JR Ward creates a highly exciting world in which the vampires are not the bad guys and in this incarnation are trying to protect their world from the enemy - the albino Lessers. Its based around the Black Dagger brotherhood - vampires bred specifically as warriors to protect their people and is the story of their lives - their highs, their lows, their triumphs and their failures. Each character is meticulously crafted and stands out from the page as real as if they were standing in front of you and you'd just been introduced. Although the base storyline is simplistic, the side stories grip your attention and hold you as you avidly devour book after book, putting the last one down with true sadness as you have to wait until next year to find out what happens next to our brothers. An incredible read and should appeal to anyone fond of the modern vampire - such as Twilight, the Anne Rice Novels, Vampire Diaries....need I go on?

What can I say about these books and this series...they are made of AWESOMESAUCE! I am deeply in love this series and I am truly addicted. If you are going to read, please save yourself the time and effort and just buy the series. There is no way you can just buy the first book and that is all.
You will not be sorry. JR Ward rocks!

It is funny...if I happen to be in a bookstore and I see these books...I take the time to straighten them out and put them in order and display them. I love to pimp out this series. I would look hilarious on hidden camera. lol

I would love to talk about how much I enjoy this series, but suddenly on page 84 of Lover Eternal, the second book in the box series, there was a very messed up error; specifically the NEXT PAGE was page 21 -- and then it continued from 21 to 52 (which I had already read)... then at 52 jumped to page 117.

Nowhere in the book were the missing pages. O.o

And I don't know yet, as I was reading book two, and I don't want to spoil anything for myself, if any of the other volumes are similarly made - with missing chunks of pages, and duplicate earlier pages in their place.

I called in to customer service, pretty angry because... well, if I explain why, it will be a spoiler. But those of you who enjoy these books know how frustrating it is to be pulled out of the story when you're enjoying it and immersed in the world of the book - and for an incorrectly put together paperback? Where was quality control on this one?

The customer service person arranged for a new set to be sent and arrive the next day - and I will see if it indeed does, because I paid 1 day shipping on the box set, it's fair to have the replacement sent the same way, and I only hope that the new one will be better.

I'll amend this review up to 4 stars when I get the replacement, IF the new volume of the book and the subsequent books have all their pages.

I realize this isn't the author's fault, but there is no way to clarify quality of content from the actual item itself.

On a review level, I could do without the over-the-top slang. "True?" for "Okay?" is... well, doesn't ring true. Similarly, I would have liked to have had some explanation - maybe it's coming - but something to explain why the names of the Brothers are ... as they are. Rage? Fury? Sadist? Hollywood? Torment? -- Darius is a name, why do the rest of them have names that aren't, but are instead qualities.

I could make an argument for these being their "warrior" names and each exemplifying the foremost warrior trait -- but that wasn't given as an explanation in book one where it should have been, in my view, been, to forestall exactly the reaction that I had to the naming convention, specifically, what is up with these names? (and yes I spelled the words correctly, but "Rhage" is Rage" and Zsadist is Sadist or "Phury" is clearly Fury.

It could be, indeed is, an interesting conceit but it needed explanation, and from the start to forestall that "what the.. why are they named this way?" - and some of the dialogue would benefit from a bit less of that faux gangbanger speak.

True? ;)

** Update

Updated to 4 stars. It was handled very well, the customer server rep had a new boxed set mailed overnight, I received it the next day, and so far it seems to have all its pages where they should be - I'm on book three so far. (ah well, Carrie Vaughn's new book came out and I started another series at the same time ;) I was given a link to a free return label, just dropped it off at a UPS drop off center and done, no fee since it was their flaw. All in all, other than the first boxed set not having the flaw, it was taken care of as well as it could have been - no temporary billing pending receiving the set back, the customer service rep believed me (or perhaps others had had the same problem so he knew it was legitimate) but either way, the store did well with the immediate replacement and return.

I am enjoying the books, but still find myself having issues with the slang when it gets out of hand. Anyone else?

I loved this box set! I enjoyed the way the author
led into each different novel while keeping up with past
story lines. There were definately some twists and turns.
Now my neighbor is hooked. I would definately
recommend these novels to anyone who has a little
thing for vampires, or women searching for
some raw romance.

J.R. Ward is my favorite author. Her books are like a drug addiction. Once you crack open her book, you can't put it down until it's finished. So don't plan on having a life this weekend if you start reading, you'll be couped up in the house until they're all finished. And she'll keep you wanting for more!!!

Six books for less than $30, What can I say? It's an awesome price, and I thought I give this author and series a try. I have to say I'm not captivative. I like the author's sense of humor but the characters are often time immatured and wimpy. The first book, Dark Lover was not a bad start but I had a hard time getting through it. Rhage and Mary was a little pathetic, and oh my god--I waited and was so excited for Z's story and what a huge disappointment. He was WEAK! WEAK! So very unlike the character that was portray so strongly, so dangerous in the previous books. I felt cheated! I felt like crying.

I want to say thank you to all the reviewers who were kind enough to share their favorite books and authors--I am grateful because through you, I was able to find one of my favorite books. To return the favor, here are my recommendations:
Kresley cole: The Immortal Series
Julie Garwood: Oh my GOd! The Goddess of Historical Romance--You will not regret reading her books. Try out her Highlander hunks (The Bride, The Prize, etc...)
Nalini Singh-the Pys Series
Gena Showalter: Lord of the Underworlds

These books are so awesome. My daughter devoured them and is on the final book. They are very very steamy so if you are looking for Twilight, look elsewhere. These are very graphic but I'm not into tame vampires. Enjoy.

Each story is about a conflicted alpha male vampire dealing with his emotional baggage while fighting a enemy determined to annihilate their race. Lots of action, emotional drama, and sizzling sex scenes. Lots of annoyances as well! Most annoying was the character dialogue which was a eye-rolling cross between street slang and Valley girl. A minor annoyance was that in each book, the male always found his soul mate at first sight without any development of the relationship. If these were my stories to tell, I would have spent more time developing the romance. I would have written Mary's character more likable and would have written Vishous' and Jane's story entirely differently. But then again it was not my story to write. In spite of all the annoyances, these books were an immensely entertaining read and you can't beat the price of this boxed set!

I guess I am too much of a Twilight fan, but these characters and their relationships just didn't do it for me. I thought a lot of the relationships developed out of nowhere and the dialogue was "cheesy" at best. Vampires are hundreds of years old and the way they talk in this book just was not believable to me. This is a nice beach read, but I didn't find it as great as my neighbor told me she thought it was!

After seeing that this boxed set had 5 star reviews, I thought these books would be great! I was only able to get through the first 8 chapters of the first book...and it was forceful reading after the first couple chapters in hopes of great entertainment soon to come...not the case. My suggestion would be to check out the first book in this series at your local library; if you love it-get the set.

I can't figure out how to classify this series. Is it a romance? Is it a thriller? It is definitely paranormal. JR Ward's webiste lists a review that calls this series "genre-bending." I think that is an appropriate classification. These books include love, action, killing and a little mystery. It's a nice mix!

Each book tells the story of one member of the brotherhood. By the way, none of these guys are actually brothers, just brothers-in-arms, so to speak. The brother featured in each book goes through personal trials and usually ends up finding his true love by the end. I like a series where each book can stand on its own and you can read them out of order without getting totally confused. I wouldn't recommend reading these out of order because they do build on each other a little, and you will have some plot spoilers as to who ends up with whom.

One thing I'm really enjoying about my foray into the paranormal genre is how each author "feeds" the vampires. Example: Stephenie Meyer's vampires drink blood only and drink to kill. Darren Shan, PC Cast, and Richelle Mead's "good" vampires eat food and drink little bits of blood. Richelle Mead's "bad" vampires drink blood from the "good" vampires and drink to kill. In the Black Dagger Brotherhood, the vampires eat food and drink little bits of blood from each other occasionally. That's a new twist on the feeding issue---they don't drink from humans at all. In fact, they pose no danger to humans and their existence is dedicated to protecting humans from the lessers (the soulless bad guys).

I would be remiss if I didn't warn you that The Black Dagger Brotherhood has a LOT of sex in it. Each book gets pretty graphic at least three to four times. It's not as raunchy as Richelle Mead's Georgina Kincaid series, but if Twilight is PG, Georgina Kincaid is an adult video, then Black Dagger Brotherhood would be an HBO series, if you get my drift. Also, the books include a lot of bad language. I can't decide which number is higher: the number of f-bombs in one of the Black Dagger Brotherhood books or the number of Cadbury mini eggs I ate at Easter. Suffice it to say, there's a lot of each! This series is NOT for a younger audience.

Overall, I really enjoy these books. The plots are very good and I think JR Ward is a good writer. The books keep me guessing, which I love. If you read Dark Lover (book 1) and aren't impressed, keep reading. The other books are much better.

Just One Gripe:
I'm so tired of reading about the brothers' boots. Why does Ward keep calling them "shit-kickers"??? I get that they wear big, clunky, manly-man boots, okay? You don't have to keep telling me about their "shit-kickers"!

The Best Thing About This Series:
I like reading about "good" vampires.

First, I just want to say, I highly recommend this entire series, J.R. Ward is a creative writer and I can't wait for each new book that she adds to the series.
When I saw the reviews for this series, I was almost put off due to the warning of bad language, not that I'm a prude, but because of the fact that these days, the "shock factor" seems to be so popular to the point of nothing else matters...
However, the majority of reviews went on to say that the books we're worth reading...

After getting past the fact that there is "bad language", I realized it fit the storyline, because the characters we're, after all, "warriors on steroids", and more, including a sense of humor, loyal, extremely romantic, compassionate... and with each book, you get to meet each one of them and their in depth story of how they find their true love and how their troubled pasts has molded them into the men they turned out to be... It's steamy, adventurous and each book is extremely hard to put down because I couldn't wait to see what happened next...

This series of books is everything you could ask for in a romance novel and when I got to the the last book that's available at this time, "Lover Mine", I found myself saddened to realize I'd have to wait until next year, before I'd be able to continue on...

So....What can I say about the Black Dagger BrotherHood Series? It is probably the BEST romance series I have ever read. Yes it has VAMPIRES. Yes it has EXTREME romance situations. Yes it goes BEYOND the limits....and YES this is what makes it so fascinating!! Each book is a story about one "brother" finding his eternal love, partner, soul-mate. Each book is filled with passion, humor, adventure, and yes...Pain...But this is just the beginning. I read each book and hurt..literally hurt when it is over...(my husband does too..LOL) I know that if you want to read a series and really "Feel" what the characters are going thru then this is your series. I really hope you will give it a chance and I promise you wont regret it....

Some of my favorite quotes:

"Welcome to the wonderful world of jealousy, he thought. For the price of admission, you get a splitting headache, a nearly irresistable urge to commit murder, and an inferiority complex. Yippee."
J.R. Ward, Dark Lover

"I was dead until you found me, though I breathed. I was sightless, though I could see. And then you came...and I was awakened."
J.R. Ward, Lover Awakened

I absolutely love the entire BDB series. I have read every book in the series and at the end of the last book I was as in love with the series as I was the day I started reading. Each book has its own story while still following the main theme flawlessly. Ward is a phenominal writer and she isn't afraid to use common slangs and dialects, which make it seem up to date and interesting.

Often times when you read a romance novel you get that cheesy, I have read this before feeling. That couldn't be farther from the truth with BDB. Ward puts just enough action to keep it interesting, love to keep you melting, and conflict to keep you on the edge.

In each book a different Brother is brought to the forefont and his life is disected and examined. Each brother has his own demon, some more literal than others, and each one has to face those demons in order to find love or accept the love that is right in front of him.

As each book progresses a new character is introduced or an old one is brought into the spotlight a little more than before, helping prepare you for the stories to come. The transition from book to book is seamless. I have yet to feel like I didn't get my fix of BDB.

I've read each book in the series at least twice! A couple of them three times! I absolutely love it!! I know it's not real life, but a girl can wish! yup, i want my own personal vampire!

JR Ward takes you into a world of powerful vampires, that are funny, sexy, loving, caring, strong, psychotic, but down right stand up dudes! All of the characters are true, and in the right place for the series. JR Ward is witty, and funny and down right serious about these brothers and there world! I can see them and everything about them as I read! She takes you there making you want more! I can see everything from the mansion, Zero Sum, love the leathers, daggers and shitkickers!

Thank you, thank you, JR for your brilliant mind! You take me away from the hum drum of my work day, to bubbles and froth....and I'm loving every minute of it!

Love the BDB series!! The brothers and the women are all great in their own right. My favorites of these 6 had to be Book 3 & 4.

Book 3 Lover Awakened
Zsadist peaks your curiosity in the first two books of this series and boy does the novel dedicated to he and Bella reward your interest. Always a sucker for the hardened wounded bird that everyone has given up on, I simply could not get enough. The story sends you on an emotional rollercoaster as Z deals with his demons and finally gets a chance at a happy life with the wonderful Bella. Her story is just as emotional and she is one of my favorite female characters. Imo, this book is the best written of the series and does not sidetrack excessively as some of the later novels do

Book 4 Lover Revealed
I wasn't sure what to think as I was about to begin the 4th installment of this series. Especially with Butch being a human and not a member of the brotherhood. I loved his character but his own book? I wasn't sure how it would fit in. I couldn't have been more wrong. Beautiful and very interesting story. Butch's character is beyond fantastic. One of my top three guys. Marissa's character grows tremendously and is quickly a favorite. Butch and Vichious relationship was complicated and wonderful as well. Loved this addition to an already set of great books.(less)

I purchased these separately as they were published but will rate as the box set because they are all fantastic! I absolutely enjoyed the writing, the characters, the romance and the brotherhood. It left me with a sense of longing to belong to something so fierce and committed.

Good vs Evil - Brood of huge vampire hunks are actually the good guys. JRW gave these warriors distinct personalities and their inner character was portrayed to the point that I felt as though I knew them personally. Their interaction with each other and those around them was enjoyable as well.
I have to admit that the "bad guys" and their tale was a tad boring for me but, of course, is needed. I've read some reviews knocking the slang. It really didn't bother me one way or another. Once I was into the story, it all fell into place.

Best, for me, was RHAGE aka Hollywood - absolutely had all the attributes of the other books but by far funnier than hell too! Worse so far - Book 7 Rhevenge. It didn't grab me like the others and I can't begin to tell you how aggravating it is that the paperbacks come out nearly a year after the hard copy (of course I bought the hard back immediately). I cannot wait for Book 8 -- soon but not yet. In the meantime I think I'll do Book7 one more time....maybe it was just me! Probably going to have to purchase this set because my originals are still "out" being read by others. They've gone through at least 5 others so far - my 20yr old and all her friends are true fans so these books really do span the ages!

Love the Brotherhood and, if you like paranormal, passionate love & fighting along with allegiance and true loyalty - you'll like this!

I'm in love with each of the guys in this series. Each book tops the next when I think it's impossible to do so, each story pulls me into their world with such vivid detail that it's not for the weak of heart!
I'm in my 30's and have many MANY adult female friends from their 20s - 70s that giggle with glee when we discuss the hotness of this series. Serious H.O.T.N.E.S.S

I thought the books okay but stopped reading after the 5th book. The scribe virgin and Omega are way too out there to understand. The deities are too unbelievable. Yes the relationships are okay but it also gets annoying when the people involved don't communicate or discuss adequately. They are like junior high relationships. I think there could be more story involved or explanation of the continuing battle. How did it start? What is the ultimate goal besides destroying each other? Anyway, it is a good story but I lost interest after awhile. It is much the same.

I am someone who has to read and after reading every Nora Roberts and Sandra Brown book needed some exitement. I moved on to paranormal romance and got hooked on Christine Feehans Dark series which are very good. Next was the J.R. Ward series and I have to say that since i got it a year ago I've read the series twice since then. I would definately recomend this series, especially after trying to read a hundred other authers who try and write paranormal and just can get it right. You wont be disapointed.... BUT READ THEM IN ORDER!

I first learned of the Black Dagger Brotherhood series from a friend; at first I wasn't optimistic about whether or not I would like the series. After all, what you're friend likes may be different compared to what you like. But it turns out the my friend was right; I fell in love with the Black Dagger Brotherhood. The way the J.R. Ward delivers the action and romance is amazing! The action and romance are so balanced that you won't know what's on the next page. For all you know it could be both. And after reading the first chapter and have fallen for the Brotherhood you'll be hoping that the next page is a mixture of both. So do youself a favor and get the box set. After you've fallen for the Brotherhood you can just move on to the next book in the series instead of waiting to get to the book store or library. If you think about it you're saving you're self time and the suspense that is most likely "killing you". WARNING: THIS BOOK IS FILLED WITH INTENSE VAMPIRE ACTION THAT WILL HAVE YOU HOOKED; POSSIBLY EVEN OBSESSED. Just kidding. But seriously, buy the series. You won't regret it.

I have read and reread these books. I strongly recommend them above any other vampire or romance series. I love getting lost in a book, in a story and in well created characters. J.R. Ward provides that in such a smart way that you can't help but get drawn in and stay up late turning page after page to see what comes next! I'm now reading the 'Twilight' series that's so popular but still like J.R. Ward's work better. I consider these a must read. -JB

This is a fantastic series full of great action, erotic scenes and detailed story lines. Each book focuses on a main character from the Brotherhood as well as his intended mate. There is also a lot of backstory involving other characters. Most all the characters are likable and well thought out. I couldn't put these books down and read all 6 books in 1 week. A very good read. The next book is really good too!

I read the first four of the series of six so far. These books are truly page turners. You get sucked into the universe Ward created and care for most of the characters. The love interests are developed well (with occasional cheesy lines but you go along with it) and you can't get enough of them.

On the flipside, here is why I did not give five stars:The "street" slang the brothers are speaking really irritated me, as it didn't sound genuine at all. I live in New York and hear a fair amount of "street" slang, and it does not sound like this. (Questions ending with "..., true?" Who talks like that?) Also, I am not sure if Ms Ward knows what blunts are. Usually they are not made with rolling paper. True connosseurs of rap music, even gangsta rap, would probably find something better to listen to than D-12... Ms Ward needs a "street editor" if she wants to continue this, but also, why do centuries old vampires act like that anyway? I am not usually a romance genre reader, and it also bothered me a bit that every book seemed to follow a similar pattern in terms of the main love interests, and have a happy happy ending where most loose ends were tied.

Having said all this, I read four books in 6 days, so clearly I liked it.

BDB is about vampires who were born and raised to be the strongest worriors of there kind 2 protect the race from the lessers who is the UNDEADs.... but the humans are not allowed 2 know about them or the ever lasting war thats been going on... as the story goes on.. each of the brothers ends up finding their one special person that was meant for them alone and ends up bonding with them, which is basically a "FOREVER MINE" type of deal..... but man, i must say.. this book has got me so sensitive in areas i can't even say and man i would love to find my MR BLACK DAGGER BROTHERHOOD hubby... *giggles*...BDB has been the first book i've ever read, and since then i've had my head stuck in books like NO BODYZ BIZNES....lol... the love senses are awesome and i just love how the characters are so sarcastic and tough, but yet have the ability 2 be the lover every woman dreams of ever having...

Just putting it out there to other commenters who were whining about some of the dialogue and spelling of names: GET OVER IT!!! Each new generation both changes slang and spelling of names. Use your brain and expand your knowledge base it doesn't hurt in fact it kind of tickles.

J.R. Ward is an amazing writer. I just finished reading all of her books one by one. Her stories are great, they flow from book to book, the characters have depth, are well thought out and believable. Having said that, I really enjoyed reading her stories with the one exception of her dialogue. J.R. uses so many acronyms and inappropriate slang it just got worse and worse as she progressed through the series. It was so disappointing. If you are the type of reader that ignores things you don't understand - great. I am not that reader. I had to actually go online to an acronym sight to look up some them. HSIC? PTSD? BMOC? I lost count of how many she uses, it was ridiculous. In addition, she makes up her own slang. "sitch" for situation, "stitties" for stilettos, "B" for Bentley, "abso" for absolutely, "epi" for episode, "tourni" for touriquet, "'za" for pizza, "res" for residence, "packy" for package. It was downright irritating and lazy. One of the worse offenses was when King Wrath and one of the warriors said "I'm outtie"....really? That does not bring to mind a warrior or a leader of a race, rather Brittney Murphy in "Clueless". If you can get past it, her stories are great. I personally will not read another book of hers or recommend them to anyone. And I think her editor should be fired!(If anyone at Penguin reads these!)

This is a great series, I love that with every book I find I'm changing my mind on which Brother is my favorite!(think I have decided on Vishous! lol) but really the stories are great the characters are all interesting..I didn't really care for the Mr.X..Mr.O...Mr.Whatever.. parts I would just skim over them to get back to "the good parts"

I was quick to recieve my order and it was amazing! I would recommend this box set to anyone and have done so on multiple accounts. Each book is unique in its own way yet still holds true to J.R. Ward's writing style, which just happens to be amazing.

This is a very good set. I wish the store would carry it on CD. The theme of the Black Dagon Brotherhood is exceptional, and every story (Book) rapes around each other to form a family history. Great books. Greater story.

Hmmm, a child of "Twilight" and "Letters to Penthouse" would be the best way to describe it. Get ready for dark handsome 7 feet tall men who would sweep you all your feet and awaken dark and forbidden desires in you, while fighting the army of some pale faced half and light haired Omega slaves. Donno, beginning was promising but then it all just went no where.

These are the best books i have ever read. Not written for teens like twilight, would not recommend for that age group. But for the adult reader they are the best. Full of action and passion. Great read from the first book to the last.
