This provided most of the information I was looking for, although a bit right wing, "America is best" at times. Next time I go through it I need to have an atlas by my side! A couple of references to things I was unsure about (eg someone's act of treason) without further illucidation. Great to include the constitution, and a clever idea to stop it at 1920. It certainly helps me getter a better understanding of American culture.

Being a horrible student in high school I have always been interested in improving my knowledge of history. This book has definitely helped. The only downside I saw was at the end of each chapter there was a series of questions and further reading suggested. That made me think too much and so I just read on.
Excellent content and research.

Excellent account of the colonists who came to America and subsequent events. Unlike many history texts that focus mostly on "places and dates", this book covers the trends and, for lack of a better term, "the big picture". It begins with an account of what kind of people emigrated to America and which "old world" countries they left and why. While I count myself as an avid reader (and student) of history, especially American; this book has elucidated the background of some developments which I had never before understood as clearly. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading about American History.

History of the United States by Charles A. Beard and Mary something, was disappointing. There were factual errors and spelling errors. I would cringe every time they misspelled Puerto Rico. This book is also outdated. Don't bother reading this book.

First of all, I am not a member of the new crop of historical revisionists and apologists for the 19th and 20th century "Imperialism" of the United States. However, the imformation in this historical text will likely appeal to only those who prefer the writing style and historical characterizations of generations past. Given that, the price is great (free to Kindle Prime members) so it is hard to argue against taking a look, anyway.

This is a loooonnnnggg book.It may take me two hundred years to get through.... But it is interesting, especially if you love history. I just wanted kind of an overview so it is a bit detailed for me. I feel like I am reading a text book and there are questions at the end of every chapter. I will not be answering those. I am trying to retain the interesting facts so I can whip them out at dinner parties and trivia games.

Pretty decent little book to help the kids write a report with for sources. I can't have any complaints since I got it for free.
I would have given it a higher rating if it would have had more little additional bits of information about various topics in American History.
Anyway if you need an additional book source this is perfect.

i read one of charles Beards history books when i was a child long, long ago.I was impressed with it at age 12 not so much anymore. This is a history book with a definite conservative slant.Jefferson and madison are hardly mentioned but Alexander hamilton gets full coverage the first 50 pages. One would have thought he wrote the constitution instead of Madison with all the praise heaped on him..The capitalist are given much praise while nasty working people, socialist and reformers are derided or given short shift.Charles Beard for those who don't know was a historian in the 1900 to 1920s famous for his economic interpretation of events so this reprint of one of his early history books only goes up to the end of WW1

Purchased as a writer's reference, History of the United States serves the purpose of providing a skeletal account of US History. It allows the reader to categorize significant influences and events, and cherry pick for further reading. I don't find the homework questions at the end of sections to be helpful, but others may, especially publishers of educational material and history curriculum developers.

The author presents the case that were it not for the government and the unions this country could not achieve financial and social equality. In truth much of the progress this country has enjoyed was in spite of the unions and special interest groups and when the government got out of the way and allowed growth to occur. Capitalism seems to be missing from this history, maybe I missed it.

Originally written as a textbook, this book is a good introduction to American history from its founding to the 19th century. It discusses history not in a strictly chronological manner, but more thematically, which gives meaning to many facts that would otherwise be disconnected. This no doubt makes for a more subjective viewpoint, showing how Charles and Mary Beard interpreted causes and effects in history. But it also creates a much greater interest in history as something that actually matters.

As the authors explain in the Preface:

First. We have written a topical, not a narrative, history. We have tried to set forth the important aspects, problems, and movements of each period, bringing in the narrative rather by way of illustration.

Second. We have emphasized those historical topics which help to explain how our nation has come to be what it is to-day.

Third. We have dwelt fully upon the social and economic aspects of our history, especially in relation to the politics of each period.

Fourth. We have treated the causes and results of wars, the problems of financing and sustaining armed forces, rather than military strategy. These are the subjects which belong to a history for civilians. These are matters which civilians can understand--matters which they must understand, if they are to play well their part in war and peace.

Fifth. By omitting the period of exploration, we have been able to enlarge the treatment of our own time. We have given special attention to the history of those current questions which must form the subject
matter of sound instruction in citizenship.

Sixth. We have borne in mind that America, with all her unique characteristics, is a part of a general civilization. Accordingly we have given diplomacy, foreign affairs, world relations, and the reciprocal influences of nations their appropriate place.

Seventh. We have deliberately aimed at standards of maturity. The study of a mere narrative calls mainly for the use of the memory. We have aimed to stimulate habits of analysis, comparison, association, reflection, and generalization--habits calculated to enlarge as well as inform the mind.

As a non-American, I especially appreciated the sixth point: that it put the United States in the context of world history, particularly in its interplay with Europe.

I will certainly recommend the book to my own children once they reach the appropriate age.

Beautifully written history book that reads like a novel. I was pleasantly surprised to see it mention the role of faith in the formation of the USA - well worth reading for history buff or would serve as excellent curriculum material for faith based schools.

The Beards were socialists, and that is the political orientation of this book. There is nothing superb about it, many facts are false of twisted out of shape, and all the reader gets is propaganda. I recommend this book to no one, and it should be removed for all K-12 schools. It can be used in colleges along with Schweikart's A Patriot's History of the United States, so the students can judge for themselve the depth of penetration of the socialist establishment in the U.S.
