Not really well written. It started off strong, then made a very amateur writing mistake in about the 7th chapter or so. At that point, the tension died, and I had a lot of trouble having confidence in the story from that point on.

The story is fun, though simply written. It almost felt like it was done quickly with not a lot of thought put into it. I don't think there was a main plot point, just a bunch of subplots to build into the series. Still, I enjoyed this quick read and will go on to book two.

Arrived on time, in better condition than described. However the story is incredibly boring lol. Might be good for a teenager who hasn’t lived any kind of life yet and feels plain and ignored when they aren’t lol.

I enjoyed this book enough to purchase the 2nd installment in the series. The introduction of the main characters allowed for a fully developed story without revealing too much at once. The world building was very strong as it laid the foundation for enveloping you into the charters struggles and the life they live. I especially adored how the main character Sofia got stronger over time and came into her own. I can't wait to see what happens in the next book.

Updated my review while reading the 3rd book. There’s effort and innovation there. I respect a writer who creates a unique world to their story. If you can get past the first book, it’s good & engaging. The writer got a lot more confident in the second book onward.

This book kept me captivated from start to finish, and I can't wait to start the next in the series! The whole idea of another world "The Shade" that the main character gets trapped and enslaved in by the vampires is intriguing and mysterious. Although it is a dark world, Derek, the Prince of the vampire world is changed and light is captured by his love for this one special girl. This book is just the beginning for a tumultuous love affair between a human female and the dark vampire male with a soft heart.
Highly recommended for a vampire love story, and again, I can't wait to delve into the next book to find out how this story of love and self discovery continues.

This is a short read, however, all the other book in the series are at least twice the length as this one.....This book is short and to the point in setting up the story line for all the other series....the other series go into more details....Each chapter is written from alternating characters which I like as you get to see into each characters mind....The sexual content in this book is not that graphic and they are short lived so no worry there, however, I would recommend the reader being 14-15 years old at least...I am almost done with book 2 and have purchased up to book 7....can't wait to finish them...

I found the plot to be interesting but patched together in a jumpy, all over the place kind of way. The characters were hardly introduced and left a lot of questions. The writing style was just ok, as it too was jumpy and abrupt. Like the author wasn't sure how or where the story was going. A good plot concept but the execution could have been way better.

This was nothing like Harry Potter to me. It lacked the magic. I would not want my teenage daughter to read this. There were depictions of murder and sexual assault. Definitely some Stockholm Syndrome going on here. The hero is good to the heroine, yet will drink the blood dry out of another human. So many mixed messages in this book.

Horrible series. Not well written, and the characters are not relatable. The main character has Stockholm syndrome. The male lead character is worse than Christian grey. This is not even comparable to twilight!

I enjoyed reading this book a lot. Sophia has been captured and now her only chance of survival depends on whether or not Prince Derek will choose her to serve him. Sophia might have been chosen by Derek but that won’t stop his brother Lucas from getting what he wants and he wants Sophia. After an unsuccessful attempt at escaping Sophia realizes that as much as she dislikes what Derek is, he may be her only chance at survival. I enjoyed all of the characters in the book and the ending leaves you wanting more. I recommend this book to anyone who loves a good paranormal read. I think if you have read and enjoyed The Captive Series by Erica Stevens you will enjoy this book.

This was typical teenager vampire fare. I was so unimpressed that I left it unfinished for several months & finally read to the end to keep it from popping up on my list of books I was currently reading.
This is not one I would recommend.

This is the worst of vampire stories. Boring, plodding, horrible characters, everything totally predictable. Heroine is stupid and, of course, gorgeous. Hero is stupid and, of course, handsome. She will convince him to give up his horrible ways merely with her beauty. Yuk. The worst. I had to start the book over the next morning because it was so bad, I couldn't remember it. Yep. It was still God-awful.

This is the only book I've ever thrown away.

When I first came across Bella's book, through an excerpt of the first 6 chapters she was giving away, I didn't expect to grow fond of the plot due to the amount of paranormal romance books out there, who pretty much say the same thing. Humans against Vampires, "Forbidden" love, Secret Society and so on.
Sadly, "A shade of Vampire" doesn't escape that category but it contains itself in a captivating tone which could even draw in a different audience than the one intended.
The only faults I would point out would be that it was too short and not as developed as it should be, if not for any other reason, then to just ensure that the book could find a greater acceptance outside the YA audience. To be fair though about the too short remark, the first book is about 150 pages.
I enjoyed reading it and I will most certainly go for its sequel.

I love vampires! I love the mystery and the power they exude plus, they're always so sexy! What I don't love is ever since that one series, so many authors have created copy cat books. Then H to the ELLO, Bella Forrest! Thank you for bringing some new love for vampires.
Oh how I love Derek, what a contradiction he is. He is exciting and terrifying but loyal. Wow, is he loyal; to his family to Sophia, to his word. I trust him. He is a force to behold when he rips your heart out while it's still beating because you dared to taste what is his. OMG seriously.

I can't wait to move on to book 2.

Unfortunately, I can't recommend this. Despite its popularity, it does nothing but promote abusive and dependent relationships. The main character is abducted to become a concubine, and despite being repeatedly assaulted by the vampire love interest, and violated by his brother, decides that she can't live without him. There's something wrong here if this is an aspirational read for young women

Loved the storyline , the characters, especially Derek and Sofia love and hardship with each other. I believe this book is right up there with the Twilight Series, and I can't wait to read the next one.

I ordered this book because I wanted a romance without sex in it. This is a fast paced book that gets to the point and doesn't linger so if you like books that our chapter after chapter of the same conflict getting resolved, than this book isn't for you. Each chapter keeps moving and progressing.
I'm a fast reader and when I got the book, I started it that night, and then during my lunch break I finished the book.
I loved it! Its really cute and makes you laugh, giggle and have a deep sigh of "why can't that happen". I really wish book 2 was out cause I really want the story to keep continuing.

I really enjoy read it, Bella Forrest is amazing writer.

This is the story about Sofia Claremont (human) and Derek Novak (vampire), she was kidnapped and give to Derek as a gift.
Sofia has to learn to live in a new world full of vampires and gradually become an strong girl. she outspoken and she is not afraid to Derek.
Derek is drawn to Sofia right from the start and doesn't want to hurt her. He is fighting with himself about it.

Is very interesting plot And the best is that alternate pov so we know sofia and derek thinking.

I highly recommend this book and looking forward to next book on the series.

Good characters and story line. Will need to read all three to get entire story,so not stand alone which is only fault if you don't want to buy all three. Liked the twilight series which is why I bought first one. Enjoyed it.

Probably good for teens, however, being a 24-year old female, I found the writing and plot to be too simple for my taste. Also, for someone having Stockholm's syndrome, the character development was poor IMO. There was no build-up of the plot OR characters, which I feel would be necessary for a truly successful story. I will not be continuing the series.

I will say that Bella does have quite an imagination, though, and that's always important as an aspiring author!

Wow. I'll admit I was duped into purchasing this one after seeing the "If you like....then read this...". I also was lured in by the many positive reviews. After reading it however, I was floored by how awful it was. While it wasn't the absolute worst thing I've ever read, it is pretty close to t the top. I trudged through it even though it was a short read. I found myself looking for anything to distract me from reading it sometimes but because I paid for it, I felt the need to finish it. The writing is atrocious, almost as bad as the 50 Shades trilogy (also garbage) that's why I'm giving it a two and not a one star rating. I wish I could've gotten a refund and I cannot imagine reading (let alone paying for) the multiple continuations of this story line.

I picked up this book thinking that it would just be another teen vampire romance novel... but I couldn't be more wrong! This story is amazingly written filled with twists, dark and sinister characters, fear, drama... and more! I am in love with the storyline and can't wait to keep reading the next book in the series. I actually felt the characters feelings... like I was there in the pages. Don't miss this book. It will be worth it!

The "Jetson's" version of a Vampire story. Modern tools of technology are available to this world of Jetson Vampires. Bella Forrest uses chains and jails to control the victims of vampires rather than mind control. The historic use of mind control of victims provided a certain mystery to the world of vampires which is lost in this story. This "lengthen" version is maybe a bit too long to be really great.

This book had high reviews and actually popped up on my newfeed through facebook. Readers compared it to Twilight so I decided to give it a try. I think I paid 99 cents for it. No it's not my favorite book out there, but it wasn't horrible. It kept my attention and the different idea of "The Shade" was interesting. The characters weren't that memorable, but with the way the book ended I have to find out what happens next.
