A different take on the private eye story. Sydney Brennan is smart, persistent, and not what I expected. The story is fully-developed, plot twists unpredictable. (It needs to be said, however, that I'm always surprised that the butler did it.) I was very pleased with this inaugural novel by Judy K. Good job!

Sydney is approached by the child of a man accused of murdering her mother. She wants to know about him, because he was her father. Problem is, the murder happened about 20 years ago. Can Sydney unravel the mystery? You're going to love this book!

Another book ruined by fem-jep and "guns are bad" mentality. The protagonist, and I presume the author, doesn't want bothered with self-protection so the main character, an investigator, lets herself be beaten nearly to death and almost raped. As best I can guess from the ending, the woman must be suicidal. What was she planning at the end? She is from Tennessee where it is possible to get a handgun permit, and Florida and Tennessee have reciprocity agreements so her lack of defense is inexcusable. Perhaps the author should stick to the legal areas since she seems more comfortable there. (And Sydney's big worry was that the woman who saved her had a gun in her glove box. Did she know she didn't have a permit?)

Great fun meeting the diminutive Sydney Brennan as she uncovers and solves a decades murder and more. Judy Walker makes her characters believable and well rounded and her descriptions of rural Florida and its citizens rings true. Everyone is dealing with their own demons but they rise above them. Above all this is well written fun.

Loved everything about the book. Sydney, the main character, is a P.I. with an attitude that won't quit and brain that works overtime. The story was smooth and action packed with witty conversation and humor woven in. Looking forward to reading the next book.

A great action packed, fast paced investigative thriller. I loved the characters even though I was disappointed with Richard. Sydney Brennan is definitely a series I'll continue reading. Many thanks and compliments to the author!

This was a very entertaining story that kept me interested until the end. I liked spunky Sydney, although her constant look for trouble got sometimes on my nerves. I also liked the development of characters such as Noel, Brian, & Ida.

The author wrote a very believable and life-like private eye mystery. Very polished and well edited. The characters were real and easy to like. For once the detective was not a substance abusing loser trying to recover from a recent loss, although she did have a distant past that troubled her. I enjoyed the book and found it hard to put down.

I liked the book very much, but this author needs a good proof reader, sometimes the sentences don't make sense because words were missing. The story line was quite compelling and keeps your attention until the end. I liked the characters and the story was well handled by the author.

An excellent, well-written story, with a better-than-average plot and real, well-rounded characters. One or two minor typos, but far fewer than most novels. I'm a Sydney Brennan fan -- more than that, I'm a Judy K. Walker fan!

Sydney Brennan is someone I'll be checking in with again. Fun story, could have used a little closer proofreading, but not enough to really distract from the story. Good characters, and some good insights on Florida.

I thoroughly enjoyed this first story (for me) in the Sydney Brennan series. I liked how Ms. Walker developed Sydney's character, making her an imperfect, smart but naive, caring but reckless heroine. I sometimes got a little bit lost with the cast of characters, but it kept my attention and I look forward to the next book in the series.

I rated this book 5 stars for the interesting story-line, compelling characters, realism, and a woman investigator who is not over the top macho, feminist, flirt, or amazingly stupid when dealing with dangerous situations. A very enjoyable read from beginning to end.

I liked this book. It had dimensional character development and a potential for continuing characters. There was some graphic violence, but it fit with the story line. I plan to read additional books by this author.

Walker's first book in the Sydney Brennen series is a well plotted mystery. Good writing, well drafted characters and she portrays a local's view of the panhandle of Florida. I immediately went looking for more of her books.

An excellent story which kept my interest. I will be looking for more of her work. The cover put me off for some reason, but I am glad I started reading. If you like your investigators gritty and intelligent, you will like this one.

A thoughtful mystery featuring an independent, young female investigator. I liked the characters and didn't really guess 'who done it.' Also, I guess have a weakness for plucky introspective young women . :)
