Great characters, fast paced and action packed. Fun to read a novel set in Florida with many places familiar to me. This is my first Tom Lowe's novel and I look forward to more (new ones and when his others come to ebooks!)

I was disappointed in this book and glad I purchased it as a "daily deal" and did not pay the full price. The plot was good but it was too sappy for me. The relationship that developed between the main character and the victim's mother was just too quick and intense to believe, no one losing a child would be so keen to dive into a relationship right away. The book just couldn't keep me interested enough in the plot that I could even finish it.

But a bit contrived and predictable. The grammatical errors came at intense times within the story and really detracted from the enjoyment for me anyway.
Also, a bit too trite for a book about killing drug warlords. The dichotomy of being too sensitive while at the same time being ruthless was too extreme to be authentic and believable.

The Butterfly House was a good story with both intrigue and romance. It kept you in the dark about "who did it," and the love story developed quite naturally. The only reason I chose 4 stars rather than 5 was because it wasn't an "I-can't-lay-it-down" scenario, though others may feel this way. A good read overall!

If you like Michael Connelly, James Hall and John D McDonald style books, you will love Tom Lowe's writing. He has three books out and a couple more to come soon. A False Dawn, The 24th Letter, The Butterfly Forest and soon The Black Bullet, all about Sean O'Brien, an ex Miami cop who can't stay away from the hunt for the bad guys. I read all three one after the other and am hooked on this character and Tom's writing. You will be too.

Easy reading page turner with flowing story line...however more attention should be made during proofing process to clean up spelling/grammatical errors which are numerous and annoying...good writing style for this type of action thriller....not too descriptively wordy just to fill pages but has created interesting main characters that are interesting to follow through to other adventures in each book.

Again, another quick read as well as entertaining. I have enjoyed three of Lowe's books, but must admit that the stories seem to be pieced together haphazardly. If O'Brien is being stalked by killers why does he continually use his cell phone without detection? Why would he send out an unarmed target to cross the state alone? Why are most of his villains law enforcement gone bad? Too many details that don't really add up as if they would or could really happened, but again, they are entertaining.

It was very difficult to keep up in the beginning because of so many characters coming into play. I actually read the first 20 chapters twice so I could go back and get the characters straight. This was my first Tom Lowe's mystery and won't be my last. You will be surprised and help captive till the very end.

I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to read the Romance/Mystery novels. It had a lot of twists and turns in the story..........the ending was pretty much what you expect in a book like this. I think if that had been a less predictable ending it would have had a 5 str rating from me. For me that would have made it a book I would be curious to read the next book to see where it would lead the characters. I have no thought to do that with this book.

Once I started, it was hard to put down, I liked the ideas/plot and the characters. coulda been a more fun ending thought, turned into just another cop/detective story and geez, it started out so original in plot!
But, its a goo price and yes, I will buy other work by the author

I usually give every book about 50 pages until I decide if it is worth reading or not. This book was so bad I couldn't even give it a chapter. The plot seems old and tired and jumps around too much to get an idea of where the book is headed. Don't waste your time.

Excellent thriller! The plot is plausible, the characters are well developed and there is even a romantic twist. I loved the inclusion of the mini dachshund; Mr. Lowe's depiction of the accurate personality of a dachshund added a realistic feel to the plot.

This book was fun to read with a strong lead character, a little romance and an exciting storyline. The thing I appreciated most about this book was the lack of profanity and explicit sexual references. I could hardly put this book down. Definitely a good read!

I really did not ex; pect to find this book to be such an intense thriller; thrillers are not my choice and reading the review did not suggest such intensity. However, it started with intensity such that I could not put it down. Anything with butterflies appeals to me.

Tom Lowe is a consistently good writer with fast moving plots and very descriptive surroundings placing the reader directly into the mystery's environment. Potential love interests of O'Brien seem to suffer gruesome ends though. Lighten up a little, Tom.

This was a freebie for Kindle so I was not really expecting much, but I was greatly surprised. This novel had engaging characters, loads of action scenes, twists and turns, and a cute dog. I gave it four stars because at times I did find some of the actions of the hero and his friends a bit unbelievable. But overall I thoroughly enjoyed the story. There were a few formatting problems in the Kindle version, but not enough to hinder the enjoyment.

This is simply OUTSTANDING fiction. Extremely well paced and plotted, with well developed characters. Despite some small quibbles with believability/ overly convenient coincidences, this book is just plain awesome. Lowe is a well polished writer with many of his descriptions and metaphor bordering on the poetic. A highly recommended late night page turner.

This is the first Tom Lowe book I have read. The reviews were good and I enjoy a good mystery thriller. The story line was interesting and enjoyed the setting in central and North Florida since that is my home (almost). The thing that throws me off is the inconsistency of the floral discription and the time line. At first I thought ok he's got north Florida right, the trees that were blooming the flowers ---early spring, then he jumps to summer. The discriptions then didn't fit. Annoying for me but if you don't know the difference or you don't care --it doesn't affect the book or the characters. I liked the book enough to read another of Tom Lowe's.

As a lover of all the national forests I was intrigued by the title. The many aspects of mystery surrounding this forest made for an exciting, if not always pleasant , read. The love story that evolves in the book was a no-brainier but enhanced rather than detracted from the drama. Excellent bad guys and even a bad guy with a changed heart. A hopeful ending brought this adventure to a satisfying conclusion. I will look for more by this author.

I enjoyed the story. It had a good plot, but I found some of the descriptive writing a little annoying. I don't know how old the author is, but I felt as if some of the descriptive writing could have been from a high school writing assignment. It just didn't fit with the tone of the story.

"Butterfly Forest" was my first experience with Tom Lowe. I was immediately "sucked in" and found the story highly imaginable. However, more than SpellCheck is needed for good editing. I found about 5 good and correctly spelled but wrong words scattered throughout the text (e.g., "though" instead of "thought). Proofreading would have caught these grammatical errors. They detract from quality writing.

This was my first time reading a Sean O'Brien novel and I was taken. The plot was well developed and had enough twists to keep my hanging on until the end. From the first book, A FALSE DAWN, to THE BLACK BULLET the author keeps you on your toes with these books. The adventures of Sean O'Brien are by far some of the best reads I have found. The author makes you want to part of the story, to be as one of the friends of O'Brien. I would recommend these books to anyone who is looking for the best read they can find. I can't wait for the 5th book BLOOD OF CAIN to come out.

This book has some good moments, but overall, I felt like I was being educated through a few characters whose sole purpose is to provide historical and scientific information, that I was just bugged out. No pun intended. A decent crime plot with a few holes. I enjoyed the main character and his relationship with the mother of one of the protaganistas. Lots to like here, but also some serious editing flaws.

The hero's expert advice to two women he saved from abduction. " best advice is to be aware of your surroundings. Be cautious. etc.etc. Try to do things in pairs". Wow, this guy knows his stuff ! Another gem..".Molly, if you have to use it (gun), you won't have time to think about it. You're a young women with noble ideas and ideals. People like you are the glue to save the planet" And he just met this girl.
The dialogue is stupid and trite. Character development by someone on speed. I could not read beyond page 39. The author is trying to parse all the elements he read in other popular mystery /thriller books , regardless of quality. Sorry I believed the hype by the book's recommenders. Don't waste you money. Try well written books by Peter Temple, Ian Rankin, Dennis Lehane, George Pelecanos, and even Michael Connolly ( but lately he is losing his edge). The Butterfly Forest: (Mystery/Thriller)

I can't believe the number of good reviews this book has received. I downloaded it onto my Kindle after seeing the star rating.
This book has at least 10 typos/mispelled/misused words (I stopped at 15, so I don't know the real total). Examples: "birth" for what should have been "berth", question mark at the end of a statement, heroin for heron, etc. Very distracting. In addition, Mr. Lowe's style is too flowery for my taste; a good editor would likely have crossed out about half the adjectives and had a better book as an end result. Would not recommend this for anyone.

This is a pretty good book, but there are some major technical flaws. At one point one of the characters shows another how to set the safety on a 38 calibre revolver. There has never been a revolver made with a safety. This kind of clanging error really breaks any spell the writing may have created.

In general the book is too verbose, slinging lots of words that could have been left to a short narration or simply dropped from the book. This is an author in search of a good editor.

Still there was a sound story, some fair, if overdrawn, characters and a decent if somewhat muddled ending. Better than much of what is being published in the mystery genre.

The number of trite plot devices in this novel is astronomical! The main character is a perceptive sharpshooting former cop and soldier, who can run for miles while bleeding profusely, and has a handy native American friend who can listen to nature, and coincidentally can produce a magic poultice out of items he finds in the forest, in the dark.... because he's Seminole, that's why. Our trusty hero also is a hit with all the ladies, can cook, and has a sensitive side, as evidenced by his penchant for contemplating the starry sky, and his dainty weiner dog. (Who, based on the amount of cheese and fried shrimp she is served, is probably in a constant state of canine shart emergency)

Need bad guys killed expediently? A fighter jet will appear! Need a tender moment, at a gravesite? Suspend reality and have the gravestone be magically ready for the funeral of a college student! Need a couple sidekicks? Bring in the hard boozing former fed, and the lady's man Greek (who is a fisherman and can cook... because he's Greek, that's why!) Need a guy to choose life in jail over probable death? Not one, but TWO alligators will make an appearance, to hasten his decision! Of course, our steadfast hero will drop both, with a single shot to each's head, with a sniper rifle, that the police happened to allow him to use, because THAT is a probability. And why does he have to use it? Because a cottonmouth bit the real police sharpshooter. of course!

The ladies are all dewy, for Sean O'Brien. The men of law enforcement naturally hand him a gun. Even his dog recognizes his Alpha superiority, and most likely wants to have his puppies. This is a guy who can contemplate the stars, and the symbolism of a lighthouse one moment, and be driving a jeep with 2 blown tires off-road, over trees (!?) and through brush, and rivers, while bleeding profusely from a through-and-through, checking his GPS AND shifting(!?) and it's only when he hears the animal like sounds of his drug cartel/biker gang pursuers that his "adrenaline kicks in"?

Yeah... Mr. Lowe? Ease up on the action hero movie tropes, just a little bit. Your editor is SORELY letting you down.

I have to agree with some of the other reviewer's comments about words misspelled and somewhat simplistic writing, but I was more bothered by the fact that this author, like many successful authors writing these types of books, do not understand very much about guns. People who write books about crime or the military often must assume the readers are ignorant about the basic facts about firearms. On page 235 of The Butterfly Forest, Mr. Lowe writes "It's a loaded .38 caliber. It holds six shots. I took the pistol out of the holster and showed her where to find the safety." This is in obvious reference to a .38 caliber revolver. Revolvers do not have a safety. Since those of us who read these types of books pay good money to do so, I wish the authors would take the time and effort to better research the topics about which they write.

I'm now about halfway through book 8 of the series and I've noted a great deal of improvement in the editing as the series progressed.

Of all the books in the Sean O'Brien Series this one is the darkest. It was, in my mind, so dark that I have trouble even recommending it and that, from me, is saying a lot.

"Evil", it has been said, "wears many faces" (or words to that effect) and in one portion of this book that form of evil appears. It was, and is, worrisome to me (and I'm by no means easily bothered).

I'm not going to say more on this other than to advise one to read it with this caution in mind...Other than this one issue I found it well written, suspenseful, and quite readable.

I am now hooked on Tom Lowe's Sean O'Brian series featuring the ex-Miami cop trying to make a life away from his former profession by taking up the role as a charter boat fishing captain. So far, dear reader, thankfully for us, he has failed to do just that. Think how dull his books would be otherwise. In this installment, Sean is at it again assisting a damsel in distress who is attacked in a shopping center parking lot. From there, the mystery and the death toll climbs as Sean and his faithful dockside companions take on another case in spite of the objections of the bumbling authorities.

A word of caution, if you are new to Mr. Lowe's O'Brian, stop now, and go back to the first novel in the series and start there. While the continuity is not an issue, it will provide you with the full pleasure of meeting Sean and his companion Max from the beginning. Mr. Lowe....please, please, keep the Sean O'Brian series coming. A loyal fan.

Sometimes thrillers get too thrilling. This is one of those times. Perfectly set in and around the Ocala National Forest some visitors observe a summer solstice ritual. After that there is one dead body. Then there is a appears to be a carjacking and kidnapping of a mother and her college student daughter, only its thwarted by Sean O'Brien, ex-sniper, ex-Miami-Dade homicide detective who has two houses including one on a boat in a marina just like Travis McGhee who created the role of Florida salvage consultant /amateur detective. O'Brien, less convincingly, follows in that tradition.

As the novel processes, the bodies pile up and up and the villains get nastier and stranger. Enough said.

Sean O'Brien saves a woman, Elizabeth, and her daughter, Molly, from a kidnapping at gun point in broad daylight. After the kidnapper is captured, Elizabeth and Molly start to relax. Molly is in her last year of college and she wants to finish her butterfly project. Luke, who is just released from prison, is in the Ocala National forest and witnesses some strange incidents, along with the murder of Molly and her boyfriend, Mark. Why has this project to help nature become so dangerous? Along with murder, this Sean O'Brien mystery also deals with drugs and smuggling. This story is good reading from beginning to the very end.

Tom Lowe is a gifted writer who laces his suspense novels with passages of great beauty. He knows the setting of his stories well and describes Florida with affection and authenticity at the same time that he keeps you sitting on the edge of your seat with the fast paced action of the plot. A great read on all counts.

I got this book based on the great reviews. However, it did not live up to my expectations. The writing is good, the story not so much. A few things were the outright unbelievable scenarios. For example (and not a spolier) the main character had to find a business that there are hundreds of and he found the right one on the second try. This guy is so lucky and he is so talented in ways that just save the day. Also, his friends are so resourceful and connected. It is all so convenient. The story is set in Florida so expect a snake and alligator... in the same chapter. I really tried to like this book and I begrudingly finished it. The ending again, not realistic. Sorry not a good choice. For those going by good ratings like I did please take my review into consideration I trusted the good reviews.

I am so thrilled to have found Tom Lowe. This is the second of his books I have read and it was SO good. Again I thoroughly enjoyed both the characters and the story. The good guys are good and the bad guys are terrible! I am getting absolutely attached to the characters and am looking forward to reading all of the Sean O'Brien series. I particularly liked the mystical/ whimsical butterfly thread that both ran through and connected everything in this story. Happy to recommend....

For a light read, this is an okay book. If I were the author, however, I would be livid at the number of typos in the Kindle edition . . . absolutely unbelievable (how many times have you seen pedals on a flower?). The plot is not bad and the author has a knack for colorful descriptions of nature, albeit somewhat strange given the nature of the hero. He is a Travis McGee type of ex-policeman, living on his boat or his cabin in Florida. Why do ex-policemen have to judge most other cops as either inept or on the take? Anyway, if you like adventure (with a little sex thrown in) you might just enjoy this book. I did rather have difficulty with a recently bereaved mother throwing herself at our hero almost at first meeting. Caveat emptor!

I downloaded The Butterfly Forest as a free Kindle book. I always try to review these free books to help the authors. This was my first book by Mr. Lowe and I chose it based on the subject matter and locale. I really enjoyed the descriptions and details about the National Forest and of course the endangered butterflies. In addition to being an enjoyable and riveting read, this book was also a nice commentary on the greed and disregard for nature by men. I thought the plot was exciting, the characters well developed, and the prose engaging. It was more than just another thriller. I will definitely read more books by Mr. Lowe.

The prose is SO flowery and overblown, and the dialogue for the most part is nothing like people actually speak. I forced myself to finish it cause I stuck with it far enough that I wanted to see how it ends, but no way would I read it again, much less suggest it to someone else. I in no way understand the high praise others have given this book.

This is the third book in this series, and it's difficult to believe but it is the best of the three. Tom Lowe consistently comes up with fresh ideas for story plots and that is difficult with all the fiction written today. His characters are crisp and real, his dialogues seem dead on, and in his first and 3rd books the ending are great and unpredictable. All three of his books so far are very entertaining which is my highest praise.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Probably not great fiction, but definitely an enjoyable reading experience. I ordered it because it had great reviews and I knew it was set in Florida. When I found out it was set in Central Florida I was delighted - was such fun reading about places I knew like the St. John's River, Ocala Forest, Cedar Key and Ponce Inlet. The Ocala National Forest is only a few miles from my home and I shall never think of it the same again. I'm definitely going to try another of his books.

Wonderful book! Great writing, compelling characters - top notch thriller. Author Tom Lowe is an excellent writer. His background of working for newspapers is evident in his writing style. He knows how to write a short-concise sentence that grabs and holds you. Protagonist Sean O'Brien is a world-class hero - as good as, if not better, then Jason Bourne or anyone else. Can't wait to read Lowe's other books.

Love, love, love Tom Lowe's writing style! I also love this series very much. Keeps me guessing all the while keeps me relaxed as I feel like I can feel the water from the boat and from the cottage in the woods!!!

On the first page, two characters are walking through the forest. A reference to time of day is made that it is morning. On the second page, it is again stated that it is morning. But on the third page, the female character looks at her cell phone clock and suddenly it is 4:45 P.M. and going to be getting dark soon. Huh?

I continued on, but more errors followed and the story was very boring and predictable. Not sure where all the 5-star reviews came from on this one. I couldn't even finish it - it's too long and needs a lot of editing.

Yes, I enjoyed the book tremendously, the story was great, the characters as well defined and vivid as any on paper. The detail was amazing and transport the reader to exactly where the author wants him or her to be. An edge of your seat thriller in spots, a tear jerking tragedy in others, a Twain-esque adventure, a nature walk, a history lesson... this book is so many things in one, all intricately and cleverly woven together.

What really sets this book apart, far apart from others in its genre, is the beautifully poetic way the author describes the locations, the scenes, the people and their relationships.

I really enjoyed this book. It is the third, I think, that I have read in order of publication. His characters are very entertaining and the bad guys are always just SO BAD!.. I just started BLACK BULLET and expect another entertaining ride. Keep the characters going. I know much excitement lies ahead.

I've read several of the Sean O'Brien series, and have yet to be disappointed. Tom Lowe is great at his descriptions, and especially with Max, the best supporting character. Who'd a thought a Dachshund could be so expressive.

Just a note, I worked with a man by the name of Tom Lowe for over twenty
years.

I recently downloaded The Butterfly Forest by Tom Lowe to my Kindle and it hooked me right from the start; I've finished reading it but it hasn't let me go. Lowe brilliantly weaves together multiple plotlines that converge in a calamitous destiny of wrong places and right times. All of his characters are richly fleshed out as he deftly brings them to life (and death, for some) in this compelling thriller. The interactions between and among his characters are not only plausible, but poignantly realistic. Sean O'Brien is earning the right to join my other friends, Harry Bosch, Paul Madriani and Oliver Stone, on my bookshelf. --Edye Dama, Atlanta
