Have you ever read a book where you've been so engaged in the story that you lost all concept of time?
Well, that was me reading this book.
It seemed like one minute I had just started reading it and then suddenly, it felt like 20 minutes had passed when in reality 4 hours had passed and I was at 86% of the story.
And what "a hell of a story" it was!
I tried to slow myself in reading to the end because I wanted to savour it as long as I could, but unfortunately, my curiosity got the better of me and I "had to know" how it all ended.

This is perhaps my favourite Lisa Kleyas book, only to be surpassed by "Devil in Winter".

Garrett Gibson was an amazing character to read.
Her perseverance, strength, intelligence, loyalty, integrity and wit made her an all-around perfect character.
The only character that could and would be the perfect match for her was Ethan Ransom.
HE. WAS. AMAZING!
He was smart, loyal, strong, and had an incredible dark edginess to him that perfectly complimented Garrett's character.

Wonderful writing, characters and story-line.
An excellent addition to the Ravenel Series, and a wonderful story to read!

I believe Lisa Kleypas has wanted to write this novel for a very, very long time. While it's true that she gives special acknowledgment to the historic Dr. Elizabeth Garrett Anderson as inspiration for the heroine (Garrett Gibson), Kleypas had been writing contemporary romance novels prior to the Ravenel series, having taken something of a retirement from historicals after "Love in the Afternoon." In those contemporary novels, women worked and were able to support themselves. They were independent. And I believe Kleypas wanted to bring that drive into a historical romance without her audience suspending too much disbelief.

Couple the truly unique heroine - the only female doctor in England - with a hero who grew up working-class Irish in London, and you have a historical romance that doesn't plod along with the cliches. Yes, there is a tony party among the political elite at one point, otherwise there are no balls or soirees. But there *is* a festival on the Clerkenwell Green with street food and fireworks! The peerage, and people aspiring to mingle with the peerage, are very much in the background in "Hello, Stranger." This is a story mainly concerned with the common folk - their joys and aspirations, as well as the myriad ways their lives are played with by higher-ups who couldn't care less if "one of the dots stopped moving" (to paraphrase Orson Welles). It's invigorating to read about this part of society in a historical romance.

And it also makes it so much more glaringly obvious how, in other novels, the characters' titles have acted as shields. Normally in other novels it's a shield against social ruin, but here... without their Ravenel friends, *horrible deaths* await the main characters. The stakes are high, and Garret Gibson & Ethan Ransom are truly vulnerable, despite their mutual intelligence and tenacity.

The love Ethan & Garrett have for each other truly shines through this novel - and (for which I am so grateful) they are *adults* about it. Their maturity is as refreshing as their social status. Shakespeare's "Hamlet" makes an unexpected appearance as the villain's favorite bit of literature, though the other characters all seem to be in agreement regarding how terrible the play is, which amused me (while it contains some of Shakespeare's best writing, the eponymous character is hardly admirable). I kept hoping Garrett would fire back at the villain that her favorite play of his was actually "King Lear" and how the characters, all believing their (selfish) interests are best for Britain, coalesce to destroy the kingdom... but maybe that's just because Lear is my own favorite. Alas...

Altogether, this is easily the bast of the Ravenel series by far, and I eagerly await "Devil's Daughter" (which sounds like it could be a tear-jerker). Kleypas struck gold with this one, enough that I hope it's nominated for the RITA.

I just finished reading this book and was so sad it ended. How is it that an author tells a tale in just under 400 pages, and yet not one element of the story was just there as a filler, and the thing reads so easily that I did not notice it was almost ended? Ethan and Garrett's story is one with great sexual tension, then some steamy sex happens along with lots of skullduggery and exciting action. Ethan is an undercover detective working for a parallel organization to London's legitimate police force and spy agencies, so his work and attempt to expose his boss's treachery makes a very interesting back drop to the story. Kleypas is a master at all of this and then too she throws in some very interesting historical facts! I am a former Medical Technologist who worked in a blood bank, and when I read her description of Garrett transfusing Ethan, I was mesmerized by the vision in my head of that contraption she described!

Ethan is the bastard son of a brutal Ravenal Lord who has an affair with a servant. She is forced to turn to prostitution to survive when he and her family reject her. She marries a man who then helps her raise Ethan but they live a lower class existence due to her husband's alcoholism. When Ethan meets West Ravenal for the first time it is just so tension filled it made me want to learn more. I love the Ravenals, but the other side story is how and why Ethan hated the Ravenals and how he came to really know his cousins. West Ravenal is an awesome character in this story and I want to know more about him.

The heroine, Garrett, is fashioned after a real person in history. Garrett is the first and only woman doctor in London during this era. She is beautiful, career driven, independent, strong and smart. In the beginning she is so driven by her purpose to practice her calling and her need to heal people, that she thinks she will never find a true equal partner, so she accepts that she will never marry nor have a family. She rejects anything that would take her away from her patients. Through Ethan, she learns she can have an equal partner to love and respect her, still have her career, and also have marriage and a family. This is an extraordinary thing for a woman to have in that day and age. The story shows what can happen when two people grow to trust and respect each other and form a strong bond. And did I already say that they have a torrid sex life? I think I did. I love that they have a very passionate partnership. Kleypas' writing in this area is especially superb.
This is a worthwhile and fun read, and I can not wait to read the next book in this series, because what little I saw of West Ravenal, I think I am more than a little intrigued right now...Read this book, you will not be disappointed, it is truly a gift...so worth it!

Lisa Kleypas continues to deliver unusual but extremely likable main characters who may be different than main stream society but have a real-ness that readers can relate to and root for. Dr. Garrett Gibson is the first female physician in England. She works for my favorite Welsh department store owner Rhys Winterbourne and has doctored some of our past heroines, so is a familiar sideline character. In Hello Stranger, Garrett gets rocked out of her steady clinical world when Ethan Ransom, ex-Scotland Yard investigator, steps in to help her fight some men hassling her as she’s walking home through a bad neighborhood after work. His offer to help train her in self defense puts them at close quarters and of course their chemistry sizzles. However, Ethan is in the middle of an investigation and doesn’t want to endanger Garrett so tries to leave her be, but fate keeps throwing her in his path.

I love how this authors heroines are unusual for their time. Always smart and in this instance an educated doctor, not your typical society miss. Garrett is a bit stoic and cool, not used to the more passionate emotions but she is so well balanced by Ethan! He has got to be the most romantic historical male I’ve read in quite a long while. As it turns out, he has Irish roots and I don’t know if the author was trying to portray his Irish-ness with a poetic side, but wow. I’m married to an Irishman and I wish he spoke so poetically to me about his feelings! Ethan was a man’s man, yet was definitely not afraid of showing how he felt. If I were Garrett, he would’ve rocked my world too.

This was another fun novel by Lisa Kleypas. Was it my favorite of hers? No. Though I did enjoy these characters and learning about the difficulties Garrett had as a female doctor in a man’s world, even if learning about it in a historical romance, was eye opening.

I can’t wait for West Ravenels book. He was very present in Hello Stranger and he was hilarious! His romance is going to be worth the wait.

There was nothing really wrong with this book but it just didn’t grab me the way others in the series have.

<Spoiler Alert>

Garrett is an interesting woman, being the only female doctor in the whole country and trained in self-defense, but she was hard to warm up to. Her habit of saying awkward, highly technical medical facts in the midst of romantic moments made her come across as Temperance Brennan of Bones fame and that’s not really a compliment.

I suppose, given her background, that her behavior was, at least, believable, but that still didn’t make me like her. There were so many scenes where Ransom was being all sweet and romantic and Garrett would ruin it by jabbering on with some totally out of place medical trivia. It had me just rolling my eyes and skimming the scenes that in any other book would have been what made me fall in love with the relationship.

And because Garrett was so sexless and aloof, I just didn’t understand why she suddenly started throwing herself at Ransom. She’s so controlled and driven to succeed as a doctor, facing adversity at every turn and constantly having to keep her reputation above reproach, that you’d expect her to have some unbelievably strong attraction to Ransom in order to justify risking all she’s worked for, but it’s just not there. The transition from her telling Ransom to get lost to her begging him to go to bed with her happened more or less overnight and I just didn’t buy it.

Ransom was decent as the hero. He had all the standard hero qualities of being strong, handsome, noble and troubled. I liked that he was watching over Garrett whenever she went into the seedier parts of town on her charity work. And he very clearly appreciated Garrett for who she was. He respected her abilities and didn’t try to change her. But he did stray a smidge into beta territory by essentially giving in to Garrett on every point.

The bit with Ransom’s supervisor in the spy game being dirty was a bit on the weak side. I thought it was lame that Ransom, supposedly this highly trained uber agent who was secretly working to get the goods on his evil, mastermind-level boss…was being followed around by another random agent for weeks and didn’t realize it. Seriously? Kleypas tried to pass this off as Ransom being so hung up on Garrett that he didn’t pay proper attention but I just don’t buy it. I could maybe see if it had just been one night, but if he seriously had no clue he was being followed for weeks on end then he’s not a very good agent. Now, of all times, he should be on his guard about things because the stakes are so high.

And I didn’t understand why he so easily told Garrett all the top secret information he was supposed to be hiding. Nor why he involved her in his espionage the night of the party. Using the old “kiss the woman so it looks like we were just here for a romantic rendezvous, not snooping around” trick is so clichéd as to be laughable. And I can’t believe the other spy fell for it. Especially when he knew the spy master was already suspicious that Ransom had turned on him. It made the whole thing feel very toothless and like everyone involved were a bunch of morons. Not this ultra-elite group of bad@sses.

Oh, and why was Garrett’s father even a character in the story? He served no purpose whatsoever and was always invariably off screen. Why include him at all??

So, all in all, I didn’t hate this book but I didn’t really like it either. I was decidedly unmoved by the romance and the rest of the plot was really weak.

I had every intention of reading the first three before this: but that (along with every other plan I made this month) went left and disappeared down the rabbit hole. But, I didn’t have to worry since I was able to follow the story without issues, and delight in the connections made within the book. Garret is a wonderfully independent, rebellious and intelligent woman with zero care for convention or societal pressures. She’s a physician with her own successful clinic and little time or patience for fancy society parties or the marriage-mart atmosphere. She’s not interested in marriage or other more traditional paths for women, but she’d never thought that it was because she hadn’t met the right man.

Ethan Ransom is a man without limits, with a nodding acquaintance with rules, even as he chooses to ignore most of them. Headstrong, intelligent, capable and accomplished, his tenure with Scotland Yard is over, and he’s finding intrigue and interest in a beautiful physician, one that spurns the rigamarole of society as vehemently as he does himself. Now when the intrigue and danger for him have grown tenfold, he’s finding that keeping all these secrets and staying aloof, particularly when Garett is involved and potentially in danger, doesn’t seem quite so interesting or fulfilling.

This was a wonderful story of growth and self-realization as both Garrett and Ransom come to discover their attraction is far more than superficial, and that unexpected (and perhaps even once thought unwanted) connections are possibly the best things ever. Both of them are very similar in their disdain for the overblown affectations of society, preferring self-determination and effort to make their ways in the world. While Garrett tilted to the slightly too modern end of the scale for a woman of her time, she was consistent in her beliefs and actions, and her willingness to accept the changes that would include Ransom felt natural and possible. For his part, Ransom is a wonderfully drawn character: protective, honest, intelligent and not afraid to accept or ask for advice from Garrett, and his moments where he shares his heart are lovely. He fits with Garrett, and she with him, in ways that make them both better people, while giving readers moments to swoon and enjoy.

I received an ARC copy of the title from the publisher for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.

“I’d love you night and day, if I could,” he whispered. “There’d be no limits for us. No shame. You and me, in the dark . . . that’s all I’ve ever wanted.”

No one writes like Lisa Kleypas. No. freaking. one. She so eloquent. Everything from her lush descriptions to the detailed scenes to the multidimensional characters to the sensual build of the romance is alive and vivid and tangible. You can’t help but fall madly in love with every detail that makes up her stories. It’s magic. Pure, unequivocal, heart pounding beauty that I am so in love with. I swear, I’m swooning as I write this! I am such a HUGE fan! And you know what’s so crazy? I haven’t even been reading this author that long. In fact, I only discovered her books a couple months ago when I discovered the historical romance genre.

:::cue massive gasp:::

I know! I can’t wrap my head around that either. It’s like once you discover a Kleypas novel you learn what romance SHOULD be. It’s bliss with deep feels. She’s the ONLY author I’ve ever read that makes me lose myself every single time I read her. ANOTHER level. I truly can’t recommend her enough.

“Forget me,” he whispered after their lips parted. And he left swiftly, without looking back.” <<— OH, THE FREAKING FEELS!

Hello Stranger is the 4th book in Ravenels series. Though I have yet to read the first three, each novel is a standalone and I had ZERO issues following along. From the start I was engrossed as Garrett Gibson—the only female Doctor in London—finds herself in a precariously dangerous situation. I was riveted by this woman’s self-confidence and sharp whit. She’s interesting, funny, intense, quirky, fierce, and so freaking smart. Her personality charmed me through and through.

While Garrett tries to maneuver herself out of this situation our hero shows up! And it is ELECTRIFYING! Ethan Ransom is dark and alluring and dangerous, adding an intensity to this story that has your breath catching. These two leave you dizzy, their chemistry off the charts delicious, their interactions bursting off the page with sizzle. Ethan’s been watching Garrett for awhile now, compelled and drawn to her in a way he can’t explain. And a friendship and romance ignites that leads to some serious excitement in Dr Gibson’s life. Maybe a little more than she ever expected.

Once I started reading I couldn’t stop. I was fevered for these two, desperate to know more about them. Lisa’s talent shines as she takes the time to build these characters, to give them depth and backstories that bring them to life. Ethan’s secrets unfold right before your eyes and Garrett is the perfect woman to deal with them.

I absolutely loved watching as they fell in love, loved experiencing the twists and turns that Hello Stranger provided. This couple find themselves in some intense situations that had me on the edge of my seat, with tears in my eyes, wholly invested. Everything from the sweet romance to the suspense was perfect. And I must say, West Ravenel is the ultimate charmer, a delightful addition to this story that had me consumed too.

Overall, I can’t recommend this enough. It was sweet and sexy, yet deeply emotional and suspenseful all at the same time. I had so many emotional moments where I gasped, sighed and swooned. Lisa is a masterful storyteller and Garrett and Ethan’s turbulent romance was breathtaking from start to finish.

I'm shamefully behind on my Lisa Kleypas historical series (The Hathaways might have been my last reads from her?) but have good memories of them, so when I got a chance to read Hello Stranger with a doctor heroine and spy hero, I jumped at the chance. Though the fact that the heroine has a male name (neatly explained early on, but still...) continued to throw me for a loop all book long, this book was a lot of fun to read. Kleypas gave our hero some of the best lines ever, like

“The first moment I saw you, I knew you were my share of the world. I’ve always loved you. If I could choose my fate, I’d never be parted from you. Acushla…pulse of my heart, breath of my soul…there’s nothing on this earth more fair and fine than you. Your shadow on the ground is sunlight to me.”

(that one while he was literally on death's door!) and

“He knows that where you’re concerned, I…have…a preference.” Guiding her past the palms, he opened the service door and took her to the landing of a servants’ stairwell...

...“Preference,” Garrett repeated cautiously. “What does that mean? You prefer me to what?”

As they stopped in a corner, Ethan’s head and broad shoulders were silhouetted in the faint glow of a sconce on the opposite wall. She began to tremble as he stood over her, big and dark, his nearness awakening a pulse of high music in her.

“I prefer you to everything,” he said gruffly, and bent to take her mouth with his.

I mean, really. Could anyone possibly mount a defense against lines like that, I ask you?

I resisted the urge to look up 1870s medical procedures and knowledge, so I have no idea how accurate they are in the book, but OMG Kleypas absolutely used them to great effect here. Between the major medical emergency and the suspense drama--along with the aforementioned swoony bits--this one was nearly impossible to put down.

Thank goodness it was a Sunday ;)

Hello Stranger is the fourth book in The Ravenels series, but worked just fine as a standalone--the Ravenels were very much secondary characters for most of the book; West, who hasn't had a book yet, has the biggest role here...and OMG, does his part have me sitting on the edge of my seat, waiting for his book to come out?

Yes. Yes, it does.

Rating: 4 stars / B+

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

There really isn’t much I can say to express the feeling you get when you open up a Lisa Kleypas book. Everything around you stops and you are transported to a different place and time. When I started reading HELLO STRANGER, this was exactly what happened. I was swept off by these magical words and traveled through time to experience this wonderful story. Because that’s what happens, you experience the magic of her words, not just read them.

It’s not just one thing that makes Hello Stranger special. I can sit here and tell you all about my admiration for the wonderful character that Dr. Garrett Gibson is, because I truly found her inspiring. And I can wax poetic about my love for Ethan Ransom in and his rugged, intense, manliness. But there’s one thing after the other that just made this my favorite read in the series.

For starters, the research that Ms. Kleypas has done, in both police procedure and the medical profession at the time, comes through in this book more so that in previous ones. And while that may seem like it can bug down the book with detail and information, it delivers it in a way that just feels so natural. Which is the perfect way to do so because it’s just who Garrett is. I really liked that the author didn’t shy away from showing us that side of the story and applaud her for her execution. It was flawless and interesting.

The plot of this book is full of mystery and intrigue and that is not something I’m used to seeing in Lisa Kleypas’ books to this degree. But it was ohhh so good! I just had to know what was going to happen, how where things going to turn out. And yes, I admit to holding my breath at some points. What an exciting ride!

Then there’s the romance. Let’s not forget that as much as this is about wonderful characters and has an amazing plot, in the end I need to see these characters fall in love. And the Queen delivered. I loved every second, every interaction, every word. I loved how these two completely opposites were attracted to each other. Their relationship was just as intense as they are as individuals.

If you haven’t read this series, then rectify that immediately. This was my favorite so far and I can’t wait for the next one to come.

Lisa Kleypas delivers consistently good reads. She is my favorite author. I also read Grisham, Follet, Hersey, Steinbeck... Those are all different genres, of course, but I enjoy Lisa Kleypas the absolute most.

Her novels are pleasing and rewarding. Her novels are happy reads with happy endings. I as a reader always feel satisfied for having read one of her books. I've read every Lisa Kleypas book. I used to own all of them in paper back and I had Brown Eyed Girl in hardback, it's a good keepsake of my favorite author.

This is book 4 of the Rachel's. Lisa Kleypas does a wonderful job of interweaving plots between 3 and 4 books in her series and you could pick up a book from the middle or end and you wouldn't feel like you had missed out in key character development or feel lost for having skipped around in her series.

I've done this before on accident, read a book out of order in the series. The first book I read by Lisa Kleypas was Again the Magic. Whoo is that one steamy! All of her books are steamy while retaining some innocence, which is refreshing.

Of course, I'm absolutely sure if you read one of her books out of order, you'll want to go back and read the volume you might have missed. You'll probably even want to read the series over again in correct order, it makes the series even more satisfying and rewarding.

Lisa Kleypas is a fabulous author. She writes with such care and cinsideration for her reader. She is careful to make details of her story as historically accurate as possible and on occasion does take an artistic literary liberty for the sake of the plot. At the end of her newer books, she often includes additional indormatioon about the era and why she elected to have it in her book. One thing that comes to mind is the first book in the Ravenel Series depicts a hot water shower. Of course these were few and far between in the year she had set the book, but there were a few in recorded existence around the time period. Some peiole grumble too much about period writing and accuracy. I believe she makes good arguments for her choices to depart slightly by 1 or 2 years or what ever for historical accuracy and her the enjoyability of her book. I don't think she should have to defend her position and literature, but that's heresay. I trust her enough as an author to know she does stay true enough to specific time period that any slight deviation is not misleading or a misrepresentation of the Victorian era.

So if you haven't read Lisa Kleypas before, you could start with this book and go back and read the other 3 Ravenel stories.

Hello Stranger follows a character she has been developing for the last 3 books in the Ravenel series. Dr. Garrett Gibson is fictitious, of course, but is a very compelling heroine. She's the first and so far only female doctor in England, having attended Sorbonne in France.

The love interest of Dr. Gibson is Mr. Ethan Ransom, a character who has also had a few appearances in the Ravenel series.

The book will keep you guessing, just a little. It seems like a second interest might develop, but as a reader, I kept hoping the first love interest would perservere. I won't reveal either way what happens! I dont want to let slip any spoilers.

I wish I could detail the characters just a little more, but I really wouldn't want to rob anybody that reads my review the sense of reward and pay off when they read Hello Stranger. Finding out the little tidbits for yourself really are part of the experience of a Lisa Kleypas book. She has a gift of peppering in details and twists that give me immense satisfaction.

Please pick a Lisa Kleypas book and find out why she's so fabulous.

My title of my review is a slight reference to a line (or lines) in the book. Hopefully, you've either read or will read Hello Stranger and you'll probably scoff at my joke, but maybe a small part of you will find it humorous.

Historical Romance is often a genre I forget that I absolutely adore until I’ve jumped back in, and Hello Stranger was just the one to remind me of that. Both smartly written and tightly structured, it had the perfect blend of charmingly witty characters to keep it interesting and light while maintaining a forward-moving plot of steamy romance and cloak-and-dagger intrigue.

Garrett was a strong-willed heroine possessing the brains and unshakable gumption of a woman not of her century, and she truly came alive on the pages. I admired her mind and force of will to be a physician in a time when men didn’t allow it, and how she managed to still have the ability and strength to show vulnerability to those closest to her. But it wasn’t just that; it was that stubborn fire in her that refused to be cowed even when confronted with opposition. Her connection with Ethan was fed from that part of her, and watching him fall for that fire was magnificent. He was a rare man for that time–his openness of his attraction to her and his need to protect and not stifle just to name a few–and his want for her to succeed made it so easy to fall for him. Kleypas’ portrayal of the her medical profession–depicted brilliantly and effortlessly–encapsulated the reader into Garrett’s world and her everyday life with aplomb. It was so seamlessly woven into her character that I was ravenous to follow along and watch her work. I daresay that Garrett was a rare heroine to come across and I couldn’t help but love every bit of how she was written.

I’m embarrassed to admit this was my first Lisa Kleypas book (even though I own many of her books), and I’ve come to realize that I’ve been missing out on a fantastic writer and storyteller. Hello Stranger‘s boldly beautiful romance and enigmatic suspense had me glued to its pages, and I didn’t want it to end. Though it stands on its own, I look forward to reading the ones before it and continuing on with this series. This is a writer and story not to miss.

Also, just to add, West was probably one of the most effortlessly hilarious secondary characters in a book and I’m dying for his story so I do hope it’s next.

Lisa Kleypas is my favorite historical romance author and Hello Stranger is such a great addition to her amazing books! I was captivated by this unique story about a woman who defied her time and a man that stole her heart.
Dr. Garrett Gibson is the only woman physician in England and she is focused on her work. She has no time for marriage, affairs or temptations… until Ethan Ransom. Ethan can give her pleasure without demanding anything else and that’s perfect in her eyes.
Ethan, a former detective in Scotland Yard and now a spy, hides in the shadows of England’s streets and he trusts only himself. He is dangerous, mysterious and secretive. His life has no room for the brilliant doctor but fate brings them together again and again.
I loved Garrett’s character. She is independent, opinionated and she follows her own rules. She is smart and feisty and she might be different than the average heroine but she is so interesting. Although, she is strong and she can hold her own, she has her vulnerabilities and a softer side that shows to Ethan.
Ethan is nothing you expect. Despite he is an assassin, a man born into poverty he has a heart so sweet. His words are so romantic and he balances so nicely the aloofness of Garrett. He is irresistible and his Irish origin makes him swoony. He is a killer with a soul of a poet.
Their relationship is sweet and exciting and you will melt with some of their scenes.
I have to say that I am really intrigued by a secondary character and I cannot wait to read his story. Also, there are cameos from several characters from previous books and that’s always nice to read about.
Lisa Kleypas knows how to write historical romance books that are always engaging. I am so excited about the next one about the Devil’s Daughter!

Hello, Stranger is a much-anticipated book in the Ravenel series featuring an unconventional heroine and a dark and dangerous hero. I was captivated from the first page to the last, and now I want to read it all over again in audio.

"Beg pardon, miss . . . but why are you a doctor? It's not as if you was a horse face. Why, I know at least two blokes in my division who'd be willing to tied the knot with you... If you could do some cooking and mending, that is."

Dr. Garret Gibson has been a favorite character of mine since Marrying Winterborne, and I was so excited to see that she was getting her own story. She is such a unique and practical heroine - an educated physician during a time when women in England weren't even allowed to go to medical school. Not only is she educated, she also knows how to take care of herself and doesn't hesitate to wield her walking cane against would-be attackers in the seedy streets of lower-class London. I totally have a girl crush on Garret. At a time when most people thought too much intelligence and learning would cause females to become enfeebled, Garret went above and beyond to live her life as she wished. I loved that she bucked the trend and persevered despite the opinions of society. Garret underwent some personal growth in this book... a transition from the workaholic career woman to one who realizes she doesn't have to sacrifice her professional passion for a personal life.

"A stranger emerged from the shadows, cool darkness spun into the form of a man. He was tall and well-proportioned, his athletic form clad in a plain shirt, gray trousers, and an open vest."

I just love it when the hero emerges from the shadows! Ethan Ramson (awesome name) was a delicious hero and that imagery of him melting out of the shadows just got to me. Ethan was a detective rising quickly through the ranks of Scotland Yard before he left to carry out dangerous and mysterious work for the Home Office. He is intrigued by our unconventional heroine, and we often finding him following her through the streets of London's underbelly. I felt sorry for Ethan. He was torn between his attraction and respect for Garret, and his own issues regarding his dangerous lifestyle and poor upbringing. I loved seeing Garret coax him out of the shadows.

The pace of this relationship unfolded perfectly with the pace of the storyline and length of the book. There was a good buildup and great chemistry before we got to any intimacy, and the pair absolutely smoldered when they were together. Ethan had some very special abilities that he put to good use to educate our heroine in the amatory arts, so this book got a bit more steamy than I expected.

There was also a nice suspense plot that unfolded with the story and helped advance the plot along. Ethan and Garret made a great team and I liked that he didn't coddle her overmuch in an effort to keep her safe. Secondary characters from the prior books made appearances, including the Ravenel brothers. West Ravenel had a sufficient amount of page time in this installment and it has me excited for his story now. I loved his positive and flippant attitude and am sure to fall in love with the reformed rake... but it will be very tough to top Ethan Ransom.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received from the publisher, Avon.

Ever since the Downton Abbey TV show I’ve developed a new appreciation for historical romances. So, it comes as no surprise to anyone that Lisa Kleypas is hands down one of my favorite historical romance authors! Although, I don’t read very many historical romances, but Kleypas always has a way of sucking me into the beauty of ball gowns, corsets, and handsome suitors. I’m especially fond of her Wallflower and Hathaway series, which made reading the Ravenels a no brainer.

Hello Stranger is the 4th installment in the Ravenels series. These books can all be read together or as a stand-alone. Having read the three previous books I personally enjoyed reading them in order, but they’re not necessary to enjoy Hello Stranger. Honestly, I wasn’t sure how much I’d like Hello Stranger, but I ended up loving Dr. Garett Gibson and Ethan Ransom story more than I thought I would! Garett is such a strong independent woman and I easily found myself falling for Ethan’s character! Plus, together they were the perfect match for one another. Also, I always appreciate how previous characters pop back up throughout the series! I just can’t get enough of the whole Ravenel family and I can’t wait to see what Kleypas has in store for us next!

5 Stars for Hello Stranger by Lisa Kleypas! I’ll be counting down the months for her to once again take me back to the streets of London in the Victorian era!

I consider historical romance to be my escape books. Whenever I'm having a tough week or just need a break from life, I escape into the pages of the past and settle in for an enjoyable story. Lisa Kleypas has written over twenty books and knows how to lure her readers with fierce women and the handsome men.

Dr. Garrett Gibson is a determined woman bucking the conventions of the day. She's a physician in London and damn good at her job. And while she loves her life, her friends wonder if all work and no play is taking its toll on Garrett's life. Then she meets Ethan and her life goes from safe to dangerous in about two seconds.

Ethan was captivated with Garrett from the moment he met her. And though he lives a dangerous life, he can't seem to stay away. He works for a dangerous man and is involved in a plot that could take down the government. Inadvertently, Garrett gets involved and is herself a target. And then it gets crazy good from there.

"A woman who defies her time" and "A man who breaks every rule" is the perfect combination. I love a romance book that has the perfect mix or romance with an exciting plot. This book filled all my expectations. If you're looking for a book to escape, Hello Stranger is just the book you need.

An amazing 5 stars for Lisa Kleypas' Hello Stranger! This has been truly one of the best books of 2018, a tale that kept me turning the pages long into the night! I immediately fell in love with Dr. Garrett Gibson's characters, she is gutsy, strong, and knows what she wants. She is also very sweet and loving! I also really enjoyed reading about a female doctor, who challenged all those around her and the times in which she lived. She a very relatable character that I feel many women will feel drawn to. Also, our hero of the tale, Ethan Ransom who is also very strong, yet very sexy and passionate. He's also a very secretive man, a former detective for Scotland Yard, and soon readers will know all that's hidden within.

Kleypas' writing is as impeccable as always, I just absolutely love how she draws the reader in and really gives them a true, deep look into the characters lives, one can't help but feel they know the characters. She also throws many twists and turns with lots of tension throughout the book and really takes her readers and her characters on quite the ride. An amazing author that I highly recommend to anyone! I absolutely loved Hello Stranger and can't wait to read more of the Ravenels' in coming books!

I have always loved Lisa Kleypas, from her contemporary to historical romance novels. I love how the strength and independence that her heroines show and this novel is no different. All characters are well developed, and it's nearly impossible not to fall in love with Garrett and Ethan. I have read all the other books in the series (haven't reviewed them just yet) and I must say that I have been waiting for this book since Garrett appeared in previous books. Kleypas mixes the perfect amount of comedy, drama, and romance in her novels. I am eternally waiting for her next novel!!!

I should've reviewed Hello Stranger long before now. I read it before release, totally fell in love with it and even met Lisa Kleypas for the first time on release day. This book was absolutely delightful — everything I love about historical romance wrapped into one book. Please don't take my lack of a review before now as a sign I didn't enjoy the book.

I loved Garrett from the first time I met her, so I was thrilled to get her story. What a woman! I love how many unique heroines there are in historical romance and, to be honest, Lisa's are always some of my favorites. A woman doctor back in the 1870s? Who'd have thunk it? Ransom was so swoony I didn’t know what to do with myself. I wasn't sure how I would feel about him as a match for Garrett, but it worked so well. They balanced each other out perfectly.

I loved every little thing about Hello Stranger. The characters, the slow burn romance, the feels and swoons. It was an absolute gem. Now, I’ll be (im)patiently waiting for West to get his own book and HEA.

I forget sometimes how smart Lisa Kleypas is as a writer and historian. This is a well crafted romance with two very appealing characters but much of the book incorporates actual criminal and medical history, including real corruption in the London police department and the Home Office, the Irish problem, as well as the dangers of blood transfusion in an age before blood types were recognized. Not only did I enjoy the story but I learned a good deal about the polluted state of the Thames, the real dangers of asphyxiation if you fell in the river, and the challenge of operating in a time before antibiotics were available. The fact that the character of Garrett, based on an actual female physician, the only woman doctor allowed to practice in Britain at the time, was successful is all the more exciting and impressive.

4.5 stars: This book was included on a list of the best romance novels of 2018 so far, and once I saw that the heroine was a 19th century physician, I knew I had to read it! I wasn’t disappointed! I love that Garrett is based on a real woman who defied convention and pursued her passion for science and public service. I also love that Ethan loves her and her modern nature unequivocally, and that the obstacle to their happiness is his profession and his inability to embrace the future. Like Kleypas’ Bow Street Runner series, I enjoyed that Garrett and Ethan weren’t tortured aristocrats, but common, if extraordinary, people finding uncommon love. Some have complained about the political themes of this story, that people flock to romance for the escapism aspect, but we’re living in a politically fraught reality, and this story’s need to speak truth to power and protect innocent lives spoke to me and validated my own feelings. My only issue was some of the Ravenel family drama which felt a little forced, slowed things down, and took us away from Garrett and Ethan, but I guess Kleypas had to make it fit into the Ravenel series somehow. Now when can we get a Garrett and Ethan sequel?

Lisa Kleypas is one of my favorite authors in historical romance. Her books have something special that makes me read them again and again, and they never lose their charm. I have fallen in love with many of her heroes over time. Ethan Ransom is one of those romantic heroes who make you sigh with love.
There is a scene that is not realistic. When I am reading a book it bothers me a lot that unrealistic situations happen, because it distracts me from the story and I question the course of the story and the author's reasons for having written that scene. I wonder "But what is the author thinking? How could she/he have ruined the story?" Because it is one thing to take some license and another to practically resurrect a walking dead man.
I really enjoyed West's scenes, I think he stole the spotlight from the main protagonists. I can not wait to read hisbook. 2019, this will be a long wait.

I have enjoyed the others in the Ravenel series, so I picked this up. A lady doctor during a time when women couldn't be doctors (one exception historically) and a former Scotland Yard detective are a nice departure from the dukes and earls of most historical fiction. Their attraction is undeniable, both to each other and to the reader. The extra intrigue in the storyline is well done. I appreciate seeing other characters again, as well, that are throughout the series. A keeper series for me.

OMG. This was worth the wait. Garrett is my kinda chick. Ethan is positively swoonworthy but the scene stealer, hands down, was West!! I was in bed at 11:30 pm in my hotel, buried under the covers literally chuckling throughout the surgery scene, trying not to wake my husband. It was both tense and hilarious. The sense of family that Ethan now has because of West was so sweet and fun to watch develop and was just as fun and adorable as the romance. Garrett is hands down one of my most favorite heroines ever. Strong, capable but loving and keeps it real with everyone around her. She deserves Ethan and he deserves and understands her. I loved the descriptions of the medical procedures and devices, the food, and the country estate. My fave book of 2018 so far. Truly satisfying and we'll written. Can't wait for the next one.

THE BEST BOOK OF THE SERIES (SO FAR).

For once, I have found a magical little historical romance that, while connected to the aristocracy, is actually about two common people living their own hard-working, common-man lives. How unique!

Ethan and Garrett (female) make for a deserving pair of companions. He's a life-long cop with a pure heart who's been pulled into working with the wrong side for the greater good, willing to sacrifice himself if necessary. She's a doctor, the first and only of her sex to achieve such a feat, an fighting against the odds to keep her name in good standing as she works to provide tireless care to those in need of her services, sacrificing her own life and happiness in exchange.

Both characters give so much of themselves to and for other people. Watching as they find something for themselves and go the distance to hold on to it (her more than him) was simply beautiful. At every turn, Garrett is breaking boundaries and upsetting stereotypes to get what she wants and it leaves a strong sense of achievement with the reader. We're left cheering and crying for the happiness of their two giving, dedicated individuals who ask for so little to get the one thing that matters to them: each other, for ever.

If you have any doubts as to the value and importance of love, read this book. It will remind to be believe and work for it.

Hello Stranger is the 4th in The Ravenels series but is also a stand alone. This is a beautifully written story about the strength of overcoming the odds and preconceptions of social standards. Garrett is the first female doctor in England and is determined to succeed. She is strong willed, stubborn and self reliant. Ethan is the natural child of a peer, a former detective from Scotland Yard and now a spy trying to expose a criminal racket in government. Ethan has been attracted to Garrett since the first time he met her and now she is attracted to him when danger surrounds him. This is a great story filled with danger, intrigue, laughs, love and coming to terms with the past. Lisa Kleypas is an amazing author who writes stories that grab you by the heart and won't let go. Loved it.

Hello Stranger is another solid Lisa Kelypas book. I love her books because she rarely manufactures drama between the leads. There are not silly misunderstandings, ridiculous scheming stepmothers and the like. In this book the drama is related to political intrigue and I thought it worked well. The romance is super sweet and Ethan has such a romantic soul. It was nice to get an update on West and have him factor in more. As always the writing and research is top notch. Looking forward to the next installment.

This book was like a tasty treat! I was hooked in Chapter 1. Once again, Lisa Kleypas has demonstrated what it is to write a good story that makes you smile, laugh, cry (yes, actual tears!) swoon, and bite a fingernail or two while the plot thickens. You want funny dialogue? Check! You want sweet romance that makes your heart sing? Two Checks! You want scorching tenderness that makes your toes curl? Three Checks! I particularly enjoyed the audio version as the narrator excellently portrayed Ethan and Garrett's accents. Have to say, I was charmed by Ethan from the beginning - and he is definitely on my list of Forever Book Boyfriends. Garrett was also a fun character and experiencing the contrast between her strengths and doubts that arose during an emergency - it was riveting. West played a big part in this book (we've seen him in some of the other books in the series too) and I can't wait for his story!! Thanks again. A great book to add to my collection.

This book gives us the story of two tertiary characters we have met and interacted with in the previous three books, Dr. Garret Gibson and Ethan Ransome.

Dr. Gibson is based on the only woman of her time, being the first allowed to practice medicine in England. She studied in France and was able to practice in the UK because of a loophole in the law that was later "fixed" because of her. Her circumstance is unique. She is a lone woman in a mans world, with men who would rather she was not there. People are distrustful of her skill and knowledge. She pushes aside her more feminine qualities to complete with men.

Ransome is a dashing and handsome detective who is also a by-blow of a nobleman, which has been previously hinted at in the other books. He is a common man who rose through the ranks on his intellect and ability. Although he can very obviously be deadly, he is adamant about no women ever being harmed by men.

Gibson and Ransome had an altercation in Marrying Winterborne which comes up here, where Gibson pretty handily fought off attackers, much to his dismay. She gets attacked again at the top of this book, Ransome comes to her aid, then tells her although she was been taught to fight well, she doesn't know jack about street fighting, but hey, he can teach her. Thus the attraction and intrigue begins.

Ransome's superiors are shit heads intent on harming innocent people for the greater good, to fan the flames of anti-Irish sentiment and home rule that was going on at this time.

I enjoyed this book very much. Lisa Kleypas gives each of her characters very distinct voices. I never feel like I'm reading stock character in a story that is just like any other. Every one has their own cadence and style. It was great to have West back in the picture as a man to annoy but befriend and aid to the two main characters.

There is a brief passage that is culturally insensitive to persons of color. Honestly I didn't bump on it initially when I read it. That is a learning moment for me. I knew of a review that was going around about the book. A review the author has responded to publicly. If she chooses to remove the passage entirely, it would not impact the story. But maybe she will rewrite it to give agency to the person who does not even rate a name in the passage. I think white people owe it to persons of color to be looking for and understanding how our own world view allows us to miss these moments, and call them out. As I stated, I did not on first read. I did read the other review and all of the comments on it, and realized my blindness to the greater issue in that passage. I still find the overall story is one that I enjoyed and gave my stars accordingly. But, I wanted to recognize that passage and acknowledge the other reviews correct commentary on it specifically.

Garrett has had me intrigued since she first appeared in this series. If you've read the previous books, you probably sensed the chemistry between Garrett and Ransom. You don't have to read the previous books to enjoy this one, but I definitely recommend them. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and I'm looking forward to the next one. Rumor has it the next book is West's! Finally! *wink*

The story plot was great! Lots of assassination plots against government officials,an unknown illegitimate Ravenel son, who is Ethan Ransom, our hero and our heroine is the first female British doctor, Garrett Gibson. I personally like our heroine better than the hero die to her determined and charismatic personality and West, who is just a secondary character, but lightens the story. I wasn't a 5 star die to the fact that Devil in Spring is still my favorite, but that was until I read the excerpt of Devil's Daughter, in which West Ravenel is the main character and Phoebe, Sebastian and Evangeline's daughter. I know this one is promising due to West's sense of humor.

I enjoyed reading this historical romance complete with mayhem, spy drama and love. This story has unforgettable characters, sparkling and witty dialogue, was well written, and has a very happy and satisfying HEA.

The first woman doctor and a spy in Victorian England made for an intriguing read. The story focussed on Garrett and her choices. This is great but at times it was a little too much it made her look insecure instead of strong. I was a little surprised by the bitter attitude Ethan had toward the Ravenels because in the previous books he showed kindness and even protectiveness to Helen and Pandora.

I freaking loved it! Wooooohooooooo! So much kudos...kudos to the first female doc in Britain...kudos to Winterborne for hiring her and kudos to Ethan for falling in love with her and having her back! All the medical references had me swooning, with stars in my eyes. Yesssss!!! This was a total badass read that was admiring and so strong that I couldn't help but fall in love with Garrett and Ethan...just beautiful and awe-inspiring. 4.5 stars
AND...a sneak peek as to West and Phoebe's story another Evie and Vincent kid!!!! So freaking fantabulous!!!! I cannot wait!!!

Hello Stranger is the fourth book in The Ravenels series by Lisa Kleypas and this time the couple is Dr. Garrett Gibson and Ethan Ransom. Garrett is the only certified female physician in England and she works hard to prove herself in a world that still prefers male physicians. Ethan is a detective trying to find out who the traitors are in the government. And though Garrett and Ethan try to stay away from each other they can't deny their feelings for each other.

I liked Hello Stranger. Ever since reading about Garrett Gibson and Ethan Ransom in Marrying Winterborne I was interested in their characters and learning more about them. I liked Garrett and Ethan as a couple. I liked reading their scenes together. It was also nice to see the other Ravenels especially West who made a bigger appearance in this book.

But while I did like Hello Stranger I didn't love it like I was expecting to. Maybe I just had too high of expectations especially after reading Devil in Spring which is my favorite Ravenel book in the series so far. I just found myself not interested in the traitors plot at all and was bored whenever I read about it. And Ethan being revealed as a Ravenel and the half brother to the Ravenels wasn't all that big of a surprise to me after reading the previous book. But what I found a bit surprising was his somewhat cold attitude toward the Ravenels. I mean I can understand he didn't want to betray his parents by being friendly with them but after his kindness to Helen and Pandora in the previous books I was a little surprised by it.

I did like Hello Stranger. I liked Garrett and Ethan and their scenes together. Also West and the other characters who make a appearance but the traitors plot wasn't interesting and was boring to me and that ruined the book for me quite a bit.

I give Hello Stranger three stars.

The first book I ever bought from the Scholastic Book Club in 4th grade was the story of Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman doctor in the United States. So I loved seeing Lisa Kleypas’s tribute to the first female doctor in Great Britain. Garrett was professional and caring and I loved her love story. Ethan’s admiration of her as well as his general heroism in taking on corruption and conspiracies made him an excellent hero. I’d been looking forward to their story and I wasn’t disappointed. Looking forward to more of the Ravensls.

When two unusual characters meet, sparks fly. Dr. Garrett Gibson is the first female physician practicing in London. Her practice includes some unsavory areas of London, where on several occasions she finds herself in perilous circumstances. Fortunately for her, she finds she has a protector watching over her in the shadows. Ethan Ransom was an up and coming detective in Scotland Yard until he was recruited by a high official in the Home Office. These two become involved, and an enjoyable tale follows.

Boring stick figures for H & h. Got one third through book and gave up. Returned because I like to finish what I start, but it was a chore.
Writing was spritely, but almost seemed written by two different people. Sometimes stringing out these series gets to be a chore both for writer and reader. Don't think I will worry about the next one.

If you have been wanting to read a book by Lisa Kleypas, but don't know where to start, I would recommend this book. It's arguably one of the most stand-alone in her series, but still introduced you to some of the characters that have come before and that we will meet again so you will want to go back and read their stories as well. This is an excellent example of her work with passionate characters that you want to spend more time with, interesting conflicts that drive the story, and accurate research to enhance the experience.

I read then listened to Hello Stranger in audio with overdrive . I was entertained by this book . Found Garret and Ethan interesting and engaging characters, their relationship sweet, hot and plausible.
I just didn't love As I love Marrying Winterborne... that's Helen and Rhys story ; in my opinion, it's the best of the Ravenels series so far. Nevertheless, this was another fun, well research , page turning book by Ms. Kleypas.

Looking forward reading West Ravenel story .

This is certainly the best book in the series, by far. After reading historical for 45 years, I am tired of books that are all romance, parties, driving in the park, country house parties, and on and on.
I enjoy something that gives the H/h something to do besides gaze into each other eyes while they fall into love/lust instantly.
This book gave me "something else". I think we got enough of a plot to keep the story moving along.
Good job LK!

“I don’t have a romantic bone in my body,” said Dr. Garrett Gibson. But she does, oh, she does! Not as romantic as the dashing Ethan Ransom but just enough.

This mismatched pair quickly became one of my favourites, with their strong traits and unconventional professions. The suspense added lots of fun to the story and my favourite Ravenel, West, appeared frequently throughout. So excited that the next book is his story!

I know several people who've been following this series and were perplexed by the pairing of Dr. Garrett with Ethan. Whatever your feelings about who you thought Garrett would end up with, it's impossible to deny that Ethan is a hero well deserving of the phenomenal woman and doctor she continues to prove herself to be. Truly, no one does it like Lisa Kleypas. This is a great read and I can't wait for the next installment in the series.

I have yet to read a Lisa Kleypas book that i did not love! Hello Stranger has the signature of Ms. Kleypas' strong heroine lead. This time a doctor. Garrett is beautiful, smart and a tough cookie. Ethan is the perfect hero for her because her intelligence AND her beauty are what captures him. There's intrigue, romance, humour and great sex. Everything that, to me, makes a great romance novel! Can't wait for the next book!

I must admit that at first I wasn't really looking forward to the novel but once I started reading, I couldn't put the book down. Garrett and Ethan story is engaging from beginning to end. They are both admirable, and I completely loved how open they were with their feelings for each other. There is no unnecessary misunderstanding in this book unlike many romance novels who use this conflict to prolongue the story. I loved how understanding and caring they were with each other, how they accepted each other without wanting to change them. The plot was interesting and I couldn't wait to see how it was going to end. This book along with Devil in Spring are my favorites in the Ravanel serie. I am truly looking forward to West' story in Devil's Daughter, he is one of my favorite characters in the serie. Finally it's his turn!

Author Lisa Kleypas has crafted a story that’s compelling, endearing, and engrossing. The characters are lively and relatable. This is the first book I have read by Lisa Kleypas and I look forward to catching up with the other books in the series. I can’t wait to learn more about the characters. Even though this book is a part of a series – it can be read at a stand-alone.

I loved Garrett, the first female to graduate from the Sorbonne in Medicine and the first female physician in England. She was facinating, and the medical procedures were well researched. Ethan, the former policeman now secret agent was the perfect foil for Garrett. All of the Ravenels books have been great, but this was my absolute favorite.

Hello Stranger is the 4th installment of The Ravenels series, and can most certainly be read as a standalone. While I have read the majority of Lisa Kleypas's backlist, I had not read any of this series, and I had absolutely no difficulty falling into the story. I had no confusion reading this as a standalone, and look forward to going back to book 1 and working my way through the series.

Hello Stranger starts off with a thrilling scene, drawing the reader into the story from word-one in an innovated way. Our hero and heroine have had previous encounters. However, since this was the first I've read, I don't feel short-changed with how Kleypas released the previous information about their encounters without doing an info-dump.

Garrett Gibson is the first female doctor in England, in a time when women were not seen in the same light as men. She was logical, non-emotional, no-nonsense, but written in a manner that does not make her seem cold. I immediately identified with Garrett, which had me emotionally invested in the character and the journey. I appreciated that Hello Stranger didn't concentrate on balls and trapping a man in the marriage mart, befitting the characterization.

Ethan Ransom is an interesting character, with a mysterious backstory. He's as practical and efficient as the doctor but has a red-blooded, passionate streak. Trained to do the jobs in which most would not succeed, Ransom tries and fails to disconnect from his humanity.

Garrett and Ransom are drawn together, bringing out portions of human nature they both suppress due to their professions. Their romance felt real, with a slow-build, high tension, and sizzling passion unfolding organically throughout the story.

They're tested, both as a couple, but most certainly by profession, in a manner that allows the reader to see Garrett's medical knowledge. The reader can see that Garrett is not a damsel in distress throughout the majority of the book- not only will she protect herself, she is driven to care for others. The depth in which the author goes to show the medical limitations of the time, some readers may be drawn to skim this portion- however, I was intrigued by both the medical angle, as well as how women in Garrett's profession were treated.

There is a small side cast of characters, which I'm sure are past narrators. However, the reader gets to meet West, who most certainly will be the hero of the next installment. I enjoyed him immensely, and all the foreshadowing made me hungry from West's book.

My favorite part of the entire novel was the instant familial connection Ransom and West shared. Their interplay was amusing and heartwarming. It was as if West brought out another side to Ransom- a sarcastic and witty side that brought levity to an otherwise darker novel, and this transferred over into how they both interacted with Garrett.

Here are two quotes from the beginning of the novel that had me thoroughly entertained, and will also give a glimpse into Garrett's character.

You've been all work and no play for much too long. And then one night a mysterious and handsome man appears out of the shadows, fending off attackers on your behalf-"

"That part was annoying," Garrett interrupted. "I was doing quite well at being my own hero until he jumped in."

Helen's lips curved. "Still... it must have been a little flattering."

___

"This man is a patient," Garrett told the cookmaid, removing the posy of violets from the buttonhole of her walking jacket before handing the garment to her. "I've brought him here for a consultation- please see that we're not disturbed."

"Consultation for what?" the maid asked slyly, her gaze traveling from Ethan's head to his toes, and back up again. "'E don't look all that peaked to me."

Garrett's brows lowered. "You know better than to comment on a patient's appearance."

Leaning toward her, the cookmaid said in a stage whisper, "I meant to say I 'opes you can do something for this poor, sickly wreck of a man."

A lovely book, and a worthy addition to Kleypas's Ravenels series. I liked Ethan Ransom as he made appearances in the previous Ravenel books, and hoped that Kleypas would allow him to star in his own book. Yes! Can't wait for the next incarnation of the Ravenels!

I started reading this book before I realized that there were 3 before it. Not to worry, because the heroine and the hero keep your attention from the very beginning. Oh my gosh, this was simply a marvelous book. First off, this book made me appreciate the advancement in medicine. Some of the things in this book seem kind of archaic, but they were cutting edge for the time. So, seeing how some of those things were performed backed them made me grateful for how they have progress since then. Now about Hello Stranger. Yes, you could read this book without the previous books, and be somewhat fine. However, there are some things that happen in previous stories that help you understand this particular story. What happen in Devil in Spring kind of leads up to what happens in Hello Stranger. I would recommend reading the books in order.

So, the medical stuff and the political unrest is a big part in this story, but we also have a love brewing here. We have level-headed Garrett Gibson. Poor girl. She's the only female doctor in all of England, so she has to prove that she's the best. However, some tall dark stranger strolls into her life, because honestly she does need saving from herself, here and there. She can be pretty stubborn. Now Ethan Ransom can be pretty stubborn too, but he's always looking out for Garrett. Plus, he feels that she could be a weakness to him, so the best solution would be cut himself off of her. Because that always works in the long run. Yet these two work better when together. Both independent, but somehow they know how not to stifle one another.

I found Hello Stranger pretty fascinating read. I mean with all the medicine Garrett is doing, Ethan trying to save England. I like how Lisa made Ethan come realize he doesn't have to be like his parents, the ones who raised him, and the one that helped sired him. I wonder if there will be more Ravenel children popping up in this series or if the ones we have met are it. I can't wait to read West story. He sounds like he's going to be a hoot. Overall, Hello Stranger was a pretty good read.

Wow, what a jumble! Garrett and Ethan; what can I say? The book was not easy to read/follow. Most of us finally figure out where we fit in this life. I'm glad they both did. The world is an evil place for Ethan and for Garrett, a healing place. They were able to defeat the villains and bring justice to their world, with the help of his family.
Due to Garrett's profession, there was a lot of medical information, not needed by me, to enjoy the book.
I did not enjoy reading this book! I was very disappointed

I adored Garrett and Ethan.

Garrett is the dedicated doctor who spends all her time helping others and hardly takes the time to rest.

Ethan was hired to protect her and he does it from afar, until one night changes everything.

I liked Garrett as a character. She was strong, intelligent, capable bu also knew when to ask for help.

When Ethan pointed out she can defend herself but needs to hone her skills, she accepts his offer to further her education.

I loved seeing them together. Both being certain they have no future together and of course, being proven wrong.

I liked the intrigue and Ethan's connection to past characters in the series.

Garrett was such an improvement from Pandora, who talked about women's rights but did little for the common good.

Garrett actually acted and tried making the world a better place, she educated women and helped them heal.

Some readers were offended by the way the author portrayed a woman from Ethan's past.

She was a nameless Asian woman who taught him the pleasures of the flesh.

Please grow up. Unfortunately, you cannot change history.

You are reading an historical book set in a time that women had few rights, even less if at all at the places Ethan traveled to.

He using a woman for his pleasure is something that happened to men in the past. Just like fictional heroes and real male's kept mistresses. Stop looking for trigger warnings or for a perfect book.

The country the book takes place in isnt and never was perfect. Her people are not the example of honor and virtue.

Stop trying to change the past to suit your agenda. Men used women and vise versa.

Men overseas did questionable things. They didnt second guess themselves.

Your sensibilities of today have no place in historical fiction.

Some things are fiction, some take inspiration from reality. Reality is sometimes ugly and unpleasant.

Racism exists and existed in the past. Trying to make a book PC will only harm us.

This is the deeply romantic Lisa Kleypas storytelling that I fell in love with years ago. From beginning to end, it's my favorite book so far in The Ravenels series.

I wasn't sure what to expect of Garrett. In previous books we're shown a no-nonsense doctor who hasn't much of a life outside of her career but she really evolves in this book. I enjoyed watching her transition as she begins to embrace her emotional side without sacrificing any of the strength in her straight-forward, scientific, medical attributes. I liked her and was firmly in her corner, cheering her on. And Ethan. ::sigh:: What can I say? Ethan Ransom is one of my all-time favorite Kleypas heroes. I really fell for this guy. A self-made man, lethal government agent, with the soul of a poet, a well-hidden Irish accent that weakens the knees, a heart that beats solely for one unconventional woman, and knowledge of 120 pleasure positions? Yes, please!

For fans of the series, West Ravenel has a fair amount of page time in this book and it's only upped my anticipation for his story! I hope we'll be seeing more of Ethan and Garrett in future books as well. I haven't had nearly enough of them!

Warning! Over twenty four hours after reading, I'm still suffering from extreme book hangover. Formerly a detective, and now an agent for the crown, Ethan Ransom has been smitten with Dr. Garrett Gibson since he first saw her. Though he doesn't hold out any hope of ever having a relationship with her, he still follows her as she makes her way through the dangerous parts of town with the intention of protecting her, if needed. Garrett, who is the only female doctor in England, is at first annoyed upon discovering Ethan trailing her. When Ethan convinces her that she needs to learn how to protect herself, she is intrigued. It doesn't take very long until the doctor who has been all-work-and-no-play becomes just as smitten with Ethan. When Garrett decides she wants Ethan for her lover, he tries, but he's powerless to resist her.

Right from the start, I felt this couple to be perfect for each other. Garrett has had to fight many battles just because she's a woman in a man's profession. She's had to be better, smarter, and tougher, and in doing that, she put aside all thoughts of romance. Ethan has been trained to be an elite agent, controlling his thoughts, his actions, and his body. But together, they both show a softness toward the other, sharing humor, passion, and themselves. I adore a book where I am in love with both lead characters, and that is definitely the case here. I love Ethan's way of speaking to Garrett - it's almost poetic, yet doesn't seem contrived or phony, just truly heartfelt: "The first moment I saw you, I knew you were my share of the world. I've always loved you. If I could choose my fate, I'd never be parted from you." Whew!

HELLO STRANGER has some intrigue and some history, but nothing overshadows the romance, and that's something very important to me. If you've followed the previous books in THE RAVENELS series, West plays a prominent secondary role, and adds some smileworthy moments. Everything about HELLO STRANGER worked for me, and I've added it to my favorites list. The characters are amazingly strong, yet vulnerable to each other, and they have a love and passion that's extraordinary. "I want a life with you." Years with him. A fireside of children with him. "My life is yours," he said huskily. "You own every minute I have left. You know that..don't you? .." The writing is beautiful, compelling, and heartfelt - if that's the kind of book you love to read, (as I do) I recommend moving HELLO STRANGER to the top of your reading list.

A Top Pick as reviewed at rosesareblue dot net. I received a complimentary copy of this book.

Kleypas used to be an automatic buy; no longer. I had to force myself to finish reading Hello Stranger. Unhappilly this latest book in the Ravenel series accelerates Kleypas' downswing into the dull and insipid. Kleypas' books used to be rich in character and plot. There's none here. Hero Ethan Ransom and heroine Dr. Garrett Gibson are the same madly in love pair from start to finish--they have no real conflict and they never develop and grow. The plot is equally thin: a conspiracy run by over the top villains (all that's missing is twirling mustaches). This is a sad book given Kleypas' clear talent and the material she had to work with; the good doctor is inspired by the first female physician in Britain and the plot by a Home Department scandal. I fear that her next book, Devil's Daughter, will be just as shallow: the bonus excerpt had the heroine Phoebe Challon tingling at first sight of the Hero West Ravenel. What's happened to Lisa Kleypas?

Why was I born in this current era? Oh, what a mess I would have been if I were born in 1876. I would have defied my time along with Dr. Garrett Gibson, the only female physician in England. Not wanting anything to do with the traditional things a lady was supposed to do. Wanting to be who she wanted to be. To love who she wanted to love. And to give herself to the man she felt deserved her without benefit of marriage or an arrangement. And he who wants her more than life itself denying himself for surely harm would come to her being in his acquaintance. But you know the old saying, opposites attract, and hearts will not be denied. Seduction is her game and she mean to have her man.

Kleypas never disappoints--always heros you'd like to have for your very own, and heroines who you wouldn't mind being. Garret Gibson, M.D.,, the first female doctor to be licensed in England, appeared in a prior novel. I'm so glad she got her own story because she certainly deserved it. Not only is she a doctor, but she's trained in the martial arts. What's not to love! Not only is this a wonderful love story, but there is esponage and intregue as well. And, she paints a fuller picture of West Ravenel, who will be the hero in her next book. I can't wait!

I turned around Lisa Kleypas work for a while, then this book showed in my searching thread on the store, and the blurb just caught me.
I do adored this book with two unusual characters, and it was my first read which was set so late during the Victorian era.
I know this book is the fourth in a series but it did not bothered me, nor the appearance of characters from previous books.
I loved both main characters, each one so strong in its own way, they were like superheroes.
Garrett, she went against nearly everyone but she became who she was meant to be, nothing dithered her, she takes matter in hands and refuse to bend.

“Kiss me,” she commanded, “or I’ll break your nose.”

But by reaching her goal, she also drew a lonely life for herself, until her different encounters with Ethan Ransom. He is her knight in not-so-shining armor.

“You had no choice,” she eventually said. “I summoned you.” Her cheek curved against his shoulder as she added, “My genie of the whistle.” “I don’t grant wishes,” he said. “A second-rate genie. I should have known I’d get one of those.”

Ethan’s love for Garrett was evident from the very beginning of the book, but himself was a mystery slowly unraveled. He is a creature with multiple facets, each one different from the other. Even with his not easy childhood, kindness is rooted in him, he will never let someone blackening his soul, he never took the easy way, and he is so smart he was able to rise himself from the rank faster than anyone.

They are good together, he is the poet in her so clinical life, she is his light in his darkness.

“...there were a few things about Ethan Ransom that Garrett was absolutely certain of. She knew he accepted her flaws as readily as she did his: they could do that for each other when they couldn’t do it for themselves. And she knew he loved her without condition. They had each arrived at a crossroads in life, and this was their chance to go in some new direction together, if they were brave enough to take it.”

It was at first a game of cat and mouse but the mouse was not Garrett. Ethan was dead set he was not for Garrett, he is certain his intrusion in her life would only bring havoc in hers. He kept coming back when she needs him but is sure it is wrong. But she refuses to let him decide for them both.

“A queen, you are,” he said softly. “I could travel the world the rest of my life, and not find another woman with half your ways.”

Then everything went wild, and was proof they were to be together.
I read some complaints about this tittle, I’m not acquainted with the author’s work, but the plot, characters and actions were perfectly narrated, it was a lovely read with two strong entities, nice side characters, humour and suspense.

I’m a verified customer on the store.fr
