I always love reading C. S. Lewis, but his books are never easily read in a short amount of time. This little book allows you to latch onto a simple thought for one day - and ponder it. Great daily reading.

This is a great devotional book. It is both inspirational and convicting. Lewis is one of the most if not the most intelligent Christian thinker, and yet he breaks things down to their utter simplicity. I definitely recommend this to anyone looking to get started reading C.S lewis' writings. The excerpts are the perfect length for daily pick me ups.

What an insight Lewis had to glory of God and what is going on in God's creation. He sees man as the sinner he is and holds up before us the marvelous grace of God which has been demonstrated to the world in the life, death, and resurrection of His Son, Jesus Christ. Lewis has a redeeming message for every day of the year. What a blessing this book is!

It was a good overall picture of Lewis' writing, and as much as he is heralded as one of the top Christian writer/thinkers. I learned from some of these devotion pieces that his writing could slide into professorial musings.

I own every book (except one) that was ever written by Lewis, frequently in first editions or full leather bindings and have read each one several times. I also own several books written by Walter Hooper who put Lewis as the author.

This collection is very good at representing the razor sharp reasoning skills of Lewis and his way of explaining things clearly to the general public.

Be prepared to have your value standards challenged.

Reading a small daily passage from the expansive Lewis collective is a brilliant way to both familiarize one's self with his work as well as the Christian tradition. It is no wonder that each generation finds much in Lewis to engage and challenge.

As expected with anything written by C.S. Lewis, these excerpts from his various books is superb! Short thought provoking nuggets of wisdom to read for each day of the year from one of the most brilliant minds. You can't really go wrong! Highly edifying and recommended!

Passages from some of his better known works provide daily thought-provoking words for every-day Christian living. Written mostly in the 1940's and 1950's, I sometimes wonder how he would interpret his beliefs for today's audience. Some passages are dated. But overall, the man was a genius, and his guidelines for living are still important to us today.

Though I love C.S. Lewis and always find him intellectually stimulating, I was expecting a much more "devotional" tone to the book. The book is good for a read, but should not be viewed as a morning devotional.

I have always appreciated the gift CS Lewis had for seeing and explaining things in a clear new way. I enjoyed having something to mentally and spiritually chew on each day this past year. Recommended.

I am a C. S. Lewis fan and found this daily compilation to be interesting, thought provoking and challenging. Classic C.S. Lewis. I recently gave it as a gift. If you are looking for a daily read that has depth this is the one.

C. S. Lewis is my mentor in my writing as he says George MacDonald is his. (And George MacDonald has been mine too!) I love A Year with C. S. Lewis because these are doubtless his most loved passages by many readers, and probably the top 365 writings of every thing this great mind has written! This is still the first month of this year in which I bought this book on my Kindle and I have already quoted from him different times, on facebook, and in private personal letters to those I love most. I have learned the dates of which special happenings in his life occurred, and this makes those days more special to me. I recommend this book as highly as I know how to recommend it, to the whole world.

This is my favorite devotional. I read it every night before bed.

Lewis can be a difficult read, and there are some passages that don't sink in right away. But more often than not I'm highlighting at least one or two sentences each day. He makes me question and think, and I don't feel spoon-fed at all.

If you want a great introduction to Lewis or want to get a daily dose of his works, this is a great book.

I received this book as a gift from my spiritual mentor when I became a Christian, and later bought the Kindle version for when I travel. Both are excellent.

Written to challenge thinking on how we see Jesus and Christianity in our present age. Good reading quotes from some of his books to stimulate and review how we are thinking. Good for those willing to wrestle with their own preconceived assumptions.

It's C.S.Lewis. He leads the reader to go deeper in exploring issues. As with all his christian writings, these essays are thought provoking and his positions always clearly explained and defended. A good read .

I admire Lewis as one of the best Christian authors of our time. This book offers the reader the opportunity to enjoy his writing as a daily devotional aid. The selections are well chosen, and just the right length for this purpose. It is a wonderful start to the day!

A great way to stay "in touch" with Lewis throughout the year, especially when you don't have the time to read his works in their entirety. A little Lewis every day is as intellectually and spiritually helpful as daily exercise is physically!

If you enjoy the writings of C.S. Lewis, this is the daily devotional for you. Selected passages from his large volume of works in addition to interesting trivia about Lewis lead to a wonderful way to begin or end your day.

Brilliant writing. Lewis is so smart that he can explain away 2000 years of superstition and persecution in the name of Christianity without breaking a sweat. I have a problem with anyone who claims their way is the only true way. I think a brilliant convert like Lewis may do more harm than good. Obviously just my opinion. Loved his kids books and appreciate his intelligence just not his dogmatism.

I love CS Lewis' writings and think it would do one good to read him regularly. He has a great way of breaking things down without dumbing them down. I also love the fact that he makes a distinction between what he knows and what is his opinion.

That said, this is proof that even Brother Jack needs context to be worth much. His writing lose meaning or take on different meanings with the help of the compiler's daily "titles" for the passages. I would recommend one just read the original writings.

I planned to read this daily and made it about two weeks in. Not due to lack of discipline, but rather lack of interest in the abreviated, ripped out of context snipets.

Sadly, I can only give two stars to "A Year with C. S. Lewis: Daily Readings". The quotes are wonderful, but anyone can peruse CS Lewis books and find quotes; in fact, most people can find his quotes papered all over the Internet; I recommend doing so. I think what I was looking for in this purchase, was some commentary on the quotes. First, to CS Lewis, what surrounded him writing the passage in whichever book, poem or essay? how can I apply this quote to my daily life? A book of daily readings should give you a commentary that helps you go about your day. This one offers none.

I've been a lover of C.S. Lewis (primarily by way of the Chronicles of Narnia) since I was 9 years old (and that was a long time ago; he was still living!). However, I was initially turned off by some of his adult works, which seemed altogether too "smug" to me. My sister gave this book to me for Christmas, and it has opened Lewis back up to me in unexpected ways, prompting me to read his other works that I had neglected for decades.

I've given this book as a gift to others since that time, as I continue to profit from it myself every morning.

There are men and women of great minds that write books that you simply must read. For the cause and subject of Christianity, C. S. Lewis ranks as one the best apologetic minds in all of Christendom.

A Year with C. S. Lewis: Daily Readings from His Classic Works, is exceptional because within it you will find choice writings from other must-read books by C. S. Lewis such as Mere Christianity, The Screwtape Letters, The Great Divorce, The Problem of Pain, Miracles, A Grief Observed, The Weight of Glory, and The Abolition of Man.

Edited and arranged by Patricia Klein, each days reading of a selection of Lewis' works will cause you to remember the book it was quoted from, if you have read it. Book Review of A Year with C. S. Lewis edited by Patricia Klein

If it is the first time you are reading C. S. Lewis, it may cause you to ponder and consider his delightful style, his no-nonsense approach, and his seasoned grasp on the foundations of Christianity.

I have read all the works that this book of meditations draws from, which added great depth to the daily readings. I can mark the time in my life when I read a particular book by C. S. Lewis. It would be hard for me to choose which of his books were my favorite, I would say The Great Divorce and Mere Christianity top my list.

Lewis is profound. Having his works broken down in daily meditations makes his messages easier to digest. Of course, it is always best, at least for me, to have a dictionary handy when reading C. S. Lewis. He was a master of wit and wisdom and it flowed beautifully through his writings.

I recently purchased a eReader and this book was one of the very first ebooks I bought. I recommend it highly for personal use or as a gift. For daily reading and / or meditation, I would rank this compilation very close to Oswald Chambers, My Utmost for His Highest.

C.S. Lewis is valued by many as one of the clearest and most lucid voices of reason in 20th Century Christianity.

Clive Staples Lewis, (Jack to his friends) wrestled as an younger adult with his belief in God, having embraced agnosticism as the only truly valid position to be taken by an intellectually honest person. A highly intelligent man, he could not simply accept on blind faith, the tenets of Christianity. However, in large part due to the influence of fellow literary professor J.R.R. Tolkien, Lewis came to wrestle with Christianity and came to the conclusion that it was indeed rationale and defensible and thus was born a literary and apologetics career that spanned radio programs, children's books, science fiction and several well loved and highly influential apologetic tomes.

This daily reader puts together a wonderful collection of pithy passages and thoughts that will serve as part of a daily devotional regimen (not all of it though ... I suspect Lewis himself would not want reading his works to replace reading Scripture.) Each selection stands well on its own and captures the genius of Lewis in taking an often difficult concept and reducing it to an acecdotal story that bring clarity and understanding.

An excellent collection and a worthy daily regimen.

Offering some real substance in an erudite but humble and humorous style, Lewis stands out from the plethora of dogmatic religious fluff we read. The review by FaithfulReader.com from New York is the best I've read. To emphasize several points:
1. By cutting and pasting from several C. S. Lewis books, this daily reader is somewhat choppy.
2. Although profound, orthodox Christianity, it is not a good devotional. Chris Tiegreen's At His Feet also provides real substance but, unlike A Year with C. S. Lewis, was originally written as a daily devotional.
3. Though the January 15 entry clearly explains that Screwtape is a fictional demon, a reader who doesn't know that and who begins reading at some other date might be confused (as a dear friend of mine was) when the "Enemy" means God, and "Our Father" is Satan. I don't know how to prevent this.
4. For those unfamiliar with C. S. Lewis' works, this daily reader will introduce them to his exceptionally clear and thought-provoking insights, yet expressed with modesty and humor. Some of my favorite gems:
a. On limits of human intelligence: "Of course these conjectures as to why God does what he does are probably of no more value that my dog's idea of what I am up to when I sit and read."
b. On God's perception of time: "The difficulty comes from thinking that God is progressing along the Time-line like us... Suppose God is outside and above the time line?"
c. On experiencing God: "Suppose we really found Him? We never meant it to come to that! `Look out!' we cry, `it's alive!'"
d. On the importance of doctrine: [comparing experiencing the seashore with having a chart] Doctrines are not God: they are only a kind of map. But that map is based on the experiences of hundreds of people who really were in touch with God. If you want to get any further [than experience] you must have a map.
Highly recommended for introducing one to the treasure of C. S. Lewis or reminding his old admirers.

A C. S. Lewis devotee knows that Lewis died the same day as President Kennedy. Though it's not mentioned in the jacket copy --- and the book includes no introduction --- that forty-year commemoration might have been the catalyst for this new compilation of 366 daily readings drawn from what the publisher calls his (capital-letter) Signature Classics: MERE CHRISTIANITY, THE SCREWTAPE LETTERS, THE GREAT DIVORCE, THE PROBLEM OF PAIN, MIRACLES and A GRIEF OBSERVED, plus (apparently perceived in some other category) THE WEIGHT OF GLORY and THE ABOLITION OF MAN.
Drawing on this bank, this book provides food for thought more than for devotion. Readers looking for a devotional aid will need to make a conscious leap to apply the material to a personal line of prayer. And yet the presented theological, philosophical and sociological points, all focused by Lewis's Christian worldview, do serve to draw the reader to a keener awareness of God's presence, character and role; his being, creations and relationships.
The one-page selections have been deftly arranged by Patricia Klein, who in times past edited the annual Cahill calendars featuring quotable lines from Lewis and his Inkling cohorts. She has given each reading a clear but not clever title that orients readers going into a selection and grounds them coming out: "Love the Sinner . . .", "The Real Test", "Nice Is Not Enough", and "How Marriage Reconciles."
Her selections are well organized. Each stands on its own, but many, usually from one source, for four or five days at a time thematically build on one another. We spend a week in March, for example, noting the pitfalls of pride (from MERE CHRISTIANITY) before being introduced to "Humility 101" (from THE SCREWTAPE LETTERS).
Although the first SCREWTAPE entry (January 13) includes a paragraph that explains the first-person, demonist voice of this novel, an unwary reader unfamiliar with that book's tongue-in-cheek style can be confused later on. Trying to head off said confusion, Klein has added an italicized tag onto each SCREWTAPE reading (i.e., "Screwtape reveals a powerful tool for distraction").
I personally connected most with Lewis, the man, in his readings from A GRIEF OBSERVED, in which he mourns the death of his wife. But I also connected with Lewis's God in selections from MERE CHRISTIANITY and THE WEIGHT OF GLORY.
The volume is nicely packaged: a ribbon bound into the spine to mark your place, a table of contents on a part-title page at the beginning of each month, three book-end indices. When I turned a page, I first glanced to the bottom, anticipating an occasional date-specific Lewis-biographical event: a book publication, an academic achievement, a family birth or death --- November 22, 1963, "Lewis dies at 5:30 P.M. at The Kilns, one week short of his sixty-fifth birthday. . . "
Most readings are three, four, five times longer than the one I cite below (September 27), which is the shortest in the book. As compiled in A YEAR WITH . . . Lewis only occasionally quotes Scripture and never more aptly than here, speaking of the apostle Peter's seaside conversation with Jesus: "There are questions at issue between Christians to which I do not think we have been told the answer. There are some to which I may never know the answer: if I asked them, even in a better world, I might (for all I know) be answered as a far greater questioner was answered: 'What is that to thee? Follow thou Me.' "

This is THE book I keep at my bedside and read the page for the day first thing in the morning. He has realistic thoughts about Christianity and faith, good and evil, life and death, how to cope with pain. It seems to help me start the day with some very basic and important concepts. C.S.Lewis has a practical, down-to-earth way of stating his views on the most essential facets of our lives and our struggles. He was a spiritual man who had his feet firmly planted on the ground, while he lived his life and fell in love and suffered great loss. I would recommend this book for anyone who is battling depression or is just seeking answers to daily issues.

If you are familiar with the works of C. S. Lewis, then this book is for you. It contains snippets of trivia about his life in addition to a passage a day from his numerous works. However, I would recommend this book to those who've already read and reflected on at least one of his other books in its entirety. You can then appreciate how Lewis develops his complex thoughts and arguments through many chapters, not just one paragraph. This book of daily readings can then be used as a starting point to refresh you on a bit of insight that will lead you to greater reflection of your faith.

If you haven't read his books, at best you will be piqued by these appetizers to look forward to the entrees of his books. At worst this book of daily readings will be just another collection of daily thoughts.

I love the way C. S. Lewis articulates his thoughts, and it gives me great pleasure when I chew on what he says and gain that insight. I wish other Christian writers today would take the same time to meditate and share their wisdom, instead of churn out book after book that defines today's pop-Christian culture.

This book is a great introduction to the riches of this masterful writer. His most popular works are excerpted, and the daily readings will surely whet the reader's appetite for more.

So many "daily readings" books contain flowery nuggets with very little substance. Here, the editor carefully chooses insights that are intelligent, wise, sometimes funny, and always meaningful. "I never thought of it that way; that makes so much sense," is a refrain one is sure to repeat reading Lewis.

A wonderful primer. I couldn't recommend it more highly.

This devotional is the AMAZING. Each day is interesting, introspective, and super encouraging (in most cases)... I mean, it's CS Lewis, at his best, and segmented in such a creative & perfect way that after 2 or 3 days you'll be excited to read it. When I miss a few days, I gladly read back all the others.

If you're an interesting person, and have a mediocre IQ or better, this will be the most interesting devotional you'll ever use! I highly recommend it!
