I startted this book late at night with the thoughts of just a few relaxing minutes of reading before bed. my few minuutes turned into a few hours - i couldn't put it down. This book was not at all what I expected. I am not normally a fan of paranormal romances but this book proved to me an extraordinarily well written. I won't disclose the premise of the book but it was filled with twists and turns. I am a new MK Harkins fan.

The Reader
By M.K. Harkins
Pages: 260
First person pov

This is the first book I have read read by M.K. Harkins and really enjoyed it from the first page to the last.

A young girl shot and left for dead washes up on a deserted beach with no memory of who she is or how she ended up getting shot, going by yep handsome men promising her safety, lost and nowhere else to go with gunshots in the distance getting closer, who wouldn't want to be saved.

Once saved everything looks a little good and of course it is. She finds out the people who saved her have special abilities they called themselves “readers” and they believe that she is the one everyone is after “the choose one” to save the war, but can she really do it but who is the real villain?

One thing I would've liked to see is a little more romance, but I'm sure it will come with the love triangle developing. Who doesn't love a good and bad boy fighting over you.

I would recommend this book with a nice glass of white or a big coffee, so put your feet up and enjoy the ride of “The Reader”.

The YA paranormal romance is dynamic and riveting. Harkins does a fantastic job creating this universe and developing relatable characters. I thoroughly enjoyed the pace of the writing and the detail throughout. It is a very well thought out book and plot and is one I will definitely recommend to others.

I loved it from beginning to end. Loved the plot and the characters were great. Ann, the heroine, even with her memory loss she was upbeat and had a great sense of humor, Lucy was lighthearted and lovable and Devon was very strong and brave. They were all great. There were a number of unexpected moments and I can't wait for the next.

If you haven't read many YA dystopian novels, this would be a pretty good starting point. The plot is interesting, the characters are likable, and the author does a good job of introducing the world in which the characters live. But if, like me, you've read more dystopian novels than you thought could ever exist at one time, you'll be able to see every plot twist in this story from a mile away.

This was a complexity book that had you guessing at every turn! I love that about it...it made me laugh, Cry, Swear and reread again. The characters aren't always what they appear to be, and I'm in love a little with Archer...I love how the Author summed it up...forgiving or at least giving redemption to the so called "bad guy"? But its to complex for a label of black &White like that...and I'm glad the Author noted it...we'll worth the read..

This sounded really interesting and as I started to read it I was pulled in. However, it quickly became predictable. Just like the 2 main guy characters Devon the broody one and Archer the sweet and nice one. I could see from a mile away which one would turn bad. It wasn't a surprise for me at all. I liked Ann and Lucy very well. I liked all the characters actually and thats rare. This was definitely different and I wish it had more depth. This really could have been a novel if the author added a little more to it. I dont know if there are plans for more or a series. I dont like how the last chapter was written. The last chapter revealed everything pretty much all at once kinda. I mean we already pretty well knew but still it was weird how it just was thrown all out there at the last when I am used to gradual revealing. Since it was so predictable it didnt bother me too much just enough to say something. I dont read many YA because they really can come off as juvenile. I didnt feel it was. I kept forgetting she was 18. There were times she felt older but she really wasnt. So thats a good thing. Overall its an ok book.

A fantastic concept for a book. Writing is fast and interesting. Many twists and turns but written so you can keep up with them. This author knows how to please an audience and keep them involved. Looking forward to more along the same vein.

***I would like to thank Netgalley and CreateSpace Publishing providing me with “The Reader” for free, exchange for a honest review***

We start right off with action scenes. I was confused from the start right along with Ann. However, it was ok because it gave me more of an insight into Ann’s issues. There are hints threw out the story of what will happen and why it all does happen.

This is a wonderful thriller young adult fantasy that keeps you reading while you try to figure out what really happened to Ann. One of her very first memories sys the pace for the story. If you enjoy not know what will happen. I recommend getting The Reader.

The Reader by MK Harkins is a wonderful Young Adult story about Ann Baker, who wakes without a memory on a cold beach.

MK Harkins creates a wonderful world where there are more races than just Human on Earth, and they exist in the background, battling for control. Right up to the end, you are unsure who is on the right side (or even which side is the right side).

The characters are written so clearly, you fall right into the story, and in fact, I had difficulty putting it down.

Solid 5-star read.

Wow! A totally awesome book! This was a great story with a vivid and intriguing cast of characters. Yes, this is a YA book, but age has nothing to do with the enjoyment of it. It was stellar. Well done!

This book started out great. I liked the premise and, because it said "Book 1", I was excited that it was part of a series. The story flows nicely at the beginning and the world and character-building is good. What I didn't like is that the 2nd half of the book and all the way until the end felt rushed and thrown together which I didn't understand as she could've carried a lot of the story over to the 2nd and subsequent books in the series. It felt like the book was being forced into a resolution and nothing really made sense or was developed enough to keep the story flowing. One minute the story is building and the next someone is dead, someone is in love, a war (???) is fought and the story is over. I was thoroughly disappointed that I even wasted the time getting into the story just to have it fall flat like that. I gave it 3 stars because the writing was good and I liked half of the book...but I really feel that it is a waste of a read overall.

Oh, my goodness!! This book was truly amazing. Seriously captivating. The world building was perfect, the characters!... I could go on about them for days. Especially Devon. Ann was the perfect main character; extremely relatable.
I usually wait between books so I can get back to life for a while and get stuff done, but as I'm finishing this I'm already thinking about the next book. I'm so excited!!

Can I just say one thing? I loved this book! Fast paced, full of suspense and a cute YA romance that had me turning pages till the end. I found my new book bf and his name is Devon. *sigh*

The story is captivating, the characters fun, and the plot is full of twists and turns that make this one of my favorite reads.

This book was.... AMAZING! I loved the characters and all the twists and turns! I gave this book a five start because it deserves it! This author can write! I only caught a few mistakes in the story-which every story has at least one.

I will totally be buying book two when it's available! Great job Ms. Harkins! Good job!

I've just started reading and - whoosh - I'm done. That's a good sign because it means the story has been so exciting I simply couldn't stop reading. There is action, there is love, a lot of sexy boys and a whole new species, the Readers, to discover who are not far from a war with the Jacks, an envious people wreaking havoc in the human world.
In the middle of it all is Ann. She can't remember anything, is found and rescued by two handsome lads, Archer and Devon, one likable and warm, the other clearly bad boy material, who seem to know her quite well. They both compete for her affections from the start, although in their own special way. I love the brooding, sarcastic, hard to reach guys in books, so I had a favourite right away.
The story is told from Ann's point of view, so you are just as clueless and mystified as she is, grabbing for every tiny bit of new information, trying to get what the hell is going on and which role Ann is playing in all of it. Quite an important one as it turns out. But with her memories lost, everyone around her knowing more about her than she does herself, her upcoming mind-reading abilities and a strange voice in her head warning her in some situations, it is very hard for her to trust anyone around her. I've started feeling just as paranoid as she had been. Jealousy and betrayal seem to lurk behind every corner. I liked the tense atmosphere that was created through that.
I just wish that the author would have kept the slower pace of the first half of the story instead of rushing into things, losing a bit of credibility and depth on the way. She could have gone deeper into the specifics of the Readers, Jacks, Seers and the dynamics of their relationships, because their conflict felt quite shallow in the end.
In addition to that, I wouldn't have minded a sad ending here, never thought I'd say that, but it would have made the book even better, leaving on a bittersweet note.

All in all, it was a very exciting read. There is a scene in the end that hints at a sequel. I would certainly read it because I hope to be sucked deeper into the world of the Readers, something that came a bit too short in favour of a faster pace and more action. But I can still highly recommend this book.

M.K. Harkins wrote a great story with The Reader. Ann wakes up alone, wet, and with no memory. She comes across two guys, Archer and Devon. As she gets to know them she hears a voice always telling her stuff, giving her bits of her memory back, at least she thinks. While speaking with Archer, trying to remember, well anything honestly, a memory pops up of her being told “You’re special. We have to protect you.” As she recovers from being shot and learning who she can trust she learns a lot of important details about who she might be, and that scared her, a lot. The way M.K. Harkins wrote this story sucks you in then adds small amounts of detail to keep you hooked throughout the end. There is no sex involved so it is ok for teens, there are some mild violence scenes but otherwise it is a good YA book and doesn’t need to add those parts to make it interesting. Ann is a strong lead character and while she may have a few “weak” moments she always does what she thinks is right. She has to decide what she think is right vs wrong, who to trust, and ultimately what side she wants to be a part of when the war comes. Archer and Devon are cousins and best friends, they do almost everything together, until they come across Ann, she complicates things for them, they both like her… Which one will she choose…
