Nicholas Sansbury Smith has really crushed it with this Book 7 of the Extinction Series, Extinction War. Had the action gotten any more exciting than it is, I don't think I could have finished this zompoc novel. The characters readers of the series have cared about for some time now have changed a lot. Some have passed on as a result of the zombie war and the military coup. Heck, I even miss a mouse from the book! Captain Beckham, now Captain Beckham, has undergone drastic physical changes but has kept his loyalties intact. Big Horn is still hanging in there, and Master Sergeant Fitz has really become the hero I never expected in the first several books. He even has a love interest!
I strongly recommend Nicholas Sansbury Smith's Extinction Series to other serious readers of the zompoc milieu. He has done a great job of creating action, developing plot, engineering characters, and even surprising reader expectations with twists and outright shock.

For the holidays, I received a copy of this audiobook from Santa.

Nicholas Sansbury Smith has a knack for creating amazing storylines that are both realistic and frightening; he also has a knack for twisting and drawing out the raw emotion from his listeners. This book is about not only tying up loose ends but it’s so much more – it is a rollercoaster ride that leaves the listener reeling with shock … loss … sadness … and a few moments of Oh HELL Yeah! There is no waffling, Smith goes for the throat and wrings all emotions out of his listeners mercilessly. Every single second is action-packed; it’s like Smith put everything he had into this book. There is not a dull or slow moment to be found.

Characters were awesomely well-developed with their personalities reflective of who they were by both Smith and Pinchot. Where Smith “brought it”, Bronson Pinchot ratcheted it up with an amazing performance. To go with the intense drama unfolding, Pinchot rose to the challenge and delivered the most powerful performance I have heard. Each character has their own voice and personality. A personality that oozes out of the voice – especially Wood – Pinchot set my teeth on edge each time with the lazy draw of Wood.

Can I just say, this entire series was a huge roller coaster ride. So much action, and yet so many characters you come to love, and sometimes lose. The premise for the series is very plausible, and that makes it all the more terrifying. Those superbugs are being developed, and its just a matter of time before someone makes a mistake. Gripping tale of adventure, love and loss. I highly recommend this entire series. You won't regret it! And if you are an audio book reader as I am, the narrator is excellent for this series. Nicholas Sansbury Smith knows how to keep the frantic pace up, and this series will leave you breathless and wanting more!

This series is absolutely amazing! This book was the perfect ending to this crazy ride. I had originally ordered this book on the store...I had just finished "aftermath" and "lost" and I was going nuts waiting for this one. I ordered it the day it was released and then happened to see it at our Walmart the next day. I went a little phsyco trying to decide what to do....do I wait for my online order to ship(but that could take days!) Do I buy the Walmart copy and end up with two (good option for me, husband wasn't to thrilled though) ah! What to do!?!. In the end, I bought the Walmart copy so I could have it in my hands that instant. I couldn't wait a few days to read it. I HAD to know what would happen. How this story would end. Who would live....would anyone live?? Extinction War did NOT disappoint. It was just as fast paced and nail biting as all the other books in this series. If you loved a fast paced story that you can't put down then these books are for you.

I also got a coworker hooked on these. He is currently reading "war" and has had just as much fun reading this series as I have. Our only problem is that our foreman's last name is Beckman....we have both caught ourselves calling him Beckham on occasion....oh well

This was a great book to end a great series of post apocalyptic times that keeps you engaged with the characters within and on the edge of your seat with the turn of every page. I felt that the ending was a little abrupt, however the final book and the series as a whole was just an incredible journey. This was my first series (and books) that I have read by Nicholas Sansbury Smith (NSS) and I can't wait to start another series by him. If his other series are anything like the Extinctions series, NSS is definitely going to be at the top of my list for favorite author. The twists and turns in this last book will definitely keep you interested as this series comes to its end. The characters have new jobs, promotions and you just don't know what's going to happen next. If you haven't started the Extinction series, I highly recommend you start. Great job NSS, can't wait to start my next series.

The author always writes fantastic characters in compelling stories that grip me and make me care about the characters while thrilling me with the action. This book is no different and put my emotions through the wringer. These are characters I have grown to know and love and it is tough to say goodbye to them. The pace is very fast and the action was thrilling. I was highly entertained by this book and the entire series. I highly recommend this book and everything this great author writes.

I thoroughly enjoyed the ENTIRE series. I read about fifteen pages into book One and was hooked entirely. The reading is fast and nonstop and you care about the characters and what happens to them. Keep up the Good work Mr. Smith

Sadly, this is the last book of an excellent series. This book however, takes off and you are just on a non stop roller coaster ride of action until the end! Excellent story, and I am deeply saddened that this gripping saga is over, but what a tremendous tale it was. I am going to miss the characters!

This was a great ending to a great series. I’ve read plenty of endings that seemed like the writer was rushed to figure out a good way to end it, but NSS seemed to have it all figured out several books ago. I look forward to continuing the Trackers and He’ll Divers series.

I'm a big fan of this series, from the very first page of the very first book. It's incredible that the author really brings the best out of some of our fears and the best out of science fiction with each turn of the page.

Loved it. Glad my favorite characters all lived (with Nicholas, you never know!!!). Loved Apollo and thanks for giving Fitz a girlfriend!. How about starting all over with new characters or going back and telling what happened to the VP after the bomb hit the new White House.

An excellent wind down to a fast paced post apocalyptic world with one unexpected turn after another. I could give some examples of what makes me really like this series so much, but I fear that would give away more than anyone should know before reading it, so I won't. Needless to say Nicholas Smith has a writing style that I enjoy very much, and his attention to detail is amazing to me - especially some of the really technical scientific stuff. Have to give him mega credit for having done his research. Another aspect that amazes me is how quickly he seems to produce the works.

Having finished the series proper, I am now reading his short story "Extinction Lost", which I can also see as appealing possibly to those fans of weird war, which I am also. But then, the whole series does as well.

A visit into a world I don't think has much appeal, but sure made for some great reading!

Getting tired of the series. Really enjoyed the first books but after reading a couple of the Kindle World books in addition to the originals I've just lost interest. I read a few pages of this book and because I was past the return window I just removed the book from my device and moved on. This isn't a criticism of the book or the series but the books just seemed more fresh and interesting in the beginning.

Holy crap! I don't know what else to say! I want more of everything. 7 books in and I feel as if I am deep in variant war. Please let me hang out with them more. I feel as if I'm losing part of my family. Must read the characters feel like family!

I have followed this series. Being a veteran, loved the realistic characters and action. Hurt with the pasting of each team member. To be truthful, I was starting to think there was no way to end this with humanity surviving. Great job Nicholas on bringing the story to a realistic conclusion.

Yeehawwwwww, what a ride!! Mr. Smith does it again! (not that we expected anything different from what we've come to expect from him) Edge of your seat, spellbinding, cross your fingers, reading with one eye open action! Catch your favorite rollercoaster ride today! I'm really hoping that Mr. Smith will see his way clear to writing a 5 years later book so we don't have to quite let these characters go yet. Congratz on an awesome series!

The end of the war is at hand. A civil war is at hand in th U.S. And Team ghost , the Marines and the rest of the European forces are trying to find victory in Europe. Beckman is down but not out and Fits is trying to live up to his role as the new leader of Team Gohst fighting in Europe. Reading this last chapter in A Great Series, I found my self going back to the first book and reliving Team Ghosts story again, their up and downs , losses , heart aches and the little boys they found almost the way. That this is the last is a hard and dad thing to accept but that Nicholas Smith gave us all a series to love was a gift. Now if you want to know if we win or lose in the end, week take the time to read and find out for yourself. I don't want to spoil it for you. And Nick, you can write more later on this if you want.

The series of stories is one of my most favorite horror/zombie books I have ever read. Once I start one these books I cannot put it down. This is book 7 and the end of this series. This is a large book with 464 pages so it takes a while to read.

The action is non stop with the Government of the USA in jeopardy of being destroyed by terrorists rebel factions. In addition the mutated humans are wiping out mankind on a global basis and humans are on the verge of extinction.

Our heroes of the story are tired, wounded and in many cases dead or dying from the onslaught of constant war without end. I’ll stop here so I don’t ruin the storyline for you. Let’s just say, “If you love action then you will love this book!”

This is a great book and I really enjoyed it. It was a great ending to one of my favorite series and I highly recommend that you read all of the books in order. Nicholas Stansbury Smith has become one of my favorite authors. I think I have purchased all of his books and I will look for whatever story he writes next. He is one of the great new talents writing horror, suspense and sci-fi books today. He is an author that you should follow.

What I enjoyed about this book is the the action was constant and the flow of the storyline was consistent with the previously released books of the series. This ending story does a good job of closing all it the issues and plot scenarios that the previous books disclosed. This is a sign of a good author that realizes that the followers of the storyline want to see it closed out with no loopholes or unresolved issues.

In addition Nicholas always finds a way to bring new material to the story line that keeps the book interesting. The author does his homework on understanding biotech weapons and military style of weaponry. I think that this is what brings a real sense of reality to Nick’s stories. Such detail brings a story to life with a sense that it could really be happening. Authors that do their homework and understand the principles on which their book is based write more interesting and entertaining stories.

Such detail in a story makes it seem more like reality and it brings a sense of possibility to the story line. Such tremendous detail keeps me focused on the story and not on the fact the author doesn't know what he is writing about. Nicholas Smith knows the technical details involved in his story and also how to weave the details together to make the story exciting.

This to me represents a professional writer that does their homework about the details in their book.

This is why Nicholas Smith’s books are some of the most interesting books I have read.

This is also the best apocalyptic series that I have ever read.

I have read some incredibly good books. I have loved some incredibly good series of books. The whole Extinction series of books is so beyond “good”. But book 7 War, is the BEST. By far this book had my heart pounding NONSTOP. I couldn’t stop reading this. Literally every single second, if I could just read a few lines I did it. And even now at the end, I am flipping back to the beginning to read again. The things that make a series great are all captured in this. There is believability as well as suspension of disbelief. The characters truly are like family now. We’ve fought, bled, loved with them all. The terrors in this are both fantastical and even some real. By far and large the greatest book right up there with my very cherished series. A MUST read.

The New King of Science Fiction has done it again. Extinction War is the perfect wrap up of the Extinction Cycle series. With a host of none stop action packed edge of your seat moments. We rejoin Team Ghost has they are spread across the globe on their quest to save the human race from extinction and we finally see the conclusion of this decade's greatest literary thrill rides. I don't want to give away this exciting journey with any spoilers because you deserve to find out for yourself but I will say this gets a 10 out of 10 for completion of a series, thrills and character development. Nicholas Sansbury Smith has proven himself as a young writer that can develop a series and keep you coming back for more. That is why I believe with this series finale he deserves to be crowned the New King of Science Fiction. He can truly keep you gripped in fear with the monsters that he creates. The amount of shear detail with out going on sideways rants that don't offer anything to a story is breathe of fresh air from the current writers of today.

This is the final book in what has been the best series I've read!! From page one on it's a complete torturous hell ride through ravaged lands on both sides of the Atlantic and takes you in a terrifying tour of some of the greatest cities or what's left of them!

Let me tell you, I have no more fingernails after reading this book. It was non-stop action throughout and I could never predict who would live or die. I won’t give anything away but I am ecstatic my favorite character wasn’t killed off! I’m going through a book hangover and am really sad it’s the last of Team Ghost’s stories. Kudos, Mr. Smith! It’s phenomenal.

I expected a quality finale to the series, and I got one! There were triumphs and disappointments, laughs and tears, and Smith put together a really beefy, detailed conclusion to this great series. The descriptions of some of the new "monsters" might give me nightmares yet! This series is a great read, and the ending did not disappoint! A++

What a great story! The author changes perspectives throughout the book and made it a page turner. I couldn't put it down! There were story twists and turns that I never saw coming. This was to be the last of the series, but I would certainly read another, if he decided to continue the story. Five stars hands down.

Decent continuation of the series. It's getting formulaic and Sansbury seems to writing himself into one of 2 corners. Either total annihilation of humanity, or some super miracle cure at the last minute.
Not bad series, above the level of many others of the same genre, but dragging on a bit.

The battle for humanity's survival continues. What a intense, rousing, breathtaking finish to the series. Human villains and mutated humans maintain the pressure on our heroes as they face a never-ending barrage of horrors. Crips, clean writing, fantastic pace and emotional heart all combine into another winning installment of this fantastic series.

A fitting and excellent end to the series. Not much to say that other reviewers haven't already said. I just hope the author decides to do a spin off series or keep writing in this universe. These characters, science, and plot is some of the best in apocalyptic fiction out there.

A perfect end for what is without a doubt, my all time favorite sci fi series. It had all the elements of a great suspense story, love, loss, conflict and resolution. The author has done an outstanding job of developing very real characters who don't always get a happy ending, however the ending was still very satisfying to reader. It's not all doom and gloom, but it does portray what a struggle for survival would feel like. I recommend this book too anyone who loves sci fi or anyone at all who loves to read.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Not only would i recommend this book to a friend, id recomment the first 6 books before this, i wouldnt recommend this to be the first one you read of course only because its the ending book, but i would recommend this book to anyone looking for that one of a kind military post apocalyptic thriller that leaves you wanting more and more!!

What did you like best about this story?

what i liked best was how nick writes his confrontations and how well the characters are portrayed, the fights and the battles arent drug out into 6 hours of monotonous babbling, they just undoubtedly kick ass! they will have you gripping your tablet reading on wide eyed and terrified, the characters are so well put together you find yourself growing mini relationships and feelings towards each individual character, whether it's love towards the beloved heroes or hate towards the bad guys. absolutely amazing job.

Which character – as performed by Bronson Pinchot – was your favorite?

Mr fitzy.. i love you bud.

Any additional comments?

Id like to add that besides how the story was delivered, with bronson doing an amazing job, nick did a very thorough job bringing this series to a blissfully painful end. As sad as i am to see it end i truly loved this series, the ride it takes you on is one of a kind

I don't know what to say about this book to do this justice!!! It was phenomenal. Everything I wanted and more.

It's all out war, both with the Variants and ROT! The battle for Europe is still going strong and Fitz and Apollo are knee deep in it. The Variants there are bigger, badder and harder to destroy than what they had in America, and it's all Fitz can do to keep Team Ghost alive. Meanwhile, in America, Beckham is battered and bruised but still fighting, well just about!! Horn is trying to keep Kate safe, President Ringgold is trying to hold onto her country, safe zones are allying with ROT and things look grim, especially with the Hemorrhage Virus being used against them, but nobody will go out without a fight!!!

This book just about broke me!! I was on the edge of my seat throughout and had such a hard time putting it down, but I also didn't want to keep reading because that meant that the series would end!! I wanted to devour it, but I didn't, I took my time reading it and just immersed myself in the War. I felt everything these characters felt, I cried with them and I laughed with them. I gasped, I was tense and I was terrified for them, I was completely captivated by these characters and their journeys. I'm sad to see it end, but also happy with the way it ended!! Not all the characters made it, and those that did were changed completely, but that's what makes it so good, so real!! That's what gives this series it's heart... the amazingly written characters!

The plot of this was extremely fast paced and intense!! Right from the start, we are thrown into the action of fighting the enemy, both in Europe and America. And boy does it get tense!! So many times had me gasping and going, no, no, no, NOOOO!! Then there were times where I was biting my nails and waiting to see what would happen next, and what happened next would break my heart, but other times would leave me smiling and going, yes!!!! It was an emotional rollercoaster, but so, so worth it! I want to talk about Piero, but I can't, I want to talk about Davis, but I can't, I wan't to talk about Beckham, but I can't!! There is so much I want to say, but I can't because it will spoil things.

In all, this book was phenomenal. As I said already, it was all I wanted and more! It even surpassed what I was expecting!! It was action packed, intense, an edge of your seat ride, emotional, and absolutely brilliant!! My heart has been captured by these characters and I do hope we see more from them, but if the author feels that their story has come to an end, then I'm ok with that!! Horn, Beckham and Fitz have come a long way and deserve a break ;)

Seriously guys, there are very, very few books that I recommend as passionately as I do this series. Go give them a go, you won't be sorry!!!

The excitement continues as Capt’s Beckham and Rachel Davis try to derail R.O.T. and self-appointed president Andrew Wood.  President Ringgold is fighting a civil war while Lovato tries to find the cure to the virus.  When everything comes together … people will die, variants will rise in their places and the civil war gets messier and far deadlier.

In Europe, Team Ghost is encountering different lethal variants and coming to terms with its new leader, Master Sergeant Fitzpatrick.  Unlike anything Fitzpatrick has seen before, his confidence nearly shattered he rallies his team and together they face the insect variants head on.

Nicholas Sansbury Smith has a knack for creating storylines that are realistic and frightening; he also has a knack for twisting raw emotion from his listeners.  This book is tying up loose ends but it’s so much more – it is a rollercoaster ride that leaves the listener reeling with shock … loss … sadness … and a few moments of Oh Hell Yeah!  There is no waffling, Smith goes for the jugular and wrings all emotions out of his listeners mercilessly.  Every single second is action-packed; it’s like Smith put everything he had into this book.  There was not a dull or slow moment to be found.

Characters were well-developed and their personalities reflective of who they were by both Smith and Pinchot.  Smith “brought it”, and Bronson Pinchot ratcheted it up with an amazing performance.   To go with the intense drama unfolding, Pinchot rose to the challenge and delivered the most powerful performance I have heard.  Each character has their own voice and personality; for some personality that oozes out of the voice – especially Wood – Pinchot set my teeth on edge each and every time with the lazy draw of Wood.

Don’t miss out!  Anyone who enjoys action, well-developed stories and characters, and zombies – this is a series to hear!

Mr Sansbury Smith created one of my favourite series of all time with the Extinction Cycle series and book 7 - War - did not disappoint (well, maybe the fact that it’s probably the last book in the series disappoints me but I’m sure he’ll be back with something else,) if you haven’t read the first books then buy them now!
Back in action again with Beckham, Kate, Fitz and all the other characters we’ve got to know so well, as well as some new ones, the fate of the human race hangs in the balance thanks to a psycho who’s declared himself president of the USA, his only mistake being he’s forgotten to tell our heroes he’s in charge! The story switches between action in the US and Europe and follows our heroes as they battle to defeat the variants, and the RoT, very well written and with lots of twists and turns!
It’s a rollercoaster of a ride and one that I could not put down, very highly recommended,

Possibly the final book in the Extinction cycle series, it ties up all the loose ends while still keeping you on the edge of your seat. Will Beckham be victorious and will the new team ghost under fitz even survive? You’ll have to read it to find out and see the next stage of the variants evolution.

OK. What do I have to say about an author and a series I have come to realize are my favorites of all time? Exactly! But if you love military action that grabs you, draws you in and has you imagining what you would do next if you were there.....this is it! If you enjoy characters whose inner thoughts, put on paper, in life threatening situations makes you empathize with them and feel like you are there with them....this is it! The battle scenes, the thoughts before and after physical engagements are true to life. Believe me. Well now that the existing world threat has been eliminated can the series' remaining characters relax and get to the task of rebuilding? I have a feeling that there are still some threats lurking in the aftermath that will compel the "Ghosts" to reorganize, "kit up" and kick some ass! What are you waiting for? Go get this series and enjoy.
