You know, "classics" often are . . . well . . . boring. It must be admitted. But the Three Musketeers is actually quite good.. I was surprised. When I was done I was sorry it was over. I will very likely - gasp - read it again someday, and undoubtedly will buy the mobi collection of Dumas' works for my Kindle

It's interesting listening to an old book about an even older time. The technical aspects of the CD are excellent. The reading is good, clear. I'm having some problems dealing with a classic, but I suspect that is my problem, and not anyone else's. What was rollicking in Dumas' time has changed in the hundred+ years since it was written.

The four main characters lived an exciting life. They fought against the most powerful man in Europe and lived to brag about it. As a team they complimented each other's strengths and vices; they couldn't have had it better. They had to separate in the end like all who live in this world.

While at times disjointed in chronology, it's a wonderful story. Loved it. See my name. The book fills in many blank spots beyond the typical overview of the characters and times. Tom Clavin made extensive use of newspaper reporting of the times and it pays off.

One lone missing angle and sadly overlooked at the the end of the book is Bat's time in New York City. His address coincides perfectly with that of "Satan's Circus", a roughly 20 by 5 block region, N to S, of NYC's mid west side.

The area originally ran from 24th Street to 42nd Street and from Fifth Avenue to Seventh Avenue. By the turn of the 20th century, it had expanded northward to 57th or 62nd Street and west to Eighth Avenue encompassing parts of what is now the Flatiron District, NoMad,
Chelsea, Hell's Kitchen, the Garment District and the Theater District.

Read something about Satan's Circus and you'll see not only why Bat decided to give NYC a try but you'll see that areas of NYC at the turn of the 20th century were more hellbent and lawless than all the Kansas cowtowns wrapped up as one. Like to know more about Bat's doins in the area but could easily guess he had a good time.

Dumas has brought his romance, adventure and tragedy in this book. It is so great! It's a adventure complete with a murder,a spy, brave nights and a evil king. It's a great book but might be hard to understand.

This is unabridged which I appreciate and didn't see noted before I purchased it. Whether you like classics or not, this a great tale of intrigue and adventure. I have laughed out loud a few times. A good laugh is always good for the soul.

I did find the book interesting from an historic and classical point of view. Never seemed to reach the point or end for that matter. Maybe it should have been named the 4- Musketeers. There were a lot of loose ends.

Fighting, romance, broken hearts, drunken debauchery, patriotism, un-breakable friendship, good guys, bad guys, and more. One of the best stories ever written. None of the movies are as good as the book!

This book has incredible characters that go on grand adventures. All four of the main characters have traits that every man wants balanced by faults that no man wants. With a strong focus on chivalry, this is a great Man book

I so enjoy most of the old classic novelists, like Andre Dumas and Jules Verne. The Musketeers is just an exciting and well written story about possible history, love, intrigue and adventure. Sure appeals to me.

One of the many classics I have read, I love getting into the minds of writers from 'back in the day'. The way they use words to paint ideas and hold conversations is astounding. And for being a free download, and I happy with how accurate it is from physical book to digital.

It's obviously dated....I prefer the movies. The main things that ruined it for me:
1) treatment of female characters, including a rape scene that is completely brushed over
2) slow and boring
Still glad I read it so now I know, but I don't think I was really missing anything by just watching the updated movies.
