Excellent history of the SAS. In the age where focus is on US Delta force and Seals, it's very good to understand the global roots of Special Forces and what the men of SAS did to found this special military branch.

Interesting history of the development of the SAS at the beginning and the detour it took as it developed ways of fighting in the desert that stood it well as it moved on to other environments in its post-war years.

This was not your typical SAS action packed yarn. It was a very boring hum drum history of a lot of individuals running around the desert chasing Nazi's. But, yes that was their job, and that's what they did. However, the now decades old made for television series "Rat Patrol" had more action. How many grey beads out there remember that one? Maybe the cast was more convincing?
I really did not understand why the author kept reminding everyone about some of the individuals and their "suppressed" sexual orientation when describing the unit. Was this his way of telling the reader that this was the first gay friendly special forces unit?
I'm sure that today's SAS professional when having his pint of ale, standing around with his mates is saying...now then, your telling me that the bloke was gay, bugger that.

The almost constant action in this story keeps the reader on the edge of his seat throughout. The plethora of names involved in these missions is a bit overwhelming, but there is an annex to the book that keeps all of them in their proper position. The number and variety of the SAS missions provided the author with a gold mine of ideas for the plot. However, the descriptions of these actions tends to be a bit sparse. The reader is forewarned of this by the author's statement in the preface that the SAS files were usually cryptic, and lacked details. Nevertheless, Rogue Heroes is a fast and compelling read, complete with pictures and maps of the operational areas.

Interesting story telling the WWII exploits of a secret army
of brave misfits. From Desert Rats to fighting in the forests
Of Europe. Many battles and escapes. A bit jumpy but interesting
story of a relatively unknown unit made up of soldiers from
Ireland,Britain, France and the United States as well as a few other countries.

Intensive study of the start of special forces in the British Army that others soon followed. Focus on character with insightful capsule studies of the major players. Worthwhile to take a look particularly if interested in the Desert War. Coupled with a book about the LRDG one gets a fuller picture.

I Weston completion of this extraordinary book. I was riveted and could motility down til I completed it. to put names to the unknown heroism of those intrepid souls whose physical sufferingmusthavebeen horrendous but understated intentioned at all. I hope my children and their children will read this and challenge themselves equally in a peaceful era, as we all hope for. But she not, an example fortitude and camaradeie to fit them for challenges they may encounter.
