Murder in the Paperback Parlor is the second book in the series A Book Retreat Mysteries by Ellery Adams and takes place in a quiet little village, Storyton, in Western Virginia. Just outside of town that boasts quaint small businesses like Geppetto’s Toy Shop and the Pickled Pig Market, lies Storyton Hall. A true book lover’s paradise, Storyton Hall, is a resort (manor house) that caters to readers. (The setting is described so well that you will feel like you are there!) The resort has thousands of books that will satisfy any guest. But out of the public’s view is a treasure far greater than anyone could image, a vault with literary works that have been entrusted to the Steward family for safe keeping. Unpublished works by Shakespeare, Gutenberg Bibles, personal diaries of authors like Emerson, works that predate Christ and so much more. It is up to the Guardian of Storyton Hall, Jane Steward, and the Fins (a group that protects the Guardian and the books) to keep these valuable works safe.
The book opens with Jane preparing the resort for a week long Regency Romance conference, with four big name romance authors in attendance and all their adoring fans. Except for a few hiccups, all seems to be going great until Jane is roused from her sleep and told that Rosamund York, the queen of romance, has been found dead in the gardens. It doesn’t take long for the Fins to realize Rosamund’s death wasn’t accidental and that she was poisoned. Jane quickly discovers that not everyone loved Rosamund, leaving her with a list of suspects and many possible motives. Another person turns up dead and with the conference coming to a close and the reputation of the resort at stake; it is up to Jane and the Fins to solve the murders quickly.
I really liked how the book kept me guessing right until the end who the murderer was and their motive. I also liked that we got to know the minor characters better and bits of their stories like Edwin (potential love interest who is not liked by any of the Fins or Jane’s family) and Lachlan (newest member of the Fins). I loved the struggles that Jane encounters in this book; they make her such a realistic character. Imagine trying to balance being entrusted to guard a priceless collection of books, a widower with two twin boys and someone who is yearning to love again. The ending definitely sets up the possibility for some interesting plot twists and complications for Jane in the upcoming book to be published in 2016.
Overall it was an excellent read! I would highly recommend it to anyone because this book has it all; mystery, action, adventure, drama and love.

This is fast becoming one of my favorite cozy mystery series! Ellery Adams has transported us to Storyton Hall, a manor house. located in a secluded valley in Virginia. The story is set in modern times but with the imagery painted by Ms. Adams, it evokes a sense of yesteryear. Storyton Hall is a most unique place, it houses a library of thousands of books in all genres; this how the book retreat came to be.
It’s almost Valentine’s Day so Storyton Hall has a romance retreat planned for readers of romance. The festivities have barely started when a popular author is murdered. Jane and her book club friends work together to find the culprit before someone else is hurt.
I enjoy Ellery Adams writing style, she paints a beautiful portrait with her words. I enjoy her characterizations, and how she bring them to light. The mystery was well laid out, with plenty of twists that kept me guessing. This book was a joy to read! I look forward to reading more in this series and seeing what happens next.
I received an advanced copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Book #93 Read in 2015
Murder in the Paperback Parlor by Ellery Adams
This is the second book in a cozy mystery series set in Storyton Hall, a wonderful literary retreat for readers and writers, set in the small town of Storyton, which is full of quaint shops. Jane is running the Hall and is a member of a secret society of librarians who are charged with keeping safe literary treasures from all over the world, from all different time periods. In this book, a romance readers convention is being held and of course there is a murder for Jane to solve. Jane is a tough, intelligent woman who can handle her own. Besides Jane, there are delightful characters such as her twin sons, her aunt and uncle, Muffet Cat and the other members of the secret society. This mystery was well written and the identity of the murderer kept me guessing until the end. I highly recommend this series to cozy mystery lovers. I cannot wait for book #3 to come out next summer. I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for a honest review.

I just finished Murder in the Paperback Parlor by Ellery Adams. This is the second book in the Book Retreat Mystery series. Jane Stewart is the resort manager for Storyton Hall in Virginia. She is gearing up for Romancing the Reader week which is taking place during Valentine’s week. Jane has invited four romance authors to be present during the week. The most famous author is Rosamund York (who is a diva). Rosamund arrives with her assistant, Taylor Birch (who is to make sure the author has everything she desires). Maria Stone is one of the guests who is a big fan of Rosamund York’s Venus novels. At an auction to benefit literacy Rosamund agrees to give every person who donates an advanced copy of the first book in her new series. Unfortunately for Rosamund, her new novel is not a hit especially with her biggest fan, Maria. Early the morning after a day of truffle making and eating, Rosamund is found dead in the garden. So many people wanted her dead especially after reading her latest book.
Jane and the staff have their work cut out for them trying to find the killer before the week is over. Jane gets some relief during the week with a romantic encounter with Edwin Alcott. Edwin is the brother of Jane’s best friend, Eloise (who runs the bookstore in town). Edwin used to be a travel writer until he purchased the Daily Bread café. Now he is busy wooing Jane. Jane’s aunt, Octavia does not seem pleased with the romance. Why does Aunt Octavia know about Edwin that Jane does not?
Murder in the Paperback Parlor was a wonderful cozy mystery. I enjoyed the characters, the setting (who would not enjoy a mansion full of books), and the mystery. I have to confess that for the first time this year, I did not solve the mystery (I am shocked). I usually solve the mystery early in the book, but this time I picked the wrong person. Ellery Adams did a superb job. There is much more to the book (I have just told you about the main part). I really did not want this book to end. I give Murder in the Paperback Parlor 5 out of 5 stars! It was a delight to read this story.
I received a copy of the book from the author in exchange for an honest review. The review and opinions expressed are my own.

Book one in the Book Retreat Mystery series, MURDER IN THE MYSTERY SUITE, was one of my favorite books of 2014. Everything I loved about that book has only gotten better in MURDER IN THE PAPERBACK PARLOR.
Storyton Hall is a place I would want to visit again and again. A quiet country retreat to spend time with other bibliophiles would be perfect wouldn’t it? But Storyton Hall isn’t all it appears to be. What with pesky murder to contend with. Never fear…the staff of Storyton can handle anything that arises, because they aren’t what they appear to be either.
You would think with fans of romance descending on the Hall so close to Valentine’s Day, things would be all love and flowers. Come on…this is an Ellery Adams book. Someone has to die! In this case, it’s a celebrated romance author.
Author Ellery Adams lets the reader get a good way into the book before the discovery of the body. I was lulled into the story, taking in the surroundings, enjoying my stay just as much as the characters in the book. I was having a grand time with protagonist Jane, her family, the staff, the Cover Girls…I felt like I was on holiday. With her flawless style of writing and perfect sense of timing, Author Adams had me so absorbed in this fantastic book, I forgot I was reading a murder mystery. So when the death was announced, I was actually shocked. How fun is that? And before I had a chance to get over my shock, mystery, intrigue, and action took over the pages leaving me breathless.
Nancy Drew, Miss Marple, and Jane Steward…these are the sleuths I’ll always remember when I think of mystery. You need to read this book!
Also included is a sneak peek of book seven in the Ellery Adams Books By The Bay series, WRITING ALL WRONGS.

Another great entry in the Book Retreat Mystery series. I fell in love with Storyton Hall and its various residents after the first book (Murder In The Mystery Suite). Getting to spend time with them again was exciting and fun.
This time around, it's nearly Valentine's Day, and there is a week of romantic literary events at the resort. Of course, romance is in the air for several couples, even after one of the visiting romance writers is murdered. And, of course, we're treated to Jane's training as the new Guardian of the Library, along with her twins, Fitz and Hem (Fitzgerald and Hemingway).
We're learning more about the secrets of the mansion with each book, and getting to know all of the characters better as well. The end of this book hints at things to come in the future, and I can hardly wait to see how they might play out.
I received an advance copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are entirely my own.

Valentines Day is fast approaching, making it the perfect time for Storyton Hall to host the Romancing the Reader retreat. Fans of romance novels are gathering to participate in several fun themed activities throughout the week. The highlight of the trip will be interacting with the best selling Regency author, Rosamund York. However, the retreat quickly becomes a crime scene when Ms York is found poisoned in the gardens. Jane and the guardians of Storyton Hall must keep their guests happy while investigating them at the same time!
I love cozies that encorporate other genres or unique characters. Ellery Adams is so good at doing that. In this series, you have a secret society that protects literary treasures. They are well trained in archery, martial arts and apparently pros at solving mysteries! Jane is a fabulous main character. She is smart, determined to be a great guardian and she's a mother to two rambunctious boys! I love that she doesn't know everything. She still has a lot to learn in regards to her new position. She is also vulnerable about falling in love. That whole dance scene between her and Edwin was simply magical!! I love all of the supporting characters too. The Fins are mysterious making it easy to believe that they lead double lives. I especially loved the storyline with Lachlan and his rather bizarre frozen packages. The members of Jane's book group are hysterical. There were also a few entertaining scenes amongst the characters who are partaking in the retreat. Especially when they set out to choose the next Regency model! The setting is absolutely wonderful. Every review I've ever read from this series always mentions a desire to visit Storyton Hall. Rather it's to read in the various parlour or to discover one of its many secret passageways. It sounds like the perfect getaway for any avid reader.
The mystery was very captivating in this book. Since there was a retreat going on, there were many characters to get to know and sort through, especially when you add them to the regular cast. I managed to keep them all straight though! I had a hunch who the culprit was, but rather enjoyed watching the clues slowly build up. I'm definitely anxious to read book three. I need to learn more about Edwin and his motives after those last few pages.

Jane Steward and her staff have prepared a great week of activities for romance fans at Storyton Hall's Romancing The Reader conference. Among the guests at the quaint resort that features such rooms as the Agatha Christie Tea Room and the William Faulkner Room are several famous romance writers, including Rosamund York.
Rosamund is providing conference goers with ARCs of her latest novel, and some of them are less than thrilled with her newest work. When Rosamund is found dead in the garden, suspects, including jealous fellow authors, disgruntled readers and a freelance journalist, seem to be everywhere. Jane and her staff work to find out whodunit, and why.
In the second installment of the Book Retreat Mystery series, Ellery Adams has provided a wonderful place for readers to take a break from reality. Storyton Hall is a character itself and it provides an intriguing backdrop for the characters Ms. Adams draws with such great finesse.
Jane's sleuthing skills prove up to the task and I particularly enjoyed the way she treated the victim and the suspects with respect. She is a truly gracious innkeeper and a great detective.
If you haven't taken a trip to Storyton Hall you're missing out. The Book Retreat Mystery series provides great characters, a wonderful setting and a mystery that will keep readers guessing until the culprit is revealed.
I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Though many of the same elements of a cozy mystery are here, Ellery Adams breaks off a bit with the inclusion of quotes from classic books and poetry. I am not going to say that others have not done this, but considering that the story takes place at Storyton, an estate that was brought over from England to Virginia one stone at a time to create a heaven on earth for bibliophiles it is the perfect addition.
Storyton has a deeper secret that is not revealed to the guests. It houses an extensive collection of books, manuscripts and unfinished documents that have been kept from the public’s eye for centuries. There is a secret guard called the Fins that are responsible to protect the Steward Family and the guardian of the library.
Jane Steward is the current guardian and in addition to that stressor, she is a single parent to twin boys and is running a hotel that caters to a very select clientele. This week, she is hosting a “Romancing the Reader” event. Envisioning a lovely, festive and harmonious times did not prepare her for the body that was found.
Apparently, romance writers can have a mean side and when they start bickering amongst themselves and threats begin with uncovering a charlatan, Jane is working double time to keep the event on track. Then when a writer introduces a new book with a character that is offensive to some, there is no telling who exactly is responsible for the death.
There are many subplots in the book and that keeps the reader bouncing along. Some are interesting but when you begin to put all the fragments together, it is obvious early on what direction Ellery Adams is going but that is okay since there is enough side adventures to the reader engaged.

Murder in the Paperback Parlor, the second installment in the Book Retreat Mystery series, is a delight. An idyllic mansion in a quaint village complete with secret passages and books, books, and more books – what could make for a more ideal setting for a cozy murder?
Valentine’s week has arrived at Storyton Hall, and manager Jane has a week’s worth of romantic activities planned for the Romancing the Reader Retreat. A panel of romance writers, male cover model contest, ball, fashion show, and auction are just a portion of the itinerary. Rosamund York is the headliner for the event, and from the moment of the elusive author’s arrival, tension rises. Her assistant does not want to abide by the resort rules, another author is dreadfully jealous of her, and her fans just might turn against her after they read the advance copies of her new book which is a bid departure from her usual offerings. When the phone rings in the wee hours, Jane knows it cannot be good news, and sure enough, Rosamund has been found lifeless in the garden. Keeping her death a secret is not possible, and the retreat goes on as scheduled in honor of her memory. Only now, instead of playing cupid, Jane must put on her investigative hat.
The more Jane digs the more dirt she finds about the ever private author and that she had as many enemies as she did secrets. Georgia Dupree is Rosamund’s chief rival and is almost gleeful upon hearing about her demise. Rosamund was seen arguing with a journalist, Nigel, who is there to write freelance work. Rosamund’s “biggest” fan Maria Stone makes an about face, feeling Rosamund betrayed the cause of women in her latest contemporary romance. As Rosamund’s assistant, Taylor Birch had access to all aspects of her life. Then there are all of the other retreat attendees to consider.
As if the murder was not enough to keep Jane busy, she must continue to work with the Fins, a group dedicated to protecting the secret treasures hidden in Storyton Hall, as the priceless collection’s new Guardian, care for her precocious twins Fitz and Hem, and keep her own romantic feelings for her best friend’s brother in check. What embers she hoped to fuel into the flame of love for Edwin are dowsed by her family and the Fins when they tell her Edwin’s true identity.
Though Murder in the Paperback Parlor did not exactly end with a cliff hanger, it did leave me wanting to know more. Jane is a strong and appealing character and Edwin is proving to be quite the man of mystery, but it is the Fins that I find so captivating. A group of older men for the most part, who would think that the main librarian would know how to throw a roundhouse kick or that the chauffeur has a secret laboratory. I love all of these guardians. Uncle Aloysius is endearing, but Aunt Octavia is a bit tedious at times. The mystery itself is well paced with realistic suspects and motives. I did guess whodunit fairly early into the story, but there were enough twists and turns to make me second guess myself at times.
Ellery Adams spins a fine tale full of jealously, love, greed, aspirations, and poison. I absolutely loved Murder in the Paperback Parlor and cannot wait to read the next installment. Highly recommended.

Murder In The Paperback Parlor is the second book in the A Book Retreat Mystery series.
Another wonderful story from Ellery Adams to add to her growing list of great books.
Valentine's Day is coming up and in celebration, Jane Steward is planning a Romancing the Reader program at Storyton. Jane has invited of the top Regency period writers to come and discuss their genre with their readers. Roseamund York, a best selling romance author has irritated almost everyone from the time that she stepped out of the car that brought her to Storyton Hall. So when her body is found early one morning, hardly a tear was shed, but Jane, always ready for a challenge begins her own investigation and uses the resources of her security staff to help the police find the murderer.
There are plenty of suspects for Jane to consider as the killer. Georgia Dupree, close in popularity to readers as was York, has had run-ins in the past with York. Now that York is out of the picture, Dupree is very interested in taking over York series. But is she interested enough to cause the demise of York. Nigel Poindexter, a freelance journalist, seems to be about the only York is on friendly terms with, but then when they have a very vocal argument at lunch, he is drawn into the list of suspects. Maria Stone, a women's advocate, was there in support of York's strong female character. But when she read an advanced readers copy of York's new series, in which the male character is the person has control over the women in the book, Jane needs to learn if this was enough to cause Maria to off the “deep end” so to speak. Jane is also taking a look at Taylor Birch, York's publicist. York has gone through a number of publicists recently and Taylor seems to be going out of her way to obtain publicity for her employer. Jane needs to figure out if the stress of the job has taken it toll on Taylor and something happened to cause her to snap and take it out on York.
Besides the wonderful mystery that Adams provides the reader, the thing that I love about the series are the supporting staff at the Storyton Hall, Jane's family and the residents of village of Storyton. They're all wonderful and believable characters and all so willing to give Jane what ever help she might need. Two other items that I thought was a nice added touch, is that Adams has provided the reader with a map of the Village of Storyton and a list of the Hall's staff and a list of the village shops and owners.
As with all of Ellery Adams' books, I am anxiously awaiting the next one.Murder In The Paperback Parlor is the second book in the A Book Retreat Mystery series.
Dollycas’s Thoughts
I was blown away by the first book in this series, Murder in the Mystery Suite, and this one is even better.
We return to Storyton just in time for Romancing the Reader week. The hall is full of lovers of romance novels and Jane has arranged for some special romance authors to attend as well. A full week of activities is planned including a search to find the perfect model for an upcoming romance novel cover, author panels and more. The most well known author is Rosamund York. There is a little friction between her and the other authors but Jane never thought anyone would kill her. When her body is found Jane, the new Guardian of the Library, knows she has to move quickly to find the person responsible and save the reputation of Storyton Hall. She enlists the help of the Cover Girls and a few trusted members of the staff to help her target the killer and bring them justice.
Storyton Hall is a quite a place. Secret stairways, secrets passages, secret room and most important of all a secret library. It is a book lover’s dream come true. The staff is unique, each person seems to have at least one secret talent. The characters are truly dynamic and escape right into your heart. As with the first book I still cannot choose a favorite.
Ellery Adams writes a story that puts you right in the room, looking over Jane Steward’s shoulder, taking in all the mayhem and mystery. There were quite a few suspects and more twists than I could count. The subplots just flow perfectly through the main mystery.
This is one of those stories that you want to savor and read slowly so you do not miss a single clue or nuance but once you start reading and the mystery starts to unfold you find the pages are turning faster and faster. When you reach the end you are happy that the mystery is solved but sad that your visit to Storyton has come to an end. Then you realize you have to wait a year to return to a place you have come to love in just a little over 300 pages.

Murder in the Paperback Parlor is the second installment in the Book Retreat Mystery series. The series features Jane Steward who is the Guardian of Storyton Hall. Storyton Hall is a delightful retreat for book lovers to vacation, and it also harbors a collection of secret and unpublished literature by famous authors.
Jane is busy preparing for the Romancing the Reader week which in honor of Valentine's Day will feature a panel of three well known Romance writers. The week is full of activities including a truffle workshop, Male Model cover hunt, and a Regency fashion show. The widely acclaimed Rosamund York will be in attendance much to the delight of her faithful following of readers and the dismay of the two authors who often are lost in her shadow.
When Rosamund meets an untimely death, Jane sets out with the help of her staff (the Fins), and her close friends, the Cover Girls to find her killer. It turns out that Rosamund isn't exactly who she claims and there are plenty of suspects with motive to snuff out the author.
Once again, Ellery Adams writes a page turner with plenty of twists and turns. Ellery writes such beautiful descriptions of Storyton Hall that you can picture yourself curling up in one of the many reading rooms, cooking alongside Mrs. Hubbard, practicing your self defense skills under the tutelage of the Fins, and sipping a cup of tea with one of Jane's closest girlfriends.
A delightful story and I can't wait for the third installment to see how things evolve in the Village of Storyton.

I was the grateful recipient of an early copy from the author in exchange for writing a fair and unbiased review.
Ellery Adams has created another masterpiece here. The almost magical setting of Storyton Hall is magnificent; an English mansion transported block by block to western Virginia and filled with hundreds of thousands of books. There are secrets here, also, that only a select few are aware of: a library within the library, filled with the rarest manuscripts in the world and being cared for by a cadre of dedicated individuals. When a group of romance readers and authors descend upon Storyton Hall for a Valentine's Week convention, some bring with them old hatreds, relationships, rivalries, and ambitions. And "thereby hangs the tale." Along with the mystery surrounding not one but two murders, the reader is treated to a lovely, almost gothic, tale of romance and betrayal. One of the best I've read this year!

Awesome story with a different twist. This was my first Book Retreat Mystery but will not be my last. Jane Steward and her twin boys live at Storyton Hall with her Aunt & Uncle and many helpers. Jane's family has been in the "book saving" business for many centuries and the Stewarts have been trusted with secrets that no one else knows. Her helpers consists of Fins who are charged with protecting these secrets and are in the process of teaching Jane & her children how to protect those secrets. Storyton Hall is the site of a Regency Romance Getaway and it's not far into the program when the first person turns up dead. Jane along with her fellow compatriots are involved in figuring out "who done it". The story is very entertaining, the twins are charming, and Jane's group of friends are ones I would welcome as well. Overall, I'm very glad I read this book; it's always fun to find a new author / series.

Book #2 in the Book Retreat Series, and though it just came out, I can't wait for the #3! Brilliantly written, there is of course a body (or two ;) ), and that has to be solved, but I love the mystery around the Storyton Hall, the idea of a very very secret library hidden within the resort, with a most secret family of guardians and their trusted double-agent-type servants :)
It is Valentines day, the resort is full of romance-loving ladies, there are romance authors present and lots of fun and festive activities planned... What can go wrong? :) Well, that is obviously the very bad question to ask... The writer is found dead, followed by a mysterious reporter...And the group of suspects does not want to get any smaller at first... :)
Add to that the affair between Jane - newest guardian of the secret library - and very secretive Edwin, Jane's BFF's brother... Who turns out to have not quite clean book-record...
Fun read! Very captivating plot(s), likable characters - great series!!!!

I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. Ellery Adams has done very well in bringing the Storyton Resort to life. It was thought provoking, entertaining, and had just the right amount of humor. The plot moved briskly, but not too fast. The clues were well thought out and if you paid attention, you could follow the how and why of whodunnit. It is the second book in the series, but it also stands well enough on its own.
There is no gratuitous sex or violence. I find that marvelous. There was just the right amount of romance without anyone being tawdry. All in all I highly recommend this book and my next thought is to find the first book in the series and go read that too.
Every one of her characters remains true and well-rounded. Even the ancillary characters remain in their place. They are delightful and warm. Storyton is truly a lovely place to visit. I hope to visit again many times in the future.

Murder in the Paperback Parlor is the second book in Ellery Adams A Book Retreat Mystery Series. In this book we find Jane Steward preparing Storyton Hall for Romancing the Reader Week leading up to Valentines Day. Unexpectedly a famous author Rosamund York is found dead in the garden. That is just the beginning of the mysteries and surprises for Jane and the Finns leading up to Valentines Day. Between missing suspect, secret identities and a little romance this quaint cozy mystery will have you from the beginning to end. Mrs. Adams has truly produced a list of characters from our heroine Jane Steward, The Fins and the Cover Girls that you will enjoy getting to know. It is a book lovers dream. I am excited to see where Mrs. Adams leads us in the next A Book Retreat Mystery.

Another great cozy mystery from Ellery Adams! This is the second book in the new Book Retreat series.
Even more than the first book in the series “Murder in the Paperback Parlor” makes me wish Storyton Hall was a real place – a book lover’s retreat in beautiful Central Virginia where electronics/tech are not allowed in the public areas of the hotel.. no selfies ;-). Which is perfectly appropriate in an old English manor house that has been dissembled in England and reassemble block by block in a secluded valley and turned into a literary themed B&B. And of course if you’ve read the first book in the series you already know there is more to Storyton Hall than meets the eye.
I love that in this series there is a good bit more than the daily lives of the primary characters and the murder mystery at hand… or rather that there is quite a bit of intrigue in the daily lives of the primary characters (including a new Storyton Hall staff member introduced in this book). The book got off to a bit of a slow start, but picked up pace and with the hints of more to come in the next installment I am looking forward to visiting Storyton again!

Jane Steward is once again hosting a special event at Storyton Hall. This time it is a romance writers and readers week to mark Valentine's Day. The most famous author there is murdered and it is up to Jane and her friends, the Cover Girls and the Fins to solve the crime.
This book is more than a mystery, more than a gently unfolding love story. With quotations and references to literary works it is a celebration of the gift of books and reading.
It is a real pleasure to again meet the twins, Hem and Fitz, Uncle Aloysius, Aunt Octavia and Muffet Cat. I'm hoping we'll see a lot more of the mysterious Edwin Alcott.
I can't wait for the third book in the Book Retreat Mystery series!

I received an advance copy from the author in exchange for an honest review. This is the second book in Ellery Adams' newest series, the Book Retreat Mysteries.
Jane Steward is the manager of Storyton Hall, a literary resort in the bucolic village of Storyton. A prominent romance writer is murdered during a Valentine's event, and it is up to Jane, her staff and her book club to sort out just who is the perpetrator.
Adams' depiction of the feisty (but almost always appropriate) Jane is what drew me to this book, the second in the Book Retreat Series. Jane is a relatable heroine with real human feelings, expectations and issues. The mystery is very well crafted, and Adams' attention to detail is exquisite. I love the literary aspects of the village, Storyton Hall and the names of the characters. There's suspense, romance, and adventure, with a little bit of humor sprinkled here & there. I'm looking forward to Jane's next adventure, and you should, too.

Highly recommend this series. This book has a fun plot that keeps you guessing throughout. Had to keep reading until I finished the book, did not want to put it down. Love how the characters are portrayed in this story. The twins were especially well defined, full of fun and very normal boys. The settings at Storyton Manor and how the books were cared for helped to make the story more interesting. Cannot wait to read another book by Ms. Adams.

The plot is complex with multiple characters that lead you in many directions. Jane must solve the murder of one her Regency authors and it spirals into a wonderfully engaging plot that keeps you reading till the very end. We learn more about her employees and the enigmatic Edwin, which makes you want to read the next book asap. It should be in everyone's too read pile.

Ellery Adams welcomes you to Storyton Village, and Storyton Hall. What I love the most about Adams is that she has the rare ability to transport you into the story. You open the cover, and one of the first things you see is a map of Storyton Village. A map doesn’t put you there, but her words do. You quickly learn who the characters are and their personalities. You become to know these people as friends, and some of them, enemies. You begin to “feel” the story. This makes Adams’ second ability amazing characterization. This is Adams’ second book in her Book Retreat Series. I would also dive into her other two series; Books By The Bay (6 books out so far) and Charmed Pie Shoppe (4 books out currently). I pre-order anything that is written by Ellery. Her third ability, and a very important one, is she leaves the reader always wanting more. So, visit Murder in the Paperback Parlor. Meet Jane Steward, her twins Fitz and Hem, and the Storyton family. Catch up on Ellery’s other series, then join the rest of us waiting for her next book. You will be in great company.

Ellery Adams has the ability to transport a reader into the story. Her second book in this series, brings you back to Storyton Hall for another gathering of readers, favorite writers and book reviewers. You are introduced to the people of the village of Storyton and a map is included so you always know where everything is happening. Ms Adams makes her characters come alive with her writing, even those who manage to not stay alive! Jane Steward is the keeper of Storyton Hall which is a resort that is all about books. Guests gather to have a fun experience while a well known writer of romance books dies and is found in the garden of Storyton Hall. Seems this may be murder! It is time for Jane to go into action and find the killer. The story weaves a tale around Storyton Hall staff, Jane's twin sons, her aunt and uncle. Meanwhile the resident cat chooses the good guys and the bad, all the while letting everyone know that treats must not be missed, murder or not! This book is a page turner. I just wish that Storyton really exisited. I would book a room at Storyton Hall and love the experience! Can't wait for book #3 in this series! What will happen to Jane next?

My first book in this series, but very enjoyable! Storyton Hall itself, the staff and the residents in the village down the road are all entertaining, with delightful personalities! When one of the guest authors is murdered during a Regency readers retreat, Jane Steward is in deep trying to keep the Hall afloat, the guests calm and her twin boys safe while trying to help solve the crime. Romance is in the air, but is everyone really who they say they are? This book was a FAST read and I loved it! A cliffhanger at the end had me gasping and anticipating the next installment. I was given an advanced readers copy in exchange for an honest review.

This was my second visit to Storyton Hall. After reading the first installment in this series, I was in love. The characters are so quirky & lovable. There is also a very original side mystery involving the family that leads to all sorts of complications as well as helps in solving the murders that seem to pop up in the middle of themed hotel events. The leading protagonist runs this hotel along with her Aunt & Uncle & a myriad of staff who all aren't exactly as they seem. She has twin sons & a handsome love interest who just happens to be the brother of her best friend.
This second book has Storyton Hall hosting Romance authors & their readers. The claws come out & murder soon ensues. I don't like to give away spoilers so I will just say that if you are truly a fan of the cozy mystery & want something a little different than a typical culinary or bookstore type book, then do give this series a try. I'd suggest reading the first one first. I had to wait months for this one to come out. You, dear reader are lucky enough to have them both available so that you can go straight from one to the other. Sadly, I must wait another year to see what happens next. Enjoy!
I received an advanced copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts & opinions are entirely my own.

Ellery Adams has outdone herself with her second book in the “Book Retreat Mystery” series featuring Jane Austen and Storyton Hall.
I am a voracious reader of cozy mysteries and I am always on the lookout for new authors with tantalizing stories to tell book after book and Ellery is one of my all-time favorites. I am a huge fan of her “Charmed Pie Shoppe Mysteries” and her “Books the Bay Mysteries”, so it was not a momentous decision of mine to read her first book in this series, Murder in the Mystery Suite.
And I waited with bated breath for the next book in this series to see if Ellery could sustain the same level of momentum between plotline and character development. Lo and behold, she went that extra step that she always does in her books and gave me a book that I could not put down and finished in one setting!
Storyton Hall is a bookophile’s dream of heaven: a resort dedicated to the old and the new of literature genres, with a mixture of British and American ideals. It is located in small village nestled snuggly in the rural hills of Western Virginia. The way that Ellery has presented this utopia on earth – oh if only it was for real- I would be booked weekly in one of their suites for whatever book event was scheduled.
I love that Ellery has added a “subplot within each main plot” of this series. A bit of British intrigue as a facade located within a hidden wall in Storyton Hall houses antiquities of old books, manuscripts and artwork that she is sworn to protect with the help of current and long term employees of Storyton Hall.
I love how Ellery develops the characters slowly throughout the book, giving the reader time to decide who their favorite heroes are and who are the villains. Jane Austen is a strong leading character with normal everyday problems and foibles as she manages Storyton Hall, protection of the secret stash and raising and coping with young growing twin boys.
With the Valentine theme for a book event as the primary setting in this book – what better way to celebrate the holiday than with four very opinionated and strong willed romance authors, one of whom is the top bestseller, Rosamund York, in the genre? Put a diva loose with three up and coming romance authors in a very competitive field and the strong drive to get their next books published regardless of how they go about it and you have fireworks that could outdo any Fourth of July celebration!
And that is exactly what happens, Ellery leads us through the catfights, the headaches of overly enthusiastic readers who are attending the event and the normal mayhem of managing Storyton Hall, so we sympathize each step of the way when Jane and her crew are on the edge of exasperation.
Then the murder of Rosamund York occurs, what a surprise, and the plot thickens. There are too many suspects and not enough clues, but Ellery keeps the momentum building with each turning page until you are actually routing for the killer by the end of the book. Rosamund York was not a nice person.
If you want an outstanding book that provides the essence of the cozy mystery genre, do not look any further… buy this book and I will guarantee you will fall in love with Ellery Adams and can’t wait to buy all her books. You will not be disappointed!

This was a well written, very detailed mystery. At times I thought I was in the room while she was describing in detail each room in the house. I just love houses with secret rooms too! The characters are very surprising and keep you wondering about their true background. Read this book and you will be hooked. Not to mention I love to read authors who are from my home town :)

This is 2nd in the book retreat mysteries. Jane Steward ir organizing a week of activities for fans of love stories at her book themed resort. The readers are totally into romance novels and there are several authors there. One of the top selling authors is killed and it is up to Jane to find out who did it.

I am so jealous! Imagine a mansion where every nook and cranny was filled with books! Alas, a murder of a favorite author in, of course, the Paperback Parlor. Lots of twists and "page turning". A great series for us reading addicts.

Adams knows her literature. She also knows just how to tease a plot line, feather it into distracting side loops, & then pull it taut in an unexpected finale. The characters brim with life. Enjoy ~

Though I have read many of Ellery Adams books, this is the first one of this series. I do not believe that I lost any of the story by starting the series on the third book in. It was engaging from the first chapter and the story stands by itself very well. The characters are friendly and warm and draw you right into their lives. Storyton Hall and its inhabitants from the old to the young are engaging. It is filled with suspense as well as romance and comedy. I was drawn into the rooms and hidden passages of Storyton Hall and I look forward to reading the other books in this series so that I can catch up with the characters and what has brought them to this story. I received a copy of this book in exchange for a review, the opinions in said review are totally my own.

I absolutely loved this book (and the first one in the series). Ellery Adams makes the retreat and the people in it come alive to me.....I really want to go to this place (hopefully not be murdered..lol..) and just read in one of the amazing rooms. I love how she includes the town and the shoppes.....Once again I was highly satisfied with one of her books and didn't want it to end !!!!

I have fallen in love with another Ellery Adams series! Murder in the Paperback Parlor is just as cozy, warm, intriguing and fun as book # 1! The characters are just as lovable and some have grown. Jane Steward is amazing again as the Storyton Hall Director and makes me wish there was such a resort that exists! As a cozy mystery writer, Ms. Adams introduces another book genre (Romance) and one would believe she has her hand in the area of writing as well! Kudos on creativity!! This book is packed full of different mystery, love and some “Espionage”. This is a GREAT Read!

The book retreat series caught my attention with the characters. They have unique characteristics that make them sound like folks you'd like to meet. The twins are well developed as part of the story line.
Please RateMurder in the Paperback Parlor (A Book Retreat Mystery)
"I was promised a dance," and thus begins one of the subplots of this wonderful book - the second book in the Book Retreat Mystery series. Jane Steward is the mistress of Storyton Hall and guardian of its repository of secret, obscure library of books. The story opens with a bang, with Jane being taught moves worthy of 007 to assist her in protecting the library of rare artifacts. It's Valentine's Day, and Storyton Hall is hosting a book-themed week called "Romancing the Reader," which includes several top romance novelists. One particularly thorny personality, Rosamund York, is killed, and Jane determines to find the killer. Subplots include the antics of Jane's twin sons (who are delightful!), Jane's friends in the Cover Girls Book Club, a pig-naming contest thrown by the local market, and various romances, including Jane's mysterious admirer, Edwin Alcott.
I cannot express how much I enjoyed this book. The writing is impeccable and the various subplots keep the momentum flowing until the end. I loved reading about Jane's 007 training; and the way new characters are introduced - like flower buds opening to full disclosure - was captivating. Ellery Adams's writing is just delightful. With plentiful references to all types of literature, and a list of main characters and a map in the front of the book, this is a story sure to please.
