It's a rare talent to be able to both succeed in business as Jay Samit has -- and be able to articulate how it was done in a way we can all understand and perhaps even try to emulate. Great, accessible storytelling and real take aways you can apply to your business and life. Certainly if you're an entrepreneur or contemplating becoming one, this book is as good a pep talk as you will find.

After working with Jay Samit for many years at Capitol Records / EMI Music he has consistently been a true innovator, inspirational and force of nature. While most people in the music industry feared change, Jay fearlessly led the charge and had fun doing it and made it fun for the innovators around him. Few people can innovate successfully over the course of time and in many types of businesses (from music to startups) and Jay is one of those rare people. He truly wants people to succeed and this book is a testament to his passion in helping people.

The insight and information I gleaned from Disrupt You is immeasurable, invaluable and immediately accessible. Packed with lessons and entertaining anecdotes, I was able to identify the things I was doing wrong as an entrepreneur. The biggest gem I got from Jay was the power and importance of delegation. I enjoyed the strength and spirit of personal experiences that come across in Disrupt You! And I'm not one to pick up a business or self-improvement book -- at all. It's fun and motivating. The subtext to all of this is to learn best by doing for yourself. Take risks, mine the gold within failure, and go forth to win.

I've always been someone that has asked questions about everything. When I was a young girl they nicknamed me "WHY". I ordered Jay's book and read it and was so taken back I read it again. That's only been the second book that I can't put down. His words speak to all of us. No one is cut from a special cloth or some great DNA, we all have it. I've been creating things as long as I can remember and reading Jay's book was the first time I've ever heard someone talk about the small thing that can make a big difference in each one of our lives. I highly recommend this book you will not be disappointed. Not only does Jay have an outstanding brilliant mind he is humble. It not every day you can put those two words in the same sentence.

DISRUPT YOU! by Jay Samit is a must read for anyone interested in creating a lasting legacy. The book gives you the blue print to take on a big challenge in the world and find the ultimate solution. It's not easy being a disruptor though the author gives you the ultimate guide to achieve your goals. I LOVED the audio book and for all "disruptors in training" listening to this book while you are out getting your exercise is the perfect way to take in all the great lessons in the book!

My favorite chapter is Chapter 16: "The principles of Disrupt You! apply far beyond the world of business. Ideas are worthless unless you get them out of your head and into action."

I also love the concept of OPM-using Other People's Money!

I highly recommend this book as a must read or must listen to book! It's loaded with great ideas and for anyone setting out on a journey to change the world in new and remarkable ways you will want to start by diving into this incredible book!

To Einstein it was clear that both physics and psychology were two sides of a coin—that is both approaches to understanding the cosmos (the Greek word for order) are part of one logical system.

The object of all science, whether natural science or psychology,
is to co-ordinate our experiences and to bring them into a logical system.
—Albert Einstein
(The Meaning of Relativity, 1923, p.1)

Einstein also considered symmetry to be the simplest, possible, purely mathematical idea that all of reality was based on.

Based on our experiences so far, we have reason to be confident that nature is the realization of the simplest conceivable mathematical concept.
—Albert Einstein
(On the Method of Theoretical Physics, June, 10, 1933, own translation)

Scientific research is based on the idea that everything that takes place is determined by laws of nature, and therefore this holds for the actions of people.
—Albert Einstein
(Albert Einstein’s Letter to Phyllis, 1936)

In previous posts (see, e.g., “Einstein’s Equivalence Principle, Quantum Mechanics & Value Investing”), I’ve outlined why Einstein’s groundbreaking equivalence principle—the premise of his revolutionary understanding of gravity—is this one, simple and purely mathematical and symmetric concept (system, standard, framework) that serves as the universal underpinning of reality.

Einstein’s equivalence principle can in abstract, simple, mathematical terms be understood as: UNITY(1, ADDING UP)=MORE(2, INFINITY), since the equivalence principle states that locally the effects of:
1. GRAVITY (1, CONCENTRATION, warping of space-time) and
2. ACCELERATION (2, in short: MORE and more speed)
are identical, the same: SYMMETRIC!

Einstein’s great advance in 1905 was to put symmetry first, to regard the symmetry principle as the primary feature of nature that constrains the allowable dynamical laws (...) Ten years later this point of view scored a spectacular success with Einstein’s construction of general relativity.
—David Gross
(The role of symmetry in fundamental physics, PNAS, vol.93 no.25, 10.12.1996, p. 14256)

So, symmetry then is the space-independent and timeless premise that serves both as the basic IDEA and PROCESS of self-organization: from fundamental physics to chemistry to biology to thinking. And THINKING is where Jay Samit’s book “DISRUPT YOU!” offers forward-thinking advice—based on the author’s rich experience as a successful, pioneering, groundbreaking entrepreneur, scholar, adviser and innovator—on how to obtain constructive, action-oriented patterns of thinking. Eloquently, drawing on his own, profound battled-tested understanding of overcoming fear, Jay Samit, e.g., highlights that fear keeps us from acting, and he outlines simple steps that help to overcome this feeling. How does this enable me to better understand Einstein’s equivalence principle?

Plan for ways to get more enjoyment into your life and you will get more joy out of it.
—Jay Samit
(Disrupt You! 2015, p.51)

Einstein’s equivalence principle, UNITY(1)=MORE(2), tells us that fundamentally, i.e. mathematically, all (infinity) is one. So far so simple. Due to the MORE-TERM, which can be understood as EXPANSION, it becomes clear that unity grows; and we all know that as the big bang that has evolved into the universe which we know today. Still pretty simple! Now, the MORE-TERM, the creative aspect of symmetry, can also be understood as
• less unity, as More means more parts (which gives us, e.g., particles or large objects of mass like stars).
• and it can be understood as “MORE THAN CAN BE KNOWN”, which is something that, e.g., manifests in the 2nd law of thermodynamics, which tells us that entropy (simply put chaos, disorder or “More than we can know”) grows.
• Put together: Less is MINUS, and there being “MORE THAN CAN BE KNOWN” is scary, since it tells us that one cannot control everything.
• And there we are: FEAR! MORE, even though in the overall equation of Einstein’s equivalence principle it is a positive, highly creative dynamic, it is what it is: always MORE. Aristotle put it that way “The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.”

Jay Samit’s book “Disrupt You!” powerfully outlines how fear—as a negative state of mind—can be overcome, if one adopts a certain way of thinking that is a) positive, b) inspiring and c) based on integrating information (learning), so that ideas can be translated into uplifting, future-oriented actions. That is how Jay Samit’s book helped me to get a better understanding of the psychological side of Einstein’s equivalence principle. This enhanced comprehension includes an empowering momentum which makes the symmetric essence more tangible: that is, the balance, inherent to Einstein’s equivalence principle, between being focused (UNITY) and open-minded (MORE). After all, the future is open and contains infinite possibilities (MORE). To get these ideas manifested in a constructive, joyful way, is one of the many valuable lessons the book “Disrupt You!” offers with hands-on and simple approaches.

Most fittingly, I think, chapter One begins with a quote by Albert Einstein:

The world as we have created it is a process of our thinking. It cannot be changed without changing our thinking.
—Albert Einstein
(as quoted in: Disrupt You! 2015, p.9)

The world won’t conform to your vision. It is up to explain the future in terms that those living in the past and the present can follow.
—Jay Samit
(Disrupt You! 2015, p.93)

I saw Jay Samit giving a presentation about how of the largest enterprises businesses that dominated the Fortune 500 list decades ago, over half do not exist anymore. This is because of disruption, which is much more prevalent today. This is why Blockbuster, Borders, & Kodak do not exist anymore and why even Shopping Malls are on the threat of existence because of you guessed it...the store. Jay's book is a must read for all entrepreneurs and business owners in that it prepares you for the threats that are facing our industries. You either disrupt, or you will be disrupted. Highly recommend this book. It's easy to read and offers many in-depth examples of how to adapt to today's economic environment.

Today, companies are faced with "Disrupt or Die." Long gone are the days when the company owed you a job for life or the training to move onward and upward in another organization. Today, it is incumbent on each one of us to disrupt ourselves to stay relevant and ahead of the next curve. "Disrupt You" is a practical guide, filled with ideas, examples, and methods to make sure each individual has the tools to prevent going the way of the professional dodo-bird. There are concepts for everyone to learn from and adopt. Love it!

As a 40+ year veteran of retained executive search, I have had the privilege of interviewing literally thousands of CEO's and senior management of the largest organizations of the world, so it is difficult to impress me. However, Jay Samit is one of those rare individuals who is brilliant, talented, and successful, yet extremely humble at the same time. It takes such unusual humility to listen and learn, and that is obviously what Jay has been doing. His book is a testament to his listening skills, because he has listened and learned from the very best. We should all read his new book with gratitude, because Jay has used his insights to capture the essence of what makes business leaders and entrepreneurs successful.
