When I bought this book, I did not realize this was a combined sequel to Say Yes to the Marquess AND the Spindle Cove series, all of which I absolutely love. As usual, Ms. Dare tells a wonderful story. I was so glad to read Charlotte and Piers' happily ever after.
The books in the Castles Ever After series have had a lot of humor in them and this book was no different. There were several laugh out loud moments that I highlighted and kept going back to:
Before Charlotte figures out Piers is a secret agent of the Crown of England, she tells him he needs a little intrigue in his life.
Charlotte makes a comment about Piers' "masculine lip elixir" before he kisses her.
Piers is amazed at Charlotte solving the secret language of his left eyebrow, which he later refers to as his eyebrow oracle. He then has his valet, also an undercover spy, try to "read" his eyebrow.
Charlotte's mother uses vegetables to explain what would happen on her wedding night. Charlotte pretends to not understand and asks her mother to demonstrate. This is extremely funny the first time, but later, an innocent discussion about eggplants comes up and every comment sounds hysterically lewd.
When Charlotte's friend's sister suggests she's something that rhymes with her name, the friend's parents begin guessing every possible, ridiculous, rhyming word BUT the word she meant.
8 year old Edmund is a hoot. He overhears a couple having sex and thinks someone is being killed. He not only continues to repeat all the inappropriate sounds he heard, but pursues Piers throughout the book chanting "Murder, murder."
These are but a few small things. You'll have to read it to find out the rest.
Hopefully we don't have to wait long for the next one!

This book was written in such uninspiring prose that I actually checked to see if,perhaps, it was one of her unpublished early writings.Nope. Then I figured it was the fact that the book was printed in somewhat larger type and spaced so it appeared to be a strung out novella. Again,I believe I was wrong. The characters are simply silly or over the top (that boy? Really???). The heroine acts and thinks like she's prepubescent and the hero acts and thinks unsuitable to his position (an esteemed spy? I don't think so).
Tessa Dare's writing is usually mesmerizing, intelligent and just plain wonderful to read; I haven't missed one of her books yet. Unfortunately this one was so juvenile I simply couldn't finish it and picked up my copy of another one of hers to reread so I could love her once more.
What happened here???

Dissenting opinion , it seems, but I found this book silly. I gave up on it around 50%, decided to try again and it didn't improve. I gave up for good at 77%. H&H are forced to get engaged because the are caught together in a room. After that they are repeatedly alone (all night) and nobody notices. The heroine pursues a mystery and fails.. It seems like this is supposed to be comedic, but it's not funny. The heroine decides she wants to be a spy, on a whim , with no training or experience. I've generally liked Tessa Dare's books, but this one is silly.

Like many of the other reviewers, I've read all of Tessa's books and had looked forward to this one. It was a real let-down. It started off well enough. But it was quite obvious to me who the other couple was. POSSIBLE SPOILER - Once the other couple was known, it made no sense why Charlotte and Piers were forced to become engaged. (And, like one of the other reviewers, I hated the name Piers. If this was supposed to be a nod to Pierce Brosnan as 007, well... ick. Don't like James Bond. REALLY don't like Brosnan.) The sex education lesson I assume was meant to be humorous, but just came out as... crass and puerile. I allow for some suspension of strict adherence to the norms of the time period, but there were many instances of Charlotte behaving *wholly inappropriately* for the Regency era. Way too progressive for 1819. Sadly, the last few books have really been going downhill in quality.

I've been waiting for Charlotte to complete the Highwood women and it didn't disappoint. I would have liked to have known why the older sister hated Charlotte so much that was left hanging. NOT a fan of the lesbian story line in some of Tessa Dare books. Not necessary to story lines.

This book leads you to believe that it is going to be a good romance, mystery. In reality it is little more than a run of the mill, force betrothal. An excuse for gratuitous sex. It's a shame, and waste of a handsome Marquess. There is nothing out of the ordinary about this book. It is basically, something that has been done one time too many.

I've heard so much about Tessa Dare's books, so I have to say my expectations were a bit high. And yeah...the hype is true.
Charlotte and Piers are absolutely delightful together. Their chemistry and banter is off the charts. I could easily read another 300 pages about them and their adventures.
This was quite fluffy with only a bit of angst and an epilogue that's as close to perfection as I think you could get. I'll definitely be looking into other Tessa books.
**Huge thanks to Avon Books and Edelweiss for providing the arc in exchange for an honest review**

After the plodding fiasco that was Say Yes to the Marquess: Castles Ever After, I should have known to skip the story of the jilted Marquess. But, the audiobook was available at the library, so I decided to give it a listen.
The heroine in this story was hopelessly naive, which would have been endearing if she weren't also incredibly condescending. Her determination to marry for love or not at all trumped all other considerations, including the social consequences of declining a marriage offer after her reputation was compromised. Instead of thanking the hero, she spent the rest of the house party looking for the trysting couple and a way into the hero's heart, or bed, whichever was available at any given moment. As the story progressed, the hero marveled at the heroine's insight and ingenuity, but I saw no evidence of either in her bumbling attempts to solve a mystery, which, as it turned out, wasn't worth solving.
It seemed odd that the hero, a career spy, diplomat, and a peer of the realm, indulged the heroines whims, but then he was infatuated, which was meant explain his irrational behavior. I thought he'd gone a bit far with arson, especially since he'd managed to come up with a more appropriate gesture than setting the clothes in her room on fire, eventually. But then, he wouldn't have had to reveal a tragedy from his childhood, and all his dark brooding would have been for nothing.
I don't expect historical accuracy from Dare's novels - I consider her works Regency inspired fairy tales rather than historical romance novels - but the flagrant disregard for social conventions in this story was more than I could take. Maybe if the plot had more substance or the romantic relationship was build on a more solid foundation than lust, I would have enjoyed this story. As it was, I was just happy to finish it.

Talk about a story that twists like a pretzel. Do You Want to Start a Scandal has to be one of the most surprising of stories because it’s not all like I was led to believe. This novel is full of red herrings and goose chases and I was perplexed for most of it because it’s a mystery. However, the means of sleuthing and the reasons for it are unlike any I have ever read and I found it kind of funny.
I don’t think it’s set up as a true mystery; the book is a romance through and through, and a good one. However, the intrepid heroine, Charlotte, is determined to solve the mystery of the garter because in doing so, she’ll be able to clear her reputation. However, as the story goes on, I’m not convinced that she’s convinced that it’s really her goal at all.
I liked Charlotte and her way with words. One of my favorite lines comes her speaking with the hero. She’s not supposed to like him, but what is a reader to think when she accuses the hero of having a “masculine lip elixir”? I totally snorted when I read that.
Another belly laugh came from the part when Charlotte’s mother tried to explain marital bedroom activities using vegetables and fruits. I had a fit of the giggles when the heroine turned the tables on her mom with a bit of creative questioning. I also liked that the heroine was not afraid to show the hero what it’s like to simply have fun, like when she started playing with his hair – the descriptions inspired more giggles. It’s Charlotte’s zest for life, optimism and sense of adventure that is her charm. She’s straightforward, vocal and amazingly sharp-witted. She’s an excellent foil for a serious minded, proper stick in the mud peer who just happens to live a daring and dangerous double life.
Charlotte is oil, Piers is vinegar, and when they mix, they create a spicy blend that flavors the salad of life so well that they simply can’t go back to being who they were before they met. Granted, Piers makes some spectacular blunders and makes me question his judgment, and Charlotte inadvertently gives the wrong impression to another lady of the ton, much to her consternation, and that makes her fallible too. They are not perfect characters but they are perfect together.
I think the only thing that was slightly over the top was Piers’ ability to find a missing bit of cloth that Charlotte desperately wanted found. The where and how of it seemed like an impossibility. Also, I really wished someone would have taken Edmund in hand. The kid was a menace. That child should have been in bed, sleeping.
When the mystery is finally solved, it’s done in a spectacular style with an eye-popping revelation. Somehow, I don’t think anyone in the vicinity of the great revelation will ever forget that night. Certainly I won’t. That scenario was a first for me and I credit Ms. Dare on providing me with a most unique and singular reading experience.
There is no doubt that Do You Want to Start a Scandal is an entertaining, engaging and romantic read. It can boast two strong characters, an interesting mystery twist and a seduction of the senses. There’s humor and clever use of quips and dialogue not to mention delightful descriptions to bring the romance alive for readers. It’s truly a story well worth reading.

Oh Tessa Dare, how I love thee. Seriously, her books are like candy. This one made me laugh. It gave me two solid characters that I cared about. And it gave me a romance I could root for. Really, what more could you ask for?
This is a Spindle Cove novel, but the story takes us to a new location, as our heroine Charlotte and her mother attend a house party. It’s a perfect opportunity for a set-up and Charlotte knows exactly the marquess her mom would like to get her hooks in. So she decides to be proactive and beat her to it. Charlotte approaches Piers, Lord Granville, in the library to warn him.
The plan backfires when they get trapped in the room where a couple is having a tryst. A few moans and groans later, Charlotte ends up exactly where she didn’t want to be: forced into a betrothal with a man she doesn’t love.
Charlotte has no idea that Piers is more than the handsome, titled gentleman he seems to be. He’s actually a spy, working undercover, investigating their host. He doesn’t want to arouse suspicion about what he was doing in the library that night. It was actually easier to let people think he was meeting Charlotte for an assignation. Plus, the smart and forthright young woman appealed to him, so a proposal seemed the best course of action. If only she weren’t so determined to find a love match…
I adored this book. Piers may be the worldly one, but Charlotte has so much more emotional maturity. She knows what she wants for her future. She doesn’t want to settle; not for a loveless marriage, even if it is with a man above her station. And as she grows to care for Piers, she wants more for him as well. Our hero was damaged by his childhood and his walls only built higher as he did some difficult things in the name of duty. But as he grows closer to Charlotte, it all slowly begins to fall away. His walls start coming down, no matter how hard he tries to hold onto them. And that’s where Dare spins gold.
There are some really solid sexy times here. There’s also a fair amount of mystery as Charlotte tries to track down the elusive couple from the library, and even more as she falls victim to more than one frightening ordeal. But it’s the laughter –and the swoon-worthy romance that ultimately did me in.
You don’t have to read the first four books in the series to enjoy this one, but you really can’t go wrong with Spindle Cove –or Tessa Dare. She’s really one of the best in historical romance.

I simply adore Tessa Dare’s heroines... she writes a period romance like no other which is largely due to her witty, fast thinking, amusing and Independant heroines regardless of the era they’ve been born into. Charlotte Highwood is one of the best of them. Such feistiness, wit and energy makes her utterly delightful and a wonderful match for our mysterious Marquee - Piers Brandon.
‘Do you want to start a scandal’ was a funny, sexy, sweet romance with a serious, confident, self assured hero that could surely kick butt. Behind that hard exterior hides a passionate heart just waiting for the right lady. Piers is that hero and Charlotte with her fabulous sense of humour, smart words, self aware youthfulness is a perfect foil for Piers. I simply loved them together and their interactions and conversations were delightful to read... ‘This was why—no matter what her mother schemed and planned—Charlotte had promised herself she would only follow her heart. “I can’t agree to a convenient arrangement, my lord. Your devotion to duty may be admirable, but ‘lie back and think of England’ simply isn’t for me.”’
The story starts with Piers Brandon finding himself at a house party closeted in the library alone with Charlotte Highwood a young woman who is desperately trying to save him and herself from her out of control matchmaking mother. Charlotte has plans to tour the continent with her best friend Delia and has no desire for marriage just yet & of course when she does marry it will only be for love.
Unfortunately for Charlotte an amorous couple enters the library and proceed to put the desk to good use. Fortunately for Charlotte, Piers is a quick thinker with sure fast reflexes and she finds herself in his arms hiding behind a curtain while the unknown couple goes at it like bunnies. Eventually the deed is done and the mystery couple departs, Charlotte breathes a sigh of relief until disaster strikes.
They are discovered and everyone assumes, due to some hilarious testimony by Delia's little brother Edmund, that they were the lusty couple in the library. Charlotte finds herself right in the middle of what she was trying so hard to avoid: a scandal and a hasty proposal from the oh so honorable Marquess...
‘some other couple had a scandalous tryst on the desk. We shouldn’t be punished for it.” His gaze caught hers. “If we don’t marry, only one of us will be punished. And it won’t be me.” “I know.” The world congratulated men on their sexual exploits, but it was cruel indeed to women who dared behave the same. He could walk away from this situation unscathed. She would be ruined. Friendless. Loveless. Grand Tour–less. Miserable.’
Determined to avoid a disastrous marriage Charlotte is on a mission to find out the identity of the mystery lovers so she can get on with her plans. Except the broody, handsome Piers has his own agenda and Charlotte finds herself charmed, intrigued and seriously turned on by the man beneath the proper aristocratic facade.
Dare's sense of humour comes through strongly and the fast-paced mystery kept me swiping pages long after I should have put my kindle down for the night. Charlotte shines as a young woman who is confident enough in herself to try and lead the life she wants, who will flout convention and marry for love and not for scandal...
‘she couldn’t imagine agreeing to marry without love. You can’t eat love, she heard Mama’s voice insisting. But then, she couldn’t hold a conversation with a heap of coins. She couldn’t find tenderness or passion in a vast, empty house. Or even five houses.’
Utterly delightful - comforting, funny, a wonderful mad romp... A definite must-read for not only Tessa Dare fans but anyone looking for a fun, fast-paced book.

Do You Want To Start A Scandal is book 5 in the Spindle Cove series, but it is easily a stand alone book. The book doesn't actually take place in Spindle Cove, but it does feature one family from there.
If you have read the other Spindle Cove books, you know what a scheming, conniving, pushy mother this woman is. Two of her daughters have already defied her and married as they chose - now she just has the youngest one to push into marriage with any male she can as long as he is high ranking.
Charlotte Highwood knows her mother will be plotting to pair her off with the highest ranking gentleman at the house party they are attending. That just happens to be Piers Brandon, Lord Granville who is a Marques. Charlotte doesn't want to be part of the plot, so she follows him into the hosts library in order to warn him of what her mother will be about. Just then, they hear someone approaching and hide in an alcove - when - what should happen -- why a romantically inclined couple enter the library and proceed to have a very intimate tryst. Oh the mortification! But Charlotte thinks it is funny and starts giggling and Piers has to bury her head in his chest to keep her from being heard. You know they are going to get caught - you just have to wait to see how. So starts this lighthearted, romantic book.
Charlotte doesn't want to marry -- she wants to go on a grand tour with her best friend. That is the reason she's at the house party -- to show her best friends parents that they are mature enough to make the tour without their parents, but with a chaperone. So, you can imagine getting caught in a 'compromising' position with the Marquess isn't a very good way to get started.
Piers immediately offers for Charlotte, but she says no -- they didn't do anything. Of course, nobody buys that. But Charlotte only agrees to a private engagement to satisfy her mother and the host and then sets her mind to finding who the REAL couple were and to get them to come forward.
You'll be delighted with who the intimate couple is -- and why.
Piers is a real cold fish and is incapable of any warm, soft feelings - can Charlotte change that and thaw his cold heart. You'll just have to read the book to see!!!!
I loved it!

I loved it!

Do You Want to Start a Scandal by Tessa Dare
Book Five of the Spindle Cove series/Book Four of the Castles Ever After series
Publisher: Avon
Publication Date: September 27, 2016
Rating: 4 stars

***Warning: this is an adult book, and for the eyes of mature readers***
Summary (from Goodreads):
On the night of the Parkhurst ball, someone had a scandalous tryst in the library.
•Was it Lord Canby, with the maid, on the divan?
•Or Miss Fairchild, with a rake, against the wall?
•Perhaps the butler did it.
All Charlotte Highwood knows is this: it wasn’t her. But rumors to the contrary are buzzing. Unless she can discover the lovers’ true identity, she’ll be forced to marry Piers Brandon, Lord Granville—the coldest, most arrogantly handsome gentleman she’s ever had the misfortune to embrace. When it comes to emotion, the man hasn’t got a clue.
But as they set about finding the mystery lovers, Piers reveals a few secrets of his own. The oh-so-proper marquess can pick locks, land punches, tease with sly wit … and melt a woman’s knees with a single kiss. The only thing he guards more fiercely than Charlotte’s safety is the truth about his dark past.
Their passion is intense. The danger is real. Soon Charlotte’s feeling torn. Will she risk all to prove her innocence? Or surrender it to a man who’s sworn to never love?
What I Liked:
This book was LOVELY. I can't think of a better word to describe it. This is Tessa Dare at her best - with a funny, charming, sexy, heartwarming story. Charlotte is a kind yet busybody-type, and Piers is a seemingly cold yet haunted and brooding type, and the pair make for a bickering, opposing, passionate couple. I loved this story!
At the Parkhurst ball, Charlotte Highwood goes to find Lord Granville. Her mother is determined to see Charlotte marry this marquess, but Charlotte wants to let him know that she has no intentions of doing so. Unfortunately, while Piers and Charlotte are talking, another couple comes in. Piers and Charlotte hide, but the couple have sex, making a lot of noise. They leave, and while Charlotte and Piers look to leave too, they are "discovered". Piers does the honorable thing in offering for Charlotte. But Charlotte thinks that finding out who the mysterious lovers were will set everything to rights, making it possible for her and Piers not to marry. But she slowly discovers that this seemingly cold, proper lord is quite charming, sexy, and has excellent instincts and skills. Charlotte wants to marry for love, and she's falling in love with Piers. But does Piers love her back?
Tessa Dare sure knows how to create, craft, and develop characters. This sounds so basic, but Dare really has a talent for this. I've read many of her books, and I've found that all of her characters are so lifelike, and very likable. Often times I have issues with heroines in historical romance novels, but I didn't have any problems with Charlotte.
Charlotte is adorable and kind, a bit of a busybody but in a well-meaning way. She's perceptive in her own way, and she definitely means well in everything she does. The problem is, much of what she does (and means well, in doing), ends badly. Getting caught with Piers, unchaperoned? The opposite of what she'd intended. Marrying him? Not part of the plan. She wants to love the man she marries, and vice versa. Charlotte doesn't stand up to her overbearing mother, but she is rebellious at times. I like that Charlotte is a mix of sweet and feisty. I like that she fits the bill of a twenty-one-year-old of this time period, and yet she is somewhat independent and strong-minded too.
Piers. Oh Piers. This review could be entirely about Piers and I bet I'd convince all of you reading this review to read the book, just because of Piers alone. We meet Piers in Say Yes to the Marquess, in which Clio, his intended, marries his brother Rafe. You'd think Piers would hold this against Rafe and have a grudge about Rafe taking his bride, but Piers is very supportive of the pair. Piers and Clio's would-be marriage was arranged for quite some time, and neither had any inclination toward each other.
Piers seems proper and almost cold, perfect polite with sparsely changing facial expressions and excellent perception. He's clever and extremely intelligent, but he has difficult with emotions. Piers had an awful childhood, one that Rafe does not remember or know (Rafe is several years younger). my heart broke for Piers over and over. The poor man knows to do his duty as a marquess, and wants others to be well and taken care of, but he has no notion of love and doesn't want to feel romantic love for anyone, nor does he want anyone to feel that love for him.
Piers, guys. The man is SO swoony. He may seem proper, but he is a live flame underneath his magnificent cravats and waistcoats. He wants Charlotte badly from the start, but also wants to do right by her. He protects her, as well as her reputation and her family, without fail. He takes care of Charlotte, and even though they are secretly engaged, he lets her be. Piers is a barely restrained alpha male, controlled and leashed, but he is also very charming and kind and sweet. He reminds me of Lord Darcy in Lady Bridget's Diary, except perhaps swoonier? Piers is, well, *sigh*.
The romance is so sweet, and steamy, and mostly sweet. I loved seeing the pair interact. Most of the time they are gently bickering, in which Charlotte is bothering Piers, and Piers is faintly amused. Piers then teases Charlotte, Charlotte is shocked, etc. There are lots of passionate kisses, and then sweet words, and basically I was sighing and hugging this book for the entire duration of the story.
The little mystery isn't as big of a part of the series as I expected, which I was totally fine with. Don't get me wrong, it's an important part, but I like that Piers and Charlotte's relationship was a little more important. Charlotte and Piers (mostly Charlotte) do the investigating and find out who the mysterious lovers are... it's quite the twist!
Did I mention the humor of this book yet? All of Tessa Dare's books are quite funny, and this novel is no exception. I love the humor! Some of scenes were downright hilarious.
Something cool about this book - it's part of TWO series! The Spindle Cove series (book five) and the Castles Ever After series (book four). I've read books from both series (all four of the Castles Ever After books, and three of the Spindle Cove books), and I've really enjoyed all of the books I've read. Charlotte is specifically part of the Spindle Cove series, and Piers is specifically part of the Castles Ever After series, and here we are, joining the two. I love how Dare did this! It was tricky when labeling the series at the top of my review, but you'll notice that I put both in there.
Anyway! I'm quite pleased with this book. I haven't read a Tessa Dare book that I didn't love, and that is saying something. I love historical romance novels, and Tessa Dare is an auto-buy/auto-read author for me, every time. She's definitely a favorite historical romance author of mine!
What I Did Not Like:
I know I'm not giving this book five stars, but it's not because there was anything specific that was wrong with the book. I wish, in the end, that Charlotte was the one to give chase, but at the same time, they both gave chase, in the end. Both erred and both corrected (though it was more effort on Piers' part). But that wouldn't be cause for me to drop the rating. I loved this book, just not as much as I loved other Dare books.
Would I Recommend It:
I highly recommend this novel! If you love the Spindle Cove series, or the Castles Ever After series, or historical romance in general, this is definitely one NOT to miss. I rarely say that about historical romance novels, so get on that! Tessa Dare's books are unmatched in their humor, wit, and sexy times. (Seriously, her books are on the more steamy side of historical romance, usually!)
Rating:
4.5 stars. I hesitate to round down, but at the moment, I'm not feeling a 5-star rating! I'm stingy with those, but who knows, I may change my mind (this is rare). I absolutely adored this book. While I'm sad to see both series end, I'm excited for the new series that Dare is writing!

So – it took me a bit to get TO this book (apologies) but I just couldn’t put it down. I want to BE Charlotte Highwood when I grow up. Completely her own person, smart, mouthy, innocent and completely hilarious simply because she is so blunt and spot on with her observations. But, when she’s feeling cornered by rumors that will require her to marry a man she doesn’t know (and doesn’t think a good match) her determination to lead her own life by her own terms is marvelous.
Piers Brandon, Lord Granville, starts out as a very typical man of his station, reserved, a bit proper and stuffy, what isn’t known is that he is a spy for the crown. And, he can’t believe that this chit of a girl is ‘warning him’ of her mother’s intentions for them to marry. But, there’s something about Charlotte: her beauty, her obvious wit and the fact that she isn’t cowed by his title or presence is completely foreign territory, and one his career as spy and diplomat have not prepared him for.
Oh the plot is thick and full of twists in this one: as Piers, egged on by Charlotte’s determination, decides to find out just who missed being caught en flagrante in the library during the ball by the hosts’ young son. The combination of Charlotte’s innocence combined with her honest desire to see the real Piers gives him the strength and courage to face his own demons and heal.
Pretty heady stuff for a story that kept me smiling, had me loving both characters together and apart, and finishing this book in a single sitting. Now to get to the earlier titles in this series.
I received an eArc copy of the title from the publisher via Edelweiss for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.

I thought I have reached the end of the Spindle Cove series just to discover I have missed one novella.
So I have some more time before saying goodbye to the characters who have become friends.
But here it was the final chapter for the Highwood siblings, Charlotte has found her match.
The blurb as a Clue game caught me unaware, and I adored following Charlotte trying to decipher the different evidences left behind the crime scene.
Charlotte for long was just the youngest Highwood miss with too many fantasies in her head. Now, she is all grownup and ready to spread her wings and fly. Just her interfering mother with her obsession for titled prospective husbands sets between now and her dreams. And by trying to prevent her mother’s schemes, she found herself mistakenly trapped with the man she thought to dodge.
Piers Brandon harbors more secrets than a bureau with hidden drawers, he is on a mission and Miss Highwood constant interruptions and meddling distract him from his normal path.
Charlotte is a cheerful heroine, seeing the good long before the bad, she suffered from a bad reputation because of her mother’s way of throwing her on the road of well-breed gentlemen. But she stayed true to herself, always laughing and smiling, full of hopes for her future.
Piers closed his hearts years ago, and since he never let anyone in. But Charlotte has a way to go under his skin he can’t comprehend, she stole all his thoughts, her innocence and boldness left him questioning himself.
“She unsettled him; he anchored her. Together, they could be more than they were apart.”
“She must always remain the optimist to his cynic, the laughter to his silence, the chaos to his order, the warmth to his cool. Their hearts would meet in the middle somehow.”
The story gave also a new insight of Mrs Highwood, she was a laughingstock the whole series, but here we learn more about the woman behind all those crazy attempts to find wealthy men for her daughters.
And the peach/aubergine scene was just hilarious.
“Her mother had married at seventeen and been widowed at four-and-twenty, having never experienced anything of the world. All the security and warmth of their home died with Father, and Mama had grown anxious and scattered as a result. Now she was an object of ridicule.”
One more lovely story in this entertaining series, it has all the components to mix for a perfect recipe, humour, mystery, few angst, sexy times.

Charlotte Highwood is blessed with a mother who loves her very much, but that same mother is also determined to see her married well, throwing her into one awkward situation after another. Charlotte is determined that her mother’s newest prospect will not end up being forced to marry her because her mother has maneuvered a “situation”. When Charlotte sneaks away to have a word with Piers Brandon, Lord Granville, and warn him, I and Piers are immediately charmed by her efforts. Charlotte, in her haste to make him aware that she is not trying to trap him, tells him she’d never find him attractive and he’s not her type. He’s intrigued and I’m laughing at the clever dialog and scene that Tessa Dare has written. The scene is not unusual, but she imbues Charlotte with a naive exuberance that you can’t help but find charming, and Piers definitely does.
As I was reading this novel, I realized that I had actually read Say Yes to the Marquess, the sequel to this one where Rafe, Piers’ brother, falls in love with Piers’ fiancee of many years. Say Yes.. was my first Tessa Dare novel in quite awhile and I think it’s fate that another blogger recommended I read Do You Want to Start a Scandal, the next in the series. That moment of recognition, when Piers’ identity is revealed along with the fact that his brother stole his last fiancee, made Piers immediately interesting. Tying those two histories together made his rather cool demeanor have meaning. That demeanor was a mask for his activities, and the fact that he dropped that mask for Charlotte made me like him for her.
This was a fun novel, and the fact that I fell into the plot so easily showed Tessa Dare’s talent for weaving a charming romantic tale.

How much do I love this book? Let me count the ways. The many, many, many, many, many ways! First, there's the beginning - one of the funniest I can ever remember reading. Charlotte Highwood, youngest and only unmarried daughter of a mama determined to see her daughters all settled in the best possible circumstances, hasn't the slightest interest in marriage. Charlotte has other plans. Plans with her best friend that don't include a man. Plans that have brought them all to her friend's family estate for a house party where Charlotte's mother has her sights set on Piers Brandon, the Marquess of Granville as a husband for her daughter and Charlotte is determined to block her mother at every turn.
Block number one occurs soon after their arrival when Charlotte runs Piers - a man she's never met - to ground in the library to inform him that she's not the least bit interested in marrying him. You can imagine his reaction. Only you might be surprised. Unfortunately, before she can leave, they're interrupted by an amorous couple seeking to use the library for a sexual tryst. Fortunately, Charlotte and Piers manage to hide from view until the unknown couple leaves the room. Unfortunately, someone overhears the tryst, misunderstands the noises, and, thinking Charlotte and Piers are the guilty couple, repeats the sounds heard (in front of everyone) in one of the funniest scenes I've read in a long time. No spoilers but a fair warning to all readers: don't have anything in your mouth when you reach page 38. In fact, you probably don't want to drink anything during the entire first chapter. It's laugh-out-loud funny - as is much of the book. But don't be misled into thinking this is all humor and no substance. Dare expertly balances humor with emotion to give the reader an all-encompassing journey that will elicit tears, laughter, heartwarming joy, and, if you're like me, probably a hot flash or two.
The end result of the hilarious first chapter is a "compromised" and betrothed couple, a hero who is more than he seems, a heroine who, unlike her mother, has zero interest in landing a marquess, and a mystery Charlotte is determined to solve. Add in a reluctant attraction that grows with each encounter throughout the book, our adorably charming heroine, a sigh-worthy hero with a wonderfully dry wit who isn't afraid of fighting for the woman he wants, a hilarious "witness" keeping an eye on our couple's activities, a birds and bees lecture that has forever changed the way I view certain fruits, and a deeply sensual, heart-tugging journey to love and you have not only one of Tessa Dare's best books but one of the most enjoyable stories I've read in a very long time. The first time through, I grinned from cover to cover while devouring the book in one sitting. The next two times, I went slower, savoring each word while fully absorbing - and appreciating -Dare's humor, passion, heart-felt romance, and superb storytelling. I adored this couple and their story. Even though I've read the book three times, every time I think of certain scenes or dialog (and I think of them often) all I want to do is open the front cover and start all over again. That, my friends, is the sign of an exceptional book.
This book ties together two of Dare's series: Spindle Cove and Castles Ever After. If you've read those series, you'll have fun catching up with favorite characters from previous books. However, this book stands quite well on its own without the backstory provided in the earlier books. If you haven't read Tessa Dare yet, Do You Want to Start a Scandal would be an excellent place to begin.

However, this book stands quite well on its own without the backstory provided in the earlier books. If you haven't read Tessa Dare yet, Do You Want to Start a Scandal would be an excellent place to begin.

What is an unmarried miss to do when she is caught in the middle of what promises to be an epic scandal with an equally unmarried marquess? Well Charlotte Highwood stubbornly sets out to find out the identity of the mystery lovers at the Parkhurst Ball. If she doesn't, she's going to have to marry Piers Brandon, the Marquess of Granville aka the coldest, most unfeeling man she's ever met. Only, when Piers and Charlotte are alone, he's not as cold and unfeeling as everyone believes. Working together brings out the best and worst in them and may not lead to solving the building mystery of just who was in the library with Piers and Charlotte that night?
With Do You Want to Start a Scandal I’ve learned that you can feel homesick for a fictional place/time you’ve never been to and characters you’ve only met in passing. I didn’t realize how much I had missed the characters of Spindle Cove until I opened this book and got reacquainted with Charlotte Highwood. I literally sighed and said “Hello Charlotte, nice to see you again.” Charlotte has been around from the very first Spindle Cove book, along with her matchmaking, over the top mama and her two sisters, Minerva (A Week to Be Wicked) and Diana (Beauty and the Blacksmith).
Often the most ignored character in the past, Charlotte is now grown and her mama is still with her matchmaking schemes. I loved Charlotte for so many reasons but the main one was that she was insistent that Piers see her as more than just a wife, she demanded to be his partner and that he treat her as an equal. But more than demands she proved she could be a true partner to him. She had a natural talent for solving difficult mysteries which went well with Piers’ own occupation. Charlotte was equal parts charming, intelligent, determined, and loving in a way that didn’t overwhelm or annoy. I just felt she was so genuine and she didn’t realize that she wasn’t as unaccomplished as she had thought. Her mind worked differently than say, her sisters’ but she was no less amazing than they were. Which brings me to the nice little reunion with Diana and Minerva, along with their husbands. Oh how I loved those few bits. It may have served to give closure to the Highwood girls’ stories but it also made me nostalgic for the entire Spindle Cove series. I have so many favorite Charlotte moments that they belong on their own list. She was such a fun character!
Piers was still a relatively new character to me. He was the fiancé of the heroine in Say Yes to the Marquess from the Castles Ever After series. Not much was really told about the man who spent eight years away from his fiancé only to lose her to his brother. That’s okay though because Piers was much more suited to Charlotte who wouldn’t let him get so serious and dour that he forgot to smile and have fun once in awhile. I actually liked his serious personality because it made it all the more special when Charlotte got him to relax and be more himself. To everyone Piers seemed like an indomitable creature with no feelings what so ever yet I thought he was a man who felt too deeply and tried to close himself off. He had a natural instinct to protect the helpless and a charisma that I don’t think he was even aware of. All in all a very dashing figure. I honestly like him better than his brother Rafe.
Piers and Charlotte kind of reminded me of Colin and Minerva (A Week to be Wicked) just because they were so different from each other but at the same time, there was a hidden trait or hobby that connected them and allowed them to be in each other’s company which in turn gave the budding romance a chance to grow. There was a clear physical attraction between them but with the mystery of the secret lovers needing to be solved, Piers and Charlotte got to know each other pretty well. I liked the mix of heated moments and shy revelations between the two. The best thing to me was that I never felt like Piers was running roughshod over Charlotte. Oh he tried to in order to “protect” her but she wasn’t having any of his shenanigans and told him so to his face! That was one of my favorite scenes involving these two.
He gestured at the burned floor. “Those undergarments had it coming to them. They attacked me first.”
“Good Lord.” She stood back a pace. “I can’t decide if you’ve gone completely blockheaded, or if you are trying to make yourself detestable.”
“You tell me.” He gestured at the left side of his face. “I thought the eyebrow oracle revealed all.”
“Yes, well. It’s difficult to look at your eyebrow when your head is so far up your arse.”
As the story takes place at the home of Charlotte’s best friend Delia, there aren’t that many supporting characters in Do You Want to Start a Scandal. I liked Delia and hope she’ll get a story soon. I really couldn’t stand Edmund, Delia’s brother. He was quite the annoying little boy and I could have definitely done without him. He drove me nuts with his over the top behavior. Thankfully his scenes were few. Delia’s sister Frances had a bee in her bonnet and never quite got it out. She was a hateful thing in my opinion. So really it boiled down to just Delia.
I’ve always enjoyed Tessa Dare’s books but this one in particular had such an easy pace and smooth scene transitions that it was just effortless to read. I genuinely missed the characters of Spindle Cove and their oddities. Add in a mystery, the possibility of ruin, and viola! Insta-fun! I sure was sad to reach the end of this book.
Final Verdict: Do You Want to Start a Scandal brings back the magic of Spindle Cove while still keeping things fresh and new with that much missed Tessa Dare flair.

After her mother literally pushed her in front of an eligible man in Rotten Row last season, Charlotte Highwood was named The Desperate Debutante. So, when she encounters Piers Brandon, the Marquess of Granville at a house party, she decides to be honest and informs him that although her mother may try to match them up, he doesn’t have to comply and, better yet, they can simply ignore one another.
Charlotte has been dreaming of accompanying her friend, Delia Pankhurst, on a Grand Tour and has no real desire to marry right now.
Piers’s valet, Ridley, is secretly his colleague in service to the Crown. The men are at Sir Vernon Pankhurst’s house party to investigate some corruption.
Charlotte and Piers are thrown together quite often and in such funny ways. Both of them simply cannot stop their attraction to one another.
This book had me laughing at the humor and creative novelties with which the author literally peppered this book with. Be prepared to fall in love with Piers and Charlotte as you sit back and laugh out loud. Chuckling and sighing at the same time makes for the best book. This is a story that will always be a classic. Don’t miss it.

Do You Want to Start a Scandal by Tessa Dare was another one of those books I picked up during a reading slump on a whim thanks to oh so many glowing reviews from some of the amazing bloggers that I trusted. I never read a Tessa Dare book prior to this and am now wondering how I got away with it? Especially since I adore my share of historical romances.
We meet Charlotte Highwood, a sort of a pariah in the society thanks to her mother who is so very keen on getting Charlotte married into title that she is willing to throw in front of a coach – literally.
Charlotte swoops into the library during the Parkhurst ball in order to warn Piers Brandon, Lord Granville that she is there to save him – from herself – when the two find themselves behind one of the curtains in a middle of a scandalous lovers tryst. When Parkhurts youngest discovers the two in the same room after hearing the sounds, he is convinced that Piers is trying to murder Charlotte and she finds herself trapped into marriage to the very man she was there to save from the same predicament.
Now Charlotte is trying to discover who the lovers so she could clear her name, but Lord Granville has his own plans up his sleeve.
I absolutely adored this. I thought the book was very well done and it was so easy for me to lose myself in Dare’s writing. It’s just so breathtakingly wonderful, romantic, and just in general great storytelling.
Charlotte and Piers had both been just outstanding characters I found that I couldn’t get enough of. I loved their interactions, as they were both funny and endearing. Charlotte has been just someone I found myself relating to. She is not perfect by any means what so ever. She doesn’t see herself fit in taking care of a manor, when her own life is so chaotic. She leaves her clothes thrown all over the floor and has a small bookmark that is made from a blanket when she was a child. Her character just felt so innocent and heartwarming, I found myself a bit annoyed with her mother and everything she felt she needed to put the girl through for the sake of marriage.
Piers is just completely opposite of hurricane Charlotte. He is very clean, he likes things to be out of place and more than once has claimed that her dresses and linens have tried to kill him. He also has a top secret job, that Charlotte apparently did not have a hard time guessing.
Overall, the romance was completely swoon worthy as expected. Charlotte doesn’t want to marry Piers at first because she wants to marry for love, and thinks Piers deserves the same. Charlotte also believes that she is too young for Piers, and in a way she is – not age wise perhaps – but mentally.
She sends Piers into a complete whirl-spin and makes his life a bit more chaotic, which unsettles the man completely but makes it for an enjoyable read. I truly did adore these two and find myself missing them already.
Did I mention that the book was just so funny? Dare does a great job mixing humor into the story that had me snorting with laughter several times throughout. The interactions, the writing, and the actions were just filled with snark and all around light and amusing.
Big brownie points for Tessa Dare, her writing, her storytelling, and adoring characters. I cannot wait to explore and discover what else she has hiding for me.

Charlotte Highwood is a wonderful heroine. She is strong and intelligent and funny. She cares for other people to the point that she feels the need to “save them”. This is true whether they actually need saving or not.
Piers Brandon, Lord Granville is a wonderful hero. He has worked for the government as a diplomat who does what ever is necessary. His work has convinced him that he is a cold and hardened person and beyond redemption. That is not necessarily true.
When these two meet, the fun begins.
Charlotte is trying to prevent Piers from being pursued by her mother. Her mother is trying to find a wealthy husband for Charlotte and she is not beyond doing whatever is needed. The newspapers have an unkind name for Charlotte. The entire world believes that she is willing to do anything to catch a husband. When in reality, what she truly wants is to take a trip across Europe with her best friend, Delia.
When Piers and Charlotte are believed to have had a sexual encounter, he agrees to marry her. Charlotte does not plan to marry him, so she makes a plan.
Charlotte is determined to find out who the actual couple were, and allow Piers to be free of any commitment.
As Charlotte is seeking the couple's identity, she is also becoming more familiar with Piers and what kind of man he is. There is a strong physical attraction between the two, but there is also a wonderful rapport. Although there is no evidence the two would make a couple, the evidence may be wrong.
The character development is terrific. Charlotte and Piers are a wonderful pair. The dialog between the two is priceless. He is amazed at her antics and she has no idea why he continues to try to remain distant from the action. She is a leap before you look woman and he is a place for everything and everything in its place man. Both of them have quick minds and solving puzzles comes naturally to both of them.
The secondary characters are just what is needed for the story. All of them add to the texture and depth of the action. Edmund, the little boy who believes he heard a murder, is a perfect addition.
The plot is well developed and there are no dangling loose threads at the end. At times it appears there is true evil afoot, but in reality...well read the book and you will see.
I enjoyed this book very much. Ms Dare is a new to me author and I regret that I have come so late to the party. I like stories which make me laugh. This story made me laugh. I also like stories which introduce me to characters who would make interesting friends. There is no one in the story who would be boring.

The story can be described as a Spindle Cove/Castles Ever After crossover since the hero, Piers, is the Marquess in book two of the Castles Ever After series, Say Yes to the Marquess. Although it's part of a series it can be easily read as a stand alone.
Charlotte is the perfect heroine, she took over the story with her wit, charm and joy. As adorable as can be she was also a bit too candid, and brave in her naive way. Those characteristics made her interesting and fresh, perfect for a historical romance.
My problem with this book was that I didn’t fall involve with Piers. There was something missing about him, I can't quite describe what it was, but I felt I didn't know enough about his character.
I must point out that some situations were a bit over the top and not very believable, but I put them aside because this book was laugh out loud funny (mainly because of Charlotte) and overall very entertaining.
I received an eARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Do You Want to Start a Scandal bridges the gap between Tessa Dare's two recent series, Spindle Cove and Castles Ever After. It features Charlotte Highwood, younger sister of Minerva (A Week to Be Wicked) and Diana (Beauty and the Blacksmith), and Piers Brandon, brother of Rafe (Say Yes to the Marquess). Despite these connections, I feel like this book could easily be read as a stand-alone and is a good example of why Dare is such a popular historical romance writer.
I thought Charlotte was just adorable and a unique heroine. She has the disadvantage of being the youngest of three daughters and sometimes feel like she could never measure up to Minerva's intellect or Diana's beauty. But, she has great way with people and that enables her to put them at ease which isn't a quality that should be ignored. I really liked how determined Charlotte was to make her own life decisions even when it felt like she was being coerced by her mother and Society as a whole.
I wasn't sure how I would feel about Piers as a hero. He was a decent enough guy in his brother's book, but he just seemed so distant that I couldn't see him really taking the chance on love. Thankfully, Charlotte's personality won him over and he was forced to re-evaluate what he was doing with his life. I love it when a character is surprisingly blown over by someone else and how that situation changes their entire worldview. I was thankful that Piers didn't resort to moping about how he wasn't worthy of Charlotte like some heroes that have similar pasts.
I thought the premise was a little over-the-top, but so much fun! The whole mystery surrounding the lovers who were actually heard in the library was a great way to make Charlotte and Piers work together and, of course, fall even more in love. I also appreciated that, while being forced to marry someone when you were completely innocent of scandal isn't ideal, there was a lack of real danger that I found refreshing.
Tessa Dare knows how to provide readers with an interesting plot, likable characters, and plenty of swoonworthy moments. I had a great watching Charlotte and Piers figure out how much they mean to one another and then deal with those feelings. Do You Want to Start a Scandal is a must-read for any Tessa Dare fan and would also be a good bet for any readers that likes delightful historical romance.

>>>>>>>My synopsis (Review follows)<<<<<<<
Once upon a time a young English Miss attempted to do the noble thing and warn a Marquess about her mother's scheme to ensnare him for her daughter. Things did not go quite as planned...
'Charlotte wasn't even certain how it happened.
Had she bolted in panic? Had he swept he into his arms somehow?
One moment, she was staring in mute horror at the scraping, turning door latch, The next, she was ensconced in the library's window seat, concealed by heavy velvet drapes.
Pressed chest to chest with the Marquess of Granville.'
While they managed to initially escape notice, a couple. whom neither Charlotte or the Marquess could see, engaged in extremely scandalous behavior which was overheard by a small boy. Said boy mistook the throws of passion for sounds of murder. That same small boy came rushing into the library, quickly followed by others, in an attempt to save the poor woman he heard scream only to arrive after the amorous couple had left and Charlotte and the Marquess had come out of hiding.
Now, in order to clear her reputation and prevent herself from marrying a man she doesn't love, Charlotte must discover who was doing it in the library with the garter that was discovered at the scene of the crime. A task which will prove more difficult than she could ever have imagined.
>>>>>>>My Review <<<<<<<
This was a deliciously charming, hilariously funny, scandalously good read. If you have never read one of Ms. Dare's books this one will have you kicking yourself for not having done so sooner. It is the fifth installment of her Spindle Cove series, but you can read it out of order and not feel lost. I don't know if I can do this book justice with my review in conveying just how funny this one was. Needless to say, I'll be still chuckling over this one for days to come.
Charlotte is as smart as they come, but even smart people can make mistakes. Seeking out the Marquess in the study was by far one of her stupidest moves. She had meant to get in and out quickly, but from the beginning we can see the reaction these two have on each other, and immediately know we're in for a treat. The Marquess is handsome, rich, eligible, and is hiding a secret. One that will keep him from protesting too much to marrying Charlotte. After all agree to postpone a formal betrothal announcement until the house party is almost at an end, the two have some time to find out who really did it in the study.
I couldn't help but give this one 5 out of 5 roses. It was expertly crafted to tickle your funny bone. I adored everything from beginning to end. It is definitely going straight to my keeper shelf. I HIGHLY recommend this one. It had twists and turns, a touch of suspense, and a heaping helping of steamy romance. On the Lisarenee Romance Rating Scale, this one earned a STEAM rating--too hot for a fan, but you still have a handle on things. You should use extreme caution when reading a book with this rating in public. People may inquire as to why you looked flustered and flushed. I loved it.

I loved it.

I loved reading this. Just what I needed after some "just okay" reads. It was funny, it was sweet, it was romantic and had some of the best slow burn smexy scenes. Lately romances are either too slow to start or has the MCs jumping into bed way too fast. There isn't any build up, or tension, no chasing or pursuing. But DYWSaS had a nice balance.

Oh!
Grunt
Eeeeee!
Good heavens. Was the woman reeling with pleasure, or reciting vowels in grammar school?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Peach and the Eggplant talk between Charlotte and her mother - had me laughing non-stop.
Then there was the exchanges between Charlotte and Piers, like this one . . .
"You wouldn't believe what goes in these things." She offered her perfumed wrists. " Here, tell me which scent you prefer. Lilies and whale vomit, or lemon balm and beaver's arse."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I loved that these two understood each other inexplicably. They were two sides of the same coin and it was a fun lighthearted read. There was no OW/OM drama, no cheating, the H wasn't a manwhore and Charlotte was a virgin, but definitely not your typical blushing ignorant woman child. Tessa Dare reminds me so much of Lisa Kleypas. They have both perfected the art of tasteful humor and saucy romances that leave you with a satisfied smile and warm fuzzies.
The reason this one wasn't a five star read was I felt the big obstacle that causes a temporary rift between Piers and Charlotte, towards the end, didn't make a whole lot of sense. Why can't we have a couple fall for each other, team up and fight the villain without having to create this big fight/misunderstanding between them, that tears them apart? They were working so good together, finding their way to each other but that one scene was unexpected and unnecessary, IMO. It was easily resolved but it just felt out of place for me.
I will definitely be reading this one again for the laughs alone. I love finding romances that end with a HEA and can deliver feel good humor.

5 “Oliveview” Stars!!!!
This book is a combination of James Bond and the game of Clue, and I enjoyed every second of it. It’s witty. It’s s*xy. It’s everything “Tessa Dare.” When I think of Tessa Dare, this is the perfect amount of all that she is, wrapped up in one book. Can you tell that I love her?
"She unsettled him; he anchored her. Together, they could be more than they were apart."
This book is…..ONE…..GIANT……SWOON. And if you don’t like this book, then you can s*ck my aubergine (see below for definition of “aubergine” or you can just read this book!).
Ps. Just kidding. If you don’t like this book, that’s fine. Everyone can have their own opinion….please don’t hate me for saying s*ck my aubergine.
The Aubergine…aka Eggplant!!! Tessa, you put an eggplant in this book! Hilarious!!!!!!
Ok, let’s actually talk about the book.
Granville. Piers Granville…. is a spy for the Crown. He is on a mission as a guest of the house, but when Charlotte corners him to “save him” from herself, and they are caught in a misunderstood compromising situation, they have no other choice but to pursue marriage. Piers pursues Charlotte relentlessly, but I love that Charlotte doesn’t give in at first. She is determined to prove that they are too different, and she is also determined to keep her independence. I love that Charlotte knows exactly who she is and what she wants.
"Those walls, as you called them…They’re part of me now, and they are iron strong.” He lifted a hand to her face, skimming his thumb over her lower lip. “Even if I wished to, I wouldn’t know how to dismantle them.”
“I know,” she said quietly. “I know.” She wreathed her arms around his neck. “That’s why you need me. I’m going to burn them to the ground.”
Charlotte is…….absolutely hilarious. And so endearing. She is described as “innocent, not ignorant,” and that is perfect because she isn’t worldly like Piers, but she has a natural inclination of reading people and solving mysteries. She pursues this mystery and finds hints here and there throughout the book. I’m usually not a big fan of mystery novels, but there was less mystery and more romance, so it was perfect for me.
”If I let myself come anywhere near you” – he caught her wrists and lifted them, pinning her arms to the wall – “I’d have your skirts tossed up to your ears and my c*ck buried inside you before the rest of them looked up from their tea.”
Tessa Dare is easily in my top 5 favorite historical romance authors. Whenever I read Tessa Dare, I just know there will be swooning, and giggling and s*xy times. She has the whole package when it comes to historical romance. Her books and stories are always so much fun! I have loved every Tessa Dare book that I have read so far (I’ve read 4 of her books). I got an ARC of this book…..but I’m going to be buying the paperback to have on my shelf FOREVER!!!
This is the 5th book in the series. It is a standalone, so you don't have to read the first 4 to read this one. I only read one other book in this series before I read this one.

Do You Want to Start a Scandal is book five in the Spindle Cove series. I adore this series so much and couldn't wait to get my hands on this book. If you've been wanting to try out this series but haven't read the other books yet, I'd say you can read these out of order but you'll miss out on knowing some of the past characters that do make appearances.
We start off with our leading lady, Charlotte Highwood, wandering around at a ball until she spots Lord Granville, Piers Brandon. She just knows her matchmaking mother is going to try to persuade Piers to marry her, so she plans on warning him off before it even starts. They wind up getting caught in a situation where everyone thinks they are lovers and Piers is forced to either become engaged to Charlotte, or the scandal will ruin her chances of ever finding a husband. They tentatively make a plan that after two weeks time, they will become engaged, unless they are able to find the people behind the actual scandal. And so the investigation begins!
During the two weeks, Charlotte and Piers wind up in the hands of Charlotte's matchmaking mother and they grew closer with each outing. I enjoyed seeing Charlotte investigate the mysterious lovers and try to track them down with each passing day. With everything against her I was wondering if she would be able to figure it out in time. Charlotte quickly became my favorite character, she knew what she wanted (to find the truth) and went after it. While most females in that time would love to wind up married to Piers in any way possible, she enjoyed his company but wants to marry for true love. You have to respect that. Piers has a tight control over his emotions and his character grew on me quickly. I could see more emotions from him with each page turned and it really was a delight to read.
Do You Want to Start a Scandal will grab you from page one and not let go. I wound up reading this in one sitting because I had to know what would happen. I loved the little mystery added in, Tessa Dare is a master at all things Historical Romance. I have her books to thank my reignited passion for Historical Romance, I'm really loving the genre again. With well-rounded ladies that most can relate to, I feel this series is a must read. If you haven't read this series or this author before, I highly suggest it.

Talk about setting tongues wagging ! Tessa Dare's newest release " Do You Want To Start A Scandal " is all regency lovers around the globe are talking about, and I finally know why !
I started it weeks ago, but life has a way of stepping in and leaving no time to read. But today I had a whole glorious morning to read. So I curled up in my favorite chair, got me a cup of my favorite coffee ( Highlander Grogg , and do try, it's quite fabulous ) and set to finishing Charlotte and Pier's story. Oh, and what a marvelous story it was ! Let me tell you all the ways I fell in love ...
1. When Ms. Dare compared her book to a game of clue, but instead of finding who killed who in the library with a candlestick, you must find out who tupped who in the library. Well if that isn't enough to suck you into a story I don't know what is. So needless to say this story is rife with mystery and mayhem. But it's an adorable, hilarious, sensual kind of mystery and mayhem. One that had me falling in love with every turn of the page.
2. Ahh, then there's the characters... and I'm not just talking about Pier's and Charlotte, although those two are quite fabulous. Pier's is all dark, dangerous and simply delicious. He's the brooding hero who's love consumes all . And dear Charlotte, the lady is bold as brass and witty to boot. She's hilarious and heartwarming and quite capable of stealing your heart all on her own.. Then there's the secondary characters, such as Lord and Lady Parkhurst. oh, I do wish I could elaborate but sadly that would be too much of a spoiler and I wouldn't want to ruin the fun. Just wait for the surprise my dear friends, it's definitely worth it . And once you do finish and you feel the urge to gab, feel free to send me note, I'm all for gushing about who tupped who in the library ;)
3. Dare doesn't disappoint, she leads you on a tale that has you falling hopelessly in love from page. It's the type of book that has you flying through the pages, racing to see how it all ends, only to pick it back up and relive it again.

I think this may have to be my last Tessa Dare book. While her writing is engaging and her characters always start off as charming, by the time I get to the second half of the book, I find myself rolling my eyes at the slapstick antics and juvenile tendencies of their thought processes.
That is what happened here with Charlotte and Piers. In the beginning, I enjoyed the cute set-up, their personalities, and the banter. But that alone cannot carry a story. As the plot became more constrained by plot devices and contrivances (the "attempted" poisoning, the "murder" accusations, the "who tupped whom" in the library mystery that ended up being a farce), I rapidly lost interest in the story and the romance. Ultimately, with no genuine obstacles to face (either external or internal), even the couples' "Oliveviews" rang hollow. Seriously...hollow.
In fact, this is only getting a 3 instead of 2.5 because of the high quality of her writing voice and the fact that, for many readers, this kind of lighthearted romp may be exactly what they are looking for.
So, if you enjoy an escapist story that has almost no basis in reality, then read this because TD writes well, the pace is bubbly, and TD reveals a nice sense of humor. But if you want a romance that will tug at your heart or challenge you to look at love or family in a different or new way, this is not the book for you.

This was a fantastic read!!!! In EVERY WAY!! A six star rating if I could.
I am still processing this wonderful read and am not even sure how I begin this review.
We have two characters, Charolette and Piers who are caught in the library with a scenario that implicates them as "lovers". But in reality Charolette has come to warn Piers of her mothers schemes in trying to marry her off, but as she is warning Piers someone is approaching the Library. The two hide and "overhear" a couple having sex. The couple leaves and as Charolette and Piers come out of hiding they are discovered and thought to be the said "couple" (the host's son who is eight over hears all the "noise" that the lovers made and thinks someone is being murdered so comes to investigate but catches C & P instead and begins yelling that someone was murdered, which draws everyone to the library. Thats how the two are "found out").
Piers, our hero is perceived as a perfect and proper gentlemen, but also considered cold. He's Marquess of Granville and a diploma, but also a spy for the crown. Charlotte, our heroine is delightful. She has been dubbed "The Desperate Debutante" as her mother is doing anything/everything to have her married off, preferably to an Earl but would be happy with a Marquess too. Charlotte has a gift of understanding and reading people. She is kindhearted, smart and sassy (I love my sassy heroines).
"“What’s your plan, Agent Brandon?” she whispered. “Do you mean to kiss me so long and so hard that I’ll forget your identity?” “No.” His hand slid to the back of her head, tangling in her hair—so tightly she gasped. “I mean to kiss you so long and so hard that you’ll forget yours.”
This romance was absolutely wonderful. The two characters had such depth and were so likable that I didn't want this book to end. I loved them individually and together. The build up of there romance was perfection. Yes, there was instant attraction but the lust and love was built in such a perfect pace that made it so much richer to witness. Piers was alpha and sweet, what a perfect combination in his care and dialogue with Charolette. Charolette was kind but determined, strong but endearing. And watching her fall in love with Piers was the sweetest thing. She found something in him that she knew was worthy of love, and was determined to uncover it for herself to keep forever. Pier's found his peace and ability to love again in Charlotte. She "knew" him as no one else did and brought out a side of him that he thought was lost forever. Her effort and heart to stick with him was sigh worthy and so endearing. The two had such wonderful conversations and dialogue. Intelligent, funny, sassy and hot, these two have become on of my favorite couples.
She slid to the edge of her chair, leaning forward until her knees touched his. “Piers,” she whispered. “I said that I, Charlotte . . . with this beating organ in my chest commonly called a heart . . . love you. Most dearly. Does that make more sense?”"
“It wouldn’t change a thing. Those walls, as you call them . . . They’re part of me now, and they are iron strong.” He lifted a hand to her face, skimming his thumb over her lower lip. “Even if I wished to, I wouldn’t know how to dismantle them.” “I know,” she said quietly. “I know.” She wreathed her arms around his neck. “That’s why you need me. I’m going to burn them to the ground.”"
The plot was good, finding the real would be lovers. We had a bit of everything that I like: some angst, laughter, wonderful dialogue, sexual tension (and hotness for sure) and a bit of mystery too. The pacing was perfect. The secondary characters very enjoyable. The story line had great depth and layers to it. But best of all are these two, Charlotte and Piers, who give a us a wonderful romance that has everything you wish for in a love story. Very solid 4.5 for me.
Charlotte is the youngest sister and the last one unmarried, the first two having had starring roles in their own books already. Her mother is desperate to marry her off, and unfortunately for Charlotte, this means that the whole of London society thinks she's the desperate one. Which is why she thinks it's perfectly reasonable to sneak out of a ball to confront a coldly handsome Marquess about her mother's machinations. When they're discovered under very scandalous circumstances, Pierce, who is actually a spy for British intelligence, offers to marry Charlotte in order to keep his actual mission secret. Unfortunately for Pierce, Charlotte is incredibly curious, perceptive, and intelligent, and her resolution to solve the mystery of the true scandal and get out of a potentially loveless marriage keeps him on toes.
This book was sweet. It was exciting. It was fun. And most of all, it was hilarious in that joyful, playful Tessa Dare way. The interplay between Charlotte and Pierce is endlessly delightful, and the way that she unravels his most closely-held secrets is sweet and satisfying. This was an excellent read, and a perfect addition to the Spindle Cove series.
I received this book in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.

This is a fun story that brings together characters from both the Spindle Cove series and the Castles Ever After series. Charlotte Highwood is the youngest of the Highwood sisters and the only one still unmarried. Her mother is driving her crazy trying to match her up with eligible gentlemen. The embarrassment has already made her an outcast among the ton. She only wants to warn Lord Granville that she has no intention of letting her mother force them together. However, her plan immediately goes awry when a most embarrassing incident occurs and Charlotte and Piers are blamed.
As previously established in the Spindle Cove books, Charlotte loves to investigate a good mystery, so she sets out to find who is really responsible, clear her name, and get back to her plan to make a Grand Tour of Europe with her best friend. While Charlotte's methods are sound, bumblings and misunderstandings abound, providing many humorous episodes. Piers goes along with the investigation at first, although he's already decided that Charlotte will be a part of his life. He just doesn't think he can ever give her his heart. However, this man of action with a mysterious past may have just met his match!

Piers goes along with the investigation at first, although he's already decided that Charlotte will be a part of his life. He just doesn't think he can ever give her his heart. However, this man of action with a mysterious past may have just met his match!

Do You Want to Start a Scandal
By: Tessa Dare
Charlotte is just trying to survive a house party without starting another scandal. Instead she ends up embroiled in one. Quite by accident, she and Lord Granville become compromised. All because she was trying to warn him. Her mother’s efforts of throwing her at eligible men has plummeted her in the eyes of the ton. Everyone thinks she’s a gold digger or a floosy, but Charlotte’s not interested in money or titles, she just wants to find out who she is and have a bit of adventure, and maybe, find her true love.
Could Piers Brandon, Lord Granville be her next adventure? Will she sacrifice a friendship and her own self-esteem to keep from starting another scandal? Could an innocent young woman thaw the cold heart of a man who has been hiding secrets for a lifetime?
I really enjoyed the audio version of this book. It was like watching movie. I'm addicted to audio books especially when I'm working or driving. I will definitely have to read the rest of this series!

'Do You Want to Start a Scandal' by Tessa Dare is book 5 in the "Spindle Cove" series. This is the story of Charlotte Highwood and Piers Brandon, Lord Granville. I have been reading most all of the books in this series but strongly feel this is a standalone book.
Charlotte is from America and her family has turned into the talk of the town after they came to England and her sister's marriage were built with some scandal. With all that her Mother is know to through the sister into situation that might lead them to marriage. So Charlotte being proactive slips in on Piers to try to tell him to beware of her mom and what she might try to do to get him to marry her/Charlotte. But they end up being caught alone and now things are set for them to marry. Although Charlotte has set to try and stop this...Piers seems to just want to marry her. But Charlotte said she would not marry without love...
I so loved this book and the series.

A fun and enjoyable listen. The heroine marches to her own beat and pulls no punches ultimately quite unwillingly capturing the attention and pursuit of a Marquess who secretly is a spy and who is determined not to fall in love. However, the more he sets his sights on a marriage of convenience with the heroine, the deeper he falls for her unknowing spell as the heroine works tirelessly to solve a mystery that may mean the difference between her freedom or a loveless marriage of convenience.
Can a HEA possibly ensue under the circumstances, when both the hero and heroine are striving hard not to pursue it?
I devoured this little gem of a historical romance in a little less than a day. If you are looking for a sweet romance with a touch of suspense, then Do You Want to Start a Scandal may just be the book you're looking for.

Do You Want to Start a Scandal is a fun read with a little mystery and a lot of romance. The characters are funny, unique and extremely entertaining. There are several laugh out loud moments. The heroine, Charlotte, is determined to only marry for love and is constantly thwarting her mother's matchmaking schemes. She is honest, open, genuine and a little naïve when dealing with the compromising situation that she and Piers find themselves in. She is determined to save her reputation. Piers is a proper, staid gentleman with secrets and is instantly smitten with Charlotte but because of his past, he refuses to love. Their relationship grows as secrets are unraveled.

Dare creates such wonderful heroines and Charlotte was a darling. She is smart, confident, and feisty. She is the perfect match for Piers. I loved the differences in them as well. She was a total slob and he was Mr. Neat and Order. It all made me giggle. I loved the banter, unexpected surprises and joy of seeing these two fall.
Piers assignment, near death experiences and heated moments all added to the story. Charlotte played detective and impressed Piers. The storyline was kept light as the author provided bits of humor. The sex talk by Charlotte’s mother had me laughing so hard I saw tears. Charlotte is very straightforward and at times quite blunt creating humorous moments. Dare kept the drama low with a few turns and stumbles as our couple figured things out.

Tessa Dare has become one of my auto-buy authors and she never disappoints. I'm always guaranteed an entertaining story, relateable characters, witty banter, great chemistry, and laughs.
Do You Want to Start a Scandal is what you get when James Bond and Sherlock Holmes play a game of Clue and end up falling in love. Sort of. You'll have to read it for yourself to see what I mean. ;)
I enjoyed the banter and chemistry between Charlotte and Piers, but I really enjoyed their mutual respect for one another. It was fun to watch them uncover the mystery of what was really going on while also falling in love. And the wedding night talks between mother and daughter had me laughing out loud! I will never look at peaches and eggplants the same way again.

I reviewed this for Audible since I listened to it instead of reading but it was SO GOOD I wanted to add a review here too since it's such a delight! I was so excited for this release. Ms. Dare is one of my favorite historical romance writers so couldn't wait. Once my obligations for the week were over, I found things to do that would allow me to listen to this story without many interruptions. I just finished and it was wonderful. Funny at times, intrigue, really great personalities for male and female lead, everything was good, good, good. An all around enjoyable listen that I highly recommend. Ms. Rose did a great job too and seemed to interpret the personalities of the characters perfectly. Now to wait for the next.....

This heroine is too juvenile and the story is too juvenile. It's trying to be humorous but the effort is painfully obvious and the result is something a pre-teen (maybe) could stomach. I have liked several of this author's books before; she has taken a seriously wrong turn with this one.

Ms Dare's witty writing style makes for a couple of funny scenes, the most unforgettable of all being an anatomy lesson involving a peach and an aubergine, which you will never be able to look at in the same way ever again.
Too bad the romance itself falls short of her writing talent and rings both shallow and unplausible despite, if not because of the instalust and the countless sex scenes. Time to start a whole new series and get some fresh inspiration maybe? Whatever the case, this novel is not on a par with her previous achievements and you may want to buy and read this book only if you have read all books in the previous two series (which will at least bring you more fun than this one). Looking forward to seeing Ms Dare's past sparks fly again in the future.

I LOVED this book! Mostly, because I relate so much to the main character (I can be a hot mess and I have a meddling mother), who’s adorable and strong, yet vulnerable and tender. I totally relate to the struggles she has with Piers with the walls he has up (my partner can be similar). Her thirst for adventure; her impulsive, heart-centered naïveté and levity. I swear, Tessa Dare is a genius.
This is only the second novel of hers I’ve read, but I’m now officially hooked.

Great book deserving more than 5 stars! A young lady plans to tour the continent with her best friend and doesn’t want to get married but her mother is determined to find her a husband. Charlotte Highwood knows her mother has selected Lord Granville and she confronts him in the library to warn him about her conniving mother. She thinks he is a cold, unfeeling man and tells him she will marry only for love. He tells her he can never love anyone. Thus, their relationship begins. As she tells Granville, she is innocent but not ignorant. Lots of funny situations where you find yourself laughing.

I don't often squee when I hear about a new book release, but I always do when it's a book by Tessa Dare who makes historical romance fun, exciting, and passionate!
Blurb:
Do You Want to Start a Scandal is not only a wonderful romance, it's also a great mystery. The way it all unfolds is told brilliantly and oh, how I loved it! When it comes to historical romance, Tessa Dare always delivers the very best! I adore Charlotte and Piers, and watching them obtain their scandalous happily ever after was comical, and suited them perfectly!!

Sigh. I think I need to take breaks between Dare novels. I found the last one charming. This one was... meh.
Charlotte read so young and Piers so much older than her that it got kinda creepy. That and I found their chemistry lacking.
But honestly, this series (spindle cove) just doesn’t... oh well maybe I just don’t like the Highwood girls. They’re so very... something that I don’t like.
Ah well, I’ll take a break and maybe return to read about Rafe. I think that’s the only Tessa Dare book left for me!

I like a heroine with a quirky spirit. Charlotte was funny, and awkward, a very good character.
Piers, I wish we knew his age. Charlotte said he was too old for her, but using facts from the book, I figure he is around 28.
One thing I will say about Tessa's historical series, they seem to be very informed in carnal pleasures.

A nice little potential wrap up to two series (or at least a crossover between Tessa Dare's Spindle Cove and Castles Ever After). The absent bridegroom of Say Yes To The Marquess and the last Highwood sister are rushed into a relationship with some frankly weird (but of course comical) twists. Charlotte's good intentions & attempts at intrepid "problem-solving" clash with Lord Granville's deliberate blandness masking pure cunning. It's cute but they do make up their minds quickly, then protest a bit much.

The book was quite good, although I do believe it could be even better. I was a bit disappointed when the great mystery was solved as I expected something more... I don't know. Maybe it's just me. Charlotte and Piers had a good chemistry between them so that was good. Still an enjoyable read and often very funny.

Do You Want to Start a Scandal is another fantastic book by Tessa Dare, it is book number four in Castles ever after series and book number five in Spindle cove series.
Tessa Dare created another delightful historical romance with Hilarious dialogue and a mystery plot.
The main characters, Charlotte and Piers, are adorable. Their chemistry and banters are amazing and entertaining.
This is a page turner romance with passion, mystery and great characters.

About two years ago I read the last novel by this author and promised myself it was really the last one; however, I fell into temptation and got this one from the library - I'm glad I didn't pay for it because it was disappointing. I didn't like the protagonist and her immature ways, the sex scenes were inappropriate and quite boring - if I read once more "please, please" I'll go batty. I hope this time I really mean not to read this author's books.

This was a cute sweet read. Author keeps u interested throughout the entire story. Hot, steamy loves scenes. The characters are very developed . You get yo really know the character of the hero and heroine . Hero and heroine are very likable and have GREAT chemistry . Although is gets a little confusing when the mystery is discovered , this was still a good story-line . All in all i enjoyed it

Loved this book! Tessa Dare is a queen at writing charming, humorous and suspenseful Regency romance stories and this book was no exception. The characters were well-developed and likable, the story was charming and there was a liberal amount of humor throughout. Additionally, the writing and editing were flawless. In short, this was a great story from a great writer--I highly recommend checking this one out!

Started at 5 stars and then I proceeded to clip them off. Fun to start but went downhill about one third way thru book. Some laughs--would love to see the Peach and the Eggplant play! Lots of characters who didn't really contribute much and some even were unnecessary to the plot (little brother for instance). Was really interested in Lord Granville but he needed a hotter heroine.

Heroine too juvenile for the hero. The events were unbelievable and the story tried to be funny but did not succeed in my opinion. I skimmed through to see the mystery solved but it too was farcical. This was the first book by this author I read and I don't know if I can read another.

Piers is a spy for the Crown, sent to a house party to find out why another peer has some irregularities in his expenses. He gets blindsided by Charlotte who'd followed him to warn him that her mother was going to throw them together in hopes of marriage. The conclusion, as well references to Spindle Cove, is delightful.

This book had extremely likable characters, with an attraction at first sight which turns into an engagement of convenience. I love how Piers and Charlotte see the best in each other. Piers is afraid to love and Charlotte is afraid to live without love. There is plenty of romance, sexual tension, humor and some intrigue. And the best of happy endings. :)

I've always enjoyed Tessa Dare's books but Do You Want To Start A Scandal is to date the one I laughed out loud the most. It's not one of those poignant love stories that tugs at the heartstrings but it's a lighthearted, good read. Piers' character isn't that complex even though he's supposed to be. Personally, he didn't appeal to me as much as Charlotte did, who's the star of the book, with her dear, exasperating but lovable Mama second. There were many funny moments in the book that had me laughing out loud. No spoilers but just 3 words: peaches and aubergines. Go read the book to find out what I mean. :P

Some very funny moments especially in the first half of the book. At times, I wasn't sure what the heroine saw in the hero other than he was handsome and a good lover. The author used the excuse of a childhood trauma to justify his arrogance and being a bully.

This book is by far one of my favorite Tessa Dare has ever written. I loved Piers so SO much! We got a little glimpse of him in Castles book #2 and it was wonderful getting to know him! It was also lovely getting acquainted with Charlotte, the sister of two of Ms. Dare's other heroines from her wonderful Spindle Cover series.
While some romance readers love brooding, deeply troubled, borderline angry heroes who want to posses the woman they fall for, I much prefer lighthearted, funny heroes who still may have some troubles that the heroine can help them with, but do not become angry and upset at every little thing their lady does. Piers has troubles (and he royaly pisses me off with some of his behavior toward the end of the book) but overall, he is my favorite kind hero! He's kind, thoughtful, protective but not possessive, funny, sarcastic at times, and redeemable. And then you have Charlotte who is his match in every way!
If you are a Tessa Dare fan, I can't imagine you not loving this book! I sure did!
