Any fan of Conan Doyle will appreciate this send up of the genisis of Sherlock Holmes. A young Doyle finds himself in an adventure that sets the stage for his life's greatest work...the creation of the greatest sleuth in print. If anyone has ever wondered about Doyle's inspiration this is the book to read!

I enjoyed "the list of seven". I was curious about it because: 1. the writer is the cocreator of twin peaks 2. it is said to be a cult book. Well, this is a very amusing, imaginative and original book but be warned: it is not literary at all. Of course, since it's a horror-adventure story, that's not what you would expect but there are parts (esp dialogue, strange for a screenwriter) that really could have been written better (this was obvious to me and I am not even a native english speaker). A few parts dragged a bit. Somehow, it seemed a bit like an old-fashioned adventure story for boys. It could be a very exhilarating movie. All in all, if you love the genre, you will probably enjoy it.

If you haven't read this book something is really wrong in your world. There is no better reason to stop what you are doing and read than Mark Frost- this is what storytelling is all about. I've read this book 3 times and catch new things each time around. It's the perfect blend of who-dun-it and supernatural thiller. The characters are engaging and Frost himself is brilliant in his plotline, dialouge, and descriptive action scenes. Why isn't this a movie? Because they just wouldn't be able to do it justice. This is by far my favorite novel ever. His sequel 'The 6 Messiahs' is in my top five.

After reading the great reviews I was really looking looking forward to this book. I have to admit that I was meagerly satisfied. Frosts unbeleivable use of adjectives became a source of humor. Each sentence crazier than the one before. Towards the middle I was drawn in to some of the character histories but I am not sure if I would even put this in the category of historical fiction. To me that implies a profound study and knowledge of the time period by the author and a story of events that could have or did actually happen. This is a peperback mystery good for a car ride or waiting in a doctors office. If you expect more you could easily be disappointed.

I read this and The 6th Messiah at the suggestion of Al Stroebel (the actor who played the one-armed man in Twin Peaks). According to Al, these novels showcase some of the writing style seen in the Twin Peaks series (Black Lodge/White Lodge, Doppleganger, etc.) I certainly agree with Al's assesment and I thoroughly enjoyed reading these books.
Mark Frost released another book under a pseudonym of Bowman, in it the killer is revealed in the first pages and we're taken on a journey of the law officer trying to find the killer though he's standing right in front of him.

This is a classic fantasy thriller that features Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of Sherlock Holmes as the hero! Doyle with the aid of a Holmeslike sleuth names Jack Sparks must match wits with a band of criminals trying to take over England by supernatural means. This novel combines thrills, chills, humor and a little romance it also has one dandy of a final line.

Fun novel featuring Arthur Conan Doyle before the "Sir" and before the novels were published. Lots of action and adventure, and pretty good, entertaining dialog to go along with it.
A quick, enjoyable read.

Mark Frost grabs your attention and gives you a thrill ride mixing historical events and figures. Think Sherlock Holmes hopped up on Red Bull meets Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde while riding a roller coaster.

As a dedicated fan and reader of many Sherlock Holmes stories, I must say this is one of the best I have ever read. While the "bad guys" in this stories are a little fantastic, Doyle and Holmes (through the character of Jack Sparks) live in these pages. A great story and characters. I couldn't put it down until the end.

Failed to capture my interest. Stopped reading about a third of the way in. The writing style is good, I liked the challenging vocabulary. The plot is just too contrived to lift off the ground. I expected a smart detective story and got a cheesy thriller that fails to thrill.

This book has everything you could want and is my personal favorite. If you read it and seem a little dissapointed at the ending read the sequel The Six Messiahs which is also a terrific book that I highly recommend!!!

Addendum: the reason for the dangling plot threads became apparent to me today when I saw the sequel in the bookstore. As I can't decide whether to increase my rating to reflect this or decrease it in disgust at the new trend of publishers hiding the fact that novels aren't stand-alones, I'll leave it be.
