Dust World (Undying Mercenaries Series Book 2)

With the exception of some repetitive character introspection, this was a well-paced, innovative continuation of the series. I enjoy Larson's writing style and plot development, his extrapolation of potential scientific advances, and his imagining of alien morphology and alien worlds. A good read.

B.V. can write. Undying Mercenaries is a 1st person novel that is jam packed with action (the whole series is), good humar, really well developed characters (B.V. excels at this) and some fantastically creative landscapes. Worth reading - hard to put down (like most of his books).

The adventure continues, lots of great surprises and twists and turns. The characters are still super really blend into the flow of the story. The author brings it all together from all points of compass in the battles and inter actions of all the unfolding situations with the characters.

I really like this series. The characters are consistent from one book to the next and are very well developed.
I enjoy the premises of the story. As my old electronics instructor would say, "works good, lasts a long time".

Everything just seems so "normal"; you almost forget you're reading SciFi. The characters are great and believable. The galactic system is believable. Motivations and actions all make sense and there are interesting ideas and suppositions like all SciFi should have.

Excellent continuation of Book 1. I like the new adversarial aliens, and their brand of evil. I hope they return in a future installment.

Looks like I'll be reading all four of the current books in this series in a row...

I really love this series. The revival machines provide many interesting plot points. The universe of this series is expanding and it's looking more and more interesting. I had trouble putting this one down, Larson does a great job of pace on this one.

2nd in the Undying Mercenaries Series(1st was Steel World) and another really action packed interstellar military tale unfolding the decline and potential destruction of Earth and every Terran in the universe by a gigantic Galactic Empire. Give them both a look.....

I like the characters in the undying mercenaries series. The underlying story line is well thought out. When the plot twists, it is a surprise, but consistent with the previous story line, not something way out of line. The story does not drag but is full of action.

Larson continuos to put out solidly good books that entertain. Some aspects are difficult to accept (in an SF novel who would have thought) like the primus. Her character is just to one dimensional so I just ignore her, but otherwise I really just enjoyed the pulp.

A-Grade fun! Gotta read it! (No big literary feat although the writer is an accomplished one. Good characteres, good situation, a bit on the magical side of life but fun anyway, specially for its price.)

Both "Steel World" and "Dust World" will capture your interest and carry you quickly into the alternate universe created by Mr. Larson. In his protagonist James McGill, he has created a likable but flawed character that advances the storyline in sometimes a mischievous manner. I look forward greatly to reading what this literal "loose cannon" does next.
Thank you Mr. Larson for your work to date, now get off of the couch and get writing!

Very engaging read. Brings back some of my boot camp memories plus puts the action in what I truly believe the world is coming to.
Apocalyptic and visionary as well. Still haven't finished it and hope there will be a sequel.

Four stars. That's a good rating for this story. Good action. Good characters. . Good story line. Did not try to out guess the author. Sat back and enjoyed the book..would like to see the hero get a Permotion rank and go to a developed world.

Plenty of action, it's a little offbeat and different from a lot of military sci-fi books. I look forward to next book.
I won't tell you the plot, you need to read this book but first read the preceding story in this series, both are great reads.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book in that it was a good winter read ( so are the other books in this series ). I would recommend this book on any evening when it's -10 degrees and snowing outside.

I didn't realize that Mr. Larson had continued the Undying Mercenaries series until yesterday. I immediately purchased and devoured this book.
I enjoy the writing style throughout, and while the characters are not necessarily gritty and realistic, I very much enjoy them. I look forward to future books in this series.

I found Dust World to be more enjoyable than Steel World. Mainly because of the broader reach of the plot. You can tell that massive events are starting to unfold. Not only that, but you get a better idea of the way the universe works.

Buy this series if you looking for a good, light read.

Although in "Dust World" the action takes place on different planets and the opponents that Earth's mercenary Legion Varus fights are different than those in volume one, "Steel World," in essence the basic plot in "Dust World" is really just a repetition of the basic plot in Steel World..

Can't help himself from speaking up, low ranking soldier James McGill disobeys orders, takes actions counter to policy, goes off in his own direction, has better strategic and tactical instincts than his officers, fights and dies and is reborn again, and conquers every woman he meets.

As in Steel World, in the end, McGill somehow manages--for the second time--to be instrumental in not only avoiding the destruction of Earth and the human species, but also manages, for the second time and again at the last minute--and seemingly by dumb luck--to fast talk the Galactic's officious, by the book clerks from the Naib race into a solution that both protects and advances the interests of Earth and human beings.

This second book in the series offers more opportunities to showcase the incredible fortune of McGill. There are a few logics inconsistencies in the book but overall this is a thoroughly enjoyable book and it is worth your time.

I really enjoyed the second book in the series, it's a. Rey quick read but enjoyable, it reminded me of the Sharp series by Cornewell ( best historical fiction out there) I think I will give his other series a shot while waiting for the third book to come out.

Both of the first two books in this series, Steel World and Dust World, are well-written science fiction in the old school style, with strong plots, interesting characters and just enough futuristics to make you want to escape into the universe the author has created.

Larson's toughest task may be to maintain the quality of these stories in the future, while trying to satisfy the demand for more from "legions" of fans.

Liked this one even better than the first- this series really sucks you in! Interesting scientific concepts and plot twists, non-stop action and believable characters- not great literature, but very entertaining!

A good read and an interesting, believable lead character. The action is good and consistent. The dialog follows and fits the plot without going too far. The aliens are fearsome or obnoxious and also fit the plot.

I enjoyed this book and it's predecessor.

This continuation of the series is very well written. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The characters are well fleshed out and you care about what happens to them. Excellent novel and can't wait for the next book in the series.

A sequel to STEEL WORLD with the further adventures of Legion VARUS and its complement of all-too-human foul-ups and even stranger aliens and another weird planet. Lots of action and high-tech weapons and starships. A great read.

Dust World is simply great. Finished it in 2 days. If you're a fan of the Star Force series, this is a new sci fi story that is completely different, but is just as exciting! I cannot wait for him to continue to publish new books in this series!

This book was better developed and more exciting that Steel World. Not quite a 5 star, but since I gave it a Steel World 4 stars I had to give this more stars, but I think 4.5 is a better indication of my feelings.

An enjoyable adventure just like the first. The main character, James McGill is truly entertaining with his cowboy attitude as well as his deeper, philosophical musings. I hope to experience many more adventures on many more worlds. Well done B.V. Larson.

Much better books than the last half of his other series, I really hope the author keeps going with this one. And doesn't fade out into crazy plot lines and puddle deep female characters like in Star Force.

Unlike the Star Force series, the underlying plot actually has depth to it. Star Force is driven by a lot of technology but little else of interest. The Undying Mercenaries series still has almost no character development to speak of, 1 dimensional enemies, and is getting formulaic but I'll forgive it for now because the universe that Larson has created this time around is turning out to be so interesting. This is the space adventure that Star Force should have been.

This is an excellent book for the action fantasy reader who likes the idea of leaving home and going to fight on a strange and ruthless world. I will recommend this book and the rest of the series to just about anyone as it is bound to make an impact on your view of how good a book can really be. I personally am a picky sort of reader who hates anything that isn't perfect and when I first found this series I could tell I was going to love it.

I can only hope someone in Hollywood has discovered this series.

If you like any of the warhammer 40k books. Or if you enjoy sci-fi in general , read this series.
James is the perfect , well , I guess anti-hero. But a guy I would want in the trenches with me. ( I wouldn't mind Carlos there as well ) Ha!

B. V. Larson may have turned this genre of science fiction on its ear. Military science fiction has a long history, but this may be the first time where our bloody mindedness is also Earth's saving grace!

B.V. Larson never disappoints! And this book is no exception. For the price, there isn't any reason not to like this book. I don't give a detailed synopsis of the book, I will let the more windy reviewers cover that aspect. Just my recommendation, buy it! Nuff said.
