Any collection of Connelly books is worth a read- emotional with clever plots, believable stories about the inside workings of poltically sensitive police/detective precincts. Bosch is clever, tough, independently minded but flexible as only an experienced investigator can be who does not care about what is politically correct. So often is seems as if Bosch has backed himself into a corner, only to finagle his way out, kinda legally!

Last year I very reluctantly wrote a rather negative review of Michael Connelly's 9 Dragons, which I don't think is even close to his earlier Harry Bosch books. If you want to read him at his best, read these (also Angel's Flight, another favorite), all of which I own in hardback. This is the real old-fashioned "hard boiled" detective stuff, set in Los Angeles, about a tough cop who rubs nearly everyone the wrong way but is one of the good guys. Connelly really "gets" LA and after reading him, the reader gets it, too.

Det. Harry Bosch has solved 3 different types of cases in this book. He does it the way only our man Bosch can: quickly, efficiently, forcefully, and making as many enemies inside the force as he does outside it.

I started with Harry in Black Echo and plan on working my way through the whole tortured series. Very powerful and believable stories that I can't easily put down. I love the forensic science that unfolds in the stories and the deeply flawed people Harry encounters .

Connelly doesn't disappoint. Even in 2014, the early Harry Bosch novels still deliver a thrill, and remind us of an era when LA was seething with discontent. This three-book "boxed set" is a great series, with a strong story arc. Both Harry's professional and personal lives are explored in these novels, and with the exception of only a few moments when the author indulges in some high-falutin' preaching about righteousness, the message of these novels is clearly on the side of justice and truth. Well done.

The Bosch books are well written, with intriguing plots and fascinating characters. Every page makes you feel like you're watching a brilliant detective -- every part of the books feel real. I can't stop reading them.

I am hooked on the Harry Bosch stories but haven't been reading in order. It was good to go back and and fill in some of the blanks and understand some of the references in later books. I have read a few of the authors other books and didn't really like them but haven't found a Harry Boschh book yet that I didn't love. Check out the the store series too.

I read all the Spillanes, the Wolfes, Christies, etc when I was a much younger man and while they were an enjoyable read those stories can't hold a candle to these Bosch stories by Connelly. Always difficult to put down.

Great to have a collection of stories from a master writer who knows how to take readers into mystery and suspense. If you need a good read that will be a page turner you only have to look for a book by Michael Connelly.

Great way to pick up the 1st 3 books in a single hardback. Connelly is one of the finest writers in the detective genre and Harry Bosch is a very enjoyable hero. I moved into this field after working thru most of the spy/action/tech/thriller series including Clancy, Brown, Brown, Bond, Coyle, Mills, Silva, Isles, Hagberg, LeCarre, Littel, Ludlum, Deighton, Griffen..... and I did so with a lot of trepidation as to whether they would really be the diverting all-nighters I had come to enjoy so much. What a pleasure to find Connelly and Harry Bosch! Enjoy!

Now available for the first time in a single volume edition, "The Harry Bosch Novels" brings together the first three mysteries by Michael Connelly, one of the finest writers in the detective genre. If you haven't yet read this terrific series, this book presents the perfect place to begin.
These three stories can easily be read one-by-one, or all three in a row. Such is Connelly's skill that readers are unlikely to tire soon of the unfolding story of Detective Harry Bosch. This omnibus volume is a great way to start this series and will help prepare readers for the release of the 7th Bosch novel (coming in early 2002), which promises to be one of the best yet.
If you're not reading Michael Connelly, you're missing one of the best authors fiction has to offer. What are you waiting for?

The sixth in the Harry Bosch series continues Connelly's masterful plotting, superb story-telling, and intricate use of theme and motif (one of the most impressive elements in Connelly's arsenal). I am anxious to move on to the next one!

Read seven Bosch novels so far. Expected a fair amount of repetitive phrasing or scene fragments. I've not noticed one. Connelly is probably one of the best cop mystery writers ever, period. I'm also impressed with the plots and how they always turn out to be pretty surprising when it comes to "whodunit".

The Harry Bosch Novels: The Black Echo, The Black Ice, The Concrete Blonde
Three great Harry Bosch novels to hold your interest from the first page to the last. Harry must deal with memories of Viet Nam and a lost war-time friend, a missing cop that may be working on the wrong side, the Mexican drug cartel, and a serial killer named the Dollmaker with a strange signature that he leaves behind.

The Last Coyote was slow. Not enough action and too much inner searching and sole searching. The other two moved right along. They seem to be sequential. Angel's Flight was especially good with Harry bringing down the big guys.

[ASIN:0316614564 The Harry Bosch Novels Volume 2: The Last Coyote, Trunk Music, Angels Flight]]
In this book you get three good Bosch novels in one book. These novels take Harry to solve cases in Hollywood, Las Vegas, and his own office building. He gets suspended, goes up against the Mafia, and has to investigate his own cohorts. Harry Bosch makes a lot of enemies on the way to solving the difficult crimes.

Connelly develops a great main character, Harry Bosch, around whom these mysteries all revolve. Harry is a Vietnam Vet who is an "underdog" detective in the Hollywood division due to his preference to work cases alone, leaving his bosses to believe that he's not really to be trusted. I was pleasantly surprised that each book in succession held my attention very well, unlike other books with characters or plotlines repeated in successive novels that become boring after the second book. These stories are for anyone who likes crime and cop suspense mysteries.

This is not a specific review, but I'd like to merely point out that one of the many admirable qualities of Michael Connelly's writing is that he at least devises sensible names for his characters. One can easily imagine someone named Jerry Edgar or Norman Church or Rachel Walling or Sheehan or Rider, et al.

The hack writers, on the other hand, always burden the imagination with such painful names as . . . "Star ballerina turned private investigator Persephone Pudendum drew her poison-tipped hat pin and thrust it deeply into the evil Dr. Wolfsnout Smorgasbord . . . "

Michael Connelly always rates five stars in my book. He is on my top ten list of favorite authors. Any time you get a book by Connelly, you can count on an excellent read. I just love Harry and Terry and the Lincoln Lawyer---you will too!

This is the second time through this series for me. I thoroughly enjoy them. Good story line and interesting characters that flow with the series. You get to know the people and enjoy meeting them again with each book. Not too much gore; mostly brain work.

If you like police procedurals like the ones by Ian Rankin, Peter Robinson or Henning Mankell you will love Michael Connelly!
There's the added benefit that the crimes take place in Los Angeles, which, for Angelenos like myself gives us an extra connection to the books.

The three stories in this collection cover the major background for many of the later Harry Bosch novels. Like many popular modern authors, Connelly's writing improves over the course of the series. The plot of all three novels included enough twists to keep the reader guessing until the end. Bosch is a complicated character with both strengths and flaws that allow the reader understand his personal and professional struggles. Readers who enjoy these three stories will find most of the sequel novels equally enjoyable.

After reading several of the Mickey Haller/Lincoln Lawyer books, I wanted to know the back story on Harry Bosch. This trio of books was a great read and the stories are riveting. I will be looking for the next stories in the sequence. I enjoyed how the characters are developed and how the storyline isn't predictable. Many authors develop a plan or formula where it is fairly easy to anticipate how the story unfolds. Michael Connelly is a fantastic storyteller and I would totally recommend his books.

I've been reading Harry Bosch from day one and to this day he is one of my favorite authors (#2 on a list of 10). Here and there I had loaned a lot of my books to others, and for one reason or another didn't get most of them back. Seeing this made me want to read Michael Connelly all over again so I'm buying them again (and nobody borrows them this time!). I promise you will love reading Harry Bosch!

This was very well written, the chapters were nuanced and interesting. It gave a detailed account of the work and lives of Bosch and his fellow officers, which brought the city to life. There was a lot of violence and disturbing descriptions of LA's sex trade, which I found hard to read.

Through twists and turns you just have to keep reading. His writing is exceptional. Justice is sometimes a gray area. Just keep reading his novels and you will be truly fascinated with Mtchael Connelly.

It's tough, as a reformed smoker, to stand this close to Harry Bosch. The characters are so vivid, and Harry's torment is so palpable as he wades through pack after pack of cigarettes, that I frequently would stop reading to separate myself from the desire to light up. Don't read these if you're trying to quit, or struggling with not smoking again. Very few authors can draw me in so deeply that I would consider risking my own health...

Great series by Michael Connelly, the "Lincoln Lawyer" author. If you thought you knew Bosch from the lawyer series, you don't; go to this one and start from the beginning. You'll be hooked, as was I.

Connelly writes some of the best police procedurals if one also likes the hard boiled detective genre. The Harry Bosch novels move well, are genuinely moving at times, and contain very strong suspense elements. At the same time, the novels ring with the authenticity that procedurals require.

I really enjoy Michael Connelly. These three books have some nice twists and are very good reads. Harry is a great character and almost makes me like cops (at least Harry) because of his compassion and honesty and desire to serve and protect.

However, the drawback for me on these books is the language. Seriously!!! How many times do we really need to use the F Bomb! It's overkill and degrading to Connelly and the series. I mean really, pick a few of the other swear words occasionally. Most people I know don't talk like that and it demonstrates lack of education and lack of creativity.

HArry Bosch is maybe the best series character in recent years. Connelly is a gifted writer who creates the most vivid portrait of LA in crime fiction outside of James Ellroy, and Connelly's work is a lot more mass-market friendly than Ellroy's, I think. Dark and powerful, yes, but not overly depressing like some of Ellroy's writing. Connelly might not be able to match Ellroy's characters, but his plots are multi-layered and complex and his dialogue sharp and real. I recommend this book to any mystery fan, although I prefer to read the single volumes just from a comfort standpoint. Wonderful writing.

In this book, LAPD homicide cop Harry Bosch investigates the seemingly linked deaths of a police officer and drug runners who traffic in "black ice", a new potent street drug. Harry's investigations take him from L.A. to Mexico and involve attempts on his life and dangerous shoot-outs. Good mystery/thriller.

Having read some of the later Bosch books, I enjoyed reading about the younger version of Bosch. Connelly's writing is clear and fluid. He goes deep into Bosch's character while Bosch himself cannot be so self-analytical. Plot runs along well, although I think it thins out at the end, denying us a true suspenseful build-up to its resolution. Still, it's worth a read.

I really like the Harry Bosch character. I've read most of the series and have not been disappointed even once. This collection of three Bosch tales concludes with the best one I've read so far. The Concrete Blond was awesome.

If you like mysteries with strong characters and unexpected twists & turns these three will not let you down. There is language that is offensive, so if that bothers you then skip these. If not then enjoy the gripping ride.

The Harry Bosch Novels (both volumes 1 & 2) introduced me to Harry Bosch and Michael Connelly. These are great police procedural stories as well as very well done mysteries. I could do with a little less of Harry's attitude, but it plays well, too. Except that no hierarchy would put up with the extremes of the attitude. The six novels included are very much worth the money and are excellent reading. I am in the process of ordering the rest of the Harry Bosch series from the store.

Several weeks ago, I picked up a Harry Bosch novel in a local book store. Since then I have ordered 12 other of the series from the store. I only have three left to read. Each novel stands alone, but if you read the series in order, it's a lot more fun. Great detectuve stories by a very readable author.

Great introduction to this writer's work. Well paced plots with lots of tension and believable characters, without too much navel-gazing. Each title in this 3 novel set is what a thriller novel should be.

For all of you that are upset about the ridiculous pricing on an e-Book that costs nothing for the store to download, try getting a Nook. You can check out books for free from many libraries. The other prices are competitive. I'm currently on my fifth Harry Bosch novel in the series, and I checked all of them out for free at Seattle Public Library. You get 21 days to read it, and then it disappears. If you don't live here, check your local library. Your reader has to be able to interface with Adobe Digital Editions. Right now the Sony and Nook are the only ones that work, as far as I know. The library web sites are accessible from any internet connection, so I could download books for free from Europe. I'm totally getting into Harry Bosch, and it isn't costing me anything.

I would love to add this volume to my Kindle collection, but when the library is free and the actual book is much cheaper, that isn't going to happen. Notice - the library is free! I love the read aloud capability of my Kindle - I can listen while I go to work and I don't have to have a bunch of CD's floating around and I don't have to buy an audible book, but even with that temptation, I'm not pushing the button to buy this on Kindle.

Michael Connelly and his books - YES!

Publishers setting prices way too high - NO!

I haven't purchased nearly as many books for my Kindle as I would if they were all text enabled and reasonably priced. Why would I spend extra money to get something that is free at the library or comes in a discounted form from the store or at Barnes and Noble? Used bookstores are also an option.

Someone with an in to the publishers' ears needs to straighten them out - they are cutting their own throats rather than increasing their sales. You would think volume would make a difference over making a killing on a single book.

Too bad, I love my Kindle, but not this book at this price.

I know that this review is not about the book itself but I do want to voice my opinion too. Why would I want to buy the Kindle version when you can get the hardcover or paperbacks for much less? I also noticed that if you buy vol. 2 & 3 together you get a better deal. WHY CAN'T KINDLE OFFER THIS TOO? If you buy one or more books of the same author for Kindle offer a discount just like you do for the books. I agree...I won't buy this until the price goes down.

Surely, the publisher is joking. Why would books that are far from new releases be more costly in electronic format than in hardcover. There are no shipping costs, no printing costs, certainly no new marketing costs. This is simply a rip off for Kindle customers--some of the most serious and prolific readers around. Part of the reason for me to purchase a Kindle was the reduced cost of new books (remember $9.99 new releases???). Now, most new releases are $12.99 and more. Charging more for re-releases of old books than for the actually books themselves is ridiculous. Bring the price down! We know it doesn't cost more for an electronic book, so why would we pay more????

I have to agree with the people who are complaining about the Kindle price being higher than the hardback price. Is the publisher trying to take advantage of those who prefer to use the Kindle? It isn't as though this is a new book. As soon as somebody straightens out the pricing situation then I will add these books to my collection.

Love my kindle but how does the publisher justify the kindle cost to be more than the hardcopy price??? I have no issues paying a fair price for the ebook but it should be less than the hardcopy. I'm reminded of the greed that happened after cd's started to replace cassettes. Cd's were supposed to be cheaper to make etc and thus lower costs but the costs never dropped and in most cases increased..... Anyway, good books (read in paperback) just wanted to read again.

I agree with others that the publisher had better start lowering his prices or we will start using the library again when we want one of their books.

So bad I couldn't finish it- and for me that's saying a lot. Harry dully plods through these books, obsessing over his past, sleeping with his co-workers, and being a stupid lone gun. I gave 2 of these books a good try, hoping I might like one of them and I was rewarded with misery and frustration.
