Formula space opera. Officers on old ship facing unexpected attack by enemy forces. Usual personal stories of various characters. Space battles are ok, but nothing out of the ordinary. There are at least six similar series going as I write. Pleasent read, but not outstanding in any way.

As some other reviewers noted, this could be "Ark Royal 2.0", although, the original was a more interesting book. There's unfulfilled promise as several times, the plot line develops first one storyline, but drops it cold and moves on to another. The editing could also use some improvement. However, the story is interesting, the characters are not the typical one dimensional usually found in this genre.

There aren't that many books that actually get my emotions wholly involved, or my adrenaline going, etc. I REALLY enjoyed this book and there are so many possibilities for the characters into the next books. I definitely recommend this author, having started with his other series which I also love.
Shadow of Victory (Honor Harrington) :: In Fury Born (Fury Series Book 1) :: A Rising Thunder (Honor Harrington) :: A Call to Vengeance (Manticore Ascendant Book 3) :: A Call to Duty (Manticore Ascendant series Book 1)

This was a fast last minute buy for a read during down time in the back country. Almost better than the week spent in the mountains.
This is well written and very enjoyable story. Well look foreword to the next in the series.

It is a great opener for a trilogy. At times it seemed as though there was too much detail of a person's character than was put into the ship's character with all of it's foibles. The story line is good although expected. Still, I was entertained and am looking forward to the next chapter! Keep writing, practice is everything! ! !

I have read a couple of Glynn Stewart's book previously and enjoyed them. That's why I decided to try this one and found it also very enjoyable. I was not sure where the story was going at first, however, it soon became clear and one was off to the action.... l cannot wait to read the sequel.

I found this novel slow to start but highly enjoyable once it got going. The character development was somewhat stilted and forced in places but if the author is able to maintain the pacing in the next book I look forward to reading it.

This is the most complete story about the future. Though some of the science is from the authors imagination, it is presented that you can believe that it is real-it can happen. Characters are so good, developed. This is a wonderfully, fantastic story.

This was a good book with well developed characters. I would have liked to see a technical chapter, explaining the technology of this world, and a historical chapter, explaining the development of the different "countries".
Will look forward to the next book(s).

Rip roaring adventure. Glynn Stewart has crafted an excellent series. His characters are complete and evolving. Best of all he's not afraid to lose some of the protagonists when it's the right time. I found this and the 3 following book very enjoyable.

I really enjoyed this story. At first I thought it might just be a retelling of Battle star Galactica. This book is an original and stands on its own considerable merits. Excellent character development. The hero is not a super man, He has his flaws. I will be reading the rest of this series.

The plot bas some excellent potential if the author would invest a little more time into making
This book starts off with a large pile if characters, whose descriptions verge around their rank titles upon the ship. It becomes a bit of a point later on when their titles change, but it is manageable.
The core content of the book becomes very obvious halfway through as the plot is a series of dominoes, yet each one tries to be the "end all" domino and kind of wears out the threads.

A rousing space opera with well developed plot, believable characters, and lots of action. One of those all-too-few books that are almost impossible to put down. This book along with the first two Dutchy of Terra series make Glynn Stewart my new favorite author.

A surprisingly fun read. I'd been missing good old-fashioned "space opera" stories, and this does not disappoint. A bit trite and predictable in places, but overall well done. (Now almost finished with book 3, still enjoying the tale.)

So, I couldn't read this book fast enough. So many characters with their ien story with the bigger story. So many little twists and nuggets of information. You just have to force to read every page even when you are dying to know what is going to happen a couple of pages ahead. All in all, a great read and utterly enjoyable.

This book war part of the 'Star Heroes - 9 Novels of Space Exploration, Aliens, and Adventure'-bundle and I couldn't but it down - I finished it in one day and got the other books in the series right after that. In my opinion it's one of the best Sci-Fi series I've ever read. I finished book 2 and 3 and now look forward to no. 4!

I like to think I am well read and fairly smart. I also pay attention to tactics, strategy and science. This book gave me plenty of interesting turns. I also found the characters engaging and human. I find that rate and enjoyable in a science fiction battle book. On to the next one!

This beginning is the Avalon series reads more like a TV action show than a military sci-fires book. It takes a while to get started but holds the reader spell-bound from start to end. I recommend it whole heartily.

I read the ending of most books to keep from wasting time on a book that leaves a sorry taste. DON'T read the ending of this book first. A good story and an ending that is FANTASTIC, if not revealed too soon.

I enjoyed reading this book for a variety of reasons. There were no aliens it was humanity against humanity which is probably what will happen. The characters really were vibrant and believable. I really hope we see more of this series

I picked this up on an lark and enjoyed it more than I thought I would. There's a BSG, "oldest ship in the fleet" flavor to the front end, but it turns into something different by the end. Good, inventive space combat.

The build up of the characters into people you can relate to snd believe were really there. Being able to see through the written imagery and seeing the ship, feeling the crash, the heat. It was just good.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The story is well written. The author took the time to develop the characters which often doesn't happen with this genre. I will continue the series and would recommend this book.

Insane characters! Really, really, really good character studies along with a decent appreciation for the Military's "Culture." Everything was tied up in a bow at the end - can't wait for the next adventure...

Another enjoyable book from Mr Stewart. The story moved along and there were no slow spots. This is the second time I've read this book and it was just as fun to read as the the first time. I hope there is another book in this series in the future.

This is a good book and a good read. I've been reading for pleasure for over 60 years and this is as good a new author as I've found in that time. On the strength of this book and his "Starship Mage" series I have purchased everything else he has for sale.

Old spaceship on its last tour before going to the boneyard. Check.
Said ship being thrown into the middle of a conflict. Check.
Not a new story here, but a well done story with enough differences to keep it interesting. This story is more about the people and the conflicts they face. The ending feels rushed, but then I've become accustomed to multi book tales. Well worth a read.

Good story. It is only loosely similar to Nuttall's Ark Royal in that it involves a Space Carrier scheduled to be decommissioned after one last mission. The writing was good enough that my interest was maintained; I finished it in one day.

A nice sci-fi story in the old strategy beats braun vein. Some interesting characters and character interplay. The story is somewhat predictable but still satisfying in way a classic war movie or Clint Eastwood western is.

When reading, I can selectively edit extraneous writing. The audio read of this book, as I was travelling almost made me scream out loud at the crazy location/time titles read constantly for scene changes. Not a good thing. Cost the rating a star.

This one of the best sci-fi books I have ever read. I finished in less than two days because it held my interest so well. The characters are all perfectly believable and the pace is perfect. There are no slow or boring section to skim through. I would recommend it to any fan of space war novels.

If you liked the old Wing Commander novel series that went with the games, you will love this book. Reading it gave me flashbacks to days of reading those novels and playing the games. Mix in more science and move the plot 500 years into the future and bam, you have this book.

Very good space romp! I'm one of those people that believe that science fiction should have science in it, and this series has it. I can't say how believable the science is, but the author makes it hang together.

Story line is engaging . Prose is average. No character developement minimal world building. Had hoped for more from this book. The action is not good enough to cover the flaws. Will not be finishing the series.

I'm 30% into the book and bored out of my mind. How many space operas are centered on an aging starship about to be commissioned? There are a few, so NOT a novel concept.
The other thing is the screaming political correctness. You could almost keep a checklist of races included with each character. Bossy, tall handsome Caucasian: check. Muslim: check. Latino/Latina: check. African American: check. Lesbians: check. Once I realized that the cover should've included an "equal" sign, I lost interest. I was in it for a good read without all the bs we have to deal with in the news. The plot just wasn't enough to keep me interested.
That's what I felt, that's what I wrote here.

In 'Space Carrier Avalon', Stewart writes three-dimensional characters in a three-dimensional universe. The main character is honorable but flawed and therefore interesting, in no sense the cardboard hero seen in too much work of this kind. The universe is interesting and layered; the supporting cast and subplots are well-written and the plot is exciting, interesting and believable, right up to the smallest details of foreshadowing.
