This tale of sixth century Arthurian Wales describes a rough early history of the beautiful friendly land of rolling hills covered with sheep and hard working Border Collies that I once had the good fortune to visit. The Welsh and Saxons fought with each other, King Arthur’s family members fought each other with whatever troops they had at hand, and the alliances seemed to change from day to day. Maybe Arthur could have explained it all, but he played only a minor role in the story.
I had minor problems pronouncing names because the Welsh language does not seem related to the Latin or Germanic based languages I’m used to, but had more difficulty trying to follow the plot line. The protagonists seemed to travel back and forth to houses of friends and the king’s relatives where they might have a dinner and a nice chat or get thrown in a dungeon with no warning or explanation, depending on the host’s whims of the moment.
If you also have trouble keeping track of which character is trustworthy today (never mind last night), fix yourself some fish and chips, put on some Lloyd Webber songs and try again later. The “good guy” characters are very nice, the pace moves right along, and it’s a good read. I couldn’t give it five stars because it just stopped dead at the end. The author’s historic notes were helpful but where did everyone go?

I absolutely loved this unique and very different version of the King Arthur legend. The story is told through the eyes of Myrddin, one of Arthur's knights, and Nell, a young former nun. Both share visions of Arthur's coming death at the battle of Camlann, and unite in a race to change Arthur's destiny and the future of Britain. The story is fast-paced and yet beautifully told, the growing romance between Myrddin and Nell is compelling, and the history of a dark and brutal--and yet heroic--time leaps from the page. Highly recommended.
Lie Down with Lions :: Jackdaws :: The Pillars of Creation (Sword of Truth) :: gripping story of a mother-daughter bond that could not be broken – inspired by true events :: Twelve Pillars

I am on the side that Arthur existed so I'm glad to find this series. Not the magical versions of recent. Characters in this book do have the sight but people through the ages have made that claim. Maybe we would be as receptive if not overwhelmed by so much modern input. But I am certainly sorry for these characters who have visions nightly and even sometimes unexpectedly while awake! This adds mystery dimension that keeps the story going. Not only a who done it but also will this happen. Love it!

I really enjoy Sarah Woodbury's books. She has a bit of mystery and a little romance all mixed together. While there is some "knightly" fighting and bloodshed in the book, it isn't so much that it makes it hard to read. There is suspense and surprises throughout the book. The romance is sweet without explicit details. I enjoy Sarah's books because she keeps them moving along at a good pace. Sometimes when reading books I get bored with a chapter, because I feel it drags on a bit too long, but I never have that with Sarah's books. I would recommend this book to anyone that likes to read about knights, castles, mysteries and a bit of romance.

I really liked this historical romance, and am planning to read more by the author. The descriptions and story were excellent and the characters were very interesting. I loved how it all came together, the interconnections with the dreams were so intriguing. The only reason it moves from a 4 star rating for me is that I was expecting more from the romance. Now that I know to expect subdued romances from Woodbury, I'm sure I won't be the last bit disappointed.

The dark Ages were a time of conflict for King Author. His beloved wife is dead and his nephews are fighting to rule his kingdom while he still rules. Inter the couple f or this series, two old warriors, he is thirty-five and she was a nun. I`m a fan of these series that need a lot of space to cover the lives if the characters.

Set in the final year of King Arthur this is a violent story about two people thrown together by the events during the civil war between Modred and Arthur. The story is well written and ends on a cliff hanger.

That was more like a chapter of a book. And I felt like I'd missed the book before. I usually like this author's books but I didn't like this as a stand alone book. Will say more after I've read the next chapters...I mean books.

A very good tale if you are a fan of the Authurian Legends or history - depending upon what historians you believe. All three books in this series of the Lion of Wales books are good and are hard to put down. Also a quick read, which I love.
I do recommend them as delicious mind candy!

This was okay, probably pretty good if you like history. This could have been the author's imagination, for all I know about history. This was definitely not historical romance. Not much romance here only a hint. No recommendation from me. Although I did read it all. It was difficult for me to get through, history would be better with some romance.

While the Arthurian court provides a backdrop and characters to flesh out this story, the plot is centered around two original characters who are a delight to read about. There is nothing very romantic about this world: there is a war going on, and people are dying, being tortured. However, the book portrays the violence of the time without resorting to graphic depictions of battle.
I would definitely recommend this book. With a rich world, round and dynamic characters, and an interesting plot, the book definitely keeps you entertained until the very end.
