If you have a child, know a child, or just even need some encouragement as an adult—go get this book now! Because we all long and desire to know how we fit into this world. We all need assurance that we are deeply loved and a unique creation. And this book delivers on just that through vibrant and adorable artwork, and inspiring words.

It is a story told through the eyes of a narrator reminding a precious little girl that God made her, thinks about her, sees her, delights in her, and smiles over her. Amen! Words we all need to hear deep in our soul.

As someone who is preparing for an adoption, and loves collecting books for my soon-to-be little one, I was excited to read in this book where it says: “Out of billions of faces from cultures, all races, people God made, from all different places, God knew your name. Your picture is framed. God’s family without you would not be the same.” It reminds us that everyone, from everywhere, brings unique color, rhyme and rhythm to the world through God’s great design.

The book is recommend for age is 3-8 years old, but as an adult, I found this book to be a tender devotional read to remind myself who I am in God, and that He adores me. So, I recommend this book for all ages and places! It echoes what your soul wants and needs to hear.

I love a good children’s book, and I especially love one that has great illustrations. This book hits both of those things. When God Made You by Matthew Paul Turner is such a beautifully written book for children. There is a ton of rhyme in the book which makes it fun for kids. I read this book several times to my daughter, who is just under a year and a half, and she enjoyed listening as I read because of the fun rhyme to the words. She may not have understood a lot of what I was saying, but she still liked the book. More importantly though, this book has a beautiful message and one that I believe is important for children to learn early on. The message of the book is God created each person for a special purpose and he knows every part of them and they are loved by Him just as they are. Kids need to know this deep inside of them (well, adults do too.)

I also want to point out that the illustrations, by David Catrow, in this book are absolutely wonderful. It is full of bright colors and great drawings. The pictures tell a story of their own. The story of the pictures goes right along with the words of the book, they flow beautifully together. I enjoyed looking at these illustrations just as much as reading the book.

I would recommend this book to anyone who has kids. I think this book would also make a great gift. I’m sure that I will read this book to my daughter many more times in the coming years.

Geared toward kids ages three to seven, this little book is designed to let kids know that they are special and unique and were created by God, whom knows them and loves them inside and out.

A very cute, unnamed little girl is the story’s protagonist. There is no plot, but the rhyming message is clear: God created YOU, you, knows all about you and He is happiest when you are being you.

The illustrations are beautiful, but after the first few pages, don’t seem relevant.

I give When God Made You 3 out of 5 stars in Julie’s world.

When God Made You – A Review

When God Made You, written by Matthew Paul Turner and illustrated by David Catrow, is a delightful children’s book. Written completely in rhyme it brings to mind the timeless stories of Dr. Seuss. The story tells about how God made each of us unique and has given each talents and abilities to be used to make the world a better place. It encourages children to be themselves and to create, discover, and explore.

The story (poem?) itself could easily stand alone, but with the beautiful, vibrant illustrations it becomes so much more. Through the illustrations you see the story of a young black girl with purple overalls on and braids in her hair leaving behind a younger sister and going on an adventure where she uses her talents to help someone she comes across. I’ve already read this story multiple times to my own children and I look forward to introducing When God Made You to the students I work with- little girls- many of whom have similar braids in their own hair- who I hope will see themselves in the story and be inspired by it.

When God made you, He had a plan. He knew exactly how to make you, from the top of your head to the tips of your toes. God knew that the world needed you, and He wants you to embrace who you are and be yourself.
Many young children have a great desire to know where they fit into our world. This wonderful children’s book tells them to embrace the wonderful things that make them who they are.
I found this to be a very beautiful book for children. The illustrations are very fanciful and gorgeous, depicting a little girl using her creativity to cheer up someone and then to add some beauty to the world.
The rhyme is one that you really must read slower than many other children’s books. The slower you read it, though, the more earnest and heartfelt it comes across. At times the flow stumbles a tad bit but not greatly.
My daughter absolutely loves this book. The little girl fascinates her and the vibrant colors the girl paints on the bird entertains her to no end.
I would recommend this book to small children who question why they are here and what their purpose might be, as well as any other children.

You are created uniquely.

There is no one else like you.

You are always on God's mind.

These are all sentiments that Eric and I want to teach Sarabeth and help her to come to believe. We want her to see the beauty in each and every person created. To be able to see beyond what is and create something new and beautiful from it.

We got a chance to read When God Made You by Matthew Paul Turner, illustrated by David Catrow, with Sarabeth last week. New books are always exciting days in our house, but this was was a little more special. Sarabeth was engaging with the photos. She was excited to turn the page, and we heard quite a few exclamations as the bright colors captured her imagination.

When God Made You was written to help children about what makes every one unique. To discover character traits, talents, and personalities. It helps them learn that they have a special place in the world that only they can step into. It reminds children that God made them with a purpose in mind. With a plan in mind, God gave each child the likes and dislikes, skills and abilities that they need to carry out his dream for them.

Even though the target age for this book is children 3-8 years old, Sarabeth was able to follow along with the story as I read it. The pictures engaged her in a big way.

One note I've seen in several reviews is that some of the words are too big for toddlers to understand (Revue, debut). SB wasn't distracted by these words. But I do think they will give us chances to talk about what they mean as she gets older and better engages in language. I see them as opportunities for learning rather than distractions from the message.

My greatest desire would be to fulfill this Scripture:
"I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth." 3 John 1:4

Truly, the Lord has blessed me with my children and I try my very best to instill in them a love for the Lord. My hope is that this discipleship of my children will lead to their ownership in their faiths. That they may walk in the truth.

One way I've found necessary in our lives to teach them is through books. We are bookworms, my children and I (my husband has come very far in his non-reading ways lol). My boys naturally lounge with a book daily. Even Princess, as small as she is, likes to be read to. One of her first words was "buh" which means "book." She is quite violent in placing them on your lap for you to read to her but it's with a good heart, a bookworm heart.

I love to have books that speak of God. Our favorites include "Look What God Made," "God Loves You More Than That," and "Captain Sun" comics. Another I've added to our list is "When God Made You" by Matthew Paul Turner.

Children naturally like to hear about themselves so this book really reaches them on that intimate level. When God made you, He made you wonderful. My favorite line from the book is,

"Out of billions of faces from cultures, all races,
people God made, from all different places,
God knew your name. Your picture is framed.
God's family without you would not be the same."

What a lovely picture of our Father's love for us. I greatly appreciate how "When God Made You," Turner really affirms God's love for us, his children. It's a lovely word picture written in a lyrical manner.

The illustrations are gorgeous. Very colorful, bright, artistic. The illustrator is David Catrow. He has a fine attention to detail with textures on the walls, the main character's curls, the fur on animals. The illustrations are just lovely to look at; they will keep your children's attentions.

This whimsical, glorious picture book debuts today, but it is already considered a classic at my house. Too many ‘Christian’ books for kids are, unfortunately, just not written at the same caliber as ‘regular’ children’s books. As a mom who reads a ton of children’s books, I am not kidding when I say that When God Made You is truly special.

Written by Matthew Paul Turner and illustrated by David Catrow (I Ain’t Gonna Paint No More), When God Made You features a celebration of all of the characteristics God loves about each of us. The repeated message is acceptance and affirmation that all of our differences–that our uniqueness–is part of God’s plan and design.

An Important Message of Acceptance
This book has such a special message for kids, and the fun sing-song rhyming text grabs their attention and makes the message even more memorable. It is just as fun to read aloud as it is to look at:

“God pictured your nose and all ten of your toes.
The sound of your voice? God had it composed.
The lines on your hands, your hair, every strand,
God knew every detail like it was all planned.”

All of us could use some encouragement and reassurance from time to time–kids especially. That’s why this book is so special! Everyone, no matter their age, will feel assured from this book’s message that their unique traits are part of a greater design. This comforting message flows throughout the words and pictures in God Made You, and this reassurance leaves readers with a smile on their face.

Each page is so beautifully illustrated with special hidden surprises, that it’s difficult to turn away from it. David Catrow is one of my favorite illustrators, and this book proves why. And now, Matthew Paul Turner is one of my favorite children’s book authors.

When God Made You is my top choice for new children’s picture books this year.

Go ahead…celebrate YOU!

Powerful words, especially for children with special needs. This book is so beautifully written and illustrated. The words went straight to my heart. Through this book, I was able to open dialogue with my child about how special she is. God didn't make a mistake when he made her little body. Even though her body works differently than other children her age, God had a plan and he knew that the world needed her.

When God made YOU, somehow God knew
That the world needed someone exactly like you!
Sometimes as parents to a special needs child, we question God. We want to know what was His plan and His purpose. Seeing these words, reading them to my child, they were a balm to my soul. God doesn't make mistakes and He has plans for my beautiful family. God had a plan when he chose to give me a child that was differently-abled.

This is a delightful book that your child will love. The illustrations by David Catrow are absolutely stunning, imaginative and quirky...exactly like my little one.

If you're looking for a Children's book that has a good message and more substance to it, I would strongly suggest this one.

It is so important that our children know that they are loved by God and that they are special to Him.

This book is well suited for children ages 3-8. Important to note for children's books, that the book is hardcover with paper pages. I would love to see a board book edition for the younger audiences in the future as I can see this being a well-worn and loved addition to a child's library.

About the Book:

YOU, you... God thinks about you.
God was thinking of you long before your debut.
From early on, children are looking to discover their place in the world and longing to understand how their personalities, traits, and talents fit in. The assurance that they are deeply loved and a unique creation in our big universe is certain to help them spread their wings and fly.
Through playful, charming rhyme and vivid, fantastical illustrations, When God Made You inspires young readers to learn about their own special gifts and how they fit into God's divine plan as they grow, explore, and begin to create for themselves.
'Cause when God made YOU, somehow God knew
That the world needed someone exactly like you!

My Review:

When God Made You is a sweet and special book. This is a book that will convey to a child just how special and unique they truly are. As we grow older we either forget that important fact or just don't believe that a big ole great God could love little ole imperfect us. So I feel like this is a great book to share with our children because it will get them in the habit of seeing themselves as God sees them.

God knew us before the world every did. We are truly unique, loved, and always on His mind. We are exceptional. We are children that belong directly to Him and He knew our name, face, and frame. A sweet book that will quickly remind our children of the dynamic relationship between them and their creator.

With creative prose and rhyme this book will tell a story to them that will leave them happy and carefree to live in the world God created especially for them. The illustrations are phenomenal as well. Full of color and life! This book is a winner!

I love David Catrow's illustrations, and he has created an exuberant main character to accompany the text of this book. Turner's rhyming text calls to mind the phrases of Happy Birthday to You by Dr. Seuss. Both authors emphasize the unique nature of each child. Seuss - "There is no one alive who is you-er than you." Turner - "you're perfectly crafted one of a kind." But as you can see from the title, Turner has a more spiritual thrust to his message. He pulls in details about every strand of hair and how "God was thinking of you long before your debut" that allude to lines from the Bible about how well the Creator knows each of us even before we are born.

As the text speaks of how God hopes we will become "A dreamer who dreams in big and small themes, one who keeps dreaming in journeys upstream," we see the child helping out an artist in the park and her paintings full of vivid colors coming to life. While the colors spread across the pages, the words hold out hope that a child can grow up to be one "who views others as sisters and brothers." In a time when people are asking for more understanding and rallying around efforts like "We need diverse books," this it the type of story that we need.

This would make a wonderful gift for a baby shower or a birthday present for a young reader. The affirmation of each child's worth and potential, the joyful explosions of color, and the happy rhymes are a difficult combination to resist.

The illustrations for this book are stunning, first off. Love the colors and they represent all of the variety and individuality God has created in mankind. The message is affirming and my little people loved that. What was a little tricky, was holding their attention with the verbiage. It doesn’t read like a Dr. Suess that’s for sure. It was more like reading a tongue twister aloud. That’s why I didn’t absolutely l love this book. However, I’m of the opinion that the message inside is worth the oral gymnastics. Having said that, there was more than one request for a repeat of this book at snuggle time. Children love to love and be loved. This book is all about that. So I give it a big high-five for making little people feel special.

If every foster child got one of these in his or her belongings when placed in care and someone kindly sat them in their lap and read them this book, about how much God loves them and how He delights in them and the way He made them, it would make my heart happy. It might not solve world peace, but you have to start somewhere. I’d like to buy a case of these books for every social worker to give away to the kids on their case loads.

These books could be placed in medical offices, public libraries, hospitals and certainly school libraries. Really. Check it out more on the publisher’s website here. Watch the videos and read an excerpt.

Through a whirlwind of colors and rhyme, this book embraces the beauty of life, the joy of individuality and the treasure known as diversity.

The cover already pulls into the fitting atmosphere with it's clear, religious title and the glorious freedom as the little girl falls through a sky of colors. Warm thoughts and feelings are immediately brought to the forefront of the mind and hold on the entire way through.

The message is clear: you are precious. It's a necessary statement kids can never get enough of or hear too much about. The rhyming text brings this across on every page in different ways, allowing the reader/listener to be enveloped by the encouraging message again and again. The heavily religious tone encourages without weighing down. The vocabulary is a little advanced for younger listeners and a few words will need explanation even for older ones. The wording and rhymes are beautiful, but sometimes, the flow stumbles a little.

Alone the illustrations make this book a sheer joy to read. Vivid colors invite to imagination and fantasy. The characters are lovingly depicted and offer a wonderful glance into the glorious diversity of life, all on their own. It's easy to flip through the pages again and again just to get lost in the artwork.

Summed up, this is a lovely book with a beautiful message. The text and length lean more to ages 4+ and up. The text is fine, but it's the illustrations which bring the book to life and create a fantastic, warming journey.

I received this book from Blogging for Books and thoroughly enjoyed the chance to dive into these pages. So I wanted to leave my thoughts.

David Catrow is an imaginative illustrator I adore. He is a master at splashing fun throughout this adorable picture book with a powerful message. This writer and illustrator team help make memorable moments for parents and child.
I never forget books that this illustrator has created.

This book helps generate a dialogue between parent and child; about how God has a plan for their life and how it changes as the child grows and explores the world around them.

The author writes, “Cause when God made you, somehow God knew that the world needed someone exactly like you!”

Near the end the author pens this, “I made you…A you who views others as sisters and brothers and lives by three words: Love One Another.”

Author Matthew Paul Turner says this about his book, “It gives little ones the assurance that they are deeply loved and a unique creation in our big universe will encourage them to spread their wings and fly.”

The message and the incredibly fun illustrations will have you and your little one putting this picture book on the night stand to read over and over again.

Having two young granddaughters, I am always on the search for new children’s books. But not just any book. I want to share stories which will draw them closer to God and their identity in Him.

When God Made You by Matthew Paul Turner is beautiful! It is a story with words which will speak into the heart of every child. The illustrations are colorful, winsome, and leap out from every page, catching both the eye and the heart.

The story brings to mind Psalm 139 with a beautiful rhyme all its own:

An exclusive design, one God refined,
you’re perfectly crafted one of a kind.
‘Cause when God made you,
somehow God knew
that the world needed someone
exactly like you.

It also brings the powerful message that God loves all of us, regardless of race or the places we live:

Out of billions of faces from cultures, all races,
people God made, from all different places.
God knew your name. Your picture is framed.
God’s family without you would not be the same.

This book is beautiful in its message, illustrations, and rhyme. Children will want to read it repeatedly as they will feel affirmed and loved on each page. This is a book we will all want to read – no matter our age – as we always need this powerful reminder of our unique design and purpose.

Once you see and read this book, you will want to buy one for every child in your life.

Beautiful! A visually engrossing read about how God knows all about you and that He made you. He made you for a purpose and gifted you with each of your personal attributes.

The illustrations leap with joy from the page as the characters are colorfully splayed across the pages finding how God has a purpose and plan for them and uniquelly fitted them for that plan.

Awash in soft pastels from every color of the rainbow the pages are beautifully illustrated with charming, exuberant, happy critters and characters.

After being told in rhyme that God made you uniquely, the reader further reads that he is to....

Discover. Explore! Have faith but love more.
And learn and relearn all that God made you for.
Use your talents and passions, those gifts that God fashioned
Think up ideas and then put them to action.

The story also brings in the "Love one another" theme and touches on the color in all races and kind.

I see this as a beautifully colorful book that envelopes the child with the wonderful fact that God made him or her. God has a wonderful plan for the child and that no matter your race or talent, your shape or your form, God's purpose is there for you and He wants you to live it and fulfill it.

When God Made You, by Matthew Paul Turner is a beautifully illustrated children's book for ages 3 - 8. The colors and pictures will definitely keep a child's interest. In a rhyming format, it tells the story of how God made you. Quite honestly, I wish that I had this book when my children were young so I could have better encouraged their personalities, and helped them to realize that they are who they are because that is who God designed them to be; and no two people are the same. Also, that God created them for a purpose.

It presents a beautiful picture of so many parts of who we are: "An exclusive design, one God refined, you're a perfectly crafted one of a kind. 'Cause when God made you somehow God knew that the world needed someone exactly like you." "God pictured your nose and all ten of your toes. The sound of your voice? God had it composed. The lines on your hands, your hair, every strand, God knew every detail like it was all planned."

In reading it the first time, I actually thought, "Wow, I never really thought of it quite this way". Although I really love the book, it is definitely one that an adult would have to read to the child and help to explain. Because of the rhyming pattern, you really have to think about some of what is being said and I feel it would be difficult for a young child to understand on their own, "'Cause God loves you creating, your true self displaying, when light on the inside through art is portraying". It doesn't happen often, but a few pages would definitely be over a child's head. I would not discredit this book for those few instances though. The points being made are wonderful and I would definitely recommend this book for any young child's shelf … and what better way is there to spend time with a young child then to share a book with them - it is time well worth investing!

I absolutely love this book by Matthew Paul Turner! It has such an amazing and powerful message. When God Made You is a children's book written in rhyming verse with beautiful, colorful, and vibrant illustrations. It speaks to the uniqueness of every child, each one truly original.

From the title, it is obvious that this particular book is written from a Christian worldview. It highlights the value God has placed on his creation. God knew you before you were born and created you to be unique and special. Author Matthew Turner encourages the reader to follow their dreams, and explore their passions...to dream. My favorite verse says:

So be you- fully you- a show stopping revue. Live your life in full color, every tint, every hue. Discover, Explore! Have faith, but love more. And learn and relearn all that God made you for.

This book is whimsical with lovely images that make this a must have. I find it to be appropriate for ages 3-8. It would be a perfect addition to any Easter basket! The book focuses on a little girl, however I think a boy or girl would enjoy it. I received a review copy of this book from BloggingforBooks and was not required to give a positive review. My daughter gave this book to me for Mothers Day this year. I am 51 years old and an avid reader. This book touched my heart in such a special way. I have said many times through the years that I am just me! I have always struggled with feeling not like the church and not like the world if that make sense. I just always was what my mom calls a free spirit. I love beyond measure and feel that God creates us all to be individuals so we can reach people. My daughter is so in tune to me and hss witnessed my struggles with being molded. When she gave me the book, she let me know that somehow I have done something right. She has such a kind free spirit herself. This book is not only for children though I intend to read it to the many who grace my doors. I reread it this morning with my breakfast and just wept! Beautifully written and a true result of using your talents for a higher purpise. Bravo!!

Matthew Paul Turner has written some light-hearted but theologically sound and culturally engaging books for adults. His newest book teaches an important lesson, that you were made exactly the way God meant for you to be made! When God Made You follows an African-American girl through her day, as she explores her neighborhood and lets her imagination take flight. David Catrow's illustrations become more vividly colorful and wildly imaginative as the book progresses, perfectly paired with Turner's whimsical verse.

The back cover says this is for kids 3-8. That sounds about right. It's a good bed time or story time book which will bear repeated readings. The pictures are detailed and complex enough that curious eyes will find something new every time they read it.

Like any good kids book, the message of When God Made You resonates with all of us, not just the ostensible target audience. I am unique. I am loved. I carry the imago dei. I am a vessel to bring God's love to others. The message is simple, powerful, universal, and never to be forgotten.

From gloriously colorful end-covers to dreamily imaginative pictures of a small child running through life, David Catrow’s images make Paul Turner’s When God Made You into an artistic delight. Which makes perfect sense, as the story tells of one small girl learning her place in God’s artistry. The tale is told with unforced rhythm and rhyme, respects its readers with well-chosen word craft, and gently repeats the theme that God chooses, sees and delights in the real you. Appropriately, the imagined child responds with imagination, creating images, delighting in ideas, and learning the wonders of who we are each made to be. Peacemakers, movers and shakers, brothers and sisters all over the world, God calls us to love one another and this beautiful book echoes the call delightfully. Highly recommended.

"When God Made You" by Matthew Paul Turner, book review- children's book

Everyone wants to be assured that they are loved! And children from a young age long for love and acceptance. Parents are the first to give this love. And as Christian parents, we desire to instill the knowledge that each child is made in God's image and loved by Him.

This precious picture book by Matthew Paul Turner uses easy to understand words, rhymes and whimsical pictures to softly and carefully convey the message of God's unique love for each of us.

The illustrations are a bit cartoonish, not realistic, but add a sweet tone to the book. This book will be treasured for many years to come and be a bedtime favorite.

Both my son and I enjoyed reading this delightful book together. The vivid illustrations and the charming lyrical rhyming phrases makes this book one that you will want on your book shelf to pull out again and again to read with your child.

Every child needs to know they are special, and loved. This sweet book helps children see how they are not only God’s masterpiece, but designed with great care, and thought about long before their debut.

This book is ideal for pre-school age children. However, even young elementary age children will delight in the story and the beautiful illustrations.

I give this book 5 stars

This review is for the book "When God Made You" by Matthew Paul Turner. My kids absolutely love these types of books and stories, so I had to get this one for them. This book is really cute. The illustrations are beautiful, creative, and colorful, and my kids loved them. The book talks about how special each one of us is, which is a really important thing for kids to grasp. The book rhymes, which of course usually is more entertaining for kids and more fun for us adults to read out loud! And what a great premise - that God made us exactly the way He wanted us. I love it. Perfect for the kids in your life!

Thank you to Waterbrook Multonah for a copy of the book.

This book, When God Made You, is one which made me smile from the time I saw the cover until I turned the last page. Matthew Paul Turner created a book full of sing-song rhyme which will make children realize how special they are to God. The illustrations by David Catrow are as creative and beautiful as the verses inside. Just hearing someone read the ways that God has shown he loves you helps to draw the reader and child closer to God and each other. I cannot say enough good things about this book.

I highly recommend this book to parents, grandparents, anyone that would like to encourage a young one with God's love.

When God Made You tells children that they are uniquely made by God, for a special reason. Children are told that God made them with a specific purpose, a role that He created them to fill. The illustrations are eye-catching and colorful, as you can see from the front of the book.

I appreciate the message in this book. God does create each person on purpose with specific gifts and talents for him to use, and He expects us to use our talents for His glory even when we are children. This book is very encouraging and esteem-building, and I like that. I like the message in this book and most of the pictures. Some of them are a little strange, but children would enjoy them. :)

The message of When God Made You is so simple, but one that has such a large impact on a child's worldview and sense of self. It clearly tells your child not only how deeply loved they are, but that they were planned by a loving creator exactly the way that they look, exactly who they are, and their exact abilities. And they are encouraged to be confident in who they are, so elegantly phrased:
"So be YOU--fully you--
a show-stopping revue. Live your life in full color, every tint, every hue."
It also emphasizes diversity, kindness, acceptance, and embracing our differences as being beautiful and a part of God's plan.
With each rhyme and flow of the text along with the whimsical illustrations, your child will be affirmed, uplifted, and inspired to pass along that love. It's every thing I could ever want for my children.

When God Made You is a book that every parent should have on their book shelf. I encourage you to pick up a copy and read it with your children; it will not only encourage them, but also will uplift and inspire you too.

I received a copy of the book from the publisher.

Paul Turner has released a new children's book, When God Made You. This a beautifully illustrated children's book is launching today. A hope-filled- rhyming text helps encourage children to be who God made them to be. I loved the reminder that each of us are made with unique abilities and gifts and creativity - when used the way God intended, incredible things can be accomplished.

The pictures are colorful and engaging. The wording is a little difficult for my toddlers to understand at times, but it gave us lots of talking points. And I am sure it is a book we will read over and over, continuing to celebrate their individuality.

I received this book from Waterbrook Multnomah in exchange for an honest review.

This book is wonderful and beautiful. Just reading as an adult, I was reminded in my heart about God's love for me, and I can't wait to use this book to communicate that same truth to my daughter. The short sing-songy rhymes combined with the bold, beautiful, daring, colorful illustrations inspire the reader to live a bold, kind, and loving life confident in God's love for them as a uniquely created individual. The story speaks of God's dreams for you as the girl in the pictures finds an artist friend and creates dreams of her own inspired by God's love. This is a book I would want to give to every new baby to be read over and over again.

I was provided a free copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

I thought this book was wonderful! The theme of the book is great. It really has a very uplifting and positive message for young children. "God thinks about you. God was thinking about you before your debut." This would make a great bedtime story. It reinforces a positive attitude for your child and reminds them they are special and loved and cared about. The illustrations are beautiful and fun. I know any child would love this book. I highly recommend this for any child as a gift or even, just because. I received this book for free from Blogging for Books. A positive review was not required. All opinions are my own.

In When God Made You, the words dance out of your mouth, making it a perfect read-aloud book. The art is vivid and full of the movement and rhythm of the text. Turner and Catrow created a masterpiece together. This delightfully whimsical book belongs in every household. Every page is a beautiful reminder to ALL children that they are special to God. I received When God Made You and When God Made Light from the publisher, Waterbrook Multnomah/Penguin Random House, as a participant in the 5th Multicultural Children’s Book Day. This beautiful book, delightfully illustrated by David Catrow, features a young black girl in bright settings, as the words on the page remind her how much she is loved by God.

“Out of billions of faces from cultures, all races,
people God made, from all different places,
God knew your name. Your picture is framed.
God’s family without you would not be the same.”

This children’s book is for kids of all ages and all cultures because of its truths about human dignity: Everyone is special because they were created in God’s image with individually unique selves.

This delightful little children's book is simple in prose and beautifully illustrated. The author, Matthew Paul Turner, writes of the creativity of God and how he delights in the creation of every person. Much like Psalm 139:19, this book shares that every part of us was dreamed up by a loving God. It is a great way to teach kids that their uniqueness makes them special. The illustrations are works of art in themselves; each page is brightly colored and fanciful. If you are looking for a way to encourage and inspire little ones in their creativity, this book is a great option.

As a “faith-filled mother,” this book could not be a more perfect fit for my first book review on the blog! My son is finally at the age where he will actually sit and enjoy books, whether he wants to “read” them by himself, or let mommy and daddy read to him.

Starting at a young age, we desire to instill in our children that God is real, He loves us, and He has purpose for our lives. When God Made You by Matthew Paul Turner is a book that assists us as parents in teaching all of those truths.

Throughout the book, the reader is reminded that God want us to be who He created us to be. The sweet rhymes, the beautiful illustrations by David Catrow, and the bright colors are sure to engage children as they learn about how awesome our God is!

As a counselor that often works with children, I believe it is such a desperate need in our world that we build a solid foundation of truth for our children. This truth should surround the fact that we are each unique, strong, and above all, loved by our creator.

I highly recommend snagging this book for your kiddos, nieces/nephews, students, church, and friends!

It's whimsical, rhyming words fill the page and the beautiful illustration bring it to life. Our family loves to read. I love seeing my kids pick up a book, walk over to their grandparents, and ask them to read. We care about what our children read, so we appreciate book reviews that give us an idea of what to expect, especially when we're considering a new book we've never heard of before.

When God Made You is a BEAUTIFULLY illustrated little book that strongly evokes the limerick and upbeat style of Dr. Seuss's Oh the Places You'll Go. It tells children they are loved by God and encourages them to be true to themselves. There's nothing explicitly Christian about the book, but it comes from a Christian publisher, so it's kind of assumed. As far as children's books go, it's got great pacing, a lyrical quality, and a positive message. Four or five stars...

But...

The book itself did cause me raise an eyebrow a few times, but not enough for me to completely discount it altogether. There are a couple of references to God "dreaming."

"You, you, when God dreams about you,
God dreams about all that in you will be true."

God doesn't dream, either in the sense of sleeping (Ps. 121:4), or in the sense that he's optimistically ignorant about how future events will unfold (Is. 46:9-10).

My real concern lies with the author. His name sounded familiar to me, so I looked him up and found out why. Matthew Paul Turner is not, to put it lightly, orthodox. He was raised in a very fundamentalist church environment, and now he seems to be on a crusade to call all Christians to repentance for not being accepting of others, while constantly affirming to non-Christians that God loves them just the way they are. To the extent that Christians are insensitive or outright hostile to others, they should be called to repent. But telling non-believers that God loves them without a call to repentance and faith is not evangelism, and it's not orthodox, and I'm using that term in the broadest possible way. None of this comes out in the book, but knowing it now kind of makes me glad I didn't pony up the cash to add it to the bookshelf. And it doesn't make me feel guilty if the book quietly disappears from that bookshelf, either.

I received this book from the publisher for the purpose of providing this review.

Through playful, charming rhyme and vivid, fantastical illustrations, When God Made You inspires young readers to learn about their own special gifts and how they fit into God’s divine plan as they grow, explore, and begin to create for themselves.

Matthew Paul Turner, blogger, speaker, and author of Hear No Evil, The Coffeehouse Gospel, the What You Didn’t Learn from Your Parents About… series, and more says that he noticed that when he would read children's books that dealt on topics of faith, they did not seem as imaginative as secular books. So, he wanted to write one that would be more creative and appealing to children. Illustrator David Catrow is primarily an illustrator/author of children's books but has also been involved with several animated film/television projects.

When God Made You is probably more suitable for 6-8 year old kids since there is quite a bit of text that may not hold the attention of younger kids. I liked it, but did not love it. Perhaps the author and I simply have different speech patterns, but I did not always find the words flowing as smoothly as I expect with a rhyming book, and a couple seemed a bit forced. I got a bit bored with some of the repetition, but I am many years past the recommended reading level. The bright illustrations did demonstrate a sense of joy and fun as the child was assured that she was uniquely designed by God. For that age group the message is okay, so I can overlook the emphasis on the child being the center of attention rather than being created in the image of God to reflect Him. It's good, but not great.

What an all around beautiful book! The colors are striking in the illustrations, the message is wonderful for children who are raised in a godly home.

The first half of the book, some words are big for a 5yr old to read, but they are a great word choice for them to learn. Also, the second half of the book are short, one sentence phrases on each page so the parent can begin reading, then allow the child to take over. I love that aspect!

Not only is the text a beautifully written poem about a child's worth, but the illustration appears to tell a different story. Yet it still expresses a child's road to discovering their special talents and abilities. My kids love pointing out the different aspects of the illustration.

It is definitely a great addition to a child's library.

Written in a charming rhyming fashion. Author Matthew Turner stresses to the child being read this book that God finds them important. In fact, He finds them so important that He made….them. Just one of them. But one that the world needed. The child is encouraged to dream, to dance, to create. All wonderful things for a child! And the illustrations by David Catrow are incredible. So colorful and imaginative. This is a book sure to please the child in your life!

"So be you-fully you- a show-stopping revue. Live your life in full color, every tine, every hue." This is my favorite quote of the book When God Made You by Matthew Paul Turner. It is a children's book that emphasizes that God made us all different and special. And that we should embrace that fact and stop trying to be someone else.

Other then the powerful message that this book gives the artwork in the book is mind blowing. I found myself just sitting and browsing all the beautiful illustrations. A breath of fresh air, this children's book is something I feel proud to read to my three year old daughter. As a progressive Christian, I often am frustrated at the lack of children's Christian literature that is representative of the baseline truth we adhere to: that at our very core, we are beloved. This book reminds us of that truth and inspires readers of all ages of their inherent worth, identity and the responsibility to honor and pursue our unique abilities and talents. MPT does this in such a well crafted way. This book has such a lovely cadence that is not only delightful for my daughter to listen to, but also a joy for me to read. It is also important to note that the artistry of the illustrations are stunning! Whether it was intentional or not, it is refreshing that the main character is a little girl of color; which sadly is an anomaly in this whitewashed industry. How important and timely it is that we hear a message of hope and enduring love and the call to live into that from a black voice; something I definitely want my daughter to deeply value. We will proudly keep this book at the top of our bedtime reading stack for the foreseeable future and continue to look forward to reach for this as a teaching tool and a healing salve when we need reminding of our Belovedness and inherent goodness. This is a must buy!

My kids love the cadence of the words, I love the power of the words, and we all are entranced by how pretty every single page is. If I could, I would buy one for every family I know! Kids need to believe that God made them intentionally and with love, but so do grown-ups. Buy it so you can read it to yourself AND your kids! I received an early release complimentary copy but my words are my own.

I cannot thank Matthew enough for writing this book. As a dad to three daughters, I can't tell you how refreshing it is to have a book they can read that reinforces who they are. It tells them that every unique part of them was designed by God to be exactly how they are and that they should celebrate those quirks and unique traits. The artwork is beautiful, the writing is beautiful, and most importantly, the message is timely and so needed in our world right now. Thank you again, Matthew. This one will be in heavy rotation in our house for a long time.

This book. Get it now! First of all, the illustrations: kaleidoscopic colors with such energy. And the text: rhythmic and rhyming, affirming how our kids (and the rest of us) are all a marvelous creation made in God's image, how much the Father delights in them, and how the world is not the same without them.
"So be you - fully you - a show-stopping revue. Live your life in full color, every tint, every hue. Discover. Explore! Have faith but love more. And learn and relearn all that God made you for."
"A you who views others as sisters and brothers and lives by three words: love one another. A confident you, strong and brave too. You being you is God's dream coming true. 'Cause when God made you, all of Heaven was beaming. Over you, God was smiling and already dreaming."
How wonderful the world would be if we all lived this truth ?.

"When God Made You" by Paul Turner is a touching little children's hard cover book that helps reinforce the truth that God knows them, loves them, and is there for them. Filled with fun, bright and colorful illustrations by David Catrow, this makes for a great reading experience for little listeners.

I would highly recommend this book.

When God Made You by Matthew Paul Turner is a lovely children’s book that aspires children to learn who they are, and the purpose God created them for. It is a confident boost for little ones struggling with their identity. I give this book a 5 out of 5 because was a great read that kept my children intrigued, with rhyming words and vibrant illustrations and started made the conversation about God and understanding one’s purpose a bit easier with my oldest child. This book makes a great gift for a new parent or a child who loves to read and want to know how they fit in this big exciting world!

I love when books have a tender, gentle message about who children are and how they fit into the world. This book has such a sweet message about why we were created. It will make your child feel special and unique. As parents, this is exactly how we want our child to feel each and every day. It will be a blessing to you as you read it to your child.

The illustrations are wonderful and capture your little one's attention, which we all know is a must during book time!

I highly recommend to anyone!

When God Made You is a children's book (ages 3-8, according to the back cover) written by Matthew Paul Turner and illustrated by David Catrow. Through colorful and creative pictures paired with extravagant rhyming verse, When God Made You tells children that not only are they created exactly how God wanted them to be, but they also have a life set out before them to fulfill His destiny for that creation.

When God Made You reminds children that God knew them before they were even born and that God gave them the gifts, talents, and dreams that they'll hold so dear in this life.

While I enjoyed the colorful art portrayed in this story, the rhyme felt somewhat drawn out and left me unsure of an ideal audience for this book. There are a lot of big - and seldom used - words and expressions that might be challenging for younger readers to understand, while the repetition of some phrases may make I somewhat monotonous for older readers. The overall length might also take too long to hold the attention of younger readers.

I'm giving this book 3/5 stars. I'd recommend this book to kids that mostly focus on the pictures, younger audiences that enjoy reading just a couple random pages at a time, or older audiences that like larger concepts but still enjoy picture books.

This is one of the best children's books I have ever read! Although this is a children's book, the message is one that everyone needs to hear and remember. The illustrations are magical, and your child will spend hours pouring over them, trying to capture all the colors and extra pictures within the pictures.

When God Made You is the perfect combination of a book with a strong theme and beautiful illustrations, which is unusual these days. It is an instant classic, and will be a family favorite for generations to come.

I loved this book. It was fun to read with a little one and look at the great pictures. It had a great message and was fun to listen to a little one's interpretation of the book as they "read" it to me after I had read it to them. It is a great book that everyone should read and find someone to read it to.
I received a copy of the book from the publisher, but the review is my own.

Although there are lots of great picture books on the market, it hasn't been until fairly recently that many were written with a Christian theme. So, I was excited when offered an opportunity to review a brand new Christian picture book. When God Made You by Matthew Paul Turner is ultimately about how much God loves each child - just as He created them.

First, I have to admit I am crazy about children's books with beautiful art work. Honestly, the illustrations by David Catrow are so gorgeous, the book looks like one you would buy in a museum gift shop. The story itself is actually a poem with a few lines on each spread.

The story line is about how God makes each child unique. It tells of how God gives each child special gifts, talents and opportunities. What I loved is that it also alluded to the idea of starting to discover and develop those gifts now through every day play. It talks about character, godly dreams and learning about God. In fact, it's actually a rather spiritually deep lesson - especially considering it is a picture book.

Perhaps my favorite part of the book is that it mentions God having a dream for each child. When we talk about God's Plans, it really is His dream for our lives. When we follow God's plans we are able to live the rich, full life God wants for us. It won't be a perfect life because we live in a fallen world, but it will be a life that your children will be thankful they lived.

I know picture books can be rather pricey, but this one is actually rather reasonable for a beautiful, hard cover picture book. To me, it is one of those books that will get passed down from generation to generation.

This book was given to me for free in exchange for my honest review.

5 stars is not nearly enough to describe my LOVE for this book!!! It is by far the BEST childrens book I have ever read. The words are so moving and motivating and the illustration is breathtaking. I have to admit I shed a tear. I would recommend this book to kids from newborn to 18 years old. I truly hope the author is working on a follow up book(s)!!

With every single page, I was more and more in love with this story and illustrations. This is EXACTLY the book I have been looking for--a book that explains that each and every child is a gift from God. It's perfect. It's an uplifting, thoughtful, powerful story that I truly believe should be on every child's bookshelf. I bet that children who come to know Matthew Paul Turner's words will love them so much, they'll ask hear this story repeated over and over and over again. And honestly, that wouldn't be such a bad thing; this message of positivity and grace is worth putting on repeat for kids today.

Children are always trying to figure out where they fit in the big world. From a very young age, they are learning what they’re good at, how they can help, what their talents are, etc. We, as parents, need to encourage our children to be all that they can be for God. To do things for His glory. We need to make sure they know God made them just the way they are, and has plans to use them. They are unique, and no one is exactly like them.

I was honored to be a part of the launch team for this book! It was an amazing story that held my children’s interest. It has a powerful message; one that I believe all of us could learn from, not just children. The illustrations are just beautiful. I’ve read books similar to this one, but I just love the way this one is written. It is written in a rhyme, so even the youngest children will enjoy it. I love how Turner points out that even before children know who they are and what they can do, God knew who they were going to be and gave them the talents they have to use for Him. Grab it for the little ones in your life today! You won’t regret it.

I bought this book for my 18 month old. She loves it. We have to read it every day and she asks for it specifically by name. I love the fact that it is a book with a brown baby girl in it. I love the way it uplifts and speaks so directly to little girls. I love this book and will be getting it for all of the little girls in my life.

This children's book has a lovely message to share and the most gorgeous illustrations that captivate all 5 of my children, from ages 2-10. I've already read it a dozen times to the younger ones and the older ones recognize the illustrations from an illustrator of a series of books they liked when they were younger.
I love that I can share God's big love for my kids through a children's book!

Beautiful book. I had thought about one for my nephew but the character inside is the same little girl on the cover so although the story is totally appropriate for both girls and boys the pictures don't communicate that. My daughter will love it though!

When God Made You by Matthew Paul Turner, illustrated by David Catrow, and published by Waterbrook publishers, is a colorful book that aims to teach children why they were created.

As a conservative evangelical Christian, I expected this book to agree with the basic tenets of orthodox Christianity. As a result, I strongly disliked this book. This book is written to seem as though we as people were created on a whim and God didnt have any idea of what he was doing or why he was creating us. This book also gives too much credit to our abilities as humans and denies the sovereignty of God. While trying to explain the sovereignty of God the author takes too many creative liberties in trying to explain an important yet complex subject matter to children. This in conjunction with some grammatically suspect sentences makes the reading of this book quite confusing. On top of these issues with the text, the book talks about the glory of man that God instilled in us, an idea that flies in the face of Biblical teaching.

The art in this book is bright and colorful, however, the artwork is too busy and abstract to encourage the child to focus on the story. On top of this, the further into the book I read the less the pictures seemed to have to do with the text of the story. Therefore, it saddens me to say I cannot recommend this book to anyone.

This book was provided to me at no cost by waterbrook publishers via bloggingforbooks in return for my honest review.

This is possibly my favorite children's book EVER! And I am a lover of children's books in the dozens! Matthew Turner and his illustrator clearly hit this one out of the ballpark and I guarantee - you will love it AT ANY AGE!. If properly marketed, this adorable story will replace 'I Love You Forever' and 'Goodnight Moon' as everybody's FAVORITE shower gift for new parents! Don't waste another minute - I've already bought ten copies!

I was so surprised by When God Made You. I expected lovely illustrations and cute rhymes. However, I did not expect the theological depth that Matthew Paul Turner is able to bring to its pages in a way that children can so easily understand! This isn't a book just about why YOU are special and unique, but how every person is fearfully and wonderfully made in God's image. He encourages the reader of their true identity in Christ and to live in the full potential humans have as God's image bearers:

"'Cause when God made you, this much is true, the world got to meet who God already knew."

"You, you, when God sees you, God delights in what is and sees only what's true."

and my favorite...

"When you dance alone, spinning like a cyclone, being whoever, whatever, in a world all your own, God smiles and here's why- in the spark of your eye, a familiar reflection shines bright from inside. 'Cause when God made you and the world oohed and aahed, in heaven they called you an image of God."

How beautiful and true! We are made in His image!

I also love the diversity within the illustrations...people of different ages, sizes, and races, which emphasizes the author's message of every person being created in the image of God and displaying His glory through our diversity. The author gives action to this message by encouraging the reader to love others, dream God-sized dreams, and bring reconciliation among the world's people.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this to any parent or parent-to-be! I can't wait to read this with our little one and watch as he or she begins to understand what it means to live as an image bearer of our Creator.

This book is truly beautiful in so many ways. First, the art! The colors leap off the page at you. All of the illustrations, colors chosen, the paint-like feel, it all comes together to create the most beautiful and captivating display that had my attention as an adult so I can only imagine how captivating it would be for a child. It's also beautiful because of the story, the words, and the message. Lots of children's books can be sort of boring but not this one. While it, of course, talks about God and how much He loves us, it's not pushy or too religious at all in any way. This would be a great gift for families who are sort of spiritual and wouldn't be uncomfortable to give. I also think it would be a great gift for any artists, even adults, as a book to keep around to remind them of how important it is to use their gifts! It will also encourage children to use their talents and creativity. I can't recommend this book enough, definitely pick up a copy or two! Thank you to the team at Blogging For Books for providing me with a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
