Dovie is trying to keep going after her daughter and husband die. When the Brewers first turn up she just wants a hand on the farm, but the children soon become family to her.
The characters in this book are beautifully written. Especially that of Evalyn who is headstrong and tough on the outside but has a sweet and soft side she tries to hide.
Worth the time to read.

"Quail Crossings" by Jennifer McMurrain was a very good novels depicting the depression years and drought in Texas. It joins together a family that lost a husband and child in an auto accident with a family of four children, the oldest being 18 years, whose parents abandoned them. In the story, the reader experiences the emotions on both sides.

Woo enjoyed this. Good story about farmers families dealing with Times during the dust bowl era. Also about being able to move forward after loss of loved ones and having to open your heart and mind to

I just finished Quail Crossings and I really enjoyed it. I wish the character of Evelyn was a little more developed, though. She was a girl with problems and she was forgiven time and time again. I would have liked to know a bit more about the parents and why they abandoned their children. The author should consider doing a sequel and filling in some of the blanks. I would be interested in follow-up story.

Enjoyed reading it. As a child I often heard stories of the " dust bowls" of the thirties but never thought I would find a story revolving around them. I found myself there with them, especially with Dovie. I have now buried four of my five sons and she finally found the truth, as did I. What truth? Read it and find out.

Quail Crossings was one of those books that you wish would not end. The characters become like friends and you want to know the rest of their story. The story is full of funny and heartwarming scenes. I am looking forward to reading the next one in this series.

A touching, engaging story told so well I could feel the grit, and smell the breeze rich with the smell of animals and people learning the dance of family. I believe my folks are gathering round the table. Guess I had better get.

This was not exactly what I expected. Instead of being a historical depiction of the '30s, the theme seemed to be more of a religious nature. I did manage to slog through it to the end, but there was nothing in it that will stick in my memory for long.

This was an amazing story that covered the historical even of the dust bowl during the 1930's as well as characters that were so real. The author doesn't make the people in the story perfect. We see them with both their warts as well as their love. A 16 year old boy and his three siblings are deserted by their parents during this tragic time. This young man does outstanding job of raising his siblings. The boy is hired by a local farmer and the story plays out showing the caring side of humanity and what "family" really means. I read it in one day. I absolutely could not put it down and highly recommend it.

A wonderful series, I do recommend this book..I am now on book 2 and enjoying it as much as I did this one. I you want a nice easy read this is it. It does have a bit of suspense, you will want to know what comes next, but not a harsh book. It ends really nice.

Texas in the 1930s. Grief, compassion, the struggle to blend families, teenage rebellion and dust storms. This book offers a lot. It is a good story. It gives you a "fly on the wall" experience. You are there as an invisible observer.

Actually, three stars is a bit generous, but the book is likeable, just not the brightest penny in the pocket. We've all known people like that. We wouldn't want to say anything critical. They are what they are and that is exactly how we accept them to be. If you like Hallmark movies, you'll like Quail Crossings.

An OK read. I found the writing a little childish in places, more like an outline. It could have used more fleshing out in places. I also found the first part of the book hard to get into, it wasn't until the last part of the book that it started to hold my attention. A clean book to read.

I chose this rating because this book is a really good book. It has good family values, faith and hope. It is very refreshing to read a book that is not about killing or have sex scenes on every other page. I would recommend this book to any one over the age of 14. Very good book.

This first novel by by Jennifer McMurrain hopefully will will be the first of many. She writes a story set in the Depression era that is like you are right there living with the life like characters as they face the trials of daily life. An excellent read that is hard to put down.
I definitely will be on the lookout for book number two from this talented New writer.

What a wonderful story! I truly enjoyed this book. The 1930's dust storms are wonderfully depicted in this historical piece of fiction. The characters are well developed. It's easy to imagine being on the farm with this young family or feel the hurt of loss as Dovie did. Loved seeing the faith of these families as they struggled to survive in such hard times. Great story!

This was listed in Bookbub as Christian fiction, but I enjoyed it as it wasn't in your face like some. It was there but more like what was right for the 1930's. The characters were well developed and the story finishes in this volume.

A good family story that was easy to follow along. It was well written and the characters were very believable. I was sorry when it came to an end as I felt like I knew this family and wanted to know more of how their lives turned out.

Four children are left without parents and starving. During the dust bowl era their parents took off to find a living, leaving all their kids in the hands of the oldest boy who was just a young teen. A man takes pity on them, offering a job for the boy and takes them all in. His daughter, left a widow after an accident killing her husband and child, is furious with her father for doing this. She is still grieving and these children are an intrusion on her grief.
That's about all I care to say about the book. It seemed to be written for a younger age than adult, so I bored quickly. Childish. Too many other good books to read and review to write more.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading "Quail Crossings" because of its historical information, really. I have never learned of the dust storms so realistically. My parents lived through that time in western Iowa/Nebraska. Thank you!

I enjoyed getting to know the characters as the author wove a story that was heartfelt and lovingly told. I became very attached to the youngest characters and could empathize with what they had been through. It is a lovely journey to read a book that takes the reader through a time, place and situation that is brought to life so vividly.
I applaud the author and look forward to her next book.

Loved reading this book! From the beginning, it held my interest. Taking place during the depression, the story tells of love, kindness, forgiveness and the importance of family. Didn't want the story to end.

I love reading Christian novels. They always remind you about your walk with God. This is a good story about an 18 year old taking care of his three younger siblings. James provides Bill a job on his farm and allows them all to stay there. This is a story of healing, love and finding happiness. It was a great book.

I enjoyed this book. The characters had me caring about each and every one of them, including a cantankerous old gray goose named Norman. I think anyone who reads this book will enjoy it. I find that if the story is good and the characters are well written, I can overlook any typos or using the wrong word from time to time. Well done, Miss Murrain.

I will not attempt a book review, there are plenty of those. This book was a joy to read, good humor, and great characters. I love a good story told without profane language or details of sexual events. This book fits both of those and provides a page turning experience. Good job to Jennifer McMurrain.

This book will hold your interest until the end. It is one of those books you really don't want to read the last page knowing that is the end of the story. A simple story of love among a family and their new found home. There are no pages that you want to just skip. Keeps you guessing what will happen next. A book well worth reading
