Awesome book -- each one in the series keeps getting better. and better. Since many of the characters do come in and out.... it would be very good for the reader to start at the beginning and read each one through. Hubby has read all twelve -- I'm on number 9.... can't wait to get through them all and then I will regret that as then they will all be read. I anticipate I will read the whole series again in a couple of years - the stories and writing is that gripping! C.J. Box is an OUTSTANDING writer!

I read all the (current 12) Joe Picket novels during the summer, and that must mean something.
They vary somewhat in quality, they are not Nobel prize winners - but all very entertaining. This is one of the best ones, in my opinion. I look forward to the future series (I'm sure its coming) with his daughter Sheridan in the lead.

What can you say about the Joe Pickett series but that it keeps you interested. Box does a great job creating characters and story lines. Box gives enough details so that you can rad the books out of sequence.

An OK read. Predictable, but written with some skill. Exposition lacking from previous books in the series. Some characters are well drawn while others are a bit shallow. I doubt I will try another in the series.

King Lear, move over Opal Scarlett is in charge. In the latest Joe Pickett novel, latest that I've read that is, Joe Pickett is being plagued by an insane killer who targets Joe and his family for an imagined wrong. Complicating the situation is the disappearance of Opal Scarlett, the matriarch of a wealthy family who has spent her life, controlling the area and playing her sons against each other. Further complicating Joe's situation is Randy Pope, a total incompetent supervisor and micromanager. A career Republican ass kisser, Randy is out to get Joe, because he continually delves into situations and despite solving crimes, Joe makes a mess of Randy's paperwork. It is another great story, of Wyoming, with all the conflicts that stir the state, the constant warfare waged by naturalists and environmentalists against the oil and gas lobbies and big money ranchers and of course those who profit from the sportsmen hunters who enjoy killing wildlife.

Joe Pickett seems to find trouble, or rather, it finds him. He never seems to keep to his scheduled work, he makes enemies, but has a nose for things not quite right, and won't let them rest. Good reading, couldn't wait for the next volume.
