I bit on an the store promotion promoting this book as a Jack Reacher type of character, or a John Grisham sort of novel. No, not even close. Sorry I spent the money.
As a pilot with an aerospace background, the concept of automatic flight just didn't put me into the page-turner mode (auto-land has been around since the 70's, and with all the drone activity today, a passenger flight without a pilot just doesn't sound as exciting as I suppose the author hoped). The background info on NextGen technology was a yawner, and the overall plot was far-fetched. The dialog in many places was for me just not believable and the characters I did not care enough about to worry how it might all turn out for them.

Written by a teenager who wants to be a Marvel Comic star. Impossible situations that can ONLY be solved by the dynamic duo. Really? They are not even that likable. The audio voice is a beginner too. He is not very good at playing multiple characters.

Max Fend served the government for 10 years as a spy under his cover as a wealthy playboy. But now, hIs cover has been blown, and he's returning home to work in his father's high-tech aviation development company. The company is gearing up for the highly publicized final test-flight for a fully automated (un-piloted) passenger plane. The technology will revolutionize the airline industry and win the company lucrative defense contracts -- if they can keep it out of the hands of Russian hackers.
It's an interesting premise, and the beginning and end are very exciting. There were many events in between that would have been compelling if Watts hadn't repeatedly stopped during takeoff to provide background. Some of these stops were relevant, though mistimed. At other times, the information serves no purpose. Take the introduction of a sergeant who relays an order from his superior to his subordinates. He's drinking coffee when he gets the call. He loves coffee. In fact, he is a coffee purist who grinds his own beans every day. His wife loves his coffee, too, and is looking forward to him doing more cooking when he retires. Do we need to know this? No. He's never mentioned again.
Other than this, the writing is clean and well-edited. There are some original and interesting ideas, such as the unusual, alternative-type gun purchased by Max's girlfriend, who hates guns. It's not a bad read, but I probably won't read another by this author.

Full disclosure: I received a free copy for reading and reviewing.
Full disclosure: I would buy this book. I'm glad I found his earlier set, the War Planners and put him on my short "must read" list. I enjoy the "spy" and "intrigue" genre on the store and Andrew has set himself apart from the typical book of nothing new and same ol' stuff. Beware the twists and turns. Maybe too many surprises - make me glad to not be a spy because I couldn't handle the stress of wondering who is really on my side!
It's a great book. Hard to put down. I look forward to future books from Andrew Watts.

Excellent Thriller from Andrew Watts. If you have read the War Planner's Series, you should not be disappointed in this book. New characters, and an interesting plot line using automatic piloting aircraft. Max Fend will develop into an interesting character similar to Brad Thor's Scot Harvath or Brad Taylors Pike Logan. The story is well written and an enjoyable read. Perfect for a couple of days of summer reading. (or winter reading for that manner) Max Fend is a former DNI operative who is also the son of a (what else) rich father who owns an airplane mfg company. You get Russian Mobsters, FBI investigators, and CIA operators all over this book. Everything runs on a pretty tight timeline to a interesting conclusion.

This is an ok book but suffers from an over active imagination of the author. Having a plane parachute on to a golf course at the last minute to save hundreds of people is only one example. Not going to make you forget about Lee Child or John Grisham.

This is the first review I have done on the store since I really started reading heavily again. In the past I would read several "techno-thrillers" while lounging on the beach in Jamaica, where we like to vacation. But recently, I picked up my wife's older, discarded Kindle and decided to try it out. She had several books on the device that I thought might be worth reading, including the Hunger Games series. Well before long I was hooked and bought my own, updated Kindle.
With that as background, I should mention that I worked for the Navy for 37 years as a civilian electrical engineer. I worked primarily as a test engineer, testing Navy aircraft. I started as a Weapon's System test engineer, but was involved in testing Electronic Warfare Systems later in my career. I finished up heading an organization that used the latest and greatest in simulation/stimulation technologies to test aircraft and their systems in realistic combat environments.
I mention the above only because it means that I don't suffer technical inaccuracies lightly. An author who either doesn't research what he/she is writing OR just plain doesn't know what they are talking about doesn't stay on my "to read" list.
Andrew Watts obviously knows what he is talking about. His writing is technically accurate, thrilling and fun to read. I REALLY enjoyed the Max Fend adventure "Glidepath" and look forward to many more in that series. I just started "The War Planners" and I am already looking forward to the next two books in that series. If you are a techno-geek like myself, I highly recommend this book and this author.

It was a reasonably entertaining book but the characters didn't possess any real compelling qualities, and the plot definitely lacked sophistication... honestly it kind of reminded me of a Hardy Boys Mystery.

This is my first book by this author. I found the book to be a real page turner -technically accurate, thrilling and fun to read. I really enjoyed the Max Fend adventure "Glidepath" and look forward to many more in this series.
The characters were well developed and interesting. I especially liked that Charles and Max had a good father/son relationship. His family and background make for an interesting mix that makes this international intelligence novel a thriller.
If you want a fast moving story with many twists and turns then “Glidepath” will not disappoint. It kept me wondering who was behind all of the betrayal and I was completely surprised by the ending. Max Fend is a character that I hope to hear more from.

Having read, and loved, The War Planner series, I was waiting for Andrew Watts next book and Glidepath didn't disappoint! The subject matter was just as timely and the characters were very well developed. The writing was excellent and I never got lost in the twists and turns. Max Fend is an exceptional character, on his own, but when Renee becomes part of the story (around Chapter 11) the intrigue/action really gets going! So, if you're thinking of going to bed...do so before Chapter 11 or you'll be up all night. (Not really a spoiler alert but...you'll think you 'know'...then realize you don't...then realize you were right...but not really).
I highly recommend this book to anyone that enjoys timely international intrigue. For those who wonder, there is not any graphic sexual content.
You do not have to read The War Planner series prior to reading Glidepath as they are not connected in any way...except for the excellent writing of Andrew Watts! Andrew Watts has definitely secured a spot as a best selling author.

Very engaging, I found the characters well filled out and the story held my attention all the way through. Very intense. The characters are well written and each chapter left me wanting more. Love the character interaction and story development. It is like being in a knife fight that doesn't end until the last page, I love reading his stuff. easy to get caught up in the pages and feel as if you are there.
I really did not appreciate the lack of sleep, so DO NOT pick this up until you are ready to commit to an all-night sleep-defying read!” had a hard time putting the book down.

I think the most amazing thing about this new book was it's utter believability. Considering the components of the plot, a AI controlled commercial plane, Russians and wealthy scion of an aviation company that just happens to be an ex DIA agent, you'd expect to either be bored or onto another book. Watts on the other hand, makes it all works so well that disbelief is trivial compared to turning pages and learning what the next plot twist is.
For reasons, unknown even to me, ID guessed the baddy in the aviation company very early but rather than being frustrated when it came out, it was satisfying.
This book is well written, exciting and characterisations are very good.
There's room for a dandy prequel and or sequels that I'm eager to read. Which is surprising considering I gave up on the War Planners.

Max is the most appealing lead I've ever encountered in a thriller. I enjoy a good tough guy as much as the next person, but after a few hundred nearly identical thriller characters, I've started to get more than a little bored by descriptions of bulging muscles and broad chests and self-involved, arrogant heroes. Max isn't perfect (and shouldn't be) but he's intelligent, competent and human. I can relax and enjoy traveling with him. And he's more believable than most as a CIA operative. The snarling man-mountains that so many thriller writers create would never be able to blend in on an undercover op.
Also, my sincere gratitude to the author for not falling into the amateur trap of writing everything in the first person. If there's one thing more annoying than a self-involved man-mountain, it's a self-involved man-mountain bragging about his own size 37 1/2 feet in the first person. :-)

The storyline is a decent attempt at a Jack Ryan type story with a twist. In parts the book works, but in others the dialogue and plot are stilted and need significant work to make this a viable finished product.

Wow, this was a very, very slow-moving book. And even worse, it is a plot that has been told over and over. Basically, it is a young, inexperienced spy versus the grizzled Russian oligarch who owns a mega yacht with two hundred foot masts. Only a hardened bureaucrat could write a book this dull. For instance, as the hero is closing in on the bad guys and preparing for a tricky landing in his airplane, an FBI agent radios him to setup a conference call! In the middle of the only novel action sequence, the author inserts a conference call.
And I hope the author learns that "try to" is correct grammar. "Try and..." is poor grammar.
No more books for me by Mr Watts.

Once again Andrew Watts has created a hit filled with action, foreign intrigue, multiple intelligence agencies, cutting edge aviation technology and a little love interest thrown in for good measure. Just the idea of pilotless commercial aircraft could make for a great story, but when you add in foreign interests and various intelligence agencies it just get that much better.
His new character Max Fend is well developed and quite believable. I'm looking forward to reading more Max Fend books in the future.
I received an advance reader copy and chose to provide a review.

After reading Andrew Watts "War Planner" trilogy, i wasn't quite sure what to expect from a new and different protagonist. "Glidepath" delivered an engrossing read and captivating storyline. One of Watts' signature talents is his ability to turn good guys into bad guys and back again, in a similar vein to Ludlam or LeCarre. "Glidepath" does not disappoint in this area and you'll find yourself wondering who is really the double-agent... or are there more than one?!? Backed by solid research on aircraft operations, law enforcement/intelligence community procedures, electronic hacking, and locales for the settings in this novel, Watts weaves an intriguing tale with accuracy and detail. You will no it want bff to put this one down until you are finished!

I was lucky enough to get an advanced copy of this excellent work. Very creative and fast pasted. The characters in this work are well developed and lay the base for more books in this series. From the out set Mr. Watts kept me entertained and wanting more. This book flows very nicely and raises questions that everyone would like answers to. I high recommended this work and can't wait for the next book in this series. Andrew Watts is an author that is in that new breed of writers that is just a step away from the big names in action techno adventure. Well done sir much success in the future.

This is the first book in the Max Fend series. I lost many hours of sleep reading this book. The author does a great job of building suspense and maintaining the readers attention. I enjoyed the plot twists and seeing the characters get built up. If you enjoy spy and espionage novels, this is one you'll need to read.

Interesting, exciting, a very good read. I enjoyed the lack of foul language, which is very refreshing these days, as well as just a hint of sex, but nothing explicit. I’m sure there are other readers who appreciate this also. As a pilot, I enjoyed the flight procedures being fairly accurate. One loose end: what motivated Marie to do Pavel’s dirty work?

Welcome to the 21st century and functional AI integrated into commercial aviation. Planes flying without human pilots. Sound impossible, meet Max, his father, the engineers and techniques that make this all possible. Course, you can't help but include the alphabet soup agencies and all of America's enemies who want this technology at any cost. The plot is twisted, action is swift and quick. Thanks for a great read.

This novel reads like a melding of the world of aviation suspense created by J J Nance, and the world of rough and tumble intrigue created by Lee Child in the Jack Reacher series. I have read a lot of thrillers in both genres, and I find it hard to recall a novel which combines these two worlds as well as this one does. Don't pass this one up! It is well worth your time. A truly exciting read!

This was the most absorbing book I've read in a long time. It's about midnight now. I started reading Glidepath around noon and didn't want to put it down. This is great fiction. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
Glidepath was my introduction to Andrew Watts writing. It is so entertaining that I bought and read the rest of his work.
Hopefully, Max Fend will emerge in his second starring role very soon,

I'm a fan of fast moving books, and this is one of them. The story isn't anything special, but the writing and the likable characters made this a very enjoyable read. There are of course a few times you have to suspend belief, but it's fiction after all.
If you're not sure, then download a sample. I'm guessing if you like fast reads, you will like this as well.

Mister Watts did it again. Max and Renee navigated through all of the road block to find out what was going on. The story had many twists and turn but the reader if paying attention had bread crumbs to figure out what was going on Maybe????. Except for the main good and bad guys it was hard to tell who was on what side. Great read. Can't wait for the next chapter in Max and Renee's life or is there.

A. Watts is getting it right! His characters, their thoughts, words, and dialog interaction are all well and sharply written. It's at first a little hard to identify with someone as wealthy as Max, but easier to understand once one figures out what driving him to continually stick his neck out. The story builds to a terrific exciting ending. Already started on second book in the Max Fend series. The stories are current and equally superb fun!!

Developing new aircraft instruments is especially interesting when they fly a plane from take-off roll to taxiing to the terminal. Many twists and turns along the way, with an interesting sub-plot involving a foreign agent or two. Holds your attention and moves at a good pace.

This book was suggested to me by another author. He felt that it would be a good read. He was so very right. The characters were believable, the plot had all the right twists and the action was first rate. Max fend is a character you warm up to quickly. Trust no one. That's what this spy story is all about. I guessed some of the final results as to who was trustworthy. The ending was good. But along the way there was a lot of rather boring descriptions and other things that had little to do with the main story - forcing me to thumb through some pages rather frequently. Overall, it was OK but not special.

I *really* wanted to like this book, and in fairness it’s not awful. But neither is it remotely in the class of the best in the genre. Max is a nice guy and occasially appealing, but he is just not Jack Reacher or Bob Lee Swagger—not remotely. While I wish the author much success, I’d suggest you pass this one up. Sorry.

Andrew Watts books are almost impossible to put down. It is clear that he has actually experienced action like that he is describing.
Such crystal clear, action packed writing is evidence of a rare combination of talent, dedication, and a whole lot of first-hand experience.

Sorry.

Stayed up late so I could finish this book as it was keeping on the edge of my seat to see what happened next. Enjoyed the story line and each of the characters. Will be reading more by this author.

I really enjoyed Glidpath. I had a very hard time laying the book down so I could go to bed. I wanted Max and Renee to solve Max’s problem which they were able to in an exciting manner. It makes me want more.

Max Fend is a good start as a new thriller character, kept my attention but is a bit simplistic. I hope the next book is sharper and written with more bite and detail. There are too many copycat thriller books like this one being churned out.

Not everyone is who them seem... This is a fast paced, riveting thriller. It's got awesome, but scary, technology and brilliant minds to go with it. Great characters and plot. I definitely recommend it.

I read the entire book and it was a decent read. But tiresome after a while. The author has a habit of wrapping his books up a little too neatly. It leaves the reader let down after wading through so much testosterone filled drivel.

I read Andrew Watt's earlier series and thought it was great. This book was very good. Great plot line and characters. It was an easy read and kept me interested. There were no slow parts. The reason I only give it four stars is because there is something about the writing style or scene development that just didn't click with me. Almost like it was clinical. I can't put my finger on it but there was something that made me say a few times, 'why is this paragraph or sentence here? It doesn't really add anything to the story'. But again, I thought the book was very good and can't wait for the next one.

Spies, treachery, technology, espionage, ... Andrew Watts takes the reader on a wild ride with Max Fend. You are never sure who to trust. There are multiple plotlines woven together at a break-neck pace.

Normally not a reader of this genre but I did enjoy the book. Loved the flying details because I am a GA Pilot. They were realistic and made it more believable. Will be reading more of this author.

Shades of W.E.B. Griffin. A super rich hero that wants to be his own man. Max Fend manages to stay ahead of those who want to keep him away from the action. A good story line and plausible plot that could actually become a reality. I would have given it 5 stars if I had not figured out who the inside person was going to be long before she was exposed. I will read more of Mr. Watts books and see what I think of them. The author had a commanding knowledge of actual places and knew his geography.

Andrew Watts writes page turners and this is another gem. The story is exciting and there is enough character development to make it more interesting. His style is easy to read: a perfect combination of dialogue and description!

I was lucky enough to get an advanced copy of this new book! Max Fend is an excellent new hero. The plot is thoroughly modern and the take on current technologies and how they can be used by corrupt elements is frightening, but possible! Had to read it in one go!! Thank you Andrew, you are definitely a Master of your trade. Can't wait for the next Max Fend adventure.

Character development was good, but not as good as with the War Planner series family in my opinion. One good technique was covering the biographies in little bites versus a three page life story
Plot was more like Baldacci than Clancy, and did not have too many twists.
Technical detail is excellent - not too much, not too little. Ditto for the War Planner weapons and ships.

Glidepath is an excellent story with plenty of action to keep your interest level high throughout the book. The mixture of humor, intrigue, surprises, and quick changes in the bad guys made for an enjoyable reading.

I'll admit to loving the genre. And this one is really good. A true page turner that is hard to put down, and that expression works for my Kindle also !. Looking forward to Book 2, and just found I can pre-order on my Kindle Unlimited subscription. That is how I found Andrew initially.

I have read the author's previous books and really enjoyed them. This is a great thriller that kept me interested from beginning to end. The pacing of the book was perfect. It started out fast and kept moving at a good pace right up to the end. Nice plot twist at the end as well. Looking forward to reading more books by Andrew Watts in the future.

Once you start Glidepath, you're not going to want to put it down. It's refreshing to find an author that writes an intriguing novel that keeps you guessing, but isn't looking to lift your wallet. While you're reading, you're also thinking, how much of this type of aircraft advancement is already being developed? We already have auto pilot, is it such a big leap?

In this genre, the two most important techniques are plotting and dialogue. The plot is so unbelievable with multiple descents into Deus ex machina that it seems like the plot of a 1962 soap opera. The dialogue reads like it was written for a 1958 sit-com by a ninth grade creative writing class. The only reason I finished the book was to write the review.

Watts has a lot going for him, brilliantly creative, graphic wordsmith able to bring to life realistic characters and situations in an ultra modern environment that might seem futuristic to some. A most enjoyable read with constant action and unexpected surprises. Also, as a fellow pilot (CFI, AGI & T-Wheel), I especially appreciate his technically accurate aviation terms and actions.

Andrew Watts is an extremely sneaky author. I anticipated a good techno-thriller related to the aviation industry. Instead, I wound up reading an incredible vs. spy vs. spy novel vs. spy novel. The action was non-stop, with the exception of some love interest!

False alarm in Hawaii hit the headlines as I read Glidepath which includes urgent decisions about a national alert for terrorism. Truth and fiction converge. A straight forward tale, the story covers billionaires, clandestine agents, high tech, spies, and bad guys. How might a former KGB leader take over his country?
Please RateGlidepath (A Max Fend Thriller)
As an espionage thriller, it's competent, but that's all I can really say about it. It livened up a bit at the end, which I appreciated. Overall, it just wasn't truly gripping. No real gravitas. I'm trying to be fair here and not nit-pick but it just didn't have that certain something that differentiates the 'ok' from the excellent.
