And I was rather dissapointed by Judith McNaught's latest offering. What happened to the author we used to know and love? The one who penned such classics as _Whitney, My Love_, _Almost Heaven_, _Until You_, and _Paradise_? The whole book seemed rushed and had a "hurry, hurry" attitude about it. It seemed as though they were all rushing to some fabulous climax, but everything falls flat with a big fat splat. Sloan and Noah's relationship never really left the ground, and I never saw more pass between them then some lust. There was no true love, and I was left wondering if Ms. McNaught had some past experience like this, and _Night Whispers_ is a bitter diatribe. But, reading this, you're probably wondering why I still gave the book four stars. I did that because it is still a decent book, and I found some aspects of it delightful. For one, the rest of the Maitland family is a hoot. Courtney with her own sense of style and Mr. Maitland and his attempts at flirting. Also, the secondary characters added spice to the plot and detracted from the somewhat bittersweet romance between Noah and Sloan. And, the only reason I have such critisism for _Night Whispers_ is that Ms. McNaught has penned such wonders in the past that I expect a tinsy bit more of her then of other authors. But, compared to some books that I can mention, _Night Whispers_ is by far the best. So, if you're looking for a romance that is higher then most and if you havn't read a McNaught before, you might try _Night Whispers_. But for devoted fans, I suggest you skip this read.

This book was a huge dissapointment. After having read books from JM like "Perfect", "Once and Always", "A Kingodm of Dreams", and "Until You" I expected more character development. Noah Maitland had a cool first name but that was the only arresting quality this hero possessed. For a multi-millionaire, he seemed awfully bland. Why would Sloan fall for him? Compared to Zach, Royce, Matt, or even Cole from "Remember When", he was sadly one-dimensional. As for Sloan, did she forget she was a cop once she hit Palm Beach? Her profession was only briefly mentioned once she met her family, (which was ironic since her training as a police-person is what prompted Paul to recruit her). And what happened at the end? Did she give up her career to be a happy house-wife? I can't remember if her career was even addressed at that point.
I enjoyed some things about this book. I loved the character of Sloan at the beginning of the book. She was lovable, bright, dedicated, a role model as the town's only female cop. I enjoyed her interactions with Sara and Jess. I LOVED the characters of Sara, Jess, Courtney, and the great-grandmother. I was MAJORLY disappointed that the story between Sara and Jess was resolved in such a wimpy manner. There was more chemistry in their one quick kiss than in all the love scenes between Sloan and Noah later on in the book. I sincerely hope that JM plans to write more about Sara and Jess someday. Here's hoping her next book is better than this.

Great mindless entertainment! I love the mix of romance with a mystery to solve. The characters were interesting too. The old grandmother was a hoot and Courtney was great! But there was something missing between the two main characters. As another reviewer stated, there were lots of relationships that weren't fully developed. It wasn't one of her best works. But it was still a fun read.

This story is about a police woman, Sloan, who agrees to visit her wealthy father (whom she had never met) in an effort to help the FBI gather evidence against him for laundering. The majority of the story takes place while she is staying at his mansion.
There are many slow parts in the novel, but overall it is a well-developed, sweet story about family, love, loyalty, trust, and deception. I enjoyed all of the characters and halfway through the novel I knew this book would be a reread. The romantic aspect of the novel was sweet, but I wish McNaught would have spent more time with the couple. The courtship was satisfying, but once the couple got together, there scenes were few and far between.
I'm surprised at the poor reviews. I thought this was one of McNaughts better contemporaries. :) Other good ones by McNaught are REMEMBER WHEN & EVERY BREATH YOU TAKE.

A very nice love story, but not McNaught standards. It is just not "fleshed out" sufficiently. When I remember "Paradise"! Every character breathed, lived, had motivations of his own.
Here, I still don't understand Paul Richardson (he has sweet moments, but he never really becomes a person, and his motives for again - he was the detective who ruthlessly used a young woman in "Perfect", too - using someone so carelessly are never spelled out). His romance with Paris is never described, it would have been so nice to know more about that instead of just finding out that it happened. I miss the development of the romance between Noah and Sloan, except for two, three nice scenes it all happens in a few sentences where she thinks how nice the last ten days were. Noah never really becomes a person to me either (how I nostalgically remember Zack from "Perfect" or even Cole in "Remember When"), Noah is just a black and white sketch compared to their color photographs. The villain and his motives are also just quickly stated, that is not exough for me. And the love affair between the older couple would have been so nice to read about, instead of just hearing it happened in the epilogue. Finally, Sara and Jess deserved some more space, too.
I feel more and more that McNaught is publishing books that are not finished, really. If she had taken the time to "flesh out" this lovely story, to make it some 200 pages longer, it would have been wonderful. This way, it is disappointing - please, wait for the paperback!!

I purchased my book through the Doubleday Book Club (sorry the store, it will never happen again), and I thought they were beginning to abridge their books. This book only had 54 chapters, and compared to the 87 in Perfect, it was very short, and felt like entire chapters were missing. There was virtually NO character development in the male lead, Noah. All I can tell you about him is that he's rich and gorgeous. One thing that makes Ms. McNaughts books stand out is the rich character development. By the end of one of her novels, I'm usually so wrapped up in these peoples lives, I don't want the book to end. Well, this book ended, and I thought, "that's it?" There was a wonderful opportunity to have a couple of great subplots in the characters of Paul and Paris, and Jess and Sara, but they just fizzled out. I don't understand it. The writing itself was pure Judith McNaught, but it was as if she shortened it to make a deadline, or wrote it in a hurry. Usually, I feel great after I finish one of her books, historical or contemporary. But this time I just felt cheated. Please Judith, if you ever decide to have a go at this story again, tell us more! You're one of my favorite authors, but Night Whispers just didn't measure up. If there are some missing chapters somewhere in your computer that didn't make the final cut, please put them back in. I would relish this story if it were only more complete.

This is my first book from Judith McNaught and because I hate to read even the back cover before starting in fear of ruining the plot, I was definately pleasantly surprised by Night Whispers. I actually found myself laughing at some of the dialogue and I really enjoyed the characters she created.
Since you can read other reviews to find out more about the plot line I'll give the basics. Sloan Reynolds is the main character who happens to be a beautiful police woman. Her father whom she has never known calls her and invites her to Palm Beach for two weeks to get to know the family. Sloan debates about it and decides to go. What follows is a story about getting to know a long lost sister, falling in love and being involved in an FBI investigation.
The chapters went by very quickly and I hated to put it down to go to sleep. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and would definately love to read another book by Judith McNaught.... especially if it is true that the other reviewers seem to think.. that this isn't her best because it was still very entertaining.

Just finished reading 'Night Whispers'..thoroughly enjoyed it, but not as much as 'Paradise'. The characters were wonderful in this book, especially Sloan & Paris and,of course, Noah & Paul. I must say though, I felt a sense of 'dejavu' when Noah hung up on Sloan when she called from jail and near the end of the book when she says goodbye to Noah on the boat. Noah's actions were very similar to Clayton's in 'Whitney My Love' and Sloan's actions (when she was saying goodbye to Noah on the boat) were very similar to Whitney when she confronted Clayton by the fireplace in his mother's home. Correct?? Of course, as Whitney My Love is my FAVORITE book...this was ok with me. This is worth reading year after year!!!

Judith McNaught is one of my favorite authors. Night Whispers is worth reading, it's a good book, but not her best. I would still like to know what Noah Maitland does for work exactly. The reader is left in the dark about details of his occupation.

I disagree with reviews saying that the title is misleading. "Night whispers" in this story symbolize all the secrets that caused Sloan many misunderstandings, and "night whispers" at the end turn into happiness (you have to read the last page to see this). I laughed so hard at the fifteen years old Courney and what she said. I read "Some one to watch over me" before and I am glad to see that she is in this book too. The romantic element does not shine as bright as other books by McNaught... but that is McNaught standard. I would have given this book 5 stars if it were by another author.

I love Judith McNaught's writing ~~ but this book is definitely not one of her better novel. Don't get me wrong, this is perfectly entertainable and wonderfully written, and it's great for a beach read ~~ but it's not her best novel.
Sloan is a police officer in a small Florida town ~~ separated from her father and sister ever since she was an infant. One day she receives an invitation to meet with her father, a world-known socialite and her sister, Paris. She wasn't planning to go till the FBI agent persuaded her to go, taking him with her. And that is when the story starts.
It is a sweet story ~~ but not very suspenseful and not very intriguing ~~ but still, you find yourself reading it anyhow since Judith manages to snare you into the story. It's a sweet novel.

Judith Macnaught is a stunning Storyteller especially when the Night Whispers Silence at midnight with its enthralling, masterful plots creating suspense. It has been great reading this book endlessly as it heads like a series of Stunts in the Bond movie Die Another Day. Judith's books are all Romantic filled with suspense leaving readers awed. The mystery shrouds around Sloan Reynolds whose upbringing was away from her family who suddenly invites her and she enters into her father's life when the FBI Agent Paul informs her that her father and his associates are suspected of fraud and murder. She hides her true profession and meets Noah to whom she is attracted and passes through a maze of deceit and passion as the story goes on. Quite capturing book, witty and romantic filled with plots. Night Whispers is jes a Superb Book - a wonderful love story, fast paced and a great page turner, my Pick for sure:-)

I remembered Noah Maitland's name from another of her books (I hope) so that was fun. Several times (3) the characters names were mixed up (bad editing guys) so it was confusing for a bit. Always enjoy her books and even bought this one in hardback. Worth the read but not as intense as some of her others. I'll read them all and so should you if you love Judith McNaught. Editors take note of the 3 errors. Ugh.

After reading this book, i felt that it should have been more of a suspense or action story that was just riddled with elements attraction between the protagonists. i was very disappointed with this because there's not enough romance between Noah and Sloan. i suppose ms. mcnaught thought that venturing a bit into the action/thriller genre could prove just as rewarding as writing exclusively on romance. but personally, i really disliked the outcome of this story. the deep and heart-wrenching emotion that is ms. mcnaught's signature writing is simply lacking here.

I have read almost all of Judith McNaught's books (my favorites are Once and Always, Paradise, and Almost Heaven), and after reading Night Whispers I have to wonder what has happened to my favorite romance writer. I don't know if you'd even call this book a romance novel. The relationship between Noah and Sloan (as soon as I saw that name I had a bad feeling) was extremely under developed. This book seemed to concentrate more on discovering who the killer was than their relationship. Compared with her other books, the emotional quality of this one was very lacking. It was like, "Hey, let's go have meaningless sex even though we don't care about eachother!" I think that Judith McNaught should stay out of the romance/mystery genre and revert to her earlier style of writing. This book was disappointing to say the least, and I would not recommend it.

In this gripping tale of murder and betrayal, a policewoman, Sloan Reynolds, has never met her father and sister, Paris, until she hears that her father and his associates are suspected of fraud, conspiracy, and murder. Sloan agrees to enter into her father's life while hiding the fact that she is a cop to try and get the goods on her father. Sloan must maneuver through a maze of deceit and passion to try and find someone who she can trust.
Night Whispers has too many characters, and a lot of the storyline is left open. The biggest disappointment was to pull us into a relationship between Sara and Jess and leave it undeveloped. Noah's history needed more exploration than it got.
Judith McNaught has had eight New York Times Bestsellers and more than Twenty million books in print.

I enjoyed this book, and Judith McNaught is one of my favorite authors. My thoughts are that there could have been more indept relationship between Noah and Sloan. There was not enough fire and desire involved that is usually typical between couples as in other McNaught books. The other characters in this story are so enjoyable that the lack of more fire and desire make this good reading. McNaught has never disappointed me as a author, and even if this book is not up to books of hers in the past this is still a keeper for me. I am too devoted a fan to let one, not so hot book, keep me from eagerly anticipating the release of her next manuscript.

Judith McNaught is an author I always enjoy but I have to agree with so many others who reviewed this book that it was not up to her usual standard. She completed the book without truly letting the reader know what Noah's career involved. The biggest disappointment was to pull us into the relationship between Sara and Jess and then leave it undeveloped. Why............ It was also too difficult to believe that no one would have checked into Sloan's career before she showed up in Palm Springs. In spite of the disappointments, 'Night Whispers' is still worth reading. Judith McNaught at 80% is still far better than many romance writers.

Judith McNaught is one of my favorite authors. I love her heroes and her heroines, and her plots are always great. Whereas this book is a very good read, it lacks some indefinable magic that McNaught has always been consistent to deliver until now. The plot is good, the characters are good...it just seems as if she's getting tired of trying to tug your heart-strings. Anyway, it's worth the paperback price, but not the hardcover. Whereas I enjoy contemporary romances as much as I do historicals, I must say that I wish she would start turning out more historicals again---I think she always did them best. I would buy her previous historicals in hardcover---in a heartbeat!---but I wish I hadn't bought this one quite so quickly.

After Whitney, My Love, Judith McNaught became my favorite author. When I saw that her most recent novel had finally made it to paperback, I grabbed it and ran to buy it. I was practically salivating by the time I sat down and almost reverently open the book to read.
Yuck. What happened to the Judith McNaught who created characters and situations that made you cry? The plot had potential. This novel didn't even touch that potential.
What "Night Whispers?" Did I miss something?
Shame on you, Judith. Please don't disappoint your loyal fans again.

I love Judith McNaught but as compared to her earlier works, Night Whispers doesn't even rate. Her main charater, Sloan is poorly built. Yeah, we all know that she's a police officer but... what else? What are her interests, etcetera? Noah wasn't built up well. We all know he's a billionaire but so...? McNaught's style is terribly lacking. At the start, Noah was cynical and arrogant... so how was he able to be kind-hearted and a lvoesick party only after one date? I think this novel is rushed and lacks the proper depth.
Judith McNaught, I miss your past works!!!

After reading some of the comments from others, I am left wondering if they read the book, Night Whispers by Judith McNaught or a knock-off book with the same title. I agree with "PatycakeOO-USA, , Night Whispers was "totally awesome" It had everthing in it that makes a GREAT NOVEL. I want to thank Ms. McNaught for sharing her incredible talent with us and showing that she is truly capable of writing "Best Sellers" again and again. I am eagerly waiting for Waters Edge and will be first in line when it is released.

The book was quite good. Judith McNaught did it again. Although, it seems that the ending came soooooo quickly. After she was "uncovered" it didn't seem to completely describe what happened to the characters. One thing that disturbed me, was that these characters (Paris & Sloan) are next generation characters from a previous book about their parents. That didn't bother me, but that I couldn't remember which book they were from did!! I'll definitely keep reading Judith McNaught's books.

I'm probably going to commit blasphemy with all the McNaught fans out there, but I don't think the woman can write a contemporary romance to save her life. This includes Paradise, Perfect, etc., etc. The plots are SO unbelievable and SO far removed from reality. Don't get me wrong, romance novels are intended to be entertainment but when I read a contemporary romance that has some outlandish plotting in it, I usually end up throwing it against the wall. McNaught's contemporaries UNIFORMLY have this plotting problem!!!!

After reading all the negative reviews on this site I have to say...I really wasn't expecting much. I'm a Judith McNaught fan but I don't really care for the "Thriller/Mystery" type of romance. I do LOVE all previous Judith McNaught novels though...so I thought I'd give it a try. I was VERY PLEASANTLY SURPRISED! In spite of the fact that this book contained "thriller/mystery" type elements I really liked the characters and the story line. I'M HAPPY I READ IT!!

Judith McNaught has long been one of my favorite authors of romance, and I truly love her books. However, I must agree that the story does not seem to have had enough time to fully develop. Sloan's story is well-developed, however, Noah's history needs more exploration. Despite that, it was a wonderful wonderful read that I finished in one reading because I just could not put it down!

A vast improvement from her last noval, Remember When, however this book is not in the same league as Paradise, Perfect, Something Wonderful, Once and Again, Whitney My Love etc. All these were excellent. Night Whispers had too many characters and too little real romance. Also what happens to Jess and Sara? All in all, this book is average, borrow it from the library.

I read all of Ms Mcnaught's writing repeatedly but this book. Very disappointed. I've waited so long after "Until You". You can write much better than this. I'm hopping for next!!! Don't let us down Ms Mcnaught. Please go back to your usual like "Whiney, My love", "Once and Always", "Kingdom of Dreams", "Almost Heaven", "Paradise", "Double Standard" and "Remember When". My favourite is "Whiney, My Love" .

I enjoyed reading this book, but was not impressed with it. It lacked the emotion and depth that McNaught is famous for. After reading novels like WHITNEY, MY LOVE, PARADISE, and UNTIL YOU, this book was a dissapointment to me, and as I've read, others as well. I'll look foreword to the hopefully soon return of my favorite author.
Please RateNight Whispers (The Paradise series)
1. I don't think Judith McNaught can actually write a terrible book. 2. Courtney was great and really kept Noah grounded. 3. Sloan had a mind of her own most of the time and she was really three dimensional. 4. The side characters and plots were all well written and interesting.
*Night Whispers* is really a good book, but it's not the best by Judith Mcnaught. If you want something better, try *Almost Heaven*, *Whitney, My Love*, and *Until You*
