Don't show this to your mother... or father... or girlfriend... or anyone who doesn't understand the refined delicacy that is Echii. This light novel is full of it and uses it well for whole of the comedy. Throw in a plot system that changes the way the world thinks (or at least 20 people), and you got yourself a great story. Can't wait for vol. 2

Its an interesting story. But the over sexualized 11 year old was a little off puting and completely ruined the story.
But if your a loli-con I would recommend it.
Other than that the book came in on time and un damage.

So I bought this thinking it was the manga, based on all of the reviews I read. It seems many people when they ordered this they DID receive the manga. However to my disappointment I did NOT receive the manga, I received the light novel version of No Game, No Life. I'm not sure if that's what I was supposed to get considering many of the reviewers seemed to receive the manga, but regardless I will not be buying anything else related to the series on the store again. The description really needs to be updated to state which you are receiving.
I did however give it two stars because I LOVE the story. The story itself is 4 stars, especially if you like gaming, but this light novel isn't what I wanted. I wanted the ecchi and pictures of the manga, not a novel.

The story centered around a brother and his younger stepsister known as Sora and Shiro. Both siblings became hikikomoris due to their intense agoraphobia caused by the traumatic death of their parents, and so they have both left school and spend most of their days playing online video games. While online, they eventually gain the reputation as a nigh-undefeated player known as Blank. Eventually, they receive a message from Tet, who challenges them both to a game of chess. The siblings prevail and in retaliation, Tet transports them into the world Disboard, where violence is taboo and the rules of games are enforced, and is home to several species aside from humanity. The setting of the story takes place within Elkia, which is the nation where humans reside and where our protagonists first begin their ordeal.

The premise that they must progress through different gaming scenarios only through their wit and intelligence is pretty refreshing. As violence is strictly prohibited, the plot forces Sora and Shiro to continue adapting new methods and strategies with each new game they participate in. This not only challenges them intellectually, but allows them to mature socially as they slowly learn to rely and trust other people during their time in Disboard aside from themselves, which is not an easy task, especially for Sora.

I really love this aspect of No Game no Life because the progression of the plot is interdependent with the characters' personal development. I honestly look forward to seeing how Sora and Shiro continue to mature as they venture through this world.

I got this from a borders bookstore but felt like i needed to review it while reading the series. It’s a great story that is told better in this book than the anime. While i am a huge fan of the series i can’t watch it the same way knowing all the details that were left out from the book(s). It’s a good series if you can get past the Lolicon stuff and sibling situation. First series i felt the need to read in order to finish the story and i truest don’t find joy in reading but this series makes me feel happy about it.

I love this series the stories are very interesting and the way they solve problems is awesome. That being said however there has been more than one occasion when volumes are SEVERLY DELAYED. One of them was delayed 3 times and was released almost a full year from the original date. So while it is worth reading be warned it could take a loooonnng time for the next to come out. Up to volume 6 has been released

Like the story and the writting, and despite my love of what Yen Press does, this is a VERY bad translation. Check out this article, where they sum up, with text example, how bad the translation is. Not a professional level at all (there are fan translations that are much better, for example). https://fantasticmemes.wordpress.com/2015/05/03/stay-away-from-the-no-game-no-life-english-novel/

Translation aside, theres a bit of ecchi, but overall, i love this story/characters

went for the rather unique hair colouring and world concept of games taking stead instead of wars, to resolve conflicts...etc. from the siblings to the world they find themselves in, after the initial intro, goes stale pretty fast.

gets kind of dull with the games described so far (read its going to be different once they start battling other nations with their games)

loan it from library or friend before committing.

This story is phenomenal. It takes something as rock-paper-scissors and completely immerses you. The reason why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is specifically because of the translation. There are countless grammar mistakes that make following what's happening very difficult. It seemed like the person who translated wasn't a native English speaker, and I had to read over several parts more than once just so I could understand what was going on.

That said, the story was fantastic, and I can't wait to get the next book.

I am writing this mainly to correct other people, but first let me say this is a great series. Yuu Kamina does great work and you should support all of his novels/manga's if you like this one.

The correction part is minor in that the Light novel came first, then the Manga, THEN the anime. The anime came out a full year after the manga. It just kinda irked me that people kept saying they made a manga based off of the anime. FALSE. They made a manga based of the light novel and an anime based off the light novel. They should not be compared to each other as they are different takes off of the same source material.

Review for light novel:

First thing you need to know is this book is absolutely not okay for kids. There is an actual story that in and of itself isn't inherently bad, but If you are not a pervert you are going to have to navigate past some "fanservice" (including revealing pictures, among other things, of which there are a few definite issues in volume 1 and more issues that are more severe on average in volume 2; one should note this includes the 11-year-old girl lead Shiro, who is rather perverted herself), crude humor, and sexual harassment scenes with Stephanie Dola, courtesy of the male lead Sora, to get to the really interesting and compelling story underneath.

That said, the intellectual challenges the siblings encounter in playing and winning games where they are completely disadvantaged in every way possible are really engaging, and while the siblings' characters aren't really what you would call admirable, their pain resulting from society's rejection of them and their inability to fit in, which they attempt to hide under their pride as unconquerable gamers, will resonate with those of you who, like myself (an "Aspie"), are misfits. It's not necessarily that we/they want to be like everyone else, and neither is it that we/they are necessarily proud of all of our/their asocial or antisocial traits. But there is a certain pain associated with being a human that seems to have been "born on the wrong planet", as well as a certain desire for a place of true belonging, and this series captures some of these senses in a unique way that is sometimes serious and sometimes lighthearted and pretty much all of the time freakin' epic. The gamer siblings don't magically become perfectly happy, well-rounded human beings. Instead, they stumble along trying to find their way, imperfect people being imperfect.

I should also mention that as other reviewers have mentioned, the translation is a little choppy and otherwise sort of awkward, and you may or may not get used to it depending on how you personally engage with books. If it weren't for these two things I would rate this book and series (as I've read so far) five stars in a heartbeat. It's a shame that this story had to fall pray to the phenomenon of ruining a great book/anime/etc. with unwanted inappropriate things that are completely unnecessary to advancing the story and characters.

All in all, the story concept is great and I love it but the translation isn't the best and there are some definite morality/crudeness/inappropriateness/approaching-pornographic/whatever-you-want-to-call-it issues with some of the written scenes and some of the pictorial images in this series. I turned to the light novels after I started running into more and more of this stuff in the anime, hoping that it would be easier to skip parts in novel format, but this doesn't completely get rid of all the issues. It's not really possible to completely skip everything as one must first figure out what parts need to be skipped. I'm hoping I can do I good enough job where I can in good conscious finish the series, but I don't know if this will be possible and I might just have to stop partway. If you are really concerned about this kind of thing, I would recommend not picking this up to begin with. Or if you have a friend who actually likes this sort of thing and has a copies of the books in the series, see if you can't pay them to get a big black marker and some scissors for the inappropriate color inserts and edit/censor the books for you and give them to you. I would pay double or triple if only I could get pre-edited copies...

The book introduces well the characters, and their point of view of life as a game. The book is like the anime and like the manga clearly shows in the front of the book, in the corner it should be for people old enough like to understand difficult mind tricks and the theory of mind and to see one X rate stuff (panty shots etc). But is a good story.

Idea of siblings going to a game world sounded good, but turned out to be poorly written junk full of sick pervert scenes. Couldn't read much of it, just too bad. Don't waste your time on this perverted garbage.

Novel first then printed? I have a feeling is was written by a twelve year old by the grammar level. Go read "Is it wrong to pick up girls in a dungeon? " it dose the whole fantasy JRPG so much better then this.
