Hard pages, hard cover, small size pages, and of course the colors and whimsy that we all remember from Dr. Seuss. The book is approximately 5" x 6" (no ruler close by), so beginning readers will have a good time reading it without having to hold a heavy book. I let my grandsons hold the book while I read it to them, and when they're ready to read it, I'll be thrilled to just sit and listen.

This is a terrific book, was in excellent condition just as the seller promised. My son LOVES this book, he really pays attention to it. You will be tongue tied by the end, but it is so worth it. I definitely recommend this seller and their products.

I'm really sad to give this book only two stars, but my daughter just doesn't like it. She sees me getting tongue-tied as I read it and she knows it's supposed to be funny, so she sort of laughs. But her attention doesn't stay with me because the story line just doesn't interest her. She's a big fan of other Seuss books (like One Fish, Two Fish and Green Eggs & Ham), so the Seuss style isn't the issue. It's just that it seems a bit pointless to her. Oh well. I like it.

This is really Dr. Seuss's best book - some of the others, although hailed as works of absolute genius, show signs of the good doctor being somewhat high on his own supply. But here we have a book that is absolutely entertaining, and in a way educational: the dedication to educators at the Soledad Lingual Laboratories sparked my interest in linguistics when I was still very young. Whatever your age, break this book out at a party and pass it around, taking turns reading it out loud. Talk about good, clean fun! It also works well with foreigners learning English.

I adore "Fox in Socks". It seems to me that most of the negative reviews are from those who purchased the board book, not the hardcover. My copy of the hardcover has every rhyme right where it belongs. I'm about to be a first time dad, and I've spent every evening sitting in the nursery, practicing these rhymes. It's so much fun, and I can't wait to read it for my son or daughter!

I am VERY DISAPPOINTED with this book. I got it to read to my 16 month old grandson while waiting for our food when dining out. The pictures are on one screen and the words are on the other. He should be able to look at the picture while I read the words to him. I don't recommend this version of the book for young children.

No where in the discription did it say that it was a bilingual book. Luckily there was the original English written along with the Japanese. I didn't mind the other language. I just wish it had be clearly marked on the description page so I would know what I was purchasing.

I didn't expect this book to be the cardboard shortened version. Only after purchasing it did I see this in the reviews. The one time I didn't check. But otherwise, served its purpose as a basket filler for a fox themed baby shower gift.

Love Fox in Socks and love the format of these board books, but the Bright & Early versions of some of the longer Seuss books are abridged, making for some lurching rhythm to the great Seuss rhymes. I wish I'd realized this before buying.

Received this great book, that is a classic. I obviously did not read the description very well, as I thought this was a standard size book. Instead it is a smaller, cardboard book. It was a baby gift but instead my 18 month old is getting it for Christmas.

I ordered this book, thinking it would be in English. When I received it, however, it was a dual language book, with both English and Chinese. The description says nothing about this, but the image shows what it looks like. It ends up being quite befuddling to the eye to have 2 languages right under one another. For a book that's meant as a learning/tongue-twister book that's meant to be read quickly, it makes it far too confusing.

I was able to get a refund, however.

Dr. Seuss is great - our kids and grandkids alike have loved his books. Fox in Socks may not be as popular as the Cat in the Hat, but they are in the same genre and excellent for beginning readers.
We ordered the book using a link supplied by our daughter to the the store website, and that link showed the book in English. However, when the book was received, it was a dual language book (English plus Chinese or some other Asian language that we neither read nor speak). i hope the store doesn't make mistakes like this very often!

THis book and the other Dr. Suess books take up the whole screen in such a way that I canot get my Kindle to respond to my touch on the screen, except to turn the page. I cannot exit the book until I get to the very end. So if my child wants to end before the book is finished I find myself turning pages to get to the end and then finally being able to exit. There is no back arrow or home icon available during these books. This is frustrating. At times I have had to turn my Kindle off and reboot in order to go somewhere else. I love Dr Suess books. But this particular arrangement is a pain.

This is a great book to teach students rimes and onsets. The book is constructed in a way where there are numerous numbers of word families within the book. The book can act as a starting point for introducing word families, rimes, and onsets. For the earlier grades such as prek and kindergarten you may have to read the book to the students and point out some one the rhyming words. In the later grades students should be able to read the book themselves noticing word patterns, rhyming patterns, as well as other phonics strategies. The book is silly and light hearted where students can follow along with the story but also not be distracted by the story line. This is a great book to use in the elementary grades and beyond.

Sure, it teaches valuable vocabulary words and rhyme schemes to tiny tots. And no doubt there's a thesis somewhere comparing hapless Knox to Stalin knocking heads against the red-white-and-blue American Fox. But *Fox in Socks* is above all other things the first instrument of torture children can use against their parents.
Take Father, tired out from a hard day at the office. "Read me a story, Daddy," coos his blond princess. Father bravely tries to wrap his tongue around "Luke Luck likes lakes./ Luke's duck likes lakes." Daddy's little angel chortles with each misspoken word -- and there are plenty of them by the time he arrives at the muddle puddle tweetle poodle beetle noodle battle paddle battle." She goes to sleep secure in the knowledge that not only can she grow up to be president, but that she's already smarter than her poor parents.
And that's the genius of Dr. Suess. His tongue teasers and outrageous Goo Gooses and Bim Bens and Tweedle Beetles don't just
foster imagination -- they encourage kids to let it run rampant.

We have a (growing) collection of Dr. Seuss books for our 18-month-olds, and I can find something unique and educational in every one of them, this one included. I do think that, for children just learning language, the alliteration may be a bit of a negative - while they are working hard to understand and say individual words for different objects, the rhymes in this book make everything sound the same. I know this will be a hit for the kids when they are a bit older and have a more solid command of the vocabulary, but I find it not to be the MOST appropriate for my very young toddlers.

Even though this book doesn't leave a meaningful message like many other Seuss books (Horton Hears a Who, How The Grinch Stole Christmas, Yertle the Turtle, etc), it's still loads of fun to read. I bought this for my son when he was still a baby, and for a couple of years he didn't understand it and wasn't interested. Now that he's 3y.o. and into imaginative play, he loves it when we read the creative tongue-twisters of Fox in Socks, and tries to read along though it's still a bit difficult for him (some of the rhymes are difficult for me too if I read them quick!). Like all Seuss books, the rhymes, characters and silly stories are very creative and an incentive for children and adults to play with the imagination.

Although the store advertises this book for ages 4-8, my wife and I started reading this and other Seuss books to our children from 6 months on. Always a delight, our kids would laugh at the silliness while acquiring a zest for life at the same time. We started a great habit of reading two or three Seuss books before bed, and the kids loved them. Soon, they would memorize many of the phrases, beginning a lifelong passion for reading.
Every kid should experience reading Fox in Socks while growing up. Join the Fox in Socks as he leads Mr. Knox on a zany adventure of learning and silly rhymes. Combine it with other fun Seuss books and your kids will sit enthralled as you turn the pages. Highly recommended.

I definitely recommend the book called Fox in Socks by Dr. Seuss. I recommend it because it's fun to read aloud. Also, when I first read it, it was so challenging that my tongue was tied up in knots! It was so hard that my mom could barely read it to me out loud. When I was little I practiced. Now (since I practiced) I'm a lot better than when I was five-years-old. When I could finally read it good, I was so proud that I read it to my mom. She was amazed at how fast and good I could read it! She clapped.......and clapped........and kept on clapping. I was about to rate it my second place book, but now I rate it my first place book!

We are 4th and 5th graders and we enjoy reading Fox and Socks. This book has very good rhyming. People of all ages should read this book because it is a fun challenge for your tongue. We love how Dr. Suess put his imagination into this book and how he carefully placed his love into each and every word. We think that fox wanted to teach Knox to not to give up on himself and insisting that Knox can do it. It's a very good book but we want to complaint how at first it was easy but the words started getting difficult because if Dr. Suess wants children to read it the children might not know hard words that Dr.suess makes up. I would recommend this book for parents, teachers and children because you can read this book at any time. But remember, that this is a tricky tongue twister book so you might want to take it slow.

I bought a horse a year back and his name was Fox in Sox. I was informed that this was the previous owners' favorite childhood book. I bought the book and I must agree. As silly as it may sound to have a show horse named Fox in Sox, I am very glad, because I loved this book! We were going to change his name but after I read the book, I just couldn't and he shows proudly as the only horse named Fox in Sox!

Mr. Fox is a sneaky little guy in this giggle a minute book by Dr.Seuss. Starting off to tease his friend we hear, "Knox on fox in socks in box." and proceed from there to some real put a knot in your tongue twister of words. Yes,lots of outlandish tongue twisters with great illustrations to add to the pleasure of the read. This book is definitely an exercise for young and old, as you twirl your tongue this way and that and chuckle at your own inability to keep up with Mr. Fox. If you want to read a book that will make you giggle and jiggle and give your tongue a good wiggle, this is the one.

I realized today that the most beautiful aspect of the books Dr. Seuss wrote is all about reading them ALOUD. They are not meant to be silent. On the same note, they are also meant to be shared among the young and adult. I find myself at a responsibility now to share and talk about them. Plus, with every Dr. Seuss story, I am realizing, there must also be a special story to share. Here is my first. Come and check out more of this review here.

I grew up with Dr Suess books so I couldn't wait to share them with my own children. The books are illustrated simply, the text is easy to read and creatively laid out and the silly rhymes make me and my children laugh.
What I've noticed from reading them Dr Suess books (they are 1 and 2.5 years) that it has really helped my 2.5 year old with increasing her vocabularly, saying words properly and recognising sounds that a letter or group of letters make. A wonderful series of books to read aloud to your children.

My Pre-schooler love hearing Mommy & Daddy "mess up" while trying to read this tongue twisting first reader book. It's very funny - takes rhyming words and makes a game out of linguistic education. Starts out with "Fox in socks" and romps through to end with "tweedle beetle puddle muddle fuddle duddle...". The trip through is hilarious to kids and challninging to read to both kids and adults! When you can read it fine - try it faster! Hours of entertainment from three generations - fun to read or listen to it read....

This is a clever book full of tongue twisters, which can be enjoyed as an easy reader or as a read-aloud. The fox plies his friend Mr. Knox with tongue twisters (each accompanied by a funny illustrated scene) and Knox refuses to try them, but in the end Mr. Knox bests the fox at his own game. Children will enjoy playing with these silly words and silly scenes, all of which are defined by the easy reader's limited vocabulary. It's lots of fun, and this kind of wordplay may help open the mind to an appreciation of true poetry.

Being the oldest, I often had to read to my siblings when I babysat them. They got to choose the tuck-into-bed book. "Fox in Socks" was a favorite tongue twister to inflict on teenage-me, after all how often do the youngest get to control the oldest?

Now my baby sister has a baby of her own. Time for Christmas gifts from auntie! Revenge is sweet.

Fox in Socks is about a Fox who tells tongue twisters, and his tricks for your tongue are hard to say. But another character Mr. Knocks is smarter then he looks! Don't get me wrong. He is grumpy. Then he plays a good trick on the fox. At the end Mr. Knocks says goodbye. This book is good to test your tongue and for people who love Dr. Seuss!

My favorite part was when you get to the gooey goo page, and the first time you read it don't go fast! My favorite part was the gooey goo page because it's funny! Girls would be disturbed by the gooey goo, because it's gross.

I recommend this book to people who like Dr. Seuss's other book, Oh Say Can you Say! because this book's tongue twisters are a little easier to say. Uh oh! My tongue is twisted up, but since yours isn't, you need to go get this book!

Normally I wouldn't review a Dr. Zeus (as my father-in-law calls him) book. However this one has had my number for at least 20 years. Tonight though sports fans I was finally able to pitch a no hitter, bowl a 300, I shut out Dr. Zeus and had a quarterback passer rating of 158.3. Yes I made it through this entire tongue twisting nightmare sans one mistake. Now if I could make it through the Butter Battle Book without losing all hope for humanity I'll be a happy reader indeed.

This book is nothing more than a list of tongue twisters.

Each set of tongue twisters gets progressively harder and harder (not to mention more and more disastrous in the illustrations) until Mr. Knox throws his hands up in frustration, and it all starts over again.

Definitely read it before you read it aloud! I'd also recommend this book for the late stage of early readers - the words are just simple enough for them to actually be able to read them, while the wordplay is tricky enough to make it a really fun challenge.

There are a few minor concerns. First of all, the fox really is a nasty character, and uses language that I know some parents object to - calling Mr. Knox dumb, that sort of thing. And of course it shows some violence in the tweedle beetle battle.

This sort of thing doesn't concern me, but if it does concern you, as always, read before you buy.

There's so much silliness and tongue twisting going on in "Fox in Socks" that my 5-year old and 4-year old end up rolling around in their beds because they laugh so hard.

This is one of my sons' favorite bedtime books. Initially, the book provided new vocabulary but, now they have got the book nearly memorized, the main attraction is the tongue-twisting rhymes Mr. Fox delivers.

You can't read "tweetle beetle puddle paddle battle" without any seriousness and that's the point of Dr. Suess books. Check the seriousness at the door and dive into the silliness with your children.

I recommend you add these Dr. Suess books to your kids' bookshelf:

One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish
Green Eggs and Ham
Hop on Pop
The Foot Book
The Cat in the Hat

This is simply (actually, not so simply) the best beginning book ever for reading aloud!
Children learn to read by first hearing adults read aloud to them. The funnier and more memorable the story, the faster the child learns. In this outstanding book, Dr. Seuss has created delightfully convoluted tongue-twisters to engage enormous laughter, combined with lots of learning. You'll have a ball reading this book out loud, and hearing your child read it with you. Such experiences are great bases for building emotional support and comfort for your child, and establishing a lifelong closeness with your child.
What is absolutely brilliant about the book is that it creates forgiveness for any errors that occur. Mr. Knox, the person who cannot easily say the tongue-twisters, is the hero of the story. This, too, encourages learning. We are expected to mis-say these sentences. Reprieved by Dr. Seuss from the sentence of perfection, we go ahead with more confidence into our laughter.
Here's you first warning: "This is a book you READ ALOUD to find out how smart your tongue is. The first time you read it, don't go fast! This Fox is a tricky fox. He'll try to get your tongue in trouble." Notice, that since only your tongue can get into trouble, you as a person are safe. What a wonderful, loving way to encourage your child!
Your tongue also gets sympathy at the end. "How is your Tongue Numb?"
Everybody can handle the first page. "Fox Socks Box Knox" But it gets harder, "They call this a muddle puddle tweetle poodle beetle noodle bottle paddle battle."
Mr. Fox is good at coming up with challenges. Mr. Knox is quickly overwhelmed, and Mr. Fox comes up with a harder one each time despite agreeing to come up with an easier one.
But Mr. Knox comes out on top in the end. "When a fox is in the bottle where the tweetle beetle battles with their paddles in a puddle on a noodle-eating poodle, THIS is what they call . . . a tweetle beetle noodle poodle bottled paddled muddled duddled fuddled muddled fox in sox, sir!"
After memorization is quite far along, you can have races and time how long it takes to read the book. Children love to be timed doing things and take great pleasure in their progress. I suggest that you not race yourself, for that might discourage a child who goes more slowly than you do.
You can also use these sentences to point out how word order affects meaning. There are many advanced grammar lessons in this material, that will help you child write better.
In typical Dr. Seuss fashion, though, the drawings are the best part. You will see more complex, amalgamated images than you can possibly imagine, and each one visually reinforces the importance of word sequencing.
Having been challenged by this convoluted cove of cavernous cacophony, it will eventually occur to your child that reading such siblilant spoutings of stirruped stentorian sounds . . . is most easily done silently. So the learning to read process will naturally progress from the book's content. Yet, the silent reading will be predictably punctuated with great gales of laughter, built from the experience of reading the book aloud with you. You'll smile when you hear the familiar laughs.
As you can see, this is not so simply a brilliant book. It will provide your family with endless fun and learning.
After you have finished mastering this book aloud, I suggest that you and your child write your own version. You'll have even more fun with that one.

Ordered this book for my one-year old to add to the library. He loves the rhyming in the other books in this series and Mommy & Daddy’s sanity is wearing thin from re-reading them constantly. The tongue twisters are fun and had even us parents giggling. And we were extra delighted to discover that the first half of the book rhymes “Knox”, my son’s name!

This is a GREAT tongue-twister book for children still learning to read. Here's an example of what you will find.

New socks.
Two socks.
Whose socks?
Sue's socks.

As with most Seuss books the words the sentences start out simple and then get more complicated so that children can sort of 'warm up' to the reading. Here's a sample from later on.

Through three cheese trees
three free fleas flew.
While these fleas flew,
freezy breeze blew.
Freezy breeze made
these three trees freeze.
Freezy trees made
these tree's cheese freeze.
That's what made these
three free fleas sneeze.

(My tongue actually got tired--LOL!)

The Accelerated Reading (AR) designation for this book is 2.1 which means that it is essentially a book for beginning Second Graders. [It's fun for a whole range of readers though.]

Four Stars [B+] ::: Written at the 2nd Grade level, this Dr. Seuss book is great fun for anyone interested in tongue twisters.

The Rhyming Words
Do you like to read rhyming books? Are colorful pictures fun to you? I just read Fox in Socks a fun book to read. I love this book because it has a lot of rhyming words. Boy oh boy, this book is amazing. First of all it has a lot of colorful pictures. On page 34 and 35 it has a lot of blue goo and it's chewy and sticky too. There are a lot of pig bands. Dr. Seuss draws all of the colors . Beetles are fighting in a bottle, and a poodle is holding the bottle . Also Dr..Seuss uses a lot of rhyming words. Knox was in the box. Fox is wearing socks.
Fox in Socks is a cool book. This book is a read aloud. Don’t read too fast or your tongue will get twisted.

Judging by the wear on all my Dr. Seuss books, this one hasn't been read as much as most of the others. I think that's because the tongue twisters are too twisty and the illustrations are too busy.

I know that young children love words for the sound as well as the meaning. But it would take an adept reader to read some of these lines in a flowing way. Take this one: "Gooey goo/ for chewy chewing!/ That's what that/ Goo-Goose is doing./ Do you choose to/ chew goo, too, sir?/ If, sir you, sir,/ choose to chew, sir,/ with the Goo-Goose,/ chew, sir. Do, sir."

That is not the most difficult of pages, either. This book is labeled as part of the "I Can Read It All By Myself" series. But I don't think it's easy enough, nor interesting enough for young ones to stick with it. Try some of Seuss' other more suitable books for the younger age group who are just learning to read.

Dr. Seuss has created another entertaining children's classic with "Fox in Socks." The plot is simple: the clever title character dazzles his friend Knox with a series of increasingly complex tongue twisters. Along the way, Seuss reveals a number of fantastic images: a marching band in which all the musicians are pigs, a crow in a top hat, and more.
The book even has a touch of science fiction when the Fox introduces Knox to a weird lake of chewing gum-like blue goo. But it's the tongue twisting rhymes that are the central attraction of this book. By the time you get to the "muddle puddle tweetle poodle beetle noodle bottle paddle battle," you will certainly appreciate Seuss's writerly virtuosity. This is a fun book, and the Fox earns his place alongside Seuss's most memorable characters.

This is my favorite Dr. Seuss book because of the tweedles beatles in the beatle battle, in a puddle, in a bottle, on a poodle with a paddle... and the poodle is eating a noodle. It's always made me laugh. I bought this to read to my daughter.

Also, my mom use to always yell to us kids as we walked slowly, "C'mon slow joe crow!" that is also from this book.

Nostalgia at it's finest!

I bought this for my niece who fell in love with her book board version but wanted the full version when she found out there was more too it. She has absolutely loved it so far, especially her mom when she saw there was an cd with it, and asks me to read her "Knox in Box" a lot of the times I go over.

We love this book, it's an absolute favorite. We've been reading this one since our child was a baby. Once you get the tongue twisters down, you can have A LOT of fun reading this book, and your little ones will request this book be read A LOT! I highly recommend this book for babies, toddlers or early readers, fun for all.

This board book makes no sense! While the original Fox in Socks follows two characters as they tackle more and more tongue twisters, this board book just eliminates about half of their dialog and a few of the harder twisters. Where's Luke Luck and his Duck that lick lakes? Where is old Joe Crow? Why only half of the poodle noodle battle? What about Bim and Bin's Big Pig Broom Bands? Don't get this book. Pick up the beginner's library version if you are pressed for cash, but DO NOT BUY the board book.

Dr. Seuss once again proves that rhyming tongue twisters repeated over and over and over again will help my child learn to read and associate words and sounds and drive me nuts in the process. It was worth it. Thank you.

This was the funniest book I have ever read. I found it in the Doctors office and was going to check it out for my grandsons to see if I needed to order it. I sat in the office and laughed out loud, then came home and ordered the book. My daughter and son in law are also delighted with this book and enjoy reading to the grandchildren.

Our son always cracks up when we read this book together - he has taken to memorizing some of the funnier lines, and says them faster than I can read them! I even took this book to my son's pre-school to read to his class - they loved it. Can't go wrong.

Fox in Socks has found a place in my "Dad's Bag 'o Tricks." Whenever my 6-year-old son is grumpy, all I have to say "Let's have a little talk about tweetle beetles" and his frown quickly turns into a smile. Nobody can be in a bad mood for long when you hear "a muddle puddle tweetle poodle beetle noodle bottle paddle battle"! It works wonders at the end of a stressful day, too. Read Fox in Socks out loud to your kids and everyone will be giggling in no time!

My son read this book at the barber shop and loved it so much we ordered it for him. It is a great way to teach word recognition and promotes fast reading so they practice, then they enjoy challenging the whole family to read the book. As a homeschool mom I appreciate any book that encourages my boy to read! Love that Dr. Seuss

Dr. Seuss's Fox in Socks is easily the most entertaining children's poetry book there is. An absolute must for Seuss fans, young and old! Read it aloud to your kids, preferably as fast as you can - and you'll all giggle 'till your tummies hurt.

Every time I read this book to my young son I challenge myself to read it without getting tongue tied. Invariably I fail, what with all those tweedle beetles and pig bands. This book is truly a joy to read.

The Fox is certainly a better vulpine than I am, given that I couldn't stand running around with socks on my feet.

This incongruity is perhaps part of why I found this book highly amusing as a very young kid, so, a good fun production by Seuss.

There can be no better way to increase a child's confidence in his use of language than playing games with words.
Dr Seuss' "Fox in Socks" will take children on a voyage. They will giggle with all the words that rhyme. They will laugh at all the words that spill across the pages, and they will start to see that even nonsense words can sometimes be something special.
Children will learn that a few simple words can be put together in endless combinations. They will see that language can have structure and a story can be built upon the simplest of ideas.
Dr Seuss gets us to focus on and practice all the tricky sounds that make up our words and sometimes cause us to be lazy with our speech. He takes us from a "quick trick brick stack" to one made of blocks, chicks and clocks.
Lots of little tongues have trouble pronouncing Ls. Let them loose on Luke Luck likes lakes".
On a more serious note it could be expected that children who occasionally stumble or stutter with their words may benefit from immersing themselves in the wonderful world of Dr Seuss' "Fox in Socks".
The pictures, once you get to know the style, really grow on you. You just have to keep coming back for more.

A friend of mine turned me onto this. I love it because it's funny, makes you laugh, and as a fantastic side benefit... will make you a great spoken word reader. I had problems reading sometimes in that I would occasionally stumble over words. After reading this aloud a few times, I notice I'm much better-- I probably only stumble over words about 20% of what I used to. And that's a great side benefit from a children's book!

I ordered this book for my son and it came with no cartridge and I can't play it in the machine. It is not worth anything and since I'd not bought them before I didn"t know what to buy. Not very pleased with that.

I bought this and it did not come with the cartridge, needless to say my son saw it and I had to explain to him that we had to send it back. Please make sure before you purchase this that it comes with the cartridge. Unfortunately the seller did not specify, so I guess it was my fault for assuming.
