This is NOT good. The author starts out by telling a greatly interesting AND DIFFERENT story about a KING and his devastated people, lost and barely surviving (for 300 years) in a frozen lannd and their quest and struggle to find their way back home, through variance, strength and , yes, magic... then, the author suddenly goes back to the same thing as in his first book if this saga and lets you wondering whatever happened to this formidable king and people until the last few pages, where he lets you know if they made it or not and whatever happens next, should you be curious enough to find out, you MUST BUY THE NEXT BOOK. NOTE: After chapter 30, I wanted to find out as I was fed up with "more of the same" and I started scanning and SKIPPING pages, until I found The King & company, as I said, at the very end. I'm done with this repetitive storyteller.

Very thrilling and always keeps you wanting more. Gives a variety of views from different characters in the book rather than just one point of view. With having different aspects from the characters, it gives a deeper understanding of the characters.

James Maxwell's Silver Road was a delight to read and I could not put it down. Although at times I became a little tired of all the battle scenes and the length with which he described them. It is still a good read. The characters were unique and he created an interesting fantasy and magical world where I could imagine yet a third book in this saga. For the most part the author did not resort to any 21st century gadgets, but there were times that it seemed some of their actions were from a knowledge of something like a cellphone. Perhaps that was just my take on a particular outcome. I enjoy magic, in the style of Tolkien and the Lord of the Rings, which I think influenced James Maxwell in both his historical settings, and with the wisdom of those who see beyond the immediate. If you enjoy this genre you will love the James Maxwell books.

Book two is thrilling. The fight continues on and characters continue to evolve and grow. There is plenty of drama but it's all good.

There are some confusing parts and questionable details like when Aristocles goes to meet with Nilus and the remaining counsel members, why didn't his soldiers accompany him? If he was hailed as a hero why would the soldiers present not aid him from attack? Why would the remaining counsel even see him as a threat? They're a democratic system and if Nilus wanted to be first counsel couldn't he challenge Aristocles? It would make no sense for Phalesia to want war given how small they are and Aristocles brought peace. Why would Nilus assume that his return would mean the end of their nation becoming closer with King Nikolas? King Nikolas could die fighting the Ileans and now that Prince Dion returned both countries would continue to unite, given the relationship between Dion and Aristocles. So Nilus turning trader before even speaking with Aristocles was a bit premature. The golden is ark is gone. What is there left to battle over?

Did Kargan throw Jarvid in prison or did the guards release him? What is the purpose of King Palemon? He's claiming rule over an island? I thought he was the King of Phalesia?

The eldrens are so interesting with their abilities to change into another specie. What is unclear is how long they can remain in animal form? I got the impression they can only change for a matter of minutes but then that seems wrong when Maxwell writes of Ileana being able to fly as a dragon to Cinder Fen. The eldren can communicate telepathically? If this is so why couldn't Zachary or Aella communicate with their sons? Also what I didn't understand is the horn. Why didn't Eiric know he has the blood of Marrex and could unite his people and end their suffering? Why was this kept a secret? Did Zachary know King Palemon was on his way and would seek to destroy the eldren? It wouldn't matter if Eiric was king or not, King Palemon would still seek the death of eldrens.

Overall, I enjoyed the story despite the questions I pose. I'll admit I did not like the ending at all. Book two should of went further before ending as it did.

I discovered James Maxwell via my Kindle Unlimited subscription. I read quite a lot of fantasy and science-fiction, so his titles kept popping up in the recommended section. I started with Golden Age, which unfortunately meant waiting for the sequel. During those months of waiting, I read all of his other books - several of which kept me turning pages late into the night.

If you’re not familiar with his work, I highly recommend it. I find the worlds he creates to be detailed and fascinating, his characters complex and multi-faceted, and his plots not always evident. It’s clear that Mr. Maxwell carefully crafts every sentence in his stories, leaving trite phrases for dime store greeting cards.

As for Silver Road specifically, it does not disappoint. My only real complaint is that it starts off a bit slowly, with an unfamiliar setting and characters. It took me a few chapters to settle into the story and realize exactly how it was related to the original. I’m sure it would have helped to re-read Golden Age.

That being said, if you enjoyed Golden Age, you will likewise enjoy Silver Road. One word of warning: it will leave you waiting impatiently once again for the sequel!

I received a pre-release copy of Silver Road from JamesMaxwell.com and I have voluntarily reviewed this book.

I read James Evermen stories and enjoyed them very much. The shifting tides series is a very different world, but the writing and the stories remain excellent. The plot is exciting and moves right along. The characters are sympathetic and well rounded. This volume continues the story begun in the first volume and contains some unexpected shifts that keep things interesting. This volume ends in a very satisfying manner, but there are many items left unresolved so I eagerly look forward to the next installment in the series.

I liked this book better than the first mostly because it was able to get into the plot faster since the world was set up. It was slower in parts, mostly when focusing on the characters whom I was less interested in, but overall moved pretty well. There many twists for the characters, some that surprised me and some I saw a mile away (that Caesar-like death), and I am looking forward to the next book. I get a little bored with the battle scenes, but they are well written and weren't too long. I mostly want to find out what happens to Chloe and Dion.

Thanks For letting everyone know that this is another Christian fantasy epic. This is useful for evangelical Christians and also for those of us who wish to avoid such stuff. Not being a hater, just trying to avoid exaggerated notions of good and evil with Christian subtext, and, for me, worse , actual angels demons etc.

First of all, let's get the legalities out of the way. I received a free copy of this book by Mr. Maxwell. I have read several of James's books and every one of them have been a well written, entertaining and in-depth compilation of words. You will also enjoy The Evermen, a four book novel that will hold you enraptured from beginning to end. I also wrote reviews for them. Now for the final book review of Silver Road.
The Silver Road
This has been a fantastic journey, following the lives of Chloe, her father Aristocles who is the first counsel to Nicholas, king of Xanthos. They have weathered the invasion of Kargan, the warrior from across the sea and the land of Ileas and its ruler Midas.
If you remember in the first of this series, The Golden Age (Shifting Tides) life was tranquil until sailors from across the sea show up proposing to start trade with Phalesia. The sailors, managed by Kargan find a land of shape-shifters, dragons and serpents. But one thing alone stands out, the Golden Ark. Kargan, who supports the sun king Midas wants this ark more than anything. They devise a plan to steal the ark, returning it to Midas. But once tried, they fail. In the interim they decide to kidnap Chloe and race back across the sea. Battles are fought, creatures are exposed and life is not as it was. Many lands, many rulers and many wars are fought. The world is not as it was nor ever will be again.
The Silver Road takes up where Palemon, king of the land of the dead frees his ship which has been landlocked in ice for 300 years. Chloe travels with Dion, one of the shape shifters, the Ark becomes a major player and metal; gold, silver, bronze and copper have many powers, is used as currency, brings powers to witches and makes armor that withstands anything.
I could go on and on but that would only deter you from enjoying the second book in this series. James Maxwell has a way of creating a story that few authors can. I read his four volume set of books; The Evermen. That too was captivating and drew you, the reader into its realm. I have put Mr. Maxwell high on my list of favourite authors. His style is thought-provoking, the characters and lands are unique, and the story is captivating. You will not be disappointed if you choose to add this author to your favorites as I did. Enjoy! You will not be disappointed.

The plot will keep you guessing. With each twist and turn, the author takes you on a wild journey that can only be sequestered by devouring every page of this book. The characters are as real as you and I and before you know it, you'll find yourself as emotional invested in them as they are in their own story.

The second book in the Shifting Tides series was better than the first! Such an intriguing story with every twist and turn imaginable. As soon as I started this series, I loved Dion, but I felt he was underdeveloped as a character. In Silver Road, he was the shining star! I absolutely loved it and fell in love with him even more. His kind heart and sense for leadership is ever inspiring. The way the story went with the Eldren was utterly fantastic. I cannot wait to read the next in this series!

As a 'bridge' novel between the initial offering and the (obviously forthcoming) sequel(s?) where the story will continue, this was an adequate but uninspiring instalment. Not much in the way of action, only new characters involve a long lost civilization returning, but very little action involving them; therefore at least one more book, and likely more, will be required to tie the strands into a whole.

This is a gripping tale of strong willed people looking to do the best they can for their countries while dealing with the trials and tribulations of love, death, honor and greed. I recommend reading this with the knowledge that you will feel compelled to read the entire series.

This second book became bigger and bigger. More characters, more twisted turns, complexities of intrigue, murder , mayhem, battles and most of all mysteries. You have to read book three, cannot let the story end here. Very well written.

I started reading this story right after completing book 1 and was pleased with the development of the main characters. I thought it struck a good balance of political maneuverings with enough understanding of the characters why the decisions were believable. While most of the plot followed a predictable path, there were enough unexpected events that I didn't feel I had everything worked out.

Cons: Like most second books in a series, Silver Road at times is a bit slow as the primary characters are spread across the "world" and new characters are introduced.
Pros: About half way through the book starts to gel and pick up steam, screaming to a shocking end. I am eagerly awaiting the next installment!

I was lucky enough to receive a pre-release copy- thanks JamesMaxwell.com! Although would happily have paid for it but getting it early was too good an opportunity to pass up! The second instalment of the shifting tides is equally as great as the first. Characters are well written, plot is an excellent pace and the world colourful and engaging. I may even be enjoying it more than the Evermen Saga ?. James Maxwell if fast becoming one of my favourite fantasy authors, no mean feat. Basically all you need to know is that you have to read this series. Roll on book 3. Thanks for the words Mr Maxwell.

I really enjoyed the continuing story of the main characters. The introduction of new characters at the beginning was a bit of a throw, because it seemed almost like a whole new story. Then these characters are barely touched on throughout the book. Because of this new " threat" I only gave 4 stars.

This is a pretty good read, if a bit predictable. The plot line is much tighter than the first book, but with so many characters, you have to read book one in order to make sense of book two. I plan on reading the whole series.

This was a solidly entertaining read. The characters developed across the story line, the plot was interesting and had a few sub-plots, and it's all very imaginative with some new twists on old ideas. Would recommend.

All those that enjoy fantasy and story telling will like these two , and I assume at least three books, book two leaves a hanger and an unfinished story. I have ripped through these books as soon as I could get my hands on them. Waiting anxiously for the next.

I've already pre ordered the next. I was waiting the entire book to see where King Palemon would wind up. Some of the other storylines seemed to be close to wrapping up, or they should be. I can recommend. Gbash

I read the first book. I really enjoyed it. It was out of my "normal" read.

While I enjoyed this second book and all the characters because it is a very intricately-woven story and I was captivated by many impressive details... I was slightly disappointed. I won't elaborate though because I don't want to spoil it. Some readers may not feel the same way.

I will read the third book.

A free copy was provided by the author for an honest review.

I liked this book for the most part, the characters are interesting and there mannerism intense. I like the diversity of the different cultures and the back story builds as you read across through the series in regards to origin. The source and the drawing on magic for the 2 main cultures is different than what I've read before e.g. The channeling through the different metals and different species of creatures, made it a fun read!

I loved the cultural awareness thriving within this book. It put me in mind of the Roman/ Greek empires, and the Mediterranean Sea, the rise of the Persian Empire, and other such tales. These books are written with a strategy that belies the fantastical realm to which they take you, and open your eyes to the subtle connections to modern day politics and drama.

I loved the first one and quickly picked up the second. Unfortunately, it was a huge let down - everything felt incredibly rushed for one event to the next. The fluid story that was present in the first was lost.

Fun book to read!!! First read from this author, and was pleasantly surprised. The characters were lively, and there were enough surprises to keep me reading longer and longer... I cannot wait to read the second book.

Plotting and pacing remains strong. Compared to the previous book, the characters are more developed, the dialogue is much improved, and Maxwell does a much better job of giving you a sense of scope of the world.

His books should be turned into movies! But of course the book is always better. I love it when the writing is so good you can picture everything in your imagination. I had read the first one in this series a while back, so it was difficult to remember what had transpired. I could not put this down! And now If you will excuse me I will start on the next one in the series.
