It took way too long for her to get to the point of the book. I feel like most of it was written in the passive voice and, while I liked the ending, it took forever to get there and I felt like I was just dragged through the book. A lot of it could have been taken out, and the remainder spiced up, to make it a better read.

I had high hopes for the book after reading the first 2 reviews rated 5 stars. Maybe those were done by the publisher.
This book is so slow it hurt. 20 pages will go by with repetitive thoughts by the main character; over and over and over. I ended up skipping pages knowing I didn't miss anything just to finish it. Nothing happens but every once in a while. The storyline could be summed up in less than 50 pages.

Yay! I am soo excited that Kiera's book is finally out! She really deserves everything! I have read the first two chapters of this book (that can be found on her website) and it's AMAZING! I strongly suggest that everyone buy this book! Tell your friends and let's get Kiera's book in the top 100 ranked!!!

Super cliche, predictable and boring. The writing is terrible and superficial; it doesn't make you understand what the characters are feeling. Take my advice: DO NOT BUY IT. Read the book series called The Selection, it's highly superior to this non-sense.

I found this book really good....I wouldn't call it absolutely AMAZING and I wouldn't call it a bad or boring book. Some parts were better than others. I loved lots of parts in it but I wouldn't say that its my favorite book. I am so glad that I read it though and I look forward to more of Kiera Cass's work!

I have to admit, I was intrigued by the title. The Odyssey is one of my favorite stories, so when I saw the word siren I knew I had to read this novel.
Without giving away any spoilers, one thing I liked about the book was the love story. I am a hopeless romantic and fall for even the sappiest of love stories every time. Is it a realistic romance? No. But how many YA fantasy novels have realistic relationships? I think that's part of why people enjoy them so much. Cass does a good job of placing you inside the head of Kahlen, the protagonist. The character development is thorough, and as a reader, I began to think and feel like Kahlen.
Here is my one warning: the story moves slowly. It begins slow, picks up pace about half way through for a few chapters, slows down again, and then ends on a high note. With some patience it is worth it.
The relationships between the characters is what really keeps this novel rolling. If you're looking for a non-stop, action-packed book, this isn't the one for you. If you are looking for a book that focuses on the importance of relationships, sacrifices, and love for yourself and others, then I recommend The Siren.

The only reason this book is getting a bad rating is because I don't understand why the kindle edition is over a dollar more then a hard back book. I thought kindle was saving paper and what not but apparently not.

As a fan of YA books, as well as fantasy books, I found this book to be one of the more boring fantasy books I've (attempted to) read. There was nothing special about the main character, or her love interest. I couldn't find anything that would make me want to continue reading this book after 20 pages in, I really tried (I spent $18 so I felt obligated). However, not even the pretty cover could enthrall me.
My first problem was finding a thread to connect me to the main character, Kahlen. It was hard to do so since reading this book through her purview was akin to staring at rocks. I admit she did seem nice, a little dopey and passive though in that she was totally okay with The Ocean killing her entire family. Like "okay, Mother Ocean, I guess it's totally chill you violently drowned my family. Let's hang out for the next 100 years and like be immortally bonded by the death of a thousand souls. I'm like okay with that." Secondly, If I had spent 80 years as a Murderous Siren, I would have at least traveled the world, volunteered my time to those in need, learned languages. What did Kahlen do? She put together a scrapbook of all the people she killed. Haha. Wait. What?
Overall, I give this book a 1 seashell out of 10.

I absolutely loved the first chapter but was then surprised when it took a modern twist. I wasn’t expecting that approach which left me slightly disappointed. After a few chapters, I almost stopped reading it, thinking it wasn’t going to be for me. The only thing that kept me reading is that a friend had highly recommended it as one of her favorite stories. I am so glad that I kept reading because once I got over the initial shock and disappointment of its direction, I found myself loving it and devouring it. The romance was absolutely adorable and it felt so real. It reminded me of dating my husband; the awkwardness, the constant thoughts about him, the random text messages that leave a goofy smile on your face that you can’t seem to get rid of. It was all so endearing and I absolutely loved it! I would think the story would go one way, and then it completely surprised me. It was just an absolutely beautiful story that leaves you with a warm feeling, a happy sigh, and a smile that makes you want to give the book a big hug and snuggle up to it when it’s all said and done.

I have a love/hate relationship with Kiera Cass. I loved her initial Selection trilogy, but I hated The Heir and never quite understood why there was ever a need for it to exist. I added The Siren to my TBR list way back before I ever read The Heir, when I was still excited about Kiera's books. Back when it had its original cover.
Even after really not liking The Heir, when I saw that The Siren was being re-released with an edit and a new cover, I decided to give it a try. Although I didn't go in with high expectations, I did expect to enjoy it since it was a departure from The Selection series.
The Siren begins with Kahlen's story before she became a siren. It's brief and doesn't give a huge amount of detail, although it's enough to explain how she became a mythical creature. Very quickly, we skip ahead 80 years and Kahlen is still a teenager in every way, which seems a little weird. It seems to me that if a person lives for almost 100 years, they should have a different level of maturity than your standard teenager, but okay... I don't really have much to say about Kahlen because, despite reading over 300 pages of her story, I don't feel like I learned anything about her. The entire story is literally about Kahlen moping and being depressed over the tragedy that is her life and her lost "soulmate," which brings me to Akinli.
Again, I don't feel like I learned enough about Akinli to make any kind of statement about his character. Kahlen repeatedly tells the reader what an incredible, perfect person he is, but how do I know this? All I came away from The Siren knowing about this character is that he's from Maine, likes cake, and knows how to dance. I don't feel like I have any reason to dislike Akinli, but I certainly don't know enough about him to say that I like him.
Let's jump right into the "romance" shall we? Allow me break this relationship down for you. Kahlen and Akinli meet twice, have one date, don't see each other for several months, spend less than 24 hours together, and are apparently soulmates.
Kahlen spends the entire book pining over a guy she has seen for less than 48 hours total. Less than 48 hours of 100 years, and that is completely ridiculous and unforgivable. Not only was there some pretty intense insta-love between the two love interests, but Akinli's entire family apparently instantly loves Kahlen too because... I have no idea why.
If I could sum up The Siren in one word it would be "incomplete." Reading this book, it is totally obvious that it was her first and that it needed a lot more work. Better yet, it should have been left alone. Nothing in The Siren seemed completely fleshed out. There was literally no history given on the sirens or how they came to be. The Ocean was vague and I didn't quite understand why She needed human sacrifices. The bit about the memories disappearing when a girl became a siren didn't make much sense because it only seemed to happen part of the time and the Ocean's rules seemed pointless since it seemed to be so easy to get around them.
In case I haven't made it clear, this book is NOT a book about sirens. The siren angle was secondary to the "romance" between Kahlen and Akinli. The fact that Kahlen was a siren only served as a way to keep the two apart so that they could pine over each other and almost die of heartbreak. (Excuse me while I go throw up.)
I didn't completely hate The Siren. There were a couple things I actually enjoyed, mainly Kahlen's sisters, but overall I was so disappointed by The Siren. I was really looking forward to another non-Selection book by Kiera Cass and truly hoped that I she would redeem herself in my eyes, but I have to report that was, sadly, not the case.

I wanted to like this book. I did. But it took me over a month to read and that’s not a good sign. The Siren was a complete and utter snoozefest. Shortly through reading about 50 pages of this book, I texted my friend telling her it read like it was Cass’ first book. I want to make it clear, there is nothing wrong with that. There are many debut books I adore, but The Siren was not one of them. I am aware of the fact that this version is completely different than the original book she wrote, but that actually worries me more.
The Siren is the story of Kahlen and her instalove boyfriend, Akinli and here’s the thing: the instalove does not work. If it was a Disney movie, the instalove would have worked. But Cass never made their love work for me, to the point I thought it was pulling the story down. I would have much preferred a story about Kahlen finding herself because that I could have seen working.
What also didn’t work was Her. Her was too much like God for my liking and the parallel was not working for my liking and made me extremely uncomfortable. What also made me uncomfortable was how “perfect” Akinli was. There seemed to be no substance to him and I was not a fan of that. Give me a reason to root for you! Too often parts of The Siren were idealized and were not working for me.
While I was looking forward to reading a light, fluffy, read. I was highly disappointed and let down that it was anything but that.

I expected this book to be more like the other mermaid type books I've read. It was pretty much nothing like them at all. First of all, these girls do not magically sprout fins and live in the ocean. This story is full of Siren lore that doesn't really connect to mermaids at all. These girls are saved by the Ocean and then live to serve Her.
Kahlen is a very intriguing character. I enjoyed how deeply she felt things and cared for people and her sisters even after becoming a siren. I could feel the turmoil she faced after meeting Akinli and trying to stay true to what she was and serve her time as a siren. I also really liked Aisling and I wish we had gotten a little bit more of her in the story, but what we got was good. I think she was probably the most similar to Kahlen out of the group of girls we met. Akinli was also a wonderful character. I like that the reason Kahlen connects with him so much is because he sees her for more than her beauty, he looks deeper than that. There are far too few people like that in the world.
I guessed the cause of the struggle in this book totally wrong. When we find out what's happening to Kahlen I was honestly shocked. I like when a book can surprise me like that. And I like the way the author took things even better than my presumptions. I love the ending to this book so much, I love seeing forgiveness and hope and a chance to move forward. There's not much more that a person can ask for.
If you enjoy mermaid books, you will probably still like this book, but don't expect glimmering tails and seashell bras. If you're fascinated with the lore of Sirens you will definitely love this book. And if you like paranormal romance, you should give it a read as well.

Wow. I did not expect this. The Siren is so different from any of Kiera Cass’s Selection novels. I went into this novel expecting to end up with something similar to her previous novels. I thought it was going to be a love story between a prince and a siren. I was completely wrong. (Remember I go into novels not having read or having forgotten the synopsis.)
For some reason that I can’t seem to understand, a lot of readers have issues with Kiera Cass and her Selection series. I, however, have enjoyed all of her novels so far, including this one.
The characters in this novel were amazing. I loved Cass’s version of sirens. For some reason I was picturing mermaids when I first purchased this novel. Thank you, Hollywood. I was only slightly disappointed that there were no gorgeous tails attached to the beautiful sirens. Each siren is unique in their personality. No girl is the same. Kahlen is quiet and keeps to herself, Elizabeth is rebellious, Miaka is artistic, and the newest siren, Padma, has a lot of anger and rage built up due to her past. And then there’s Akinli. Kahlen doesn’t expect to ever fall in love, but that’s what happens when the two of them meet one afternoon. Kahlen tries hard to ignore her feelings for him, but in the end it just might be both of their downfall.
Cass creates a wonderful story of sisterhood, finding love, and accepting who you are.

This book was so interesting! I really, really enjoyed it! Kiera Cass is one of my favorite authors and has an incredible way of writing that really puts you right in the middle of the story! The book is so pretty in person and in pictures, but the matte cover makes it look really cool in person! Also, wow, I thought the way Cass wrote the Ocean’s voice and personality was so interesting. I have never read a book before where the ocean was a character. It was surprising, but in a very great way. The Ocean had a very strong presence in the book, but also was shown to have some limitations and weaknesses. I liked how the word Ocean was capitalized throughout the whole book and all the Ocean’s lines were in itallics. It really set the ocean apart as being another being compared to the other characters. I think the Ocean can be interpretted as representing many different things in life. I think the way Cass wrote this piece of the story was great because people can interpret it differently based on their own personal beliefs in life.Overall, highly recommend if you're looking for a good book to read this summer!

I picked up this book as I had read all the books in the Selection series and loved them and the author. This book is nothing at all like those other books and is a very different stand alone book. It's well written and a unique story. This was originally a self published novel and this is an official redone release version.
Our existence is based on the ocean and feeding the ocean keeps us alive. Do boats sinking and taking lives sometimes not make sense? In this book we learn that the ocean must take the lives of some to save the lives of many. Through this the Sirens are born. Their voices are lovely but if you hear them you will go run to water and drown. Kahlen didn't want to die, so the ocean saved her and has sentenced her to 80 years of being a Siren if she so chooses.
Fast forward to modern day and that is where the book really picks up. A group of girls, Sirens, are living in a world where they can't speak a word to human ears without terrible consequences. They do their best to try to acclimate and pretending to be deaf or mute.
Life gets complicated when boys get involved. Kahlen vowed to never get involved on any level with a human but one boy works his way into her life and she does her best to keep her feelings for this boy a secret from the ocean. Nothing can ever be kept from the ocean forever though.
Your heartstrings will be pulled in all kinds of directions as you read this book. There is a mystery that arises that the Sirens work to resolve. At points I was almost brought to tears not knowing what would happen in the end. This is a must read if you like Kiera Cass, but just be mindful that this is not set in the same kind of world as the selection but a different world all it's own.

Since I read the selection books, I decided to read another by the author. I went into this book blind, completely unaware of the plot.
After meeting Kahlen and her turning into a siren, I was confused by the 80 year jump. I thought we'd learn more about her prior sisters, but we don't.
There are questions I have about Ocean and how this even began. What human life taking could even do for Her. It seemed disasters would feed her too, but they happen too infrequently thus the need for sirens.
Regardless, it was still a beautifully woven story. It makes me want to read more takes on sirens so I hope it will inspire others to be creative with it.
My onmy issue is the end. And epilogue. Feels rushed and I would have liked a bit more closure to the story.

Kahlen was meant to die eighty years ago but instead she was bound to the ocean to serve as a Siren luring unsuspecting humans to their death for a hundred years with the sound of her voice. Kahlen and her sisters move from city to city to hide what they are while living among the humans but when needed they return to the sea to sing.
When Kahlen meets Akinli he treats her differently than any human ever has speaking to her even though she can't talk with him. She quickly finds herself falling in love with Akinli but with another twenty years on her contract with the ocean she finds herself struggling with who she is and what part she plays in so many deaths over the years.
The Siren is a love story with a bit of a twist with the main character being a Siren. Serving the ocean for a hundred years Kahlen has really only had her other Siren sisters in her life but after so much time she begins to see what she's missing on land.
The overall story here was interesting enough to maintain my attention but there definitely were some slower parts throughout the book. There really wasn't anything you wouldn't expect to happen though in a romance read or anything amazingly different with what's known of a Siren.
Overall I'd say 3.5 stars for this book, a bit slow moving but not too bad a fantasy romance.

Didn't even think to purchase: Redundancy in book synopsis is your first clue that author does not know how to write and does not have a decent editor. EX: "...by luring humans to watery graves with her voice, which is deadly to any human who hears it. " I think, I got it the first time that Ocean, voice, graves were a deadly combination. Even if the story line is fabulous; I will not buy books from an author who cannot be bothered to even edit the first impression of a book. I have learned from experience, that f the summary is poorly written, the entire book will be painful to read. I do not like to guess at what the author intended to say. If this had been a new author (first 2-3 books), I would not have taken the time to comment; however, this individual obviously is trying to pursue a writing career and needs help with her story telling. Get a good editor.

*~.PROS.~*
Kiera’s writing is ever always enticing, no matter how you feel towards her protagonists or how much the story is ‘getting nowhere’ in your head. Kiera is a true siren of words, getting herself into your consciousness so fast that, when you see, you are talking about her – good or bad, it doesn’t matter. She already has you, haha! But I did like the fresh intake on mermaids =)
Ps: the new released edition with this pretty cover that I featured above was taken in Brazil ❤

Why bother naming characters with words that I can’t even phantom how to pronounce, Kiera? Seriously, this game is getting boring, please consult a popular baby names book or something before your next novel. Thank you. Also, I didn’t care for Kahlen or for the end at all =(
*~.RECOMMENDED FOR.~*
Fans of mermaids, urban fantasy, YA books and quick reads ❤
Kiera’s writing is ever always enticing, no matter how you feel towards her protagonists or how much the story is ‘getting nowhere’ in your head. Kiera is a true siren of words, getting herself into your consciousness so fast that, when you see, you are talking about her – good or bad, it doesn’t matter. She already has you, haha! But I did like the fresh intake on mermaids =)

I was sucked into this spellbinding story from the first page, but expected so much more from this story than I got.
Captured by the plot of this story, I fell in love with the sisterhood the sirens share, and Kahlen, the protagonist, as well as the Ocean herself. I don’t care much for the side character, Akinli, as a character on his own, but appreciate the conflict he creates for the main character.
I definitely wanted more from the shipwrecked scenes. More detail, horror, sensory. Sensory details that would have made me sympathize with Kahlen and the other sirens, or side with the Ocean. I wanted to feel her emotions more–not just the teenage romance, but her love and hate of the Ocean herself.
This book has a lot of potential, but there were so many questions I had left about the sirens and ocean history. Instead of the mopy romance, I wanted more from the fantasy, magical side of the story.
That being said, it was a sweet, fast paced read. Definitely got me in a magical mermaid mood while I was lounging at the beach. My copy of this book is full of salt water and sand.
You can see my reviews on Goodreads and my site linked in my bio

The description of this book was what originally made me want to read it. The cover was eh for me, especially for Kiera Cass -- a girl in a fluffy dress is nothing unusual. It's not unusual for the genre in general either. The plot of the book was what really brought this book down in stars for me, along with the voice. In the end, I felt that there was nothing really special about this book. The writing was blah, and it didn't feel like it had any character to it that made me think it was uniquely Keira Cass. Granted, this is my first novel I've read by her, but there was nothing that made me think wow, she can really weave a unique story. This brings me back to the story. I didn't feel connected at all, and there was insta-love beyond any sort of believability. It was a love at first sight that's ground shifting, or shall I say ocean shifting. The only thing I felt was particularly strong was the personification of the ocean. It was interesting, but not to the point where I felt it was anything amazing. The ocean was a possessive toddler at best. The last fifty or so pages are what saved the book for me, but it was so burdened by the mediocre beginning that it never evened out. For me this novel fell flat.

To set this up I will say that I am a happily married mother not even remotely close to being a teenager anymore BUT I was introduced to this book by a gorgeous and popular teenage girl who has amazing taste in books!
I initially began reading Kiera Cass' Selection series (which I absolutely LOVED). My niece (as described above) had recommended them to me and she has fantastic taste in books so I indulged. When she told me that I had to read The Siren, I was a bit more hesitant. While the Selection premise was interesting to me, a teenage love story about a siren and a boy made me cringe but since I adore my niece, I decided to read it, and I am SO GLAD I did!
As always, Cass' characters are flawlessly flawed and real. She really knows how to make you fall in love with the characters and feel what they're feeling. The premise was an interesting one about sirens and how they serve the Ocean as their god of sorts by singing and feeding it the lost souls. The love story was so real and heart wrenching and un-gooey that I couldn't help but fall in love myself.
Seriously, this book is so much more than the tagline on the cover "A girl with a secret. The boy of her dreams. An Ocean between them." It's a book you will not regret picking up!

I just finished the audiobook...outstanding. now that I see the spellings of the names in print I am glad I had an audiobook, I would have never known how to pronounce them... truly so touching. I felt the pain and elation, the love, the hate.. very well executed concept, characters were very lovable, and relatable... when punishments are handed out, you feel the pain, and the unjustice... clean, but because of the anxiety a younger child might feel when death scenes described, I would not recommend for anyone who is ubder 15 unless they are emotionally mature.

The Siren By Kiera Cass ? 4.5/5 ⭐️'s .
"Kahlen is a Siren, bound to serve the Ocean by luring humans to watery graves with her voice, which is deadly to any human who hears it. Akinli is human—a kind, handsome boy who's everything Kahlen ever dreamed of. Falling in love puts them both in danger . . . but Kahlen can't bear to stay away. Will she risk everything to follow her heart?"
So this story is about Sirens, I didn't know what Sirens are before I started this book but this book explains it so well although at the beginning I kept on imagining them as mermaids and they're similar in some way but the more you know about them the more you realize they don't. It's a tempting dreadful bound so this book is emotional, specially after Khalen fell in love with a guy. The groundwork is laid out so well but I kept on having questions ? I really enjoyed reading it and it's one of those "You have to finish me in one setting" books because the chapters are divided so well and the book is exciting ♥️.
⚠️ Spoiler Alert ⚠️ So I really loved the concept of this story specially since I love Greek mythology and I loved the ocean. The ocean is the most complex thing in this book, you can't hate her and you can't love her and her bound with the girls is just amazing to read about. The love story between Kahlen and Akinli is cute and sweet but I couldn't feel the depth of it, I felt like Kahlen didn't really explain what she sees in Akinli that made him the "one". What if another guy came in and did what he did will he also be the "one"? Although I really love Akinli and his man bun ? The sisterhood is also beautiful, the way they take care of each other and look out for one another is heartwarming ?

4.5--I really, really enjoyed this book! Paranormal/mythical genres aren't my usual go-to, but I saw that cover (the new edition) at the store and since Kiera Cass wrote it, I knew I had to give it a try.
I have to say my heart broke for the sirens...especially Kahlen. To be trapped for a century and serve the ocean in the way they had to, had to be such a taxing, emotionally draining life. But Kahlen was an ever-faithful servant, even though she was haunted by all the death they had caused.
Then she meets Akinli. I've read paranormals before that I enjoyed, but the added element of Kahlen not being able to speak without killing Akinli was different. His attempts right away at communicating with her (i.e.: white board off his dorm room door), were so sweet. I just loved him, and them together. He made her feel human, like he saw her...the real her, like he wasn't just transfixed by her beauty.
From there, the rest of the story kept me glued to the book, barely unable to put it down for a second. I had no idea how they were feasibly going to end up with a HEA, but I enjoyed the ride...and the end. My heart broke for all of them as they were trying to find a solution...Kahlen, the sisters, Akinli...and even the Ocean.
My only beef was that I wish there had been a little more to the epilogue. But at least there was one!
I thoroughly enjoyed this one and would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys stories with a paranormal/mythical twist. And I think this would make a great movie! Once again, well done, Ms. Cass!

Kahlen is a siren indebted to the Ocean. She and her sisters learn to cope with the rules and obligations that come with their particular profession.
Kiera Cass does a lovely job of creating likeable characters and gives the reader an unexpected take on the world and duties of a siren. It makes for a fun read with a sweet love story thrown in to boot. It is a story she originally wrote in her beginning years as a writer though. Luckily I knew this ahead of time, so I wasn't expecting the same sort of writing she has shown in the Selection series. It lacks some of the depth of the dystopian society Cass writes about in the Selection, but by thinking of them as separate entities this book was still very enjoyable.
The book is a light and fun read while still taking some serious tones when the situation calls for it.The best part of this book is learning about the sirens and their world. That means there's not a lot I can tell about it without ruining the experience of the book.
Rating
I'd give this book a 3 out of 5. While I probably won't read it again, this was a unique take on the life of a siren and was definitely worth the one time read.

The Siren was the first book written by Kiera Cass, author of The Selection series. It was originally self-published, but after the author’s success, was acquired by HarperTeen, re-edited and re-released in January 2016.
I totally devoured this book. I loved every word of it. Light yet deep, haunting but addicting and seriously page-turning. The story follows a girl named Kahlen who is spared during a shipwreck, in exchange for a 100-year sentence to serve the Ocean as a murderous siren. Kahlen struggles to come to terms with all the innocent lives she must claim to feed the Ocean. All she wants is to fall in love and get married someday, after her awful sentence is over, yet she meets the boy of her dreams too soon. Charming college student Akinli is joy-giving and full of life, but the mysterious Kahlen brings only death with the sound of her voice. While she cannot speak to Akinli for this reason, their souls still connect in an unbreakable bond.
But this book is far, far more than a love story. It’s a unique mythology unlike any mermaid book I’ve yet read (indeed, the sirens don’t have fish tails) with careful, gentle but not over-the-top world-building. Kahlen’s siren “sisters” make this more a story of true friendship, of sisterhood. Even the spirit of the loving but frightfully possessive Ocean is a fascinating character that leaves the reader aching for more backstory. A melancholy note rings throughout the course of the novel, adding to its poignancy.
The only thing I wondered about was why the main character had such a modern name like “Kahlen” when she was supposed to have been originally born sometime between the 1920s and 50s. Also, since the plot of the book and Kahlen’s fate was so entwined with Akinli, I’d have liked to see more scenes with him. Overall, a great read and I couldn’t put down my Kindle until I was finished. If urban fantasy, chick lit, beach reads, chaste romances, mythology, mermaids or YA appeal to you, then this is the book for you.

You never know how strong true love is until you've met your soul mate. Kahlen, a beautiful Siren cursed to serve the Ocean, finds love where words are not allowed and relationships are forbidden. She knows living in his world would definitely kill him. What she didn't know was he consequence of living without him.
Kiera Cass, author of the Selection Series, has a way of bringing her readers into the story by allowing us to feel the wide range of emotions from the character. We cry with them, endure their sorrow and sometimes even rejoice at the little accomplishments along the way. Siren is a novel that allows us to see love in a mythical fantasy.

Not nearly as good as The Selection series. The romance between A & K feels too manufactured & lacks depth. I feel like the story would have worked better if A was more 3D (more interaction with his character - maybe vignettes of him & his family from his perspective, or he writes about his life & Kahlen in a blog or something... Without the input from A & without knowing his feelings earlier on, it kind of paints Kahlen as the typical "crazy," love-sick girl.) I also think too much time was spent describing all of the places the girls moved around to & how depressed Kahlen was all of the time; it made the book drag a tad. There were more ways to flesh out the book - what's it like underwater? What sorts of cool ruins, etc. do the girls stumble across? How do the girls pay their bills/get money - gold coins & stuff lost at sea? Not a bad YA novel by any means, but I expected better from Cass because I really love her other books & I hold her to a higher standard.

I've been waiting to read The Siren ever since Kiera announced she was going to republish it. In fact, I'd looked into it even before she was going to republish it, but it wasn't available.
I settled down into jury duty to read this book, got to page three, and got called onto a jury selection. Fun. Got out, and immediately started reading it again, and wasn't able to put it down. I finished it in about 5 hours. It was good, but I definitely wouldn't say it was as good as her Selection series. You could tell it was her first work, even republished, and that's okay. I read this book knowing that it was her first work that she released out into the world. That said, there were a lot of things I picked up on as a writer myself, and as a hyper aware reader. She is repetitive in this book. She doesn't tie up some loose ends in the story (still waiting to find out who the extra boy was in the picture in Akinli's dorm room). Typical things that are tough to keep a hold of when you are writing a book yourself.
All of that out of the way, the premise of the story is interesting. The Ocean needs to be fed, in turn, everything lives because of the ocean, but that doesn't make any difference to Kahlen, who has to sing in order to feed the Ocean, as her duty as a siren. I especially liked how she capitalized anything the ocean was called, whether it was "Her, or Your", I thought it was interesting that she treated the ocean as a God-like creature to these girls.
I'm also happy that the book didn't take any of the turns that I thought it was going to. There were several ways she could have taken the book, and the ending was none of those things. I was very satisfied with the ending, and was given closure, which is rare because I very rarely read stand alone books.
For someone who enjoys reading and doesn't want to think too much or can suspend disbelief that someone could fall in love so fast, this was a fun read. I wouldn't say that it is Kiera's best work, and I wouldn't go so far as to say I loved it, but it was a good read from my favorite author, and it was really nice to read something that wasn't based in the world of the Selection series, to see how Kiera wrote other things. Will definitely always keep a look out for her work!

The Siren by Kiera Cass
???????☠
I am a fan of Kiera Cass. I enjoyed the Selection series, and I enjoyed this novel too. I think she is quirky and fun and unique. This story’s mythology about the creation of sirens and why they must sacrifice human’s lives is fascinating, and I enjoyed the interaction with the numerous sirens and the Ocean. The god-to-semi-human relationships were interesting, energized, and, at times, bizarre and uncomfortable (but in a good way). That being said, the romance didn’t do that much for me. I thought it was rather on the insta-love side, and it took away from the storyline of these awesome girls forced to live out this terrible but beautiful existence. The first half worked, but it was rather the second half that I felt the melodramatics really slowed things down and drowned out the other sections. Ex. Kahlen’s voice becomes unbearably depressing for a large portion of the book, and while it makes sense, I missed the determined, curious side of her. But—back to the positives: I loved the girls. I thought it was wicked to watch a group of girls work as a supernatural force with no other help around them. I thought it was cool that they were conflicted and imperfect. I enjoyed their different but complimentary personalities, especially in regards to the parts of the world and the era they were from. I loved how they all came together. And I squealed at the end in delight, because it was a very poetic ending I enjoyed immensely. Well worth the read.

Recommended to: Cass fans, readers of mythology—mermaids, sirens, and ocean creatures/gods in general—and light romance readers. Protagonist’s voice centers on depression, but there is cake!
Favorite Quote: I wish I could explain to her how a full life cut short was better than an empty life that dragged on.

Kahlen didn't want to drown the same night as her family. She begged to live, but it cost her one-hundred years as a siren, killing and taking the lives of innocents to feed Her, the Ocean. With her sisters, the others cursed to be sirens, she's trying to live out those days until she can be freed and live a normal life again. She's eighty years into her sentence when things change. Kahlen meets Akinli. He's kind and makes her feel something again. But she's forbidden to speak to him or be with him. The Ocean doesn't save mothers or wives for a reason. Kahlen suddenly realizes that twenty more years will be too many and she'll miss the thing she's wanted all of her life. Love.
At first, I found the book a little interested but it was pretty slow. I didn't really connect with Kahlen at all and she felt stilted in a way. But as the story progressed, I felt more invested in her story and I really wanted the best for her. The romance aspect was a bit cheesy, but it was still sweet. Overall, it was a sweet YA romance and I enjoyed it.

But as the story progressed, I felt more invested in her story and I really wanted the best for her. The romance aspect was a bit cheesy, but it was still sweet. Overall, it was a sweet YA romance and I enjoyed it.

Meh. I loved the Selection books. I ripped through them in a matter of days and late nights. This was “ok.” It felt like The Little Mermaid crossed with ET. Girl from ocean can’t talk. Falls in love. Bodies become in sync and start dying apart. ET phone home on your conch shell? I also kept waiting for the author to tell us why she couldn’t just....not go back to the ocean? She never explained why or what would happen if Kahlen just didn’t go back. Yeah there’s water in her or something but what happens if you stay away? If you stay on dry land? Does the water choke you? Are you pulled into the water? I was just kind of like um ok girl move to Colorado?

The basic story line is super good but I feel a really huge plot hole is why The Ocean needed to drown people? Cass never explained why She needed to “feed” on humans and that bothered me. Which that plot hole leads to an even bigger question...WHAT IS THE POINT THEN OF A SIREN’S EXISTENCE? Other plot holes like “Why would the main character love the Ocean like a mother if She was making her do such an evil act that she dearly didn’t want to do?” As other reviewers said: Stockholm Syndrome! The Ocean should be an evil step mother not a nurturing but secretly Dexter of a psychopath with justifications of lost souls for unexplained reasons. And the ending? The reason behind Kahlen’s sickness peeved me off. The story line could have been better explained but then again she did leave it on a note where she could write a second book. If she wrote a continuation I would definitely give it a shot to redeem itself. If she leaves it by itself to stand on its own it’s not worth the read. It at least stands a chance with a continuation book.

I actually have read both versions of this story, the one she released in 2009 and the rerelease in 2016. I read the 2009 version first and fell in love with the story and the characters. I enjoyed the rewritten edition, especially the added mystery towards the end of the story, but I preferred the original release. The development of the story was so much deeper and I connected to the characters much more. I felt as if readers had only met Akinli a few times and we were supposed to feel a deep connection between him and Kahlen in the end. I didn't feel that. I missed Marilyn and I didn't sense the sisterhood like I did in the first release. I didn't connect with the Ocean. I might be biased. Overall I really enjoyed both reads, but I recommend if you can find the original release online or at your local library that you check it out. It's worth it! This release is worth the wait as well.

“Books were a safe place, a world apart from my own. No matter what had happened that day, that year, there was always a story in which someone overcame their darkest hour. I wasn't alone.”
--This was the best line in the entire book.--
Getting into this book, I no expectations. I knew it'd be about a siren, (clearly,) but had no idea which way it would go. I was pleasantly surprised with the story line. It was simple; even sweet.
If you are looking for a good "in-between" book to refresh your palette, this may be the sort you are looking for. The reading is quick and light, and doesn't call for much over-thinking.

I listened to the audiobook of this and I would rate it 2.5 stars. I was glancing at some of the reviews of this book and people were professing their love of this story because of how emotional it was and the wonderful telling of love on so many levels. I think my problem with this story was that I didn't connect to this but on a surface level. There is no depth to this story. Kahlen is a Siren who falls for a human named Akinli. Kahlen speaks to him through sign language or writing words on paper because if she speaks to him, he will walk into the ocean and die. Both Kahlen and Akinli fall ill with mystery symptoms questioning what is their connection and can they figure it out in time. I will say that Kiera Cass must pray to the cover gods because her book covers are to die for. This is my least favorite Kiera Cass book.

This is an easy read if you don't want to take too long on one book and while I wouldn't call it action packed it did hold my attention the entire time. I never felt like it lagged. The Romance is of course a little far fetched with the heroine only spending any time with him twice until the end and yet she longs for him and misses him so much and is ready to give everything up for a chance to be with him, but at the same time it rang true to me because of her personality. She was so ready to fall in love and get married that it was no surprise to me that she fell for the first guy who talked to her. I thought it was very interesting that the author chose to give the ocean a voice and a personality. It was a unique book and I enjoyed reading it, although at times it read as pretty depressing.

I read her original version of this first, and I didn't think that one was half bad. It wasn't the best, was slow at times, and her writing style wasn't as refined as now, but I overall enjoyed it. When I found out about this new version, I was excited to see how much better it would be but was thoroughly disappointed. Her writing style very much improved, but she cut out so much and added details that did not contribute any better to the experience. The ending was so rushed too! I feel so let down by it. The older version's ending was much more satisfying and the story had more meat. If you read this version and were not satisfied, please read her old one! If you look it up, you'll find it for free! The only thing is that the surprise ending with Aisling will be spoiled. If you haven't read this book yet, I highly recommend reading that version first, maybe not even get this one at all. At least it will save you the money.

Glowing recommendations from a friend and here on the store had me excited to start "The Siren," but I can't see what all the fuss was about. The plot is original and stirring, but the writing just doesn't back it up. The relationships almost all lacked depth. It just isn't enough to tell me how dreadfully connected two characters feel; I have to be made to feel it myself. And that isn't just a matter of the short amount of time these supposedly star-crossed lovers spent together. Try "Twilight" to see the supernatural combine with adolescent infatuation in a much more intense, believable fashion.

I will be giving this book a 3 out of 5 stars. Overall, I am not really sure how I feel about this book. I have mixed emotions. This book was a fast read, but when I see the name Kiera Cass my mind instantly goes to the Selection series and all its wonderful detail and beauty. However this book was not what I thought it would be and I guess in a way the Selection series made me have ver high expectations for this book which this book did not deliver. I was not a fan of the Ocean and how she controlled the girls, to serve the thing that killed your family did not sit well with me and to then develop feeling for it, to look at it as the mother you lost, even though she was the one that killed the main character's mother, it just seemed wrong. I am still uncertain if I should even be giving this book a three but for it to make me step back and think about the characters and the Ocean I thought I might as well because it must have touched something inside for me to really just think about it.

ATTENTION- THIS CONTAINS SPOILERS!!
I read The siren by Kiera Cass. Something you should first know about her as an author- she doesn’t always make her plots super realistic. That is not a bad thing, though. I love being able to lose myself in a fantasy.
The Siren is about a girl named Kahlen who was saved from a shipwreck to become a siren. First, though, she was human, but she would have died if she did not become a siren. The first line of the book is, “ It’s funny what you hold on to, the things you remember when everything ends.” So, Kahlen would have died had she not become a siren.
In this story, sirens sing in order to feed the ocean, who is not a physical being but can communicate with the sirens.
Kahlen never liked what she did. In fact, it haunted her. She would get so anxious whenever she had to sing, but she did it in order to keep her life.
Then, Kahlen falls in love with a human boy. After a while, she accidentally speaks to him,and since the ocean has made it so that when a siren speaks to a human they become property of the ocean, Kahlen must leave.
What Kahlen doesn’t know is that this has made her sick. The boy, Akinli, also becomes sick, and neither of them can heal until Kahlen returns to him as a human. So, because Kahlen is the Ocean’s favorite, the ocean allows Kahlen to return, but she cannot remember anything about her old life as a siren.

I love the Selection Series and was very skeptical of this book at first, but I got it free with a credit from Audible by the store and decided to atleast listen to it since I wasn't all that interested in reading it. I'm so glad I did! Within the first few minutes I was hooked because it is such a great spin on a classic- it barely reminded me of Ariel. This book is incredibly sad and sometimes heart breaking, but that is why I love Cass. She really gets you into the story and the characters emotions! I definitely recommend reading this book. You may not love it as much as the Selection series, but it is a good stand alone book that is nice to read if you're looking for a solid stand alone!

(Review of the 2016 edition) I read the 2009 edition of this book a few years ago and enjoyed it quite a bit. I thought it was the best of her books, actually. I went back to reread it only to discover it had been rewritten! The new edition is much worse than the original. Perhaps it will appeal more to others who liked the author's other work better, but now instead of a strong heroine who is striving to do good in the world even while wrestling with the siren's challenges, we have an angsty wimp who is dying for love. Give me a break! The rewrite is a disappointment that ruined a book I liked quite a bit. Hopefully I'll be able to find an old copy.

I really loved the premise of this book. Sirens are such a mysterious mythology and some of my very favorite characters featured in a lot of role playing games. Kahlen is the main protagonist and she is a Siren. She is biding her time until she can return to being a normal girl. She doesn't enjoy killing people, but knows it must be done in order to save many more.
The first 70% book is wonderful, it's a non traditional love story, where it fell flat for me was the last 30%. The mysterious illness that plagues both Akinli and Khalen seemed too far fetched for the mythology.
I did however enjoy the pacing, the secondary characters, and the love story. Still an enjoyable read.

“There’s always room for love. Even if it’s as small as a crack in the door.”
----Kiera Cass
Kiera Cass, the New York Times bestselling author, has penned a heart-breaking tale of love in the huge vast blue ocean, in her book, The Sirens that narrates the story of a young siren who lives in the depths of the ocean and has a beautiful voice but longs to have a life of her own instead of serving the ocean, unfortunately against the rules of the ocean. But when she falls for a human, things become so difficult for her to survive her solitude anymore.
Synopsis:
Throughout the ages, the Ocean has occasionally rescued young women from drowning. To repay their debt, these young women must serve for 100 years as Sirens, remaining young and beautiful and using their deadly voices to lure strangers into watery graves. To keep their true nature secret, Sirens must never speak to humans, and must be careful never to stay in the same place for too long. But once her century of service is over, each Siren gets a chance to start over – a chance to live the mortal life that was almost stolen from her.
Kahlen became a Siren after her family died in a terrible shipwreck, decades ago. And though a single word from her can kill, she can’t resist spending her days on land, watching ordinary people and longing for the day when she will be able to speak and laugh and live freely among them again.
Kahlen is resigned to finishing her sentence in solitude…until she meets Akinli. Handsome, caring, and kind, Akinli is everything Kahlen ever dreamed of. And though she can’t talk to him, they soon forge a connection neither of them can deny… and Kahlen doesn’t want to.
Falling in love with a human breaks all of the Ocean’s rules, and if the Ocean discovers Kahlen’s feelings, she’ll be forced to leave Akinli for good. But for the first time in a lifetime of following the rules, Kahlen is determined to follow her heart.
Kahlen is a siren who after her family's death becomes a Siren and started living in the Ocean. By the rules of Ocean, she gets to live for 100 years in order to serve the ocean to feed its hunger by luring humans with her beautiful voice. But Kahlen is not happy with her life, she longs for a happy life with the love of her life like a human being, she is very lonely and years for companionship. Her wish comes true when she meets and falls for a human boy named Akinli.
Well, another disappointing read by Kiera Cass, although this book released before The Selection series. Okay, let's not totally negative rant about the book, there are some positive points too!
They are as follows:

There are hardly any, except for the concept, which is about Sirens! Sounds fascinating from the blurb, but the book is not at all fascinating or anything closer to that!
What went wrong:
The romance projected between Kahlen and Akinli is not that emotional or heart-felt, instead they both for one another too soon and also there is no passion among them to move the readers deeply from their hearts.
Once again, the main character is not strong or brave to project her as an epitome among young girls. Moreover, the dialogues are very boring and uninteresting. Her selfish attitude annoyed me till the very last page of the book.
The pacing of the book is very slow and does not even pick up speed even half way through the story.
Well on a positive note, the writing style of the author is eloquent and the details about each scene is laid down with intricacy thus letting the readers feel like it is happening right in front of their eyes. The world building is simply perfect and my heart simply syncopated with the immortal mermaids and their grief.
The supporting characters are quite well-developed, even the hero, Akinli himself, is a sweet and kind nature man whose demeanor is simple and kept down to earth.
In short, if you are a huge Kiera Cass fan, do pick up a copy of this book.
Otherwise, you can turn a blind eye to this novel!
Verdict: The author's bewitching take on the life of Sirens is perfect, so read it if you want to explore the universe under the Ocean.

The Siren by Kiera Cass was completely intoxicating from beginning to end. Kahlen is a Siren. It almost feels like a re-telling of The Little Mermaid. Actually, the more I think about it, the more it feels like Kahlen is an Ariel with a twist. There was the whole insta-love thing, that seemed a little too fast for these characters, but they were still pretty adorable.
The Sirens have this amazing bond. It's like they become sisters, and I love how they bicker, but also have each other's back. They are a true sisterhood. This was an interesting and intriguing little story, that's I'm glad I read.

I still like the selection series better but this book was really good but not what expected at all. I finished the book in a day because I could not put it down. I was really happy with the ending of the book. The Ocean was really selfish. I like how throughout everything Kahlen still kept her humanity but after doing this for 80 years why now did she finally break down and start disobeying. This book was unlike anything I had read before and it really was a good book. I really like the relationship between Akinli and Kahlen.

Honestly, I was a little hesitant to read this. I was worried it would just be another teen-romance-against-difficult-circumstances book. Instead it's,an entirely new fairy tale told with skill and a nod to old tales. Fans of the fairy-tale genre will love it. It's not merely a YA romance novel, it's a charming tale woven by a skilled story-teller.

This was a very well written story. Interesting concept about the fable of women calling ships to their sinking death but with a twist.
The romance story was very beautifully detailed. The one drawback was that the lives of the sirens went on for a very long time before the
meeting with the main character and the young man on shore that she falls in love with even comes to be. Too long in my opinion. But once that got going it was an even better read. Couldn't put it down even when it took long to get past all the history of the 4 ladies stuck paying their 200 year debt to the Ocean. If you like something really different but with a good romance, this is a great find. I really like this author and it was very nice NOT to have sequels, like so many of these books do. Will read it again. Thank you Ms. Cass for a wonderful time of reading for a determined romantic like me.

I had enjoyed the Selection series, a cross between Hunger Games/Divergent futuristic dystopia and The Bachelor, so tried this too. The others are fun reading but this is BRILLIANT. How might present day Sirens have ended up singing ships to their deaths on rocks? The twists and turns in this story, with main characters hating what they must do in service to the Ocean, their bonds to each other, and doing their best to have quality of life until they can leave service, kept me riveted. I am so happy Kiera Cass is young- I will buy everything she ever writes, I hope for many years to come! Get yours on a Friday- you won't be able to put it down, you'll need the weekend!

Really really enjoyed this book. I actually finished the whole thing in a day. This book had my emotions going. The whole sisterhood relationship and eventually losing the sisters after so long had me. Ainsleys story and departure had me tearing up. I do wish there was more in depth about Kahlen and Akinli getting to know each other and there growing love. I felt that as long as this book was there really was much of them actually being together. I also would have enjoyed a longer and in depth epilogue. But the story did keep me hooked all together an excellent read.

The first book I read by Kiera Cass was The Selection. I really enjoyed that book and am waiting for the sequel. While I was waiting I looked up her other books and found this one. When I saw that it was her first book, was initially self-published, was only $3.99 and was about a Siren, I wasn't terribly interested. But then, I really enjoyed The Selection...and it was only $3.99...so I thought why not? I am so glad I did, I really enjoyed it! It is unique! And while being a Siren is essential to the story, it's not in the way you think it will be. The way the main character, Khalen, has to work through her thoughts and feelings are communicated so well and her thoughts are deep, complex and well-developed. It was a privilege to go on this journey with her. Also, I was grateful for the nature of Khalen and Akinli's physical relationship. Also, the humor in the story-telling was delightful! Thanks for such an enjoyable story!

I found myself trying to speed read through this book at about the 1/3 mark. The characters were bland (except for Elizabeth: would like to know more about her!) and the story idea of Sirens in general was completely ridiculous and frankly uncomfortable/disturbing. Very little description on WHY the ocean needs all those souls. How do you give this book 4 stars when there are SO many other young adult books out there that are so much better! You can't give a rating for a book just because you liked the author's other books. I only checked this book out because people gave it 4 stars!!! I'm giving it 2 because I thought the writing flowed nicely and was easy to read. However, I didn't enjoy it or get emotionally tied to any of the characters. Which is a must for me...

So many people gave this book a low review. I loved this book! It was beautiful and haunting. I felt the same pain that Kahlen felt as I read her story. I yearned for her to be able to find love. The personalities of the Sirens were so human even if they weren't anymore.
There was a moment during this book that Akinli and Kahlen were together. I was so engrossed in my book that when my husband asked me a question I was afraid to talk, because Kahlen couldn't talk for fear of killing Akinli!
This is definitely a must read!

I got this book based on reading The Selection series. Yes, they were predictable, but the were easy, fast reads. This was such a stale, boring story that I'm surprised I managed to finish it. Great idea but very poorly executed. So many pages were just overwrough drivel that could have been condensed into a few tight paragraphs. Instead, it was like sittng in a class that you really hate. You know you'll see it through to the end, but getting there is torture. While this isn't the worst book I've ever read, Twilight still holds that honor, it sure ranks in the bottom 10.

This book is pretty slow, and even though the plot is seemingly interesting and different from most romance or YA books I still found most parts to be boring. I'm a little disappointed in how this story panned out and I don't think I would recommend it. But it definitely wasn't the worst book I've ever read. It's hard to describe what this novel is missing but it just kind of feels like something is off with it.

It's very different but I liked it. It starts out weird. The writing is weird not the story. I had a hard time figuring out anything or making any sense of it but once I fell into the groove of the storyline and characters it was good. It's a new approach to the idea of Sirens. I like this author I've read most of her stuff. This was a good book but it's definitely different and I can't say that I loved it. But I don't hate it. I do wish there would have been another chapter explaining more of her life with him, but the way it is written it leaves it up to your imagination.
I would recommend this book to anyone who loves romance.

This book opens with a fascinating idea involving sirens, the mythical creatures. The story certainly opens with a bang and the reader is immediately sucked in. Unfortunately, the body of the story is somewhat lacking as it seemed to drag on and on without much substance. It was painful and almost completely void of hope. Once the climax is reached the action picks up again to bring the readers to an unexpected and somewhat satisfactory end. The beginning and the end are intriguing and entertaining but getting through the middle was a challenge. If you are a fan of action, you will have to be patient through this tale.

This is a short and sweet, and fanciful, contemporary fairy tale retelling of a combination of The Little Mermaid and ocean folklore styled tales (selkies came to mind a great deal). I was wary at first, but Kiera Cass picked her themes and stuck with them. If you're looking for a grittier kind of retelling, this is not that, but it is a nice short and sweet read between books.

I went into this book knowing that there were mixed reviews and that siren are mermaids basically. They seduce men and killed them... This book I felt was much more than a simple take on sirens. It was wonderful and I personally enjoyed it more than the selection series. The main protagonist is relatable and likable. I understood her struggles and felt she truly understood love and sacrifice. I wish this was more than just a stand alone but this makes me look forward to future novels from Kiera Cass.

There was a bit too much insta-love for me, but at least the main character recognized that it was insta-love (although she then went with it anyway). There were a few moments where I wanted to yell at the main character for being stupid, but it all worked out to a satisfying end. I probably won't re-read it, but i was anxious to pick it back up on the occasions that I had to put it down. Nothing life-changing, but worth the read if you've enjoyed Cass' other books.

There was something in this book that was able to convey to me a lot of emotion. The main character had a lot of internal and external struggles, and while most of the book was spent on Khalen’s troubles, it never felt whiny or annoying. Her problems felt real and worthwhile, and throughout the book I was able to empathize her and feel for her deeply.
What really shined in The Siren was the main romantic relationship. While Khalen and Akinli became enamored rather quickly it never struck me as insta love. Their relationship was sweet, and the way they interacted felt very genuine to me and not overly cheesy or ridiculous. I loved their first meetings, and it really says something about the romance in a book when I become very attached to the main ship within the first forty or so pages.
Admittedly, the side characters, while varied and interesting, were somewhat one sided, and the world building that went into the fantasy elements of this book were simplistic at best. Still, I was able to look past these things and enjoy the emotional side of this book instead.
I know that The Siren won’t be for everyone, but I recommend at least trying this book. It worked for me, and hopefully it will work for you too.

I am humongous Kiera Cass fan, her writing is mind blowing. This book in particular, is very different than the selection series. They aren't a part of the same series if you were wondering. I don't suggest this book if you are below ten because the book is a little creepy. The main chararter Kahlen tends to be a bit of a debbie downer but still she is a go getter. I really suggest this book and the entire selection series.

I loved this book once Akinli came into the picture. Cass has the ability to make the reader invested in her character's lives. I was rooting for Kahlen and Akinli the whole time! My only feedback was the backstory of Kahlen was dragged out; I wish it was shorter and you got to experience more of Kahlen and Akinli's lives together. Overall 3/5 stars; I think the amazing writing is worth sticking through the long beginning.

When I read the original story I fell in love with this gorgeous Romeo and Juliet type love story. 5 out of 5 stars all the way. The rewrite however... Well it didn't live up. It slimed over all the deep and beautiful parts of the original and changed a lot of the plot. Even though this made the plot more realistic, it became harder to get to know the characters. 3 out of 5 stars. Still worth reading, but not as wonderful as the first.

I was very curious about this book because I loved her other series, The Selection very much. At first I wanted to read it right away, but when I noticed it was planned for a re-write I decided to wait.
What I adore most about Kiera Cass her books is the way she writes, she has an easy and compelling way of writing that sucks you right into the story.
To be honest.. I was a bit disappointed when I finished this book. It was much heavier than I expected, and I did not like that. The Selection series is, overall, a happy series with a lot of romance and stuff, but she keeps it light. In this novel there is more depression and sadness covering the story. And it did not really fit with the rest of it.
The story is about Kahlen, who has been an obedient siren for over the last 80 years. But she starts having more thought about life, about what she could have but can’t because of what she is.. she meets a guy (don’t they always), Akinli, and falls in love. But being a siren forbids her for acting upon it, and she takes her distance. She gets a bit depressed, and misses him a lot.. Things go wrong when she sings for the Ocean and she ends up at Akinli’s feet. They fall deeper and deeper until they kiss and she speaks to him. But speaking to a normal human means condemning him to the Ocean, and to safe him she’s punished by adding 50 more years to her sentence as a siren and to never see him again. She agrees, but falls ill soon afterward (which is impossible for siren’s). And the weird thing being, she is not the only one.. Akinli is dying too.
I did like the story, though the plot was of course not the most original one. Girl meets boy, they fall in love, something happens what prevents them from being together, but in the end they have a happily ever after. What I did like though was the whole siren myth stuff. It was something different, especially the connection to the Ocean, and almost making Her like a person. I liked how it had a purpose, a goal. They don’t sing people to their dead for nothing, but to feed the Ocean and the Ocean gives life in return.. Liked that spin to it.
It was easy paced, not too fast, not too slow, and I was finished in no time.
The romance was quite cute. Because Kahlen can’t talk, their conversations consisted mostly of Akinli doing all the talking and her writing something down every now and then. But it was okay. Nothing hot and steamy, and kind of cliché with the loving and destiny… To me, not really special or breath-taking, but I was not bothered too much with it. It fitted.
I really enjoyed the setting, with sirens coming from different times, with different backgrounds.
I loved how she pictured the sirens and why they do what they do. It’s not that they eat them, or suck their souls out, but they do it for their “master” the Ocean. She gets hungry and feeds on the humans. In return, she gives to the humans and serve them in her own way. I liked that, it has a harmony to it. There are of course some rules to being a siren, like you can’t ever talk to humans (unless you are singing them to their dead) and you serve the Ocean for 100 years, after which you become human again (with no memory of the past) and you can live out your life. You are immortal for those years, so you don’t age and can’t get sick or die.
Also, when they went looking for a cure they went through all kind of folklore and myths, I liked that, it’s not like the cure just magically came upon them.
I found the main character a bit depressing, makes sense of course after living such a long life.. Especially if you can barely interact with humans. But overall she had a negative view, a negative personality and I dislikes that. That might be because I always try to look at things positive, but well..
Akinli was very nice, a real good person, always looking at things from the bright side, and I appreciated that.
I was kind of confused about her sisters, I did really like Aisling, but the others were quite whimsical. They were there for her, but not. They followed her but where not really there for her. But in the end they helped her and that’s what matters the most I suppose.
Even though I did not feel a lot along the way, I did get a bit down during the story. When the vibe of the book is a bit sad and depressing, it influences me.
Overall, the book had kind of a negative vibe and even though nothing’s wrong with more serious stories but it did not really fit in my opinion. Especially not with the cliché soulmates love conquers all stuff going on. Both of them are fine on their own, but I found it was not a great combination.
Even though I finished the book very fast, it was not that great of a story to me. I liked it yes, but it was not a great read. It was predictable and cliché, and I had not a lot of connections to the main character. Even though she re-wrote it, it was not as good as her Selection series. Maybe it is not fair to compare, but I could not, not compare it and I find The Siren flawed. I was really looking forward to it, and it did not live up to my expectations. It was a fine read nevertheless, Kiera Cass writes very easy and compelling, which added to my rating. And all the mythical stuff was quite interesting. Don’t really know if I would recommend it.. But I would like to rate it with 3 stars.

Nice easy quick read, but it seemed like it just wasn't quite on the level I was hoping Kiera Cass would produce. Having read The Selection series by Kiera Cass I had high hopes for The Siren, but it just seemed like it kinda fell flat.

The lead character in other books by Kiera Cass are fantastic and rounded- strong females that I would want my (future) daughters to emulate. This main character is weak and only feels whole when she has a man. I understand the attempt at romance and star-crossed lovers, but it truly fell flat. I found it offensive and would not care for a sequel, which is definitely saying something as the author's other works leave me begging for more.

I loved this. I can't think of any other way to put it other than that I simply loved this. I love Kiera Cass's writing, at times, it can be a little simplistic but there's nothing wrong with that. I loved the settings especially the town in Maine. I love quaint small town settings and there was one here that I loved. This is definitely a book that I could reread over and over and still love it.

This is not a YA novel that not a lot of adults will enjoy. It's immature, there's no real character development, lots of cliches and inexplicable behavior - and it's super slow. Maybe the virgin romance is enough to hold the attention of YAs but I was bored and annoyed.

But I fell in love with this story. I'd attempt to read it on several occasions but it wasn't until Friday it "made sense" and I could not put it down! Very much the others I've read, it was a constant page turner.

First of all i'd like to say that this book would've been a million times better if it had been from a different character's point of view because honestly, the main issues i had with the book had to do with the main character, Khalen. I was ok with her in the first few chapters but as the book dragged on, she just seemed to get more and more whiny and repetitive. and her whole "loving personality" got on my nerves pretty quickly and she reminded me less of a powerful siren and more of some annoyingly thirsty girl at my school.as for the love story, i was rolling my eyes through pretty much the whole thing. they knew each other for, wow an entire week and oh look they're soulmates. and Akinli, the love interest didn't seem well developed at all and sounded more like a 40yr old dad than a "hot"teenaged boy. and if their wedding hadn't been at the end of the book, i would've put it down after reading it. normally i wouldn't have been so irritated if the book was only about the romance, but this bookreally could've been amazing. i loved the whole idea of the sirens and how they lived among humans and got to watch the world progress, i LOVED the character of the Ocean, and i thought the other sirens were fascinating and seemed to show actual development. i guess what i'm trying to say is read this book for the sirens and side characters and skim the romance and it'll actually be worthwhile

I'm a huge fan of Kiera Cass's Selection series. However, I did not like this book at all. It is terribly sad, long and drawn out. I felt that I wasted hours of my life reading it, only to get to the unsatisfying ending.

Kiera Cass is honestly one of my favorite authors. Although her depictions of everything are amazing in itself. The siren especially brought out a different light apart from her other amazing books. That I highly advise you check out. I've read this book over and over again, I don't regret it. It's a good book to read when you're stressed out and want to escape for a little bit.

When I first started reading this I had no idea what it was really about. I had never heard of the story about where the sirens originated from. The way the author made the characters and their backgrounds I thought was very creative. I felt this book deserved four stairs bevause the first thirty percent seemed rather boring. There were some sad parts in the book though....but it jusr made you closer to the characters. This is also a good read for the younger readers and is plenty appropriate.......I say this because I am younger and try to keep away from books that are clearly meant to be for the adult crowds. Like the title says this book is good for someone who likes sci fi/mythical romances. I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to other book worms out there.

I very rarely will not finish a book, even one I do not like, so I read this until the end hoping it would get better. It didn't. The main characters are bland and don't question things that they should. Heck even the police don't follow through. I kept waiting for explanations or a character to behave normally. A lot of chapters were boring too with so much detail it was difficult to read or care what happened. Very disappointed after reading so many good reviews.

I wasn't sure want to expect out of the this book at first. I was a huge twi-curls fan and did enjoy the first two chapters Kiera made available on her web site, so i decided I would buy it. I started reading and at first the book was a little slow for me. The history was enjoyable and needed in further chapters in the book, but it slowed down the pacing. Although, as the book went I got further and further drawn into the story. I absolutely could not put it down. I cried so hard during the last few chapters, I know that no other a book has ever gotten so much emotion out of me on the first read. I would recommend to anyone who loves a good story about love and friendship. it may have started slow, but after all isn't the last chapters of a book that really makes it worth reading. ;)

The first part of the book was really slow. I did have to force my self to keep going, but I'm so glad I did. I greatly enjoyed the relationship of the ocean and Kahlen. The romance in this book was so sweet. Most of the romance in young adult books are pretty cliche, this was a nice change of pace.

It's hard to put down and when you aren't reading you are thinking about what is going to happen next. It's a wonderful young love story and gives love so much more meaning. I talked so much about it my wife had to read it also. She feels the same way as I do about the book. There is so much to this book you just have to read it.

A fun read!. Mermaids, true love and trips around the globe all rolled into one short novel. She has a way with words and outlook on life through this book. She brought the smells and ocean to life. I am over 50 and enjoyed the reading.

The Siren is just plain amazing.
If you love Twilight you will love this book! Now it's not about vampires or anything, but the love story between Akinli and Kahlen will very much remind you of that of Edward and Bella.
It's action packed and never boring. Just when you think everything is going to calm down something else happens.
It's funny, sweet, adventurous, and a story like one you've never heard before.
Pick up The Siren, I promise you wont put it down, and you wont regret it.

WOW! Just wow! I read alot of books and this was one of those few books that instantly drew me in and would not let me put it down. I found myself thinking about it all the time, wanting to know what was happening from being genuinely interested in the lives of the characters.

This was an absolute gem of a book. I was held captive in Cass' words from start to finish. Excellent writing and character development. The Siren is a book that crawls down into your soul and stays there. I would recommend this book to anyone, and it deserves every ounce of praise it receives.

I was captivated by this book from the beginning. The plot is unique and interesting, but the book was extremely slow at points and there was a lot of repetition. I skipped pages at points because nothing was happening.

A well-written novel, a story that isn't like all the other romances. I really liked this book. I especially loved the way the Ocean was written as a character... but you should read it yourself and enjoy it :)

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. It was imaginative, well written (Kiera's descriptive writing is amazing and heart-warming), and refreshing novel about Siren's. I can't wait to read more of Kiera Cass's writing when it comes out. Kudos

Beautiful and so creative with the twist on sirens and the Ocean. The final chapter and epilogue was haunting, heart breaking, and beautiful. As I've gotten older, I've grown a deep appreciation for stories that show friendships and a sisterhood between girls. Cass did a wonderful job and what Kahlen's friends did for her and the final chapter will continue to haunt me.

Kiera Cass returns with yet another keeper. This book is so beautiful. Not just the cover(although major shoutout to the designer of the cover) but the plot and the concept is so beautiful.
At first I really thought this book would disappoint me (like The Heir), really. But then Kahlen met Akinli and everything picked up pace. So many things were happening then, I didn't want to keep the book down. The story surprised me. EVERY. CHAPTER. had a new thing going on. Entry of some characters, exist of some. I loved all of it.
I always thought siren's were these evil girls who would make people do whatever they want but this proved me wrong. These sirens were evil in some way but the bond they shared was beautiful. I wish I could accomplish something like that. There was something special that "the sisters" shared and it filled my heart with love. I don't know how much you will like it but I loved the bond "the sisters" shared more than the one Akinli-Kahlen shared.
All in all, I loved it. This book is beautiful. I cried, still am. It was heartbreakingly beautiful.

After nearly drowning with her family, the Ocean saves Kahlen and turns her into a Siren. But this comes with a price, for 100 years she will have to serve with the other Sirens, luring people to their deaths to feed the Ocean. After this she will be free to live her life again, but for Kahlen this is too long and after 80 years she accidentally meets and falls in love with Akinli. Though she vows to forget him and continue to serve, for all their sakes, there are stronger forces at work.
I loved Keira Cass' Selection series so was excited to read this. It's not quite up to the same level as those but I still really enjoyed it.

I was very suprised at the way this story turned around. I will admitt the ending was on the predictable side but they way they got to it made you want to know more. It left me with the feeling that if they did another book i would be first in line to buy it.

Not as good as the Selection series by Kierra Cass, but it was decent. It was the first time I read a book that had this type of supernatural power. I've read about werewolves, vampires, immortals, Harry Potter, people with magical powers, but Kahlen had the power to be immortal and stop aging for as long as the ocean needed her to feed it. (80 years). Her "sisters"(other girls like her) sing to the ocean every few months, which causes whatever ship that's in the water at the time to flip over killing all the people onboard. The drowned people are the oceans food. Pretty interesting concept. I had to finish it. However, it's most likely not a book that I will read again.
