Great book for even the seasoned runner to gain new tips and info on ultra running. Hal is very detailed in each subject described. Hal's writing style is easy to read with plenty of humor and real life examples thrown in.

As a lifelong runner who has gradually upped my mileage over the last few years and will run my first ultramarathon in a month I am excited to have this field guide. The style of writing is engaging, and the content is exactly what I need to help me prepare mentally and physically. The real-world tips are invaluable!

Very good, down to earth guide for the (current or future) Ultramarathoner. I've just completed my first 50k and I'm in training for my first 50 mile race - I am so glad I came across this book, as it has been invaluable. Written in an easy to read style - it manages to convey a lot of information without being dry. Highly recommended!
Ultra fans may recognize Koerner as the very likable competitor (and running store owner) from the excellent documentary film Unbreakable - usually available on the store as well.

This book was highly recommended by many in the trail running community. I gotta say it wasn't really my style. Came across with a lot of good info but was rather dry and boring. I prefer books with heart and humor about running and this book just seemed like a lot of trail knowledge. Nothing wrong with that but this book just didn't do it for me. We all are different

Got it last night read what i needed that pertained to the races i have done or will be doing. Id say basically the same as "RFP" BOOK. Some great insight into Hal and his experience. Just would've saved my money, his plan also Wasn't so different with the exception that he is one off few who believe in speed work. It was average..my opinion of course. He is still amazing athlete though i always appreciate tips and what not from a pro. This book just to much related to the relentless forward progress book to much.

A well-written and entertaining introductory guide by an experienced and successful competitive trail ultra runner. Although comprehensive across relevant subjects, the text is not particularly deep. This is expected in such a "Field Guide" volume but the author does provide a solid platform from which an interested reader will be encouraged to pursue additional knowledge and perspectives. In addition, many specific experiences, both good and bad, are discussed in a way that effectively communicates both the origin of "issues" and solutions or protocols to avoid them. Recommended reading for those considering, just beginning, or in the early stages of racing ultramarathons. Experienced ultramarathoners will also benefit from a reading as many race-proven, experienced-based tips are distributed throughout.

If you are planning to run your first ultra, this book is a great guide. It contains advice on everything from running on various surfaces, in inclement weather, what to eat, how to prepare, running technique and more. I bought this book to get ready for my sixth ultra and got a number of useful tips out of it.

Too Basic. No mention at all of specific product names for shoes, gels, gear, etc. The book was OK. I am an intermediate runner and thought the book was not detailed enough regarding specific gear...I really wanted to see specific companies/brands named and a comparison of them.

A good read to help you understand what to expect when you take the leap beyond the marathon distance. This book is focused more on the aspects of the ultra, rather than his personal journey. Will continue to refer to this book during future training cycles.

This is the best running instruction book I have read for awhile. Hal's voice is humorous, confident, and inviting--I felt like I was in a conversation with him. Highly recommended to any ultra runner, from beginner to elite.

Best ultrarunning book on the market-period. Well-written, concise, and full of useful information, by someone who has earned the cred by competing in AND winning the big-time races. If you want to improve your running-buy it.

I really enjoyed this book. I have only been running long distance for about a year and a half and am interested in trail and ultra running. This helped give me perspective on what I would encounter along the way. I'm very excited about the journey ahead and feel better prepared by Hal's advice and stories.
