After reading Susanna Kearsly's books, the store recommended this book and like other people I read the description and loved it. After reading a few chapters that were only a few pages long and two characters that I didn't know anything about I had to give up. I am not a writer but I think I had more depth, description and feeling in the novels I wrote in high school than this book. DON'T BUY IT! At least download the free sample first and decide if you want to keep reading. Thankfully.....it only cost me 2.99. I guess I will just wait for S.Kearsly's new book, Firebird to come out.

I thought this might have been a young adult novel. It was simply written. I never got to know with any depth any of the characters so I ended up not being drawn in and not caring much about any of them. There was no emotion to the novel. A waste of my time!

Poorly edited with spelling mistakes. I found the random switching between present and past story lines disjointed, but not necessarily confusing, since the whole plot line was obvious from the beginning. I did not find the romance between either sets of characters particularly believable - the whole story felt rushed, and some characters seemed totally pointless(why do we care about this friend back in the States??). There are some good Scottish time-travel themed novels with a romance thread through them, but this was not one of them. Just so-so.

While I love historical romances, this book just never seemed to find it's own voice. It seemed as though it was written by someone who has read a lot of historic romances and longed to be an author of one. Not enough time was devoted to any deep understanding of either the present day heroine or the past. In fact, the plot was very similar to a novel by Susanna Kearsley called 'Winter Sea' (an excellent and engaging book, by the way). Additionally, spelling mistakes and typos abound, which only contributes to the sense of amateurishness which pervades this book. I wanted to like it, but I felt the author just wants to reader to like her. A mediocre novel, at best.

Predictable, poor editing, was disapointed with this book, and the story.
I love to read and this book is the sort of thing that happen with ebooks, were anyone can write a story and sell it on the store.
I wish I could get my money back.

Cool picture on the cover, sucked me in.
I have been to Scotland and part of that was correct. I was on a plane and ended up reading the entire story.

I should have read the first few pages before buying The Inheritance. Thankfully, I was able to return it. It was so ridiculous that in this day and age of identity theft scams that someone would just pick up and go to Scotland to claim the inheritance of a grandfather that her mother swears doesn't exist. What about checking with an investigator first to see if the claim is at all valid? What about checking with a lawyer to see if the documents are on the up and up? I could have gotten past the ridiculous scenario if the writing had been half-way decent, but it wasn't. This person who is supposed to be an expert in literature doesn't even know that you're supposed to put a comma between two independent phrases? In addition, the author did not paint any kind of picture of the emotional state of the main character or even a picture of her physical surroundings. Just awful!

I was very disappointed in this book. The writing was poor. The book contains repeated sentences and character development is lacking. I usually enjoy reading historical novels and I savor the scenes created in my mind's eye by the author's descriptions of scenery, furnishings and clothing, using phrases and words which appeal to the reader's senses; but the writing here is very flat and uninspiring. Not a good read.

Great book. Loved the plot line. Story was very well developed. Just the right amount of detail and historical background without being overly wordy. Characters were very likeable and interesting and I could not wait to see how it all plays out. I hope to see more from this author.

Enjoyable story and easy to read. But the incorrect word usage and spelling mistakes makes one wonder if anyone cared about the author enough to actually proof read the story. These mistakes take away what would otherwise be a good flow in the story.
Absolutely a good holiday read and well worth buying, but don't expect to rely on the historical fact in the novel, it is a lovely fabrication and not based on known history. This doesn't lessen the pleasure of the read.

The Inheritance is a novel set in Scotland by Irina Shapiro. It is a good book and is written well. The characters are realistic and well developed. It takes place in the present and in the past.
Katherine Price was a teacher in a private school and was looking forward to summer vacation. She was grading papers when she received a phone call which was to change her life. Daniel Ogilvy was calling to inform her that her grandfather, Angus McBride had died in Scotland and left his entire estate to her. Katherine was confused, her Grandfather was James and died in a prisoner of war camp during World War II. He assured her that she was the person he was looking for. When Katherine talked to her Mother, she claimed her father was James McBride not Angus. Daniel assured her everything would be explained when she got to Scotland. So Katherine decided to go.
While here, she learns of the story of Isobel and Rory and she and the others try to figure out what happened to her.

I ordered the kindle version of this book and returned it almost immediately. Lately, I have been reading incredible books by S. Kearsley, page-turners, and very much enjoy Kearsley's style of writing, I'll just say.. sophisticated. "The Inheritance" was an the store recommendation for me because of the types of books I've been purchasing. However, there is no comparison. I'm not sure if Shapiro's book is her first, but the writing was kind of "simple" or "amateurish" and to me it was boring. The main character, speaking in the first person, even referenced an "unnamed" author whose books have recently put Scotland on the map for the tourist industry (I took that as a reference to Kearsley or another popular novelist). I am also distracted by the continuous need for grammatical and spelling editing. I guess by the 2nd chapter I knew I couldn't go any further. Perhaps her storyline was exceptional, but for me, I'll never know... first impressions count when sitting down and expecting a really good book. I am giving it 2 stars because of the storyline.. the plot was why I chose the book. I don't often take advantage of the free sample, because I've always ended up purchasing the book after reading the sample. This was a time when a sample would have been very helpful.

Katie is shocked when she gets a call from Scotland when a man passes who claims to be her grandfather. He leaves her everything. She goes to Scotland to deal with the Will and while there she begins to unravel long buried secrets. Who was this man and why did he leave her everything? While finding out the truth of her grandfather she also unlocks secrets to the castles late inhabitants. While in Scotland, she not only finds out the truth to her identity and that of her ancestors,  but also a love she never hoped to find.

I have become a bit of a junkie of Irina Shapiro's novels. Each book I read leads me to another and then another. They are so good. From beginning to end I just fall in love. The history and characters are well written and well thought out. They are colorful and dark and real. This book held a great mystery and a great love. From modern day times to the times of way back. They tell a haunting tale of hope, love, death, betrayal, and sacrifice. This book was a great one....Stormi

I chose this book because I love historical novels - specifically in this time period and place. Unfortunately l was disappointed almost from page one.

The characters are shallow and undeveloped. I didn't feel an attachment to them or the story which never seemed to take heart or become engrossing. In fact, I couldn't wait to finish it. Even the ending was predictable in an almost juvenile way...never mind the romantic interludes which were painfully insipid.

There are also formatting mistakes, typos galore, awkward sentences and strange segways between scenes that don't make sense and constantly interrupted the reading experience. Overall I'd say don't bother.

I enjoyed this book that is actually two separate stories woven together. In the present time Kate inherits a castle in Scotland on the condition that she actually go there to see it before deciding what to do with it. While there she stumbles upon the story of Isobel who was once the lady of the castle and who disappeared suddenly after her husband died in the mid 1700s. Flashing back and forth between the two time periods the author weaves two delightful stories that are connected but separate.

I like Gothic romances. But this one not so much. Awkward back & forth from 1744 to 2010. Confusing ending. Unrealistic “true” dreams. Poorly written sex scenes; could have been not so detailed and love scenes.

3 romances, one book. good thing it was a unlimited book and free, it was ok. No depth of characters or story. it isn't until the end that a connection is made to past and present. Its a young lovers book. I found it sadly lacking in any real depth, mostly fall in love in a flash and jump in bed. if you are in your 20's and have nothing to read it might be interesting. I'm old and read it to the end, just to see what happened. so there is that.

This book had everything I enjoy in a novel: romance, suspence and a touch of the supernatural. I love anything that takes place in Scotland and this was a double treat since there are parallel stories taking place in the Scotland of the present and the Scotland of the past. I particularly enjoyed the romance between Rory and isobel, which takes place against the backdrop of the Jacobite Rebellion of '45. The plicitical events provided an exciting background without dominating the story or shifting focus away from the main characters. I enjoyed all the intrigue and the descriptions of castle life in the 1700's. The modern day story was equally interesting with Katie searching for answes to her unexpected inheitance and discovering a cache of hidden letters that provided clues to the fate of Isobel, who was believed to have vanished without a trace. The two stories merged into a satisfying conclusion that left me wishing that the story would go on.

Very captivating stories. This is the seventh book that I have read by Irina Schapiro. Each book has been very captivating and has kept me interested. I look forward to reading more of her books. This particular book was one of my favorites so far.

I discovered this author by the suggestions from the store. I am so glad I picked her books up and read them. I really enjoy her books. Precious Bones has been my favorite so far but this one is not far behind. I highly recommend reading this author!

This story was very engaging, and I would have enjoyed it immensely, but for the author's lack of skill at English grammar. I find it jarring to be reading a book and come up against errors that the average middle school student knows better than to make. It's really too bad that the editor didn't do a better job, because, as I said, the story itself was good.

Absolutely loved reading this book. It made me cry and happy at the same time. Love Isobel and Rory story and everything they had to go through. The history of Scotland and the war and battles was very fascinating and also the story of Katie and her love conquest was great.
