and inspirational books and this one stands out above the pack. It's practical, entertaining, and filled with gems. You don't have to be in the music business or know much about the hip-hop culture to retain the lessons that Charlamagne has laid out in the book.
My favorite lesson from the book? "It's not the size of the pond, it's the hustle in the fish." Your past is a part of your story, but it doesn't have to define.
I recommend reading this book.

While listening to this book, I listened to all the advice, the lessons and the stories. I thought of all the young black men in my life that can both relate and learn from Charlamagne Tha God's coming of age lessons. I would describe the book as vivid, animated, touching and most important...memorable. I would like to purchase a few copies and gift them to people. The audio version is what I purchased. It is awesome and amazingly narrated. My attention was captured from the first sentence, I was so0 intrigued with Moncks Corner, South Carolina; I had to look it up, just to take a peak. The entire book was interesting. My favorite part was the acknowledgements. My take away from the acknowledgements was that you absolutely can not make it through this life with out others. You simply can't. The best way to get to where you are going in this life is to light the path for others. Karma/Energy is real and what you pour into someone will fill your own cup. Lastly, reading is fundamental. I was really excited to know Charlamagne read Judy Blume.
I highly recommend!!!!!

I recommend this to upper-high school students/dropouts, college (college-aged) students...basically anyone over the age of 17. Charlamagne his the nail on the head with his 8 steps to reaching your dreams, and I loved every second of this book! I listened to the audiobook in less than 24 hours!! I laughed, I nodded my head in agreement, and just all around FELT this book! I loved how he went about giving advice, telling his story, and just being REAL! I wish I could house this book in my high school library, but because it's VERY adult...I am positive someone would challenge it; however, that doesn't mean I won't recommend it! ;)

I thought Charlamagne's book was incredible. My favorite chapter was put the money in the bag. I've been really inspired by that chapter. I've been moving very differently since reading the book. I began teaching my daughter to work on her creativity and talents using the "put it in the bag" mantra. Everything that she does is preparing her for something greater. Since reading the book I've had a son. I've been wanting to be a better example to my son so I began writing children's books for him. My goal isn't money but I want to help him "put money in the bag". I wrote a book teaching him to count 1-10 in English, Spanish, Portuguese, French and Chinese. It's on the store now. Don't think writing a book would have been something I saw myself ever doing before "put it in the bag". I hope to write more books but I totally want to thank Charlamagne for the insight he's given me.It's going to help me prepare my kids for the world they're growing into and in helping to mold their gifts...I can help my children "put money in the bag". Thank You Charlamagne. For real. Thank you.

This was a really good book. I have to admit that I was going into it pretty pessimistically. I have a limited knowledge of C Tha God, and what I know of him, I get the idea that he is brash, rude, opinionated, and egotistical - just for starters. But, after listening to this audiobook, I have to admit that I am quite impressed. Admittedly, in some ways, my original opinion of him could still be applicable, but to hear about how and why he is the was he is was eye-opening, and I can't help but appreciate his candor and transparency.
The book brought back memories of my childhood - movies I watched as a teen, my favorite hip-hop artists growing up, slang I used to use when I ran the streets - there were many moments of nostalgia. But, the best parts of the book,in my opinion are the jewels he dropped when it came to growing up, being an adult, manhood, maturity, etc. I found myself taking more notes than I originally thought I would. Also, it was nice to hear how he got to where he is today. I was really unaware of how many folks he associated with as he came up, how many folks he rubbed the wrong way, and how he has genuinely (and proudly) has his reputation.
Now, there are some parts of the book that are fairly graphic in nature and tone - sexually graphic/explicit. So, ifthatsnot your cup of tea - be warned. But, there is nothing too excessive in that area. True, C tha God probably could have used different language in certain areas of the book - but, it's his book, so he doesn't have to. And further, that's kinda what you get from him - raw and uncut language. Besides, you'll see worse in a "R" rated movie now a days than you will hear in this book.
I definitely recommend this book. It's raw, real, and relevant. There are parts that made me laugh, cringe, and also stand up and take notice. Pick this one up.

Charlamagne is known to be outspoken and very opinionated. He is a "no holds barred" type of person so I didn't know what I was getting into when I started the book. I didn't know if it would be a bunch of celebrity gossip and behind the scenes dishing or if it would primarily be his story. I was quite impressed that it seemed to be an unfiltered account of his life. It was a little slow (meaning some of the stories could have been shortened) in parts, but overall I was thoroughly impressed with his life story and the gems dropped along the way.

First let me say I am a white middle aged female but I have a young son so I have been exposed to Charlemagne I enjoyed the book until I got to the 80% of white people are devils, really?? How does that help anything, That's just feeding into racism, that's racism at its finest. I have black friends that are awesome and smarter than lots of white people I know and more successful. It's just stupid and ruined the book and Charlemagne for me. Yuk, when most people are working to end racism he throws gasoline on the fire with this silly bullshit.

Where do I start? I heard Charlamange and Elvis Duran talking up this book on air. Once Charlamange started talking about the book, I was hooked, I was driving and told my wife to purchase the ebook and send it to my phone so I could listen to it over the car while I drove for work. I finished this Ebook in 2.5 Days. Here's my full review of the book.
I hate to Read and listening hasn't been much better, this book captivated me from the first paragraph. It was tied together with personal attributes and failures, he was real, he hides nothing. This book has real world language and harsh realities. It teaches you to accept criticism, embrace changes as they're given to you and to look at the positives of life.
This book is a must for anyone who's in a dark place, it really made me appreciate the small things in life and look past the negatives that I was facing. I would recommend this book to everyone.

This book is a "Awesome" read, "Encouraging, inspiring, thought provoking and entertaining". Charlamagne writes this book in a prose that speaks to the young black youth, as well as that individual that still has that idea or thought of making a mark on their own lives, as well as others. He gives a unique and REAL, point of view and makes no excuses about it. There are so many things to take away from this book, i.e., "Dreams Can Come True", "Don't Give Up", "Encourage Yourself" "God Gives Us All Unique Gifts" and so many more. My Family being from South Carolina and coming from a really small town, made it easy to relate with never forgetting where you come from and staying true to the mantra, "There is No Place Like Home". Charlamagne, Thank you so much, for being true to yourself, having the courage and humility to stay strong, and for giving a book, that gives us so much of you and so many roads, avenues, that we each, Young and Old can make a choice to travel. READ THIS BOOK AND SHARE IT WITH SOMEONE!

I am a very huge fan or Charamagne on air so I was excited to read his book, and he didn't fail to deliver. The thing about this book was that he remained true to his character. Learning about his upbringing and career also will make those who don't really care for him to see him in a different light. The brother explains how he worked his ass off, networked, learned from his mistakes and paid his gains forward. (I also read the book in his voice which made it more enjoyable)
I would absolutely recommend this book.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book- I am a fan of the Breakfast Club radio show and am familiar with the author's blunt style of communicating. He is known for 'honest truth' and can be a little vulgar. I feel it could have been a little more polished- for instance, the 'jewels' of wisdom only appear in the later half of the book and it could have been a great addition to each chapter. I like knowing a little more of the motivations behind his character and the book contains great advice as well. I'm a picky reader when it comes to biographies and usually don't finish them if I'm not engaged; I took 1 1/2 days to finish.

I wanted to see what CThaGod’s take of “privilege” was. He does not disappoint. Everyone has some type of privilege and it is up to the individual to maximize that privilege. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed the book. I enjoyed his transparency wholeheartedly. I did see a few typos that were annoying and the alien story was a bit much, but again, overall it was a good book.

Quick synopsis: Faith, persistence, remaining uncompromising to your truth and integrity, and trusting that it’ll all work out even if it doesn’t seem like, always pays off. “Putting the weed in the bag” is the key theme throughout the entire book. Remaining authentic and hopeful all while always putting the weed in the bag is the winning formula. Hold the highest virtue as priority and stick by it. For example, he always says, “listener benefit trumps everything else.” Charlamagne was always for the people, even when the people weren’t for him. And though he is brash, he makes it very clear that his aim is honesty, never disrespect. (Although, that’s still pretty hard to believe every time I remember how he SONNED Lil Mama— nonetheless, every word written in this book is admirable and impactful). As a young on-air talent just beginning to blossom along my career journey, this book served as my saving grace on the most depressing of days.

I listened to his audiobook. Lots of fun! Lots of wisdom I'm 57, white male, not into Hip Hop. I come from the different side of the tracks that he did. It could be called "Human Privilege" even though it's from Charlamagne's black American experience, he doesn't glorify his thug experiences. But uses them as lessons. He explains his spirituality in practical terms. This book inspires me to live everyday honestly and humbly. Some reviewers say black men should read this book. Well ALL people should read this book and they will be inspired by it.

I had only heard of this young man this year! They post a lot of celebrity guest interviews from his radio show on youtube and I ended up working backwards from celebrities I was interested in to seeing his presence time and time again in the mix. One of the guests mentioned the success of his book, so I looked it up and purchased the Audible version. Very interesting success story in his own words.

My most recent read, great book! I appreciate his honesty and loyalty to his hometown, his race, the human race and those whom paved the way for his success.
Reading this book also help me to understand Wendy Williams a tad bit more. And of course Larry more.
I'm not going to lie, prior to reading it I pondered WHY he would title it what he did Charlamagne Tha God Black Privilege: Opportunity Comes to Those Who Create It. While reading chapter by chapter the reason was revealed and his reasoning was explained towards the end.
Anywho, good read on several levels.

I just finished the audiobook and truly loved 95% of it..which is huge! 5% I just felt he gave a little too much detail but that does not change my review from 5 stars, not one bit! I believe the audioversion makes it much more relatable. You feel as if he is sitting there, with you, telling you about his life, while dropping "God Gems" here and there. After listening to this book I feel motivated and empowered, but also left questioning my current decisions. I think a large majority of people would love this book but I don't think it is for everyone. If you are looking for an interesting, vulgar, but REAL read...this may be just what you are looking for! I will be buying the physical book to add to my library and will be recommending it any chance I get!

I've never taken Charlamage seriously. In my opinion, he's a borderline misogynistic hotep who needlessly gave Tomi Lahren a platform. Basically, he's the younger version of Steve Harvey. Nevertheless, I am an avid book reader and I forced myself to give this one a try. I must give credit where credit is due, hence the the five star rating. This book is awesome. Though I still consider C tha God a borderline misogynistic hotep...at least now I know he's not a dumb one. To sum it all up, "I'm never going to dismiss anything until I explore whether it might have some value for me." --BP

loveeee this book, humorous, insightful, very detailed! he has a story for everything and advice for everyone. It's brutally honest, funny, relatable and inspiring. Felt like I was having a personal conversation with him. Doesn't matter your race, gender, religion, everyone should put this on their list of books to read. Never liked him on the B.C, but now I understand his story and purpose. He's not that bad.

I find that the best narration comes from books read by their authors. Clearly Charlamagne has mastered the skills of communicating on audio. I found this to be a very easy listen. You don't have to agree with Charlamagne to appreciate that he has a great story and some very smart insights into life as well. This was an enjoyable book.

Great story about the rise of modern personality. Lessons are basic, but so fundamental that many fail to apply them in their own lives. Loved the ending about there is a little god in all of us. Being a long time follower of Charlamagne, I now understand the depth of his spirituality and his purpose in life. Really looking forward to see how he will continue to transform. I feel there is much more service left in him to provide others.

I was sincerely impressed and surprised with this book! In the beginning I'm not sure what I expected, and even hesitated around the idea of purchasing, however I do not regret buying this book! He is such an entertaining story teller, and after listening I found it highly motivated as well. Do not hesitate to buy this book, I promise you will love it as much as I did.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book as Charlamagne gives you the nuggets of life straight up with no chaser! It was a pleasure to learn about his background and upbringing as well as the trials and tribulations he's experienced to get to where he is today. I'm going to try my best to create my own opportunities for my family and our future. I will not let the privilege of others get in the way of my privilege.

I haven't really followed Charlemagne but this book was really good. I appreciate his honesty. Like he said because he puts his own stuff out there no one can hold anything over him. A great way to live owning your good stuff and your bad stuff.
