With her usual aplomb, Shari Tapscott has taken a classic fairy tale and put her own spin on it.

Etta is the miller's daughter, and as such her life is very run-of-the-mill (which I think is where the expression comes fromt). When she meets Beau, a handsome young man, she is intrigued, and when she finds out he is the heir to a noble estate that has been taken over by a vengeful ogre, it sets forth a chain of events that are both thrilling and fun to read. Oh, and there's a talking cat, calling every shot. Yeah, just go with it.

This type of story is not my particular cup of tea, but Ms. Tapscott's writing it so wonderful, I'm happy to make an exception in her case. This novella was a quick, breezy read that makes you want more. (And oh, watch out for the twist at the end!)

I found this retelling to be sweet, full of adventure and a little magic. I enjoyed Puss and his scheming the most and believe him to be a very well depicted cat. I am concerned about the fact that Etta and Beau standing in a bush could be scandalous, but Etta spending hours alone in the woods with Kerrick, eating dinner with Beau, or hawking with the Baron would not have been ruinous to her reputation. Thank goodness Puss was there to chaperone! Distances were also not portrayed realistically, taking only a day to walk or ride anywhere, unless these are small kingdoms. Aside from these minor annoyances, I enjoyed the story to the end.

I loved how this book was written---in first person from two of the main characters alternating point of views. That way of writing, for me, is very exciting and will not lull you to sleep. I loved the characters, especially the know-it-all and helpful feline, Puss. The plot was clever and the ending was memorable. I will definitely read more of Miss Tapscott's works!

I pre-ordered this book because I LOVED the Eldentimber series and this author is one of my favorites. I have read all her book and enjoyed them all. I'm such a fan. If you haven't read the Eldentimber series, you really must.

I can honestly say that I worried about reading this book. I've about had enough of fairy tale re-tellings and I was so afraid I wouldn't like it. But I did like it. Very much. I should never have doubted.

The characters drew me in so quickly. I loved how the story took shape and developed. The touch of fairy tale/fantasy was perfect. I will say that I didn't love this one as much as the Eldentimber series, but it's a close second.

Great retelling. Enjoyable with great twists that make it interesting and fun. Clean, sweet, and with adventure. Loved reading it. The main characters are fun and it's enjoyable to hear about the story from both perspectives.

I think this is my favorite Shari Tapscott book yet. Etta was a wonderful protagonist - thoughtful and kind and brave but still imperfect. I loved her friendship with Beau too. The love story is very well done - realistic but still romantic! And the ogre's enchantment over people was such an interesting twist. Really good pacing too. I started this book in the morning and had a hard time putting it down all day. Can't wait for the next one in this series!!
