This update makes us aware of new issues that affect reading--"no child left behind", Kindles, computers, iPads, iPhones, etc. and how to maximize a child's pleasure (and yours) in reading aloud. The updated handbook in the second half of the book is a listing of proven good reads organized by age and kind. It is a valuable resource for fun and success in reading to children and watching them learn to read without being taught.

Anyone who follows the advice given in this book about reading to their children and students, will have a positive impact on the lives of their children and students. This is exceptional information. Worth the purchase if you will implement the suggestions.

This book is appropriate for every caring parent. I am a homeschooling mother of three and I can't recommend it highly enough. After reading the library's copy I had to buy my own copy, plus several for friends and family members who have kids. It is full of high-quality info and ideas about reading to children, and about them ultimately reading to themselves. There is also an organized and valuable "recommended books" list in the back. Wonderful!

Invaluable tool for teachers and librarians and an asset to parents. Comprehensive selection of books to share and read aloud and each entry lists similar titles and others in series. Covers materials from toddler to about age 14. Most importantly it explains WHY reading aloud is one of the essential first learning tools for any parent to use. Jim Trelease provides practical guidance on choosing materials to read aloud. He also explains why it is important to continue to read aloud to children even after they can read on their own. He is persuasive as he explains that it improves vocabulary, sequencing, flow of language and that listening level is higher than reading level. Plus much more. I have owned the first edition since about 1983. I ordered this as a gift for a friend but kept it for myself and ordered a second copy for a gift. It should be in every library and professional collection. It is also a great gift to parents.

This is a wonderful and important resource for parents. The first half of the book stresses the life-long benefit (and joy) of reading to your children in contrast to the harm of too little reading and too much/too early TV. The second half lists books that children love, giving you a tool for book selection. The result is children who love to read and are therefore naturally good readers, spellers, writers, and students. I always give this book to first time parents along with an appropriate baby book.

Reading aloud with your child not only encourages a love of reading, but it provides precious time for positive interaction in our hectic world. Trelease is an expert at choosing books that shine when read aloud. I buy this for all my friends and relatives who are new parents.

Jim Trelease offers a common sense approach to reading aloud to children. In this book, he provides oodles of research, techniques, and tips on how to get the most out of time spent reading aloud to children. I have purchased at least 10 copies over the years (and editions) to give to teacher friends and new parents. Very informative and easy to read!

This book introduced me and my children to a wonderful world of excellent literature. I used this book as a guide as I read to my children every evening for about 11 years. We looked forward to bedtime reading. Getting the kids to bed was easy with them looking forward to the stories. A grandparent's delight.

Even though I had very fond memories of my parents reading out loud to me and my siblings, I never thought of it as an important tool for raising one's children. Trelease's book convinced me not only to incorporate reading aloud into my everyday interactions with my kids, but proved to be one of the most delightful and fulfilling parts of our relationship. It has become one of my favorite and standard gifts for baby showers.

Great book. He takes comedic pot shots at the direction that the public school system is going while showing how wonderfully positive reading out loud to kids is. A lot of the reasoning is so obvious, but they were things I had never thought of before. It is a good read as well.

Every parent, teacher, and care giver must read this book. It is a great reference on the importance of reading both at school and at home. This may become my new go-to for baby shower and teacher gifts.

I loved it! Good, practical, research based advice for every educator from Pre-K -12 and especially for every parent.
Jim Trelease is a no nonesense type of guy. Listening to him speak is a pure delight. This book should be part of the curriculum for all college education programs that are reponsible for training our future teachers. I bought the Ebook, but I think I will buy the print copy so I can read aloud from it to my college students when we cover the section of read alouds and throughout the semester for that matter.

I have looked at this book before (in different editions), but have never picked it up. After all, I love to read, I read to my kids, and they love to read on their own, so what could I learn about reading that would make a difference? Turns out, plenty. Some of the book was simply a confirmation that what we are doing here at home is a good thing, but there is so much more to the book than that. Every parent should read this.

I would recommend this to every parent. This book was really eyeopening and now I try to read to my kids for 30 minutes every day. My kids love being read to, and I notice a lot of the new words they are using are coming from the books we read.

After checking the book out of the library for probably the 10th time, I decided to purchase it. My children enjoyed the recommended books when they were younger, now that they are teens, I found appropriate books we can read together.
