When Zachary beaver Came to Town is a great book that covers many topics including death, freindship, presure, and a wide variety of vocabulary.
When Zachary Beave Came to town is very exiting and huorus, but at the same time very serious. this book will keep you turning page after page and will never let you put it down with suprises around every corner. I know this book is ment for middle school kids but my aunt is the one who recomended it to me and I think that a forth grader could read it with no problem. It is about two frinds who go through a lot together in one summer including helping out the fattest boy in the world.
I don't usually like to read but this book hade me hooked and reading all the time. If you like to read and even if you don't I really recomend this book.

This story tells of many different people. A 642 pound boy arrives in the small town of Antler, Texas. Not many exciting things happen until Zackary Beaver (the 642 pound boy) comes to town. The story is told through Toby's eyes. I rate this book four stars because it is a good book for children. It also shows many different peoples.

Toby's mom was going to be in a country singing contest. Then she never came back, Toby's parents split up.
Zachary came to town and he was the talk of the town. Everybody went to see him; pepole paid to go see him. People would come by and drop off bags of food for him. People all over Texas pay two dollars to see Zachary, then make fun of him and ask him rude questions about how much he eats.Zachary was a lier; he never went to all those places he said had gone to. Cal and Toby and everybody else helped Zachary get baptized. They also took him to the drive in movie theatre. Cal and Toby thought he was mean at first, but as the book continued he changed. They didn't even want to get to know him better. In Antler, Texas he changed and he made a few friends.

So it was about to be Thanksgiving break and I asked the school librarian to recommend some books to me for the break. She's a bit cooky and sometimes gives me books I don't really like or want to read but this time I decided to take some of her suggestions. I checked out this book, not really excited to read it, however boy was I surprised! I really enjoyed reading this book. It was a bit slow in the beginning but I got sucked into it. I usually like books with action and mystery....not this book. In fact nothing HUGE (no pun intended) happens in it however I connected with each of the characters very well. This is one of those book you shoul NOT judge by it's cover. The award it won was well awarded!

I'm an 18 year old college student, who loves nothing more than to read. Majoring in childen education, I esp. love reading children's books. After beginning the book, I couldn't put it down. I finished the book in about a week, and loved ever part of this book. This book made me realize that you should pick people out just because they look different. Some of the most weirdest and strange looking people out there today, can be have the most amazing minds in the world. I loved this book and would reccomend it for anyone young and old.

Have you ever wanted to pick up a good book and just read forever? If yes, then When Zachary Beaver Came To Town is exactly the kind of book that you are looking for. This book takes a look into the harsh world of children. It examines how children that come from a small town look for anything and everything to do. This is a wonderful book that shows friendship, loyalty, and dealing with growing up. When Zachary Beaver Came to Town is not just any old book. This is a book that breaks down chapter by chapter and grabs your attention. It is an easy reading book that makes you ask for more. We really enjoyed When Zachary Beaver Came to Town and hope that we would stumble upon books like this one in the future.

This book is possibly one of the best books in this years KSU English Festival list. This story tells about a large over weight boy named Zachary Beaver. Who one day with his manager, Paulie Rankin, came to the small town of Antler, Texas, in this town everyone knows everything about each other, but when Zachary comes to town it's a real mystery. Toby and his friend Cal are possibly the most curious about Zach, also with their curiosity comes with the need to help Zach with what he needs. This book teaches a good lesson: Big things can happen in little places. Over all this is a good book I recomend this to anyone who likes to read. Thanks for reading my review. : )

"When Zachary Beaver Came to Town" is a very good book. It made me laugh a lot. It kept my attention throughout the entire thing. I am not a very good reader and I don't read hardly ever, but this is the best book that I have ever read. If you ever just want to read a good book this is the one that you should read. This book is funny but also serious. It is telling about a couple of boys that are helping a kid that is overweight and in an exhibit. They bring him food and talk to him and just comfort him. It shows that no matter how old you are you can still help somone in need. It will make you think. I can't wait till I can get the sequel of this book.

I don't know why this book always stuck with me, along with HOLES, which I read around the same time I read this book. It's just a strange story, it's about a fat kid. I love quirky books. It's not for everyone. I really like the cover art too.

I thought this book was great. Its about Toby and his small Texas town. The book had a lot of action adventure and had a good story plot. I could not put the book down. I recomend When Zachary Beaver Came to Town to anyone who likes a good story about people helping other people even though they are different.

"When Zachary Beaver Came To Town" was a really enjoyable book for me, it's funny at times, it has a great plot, cool characters, and I LOVE the setting in the '70s in a small texas town. Great book for any pre-teens/young teenagers, I think you should pick it up today.

Tobias Wilson (Toby) is a typical middle school boy. He has a best friend, he is in love with the middle school hottie and is board with life. What awaits this boy is not typical. The book made me laugh, when I hear about how Cal got his black tooth, and it made me cry (for several reasons but I am not going to tell you, so you'll have to read the book). If any parent wants to know the feelings and emotions of their middle school boy, they should read this book. Issues the book adressess are: divorce, death, broken hearts, best-friend relations, and middle school pranks. READ THIS BOOK

I don't understand how and why this book received the awards it did. It's slow, dull, has too much going on in the plot, drags baptism and religion in as if these are resolutions, and is easily forgotten. I'm giving it three stars instead of two because Holt is a very good writer who, in my opinion, wrote something that doesn't work.

I heard this book won a big award today so I went right to thelibrary and read it! I think it is very well written. However, Ifound myself very far ahead of the story, so that I was not rushing to find out what happened next because I had already guessed what would happen next. I actually put it down to go read a magazine! I think this is a book that adults may like more kids in middle school like me. Oh well. But the writing was still good.

Personally, I liked the book because of the funny parts, which there were a lot of! Zachary is unbeilivably fat! Despite this fact Toby and Cal soon become friends with Zachary. I would recommend this book to everyone! Hope you enjoy the book!

I am good friends with Mrs. Holt's daughter but yet I am reviewing this completely objectively. This book grabs you emotionally and does not let go. It is a very moving story with a great amount of humour as well. I reccomend this book to anyone who feels the urge to read.

...P>This book is a somewhat funny book and Kimberly Willis Holt is very descriptive. You feel like you are there when it is happening. I recommend When Zachary Beaver Came to Town to anyone who needs a good book . This book has won the National Book Award. Kimberly Willis Holt is also the author of My Louisiana Sky.
I did like this book because there are some great characters and they explained a great deal. This book has different emotions such as delight and fury. This book kept me interested, and I want to read more of Holt's books.- - Megan Merchen

I think it is an interesting book. It teaches you how to act around people who might be fat or extrmely obese( 625 lbs.). It talks about divorce and death and how to handle those situations. I liked it!!!

I read this book because my friend recommended it to me. At first it seemed like the plot of this book is pretty unique. Not many books have sideshow acts as main characters.
In the beginning, Zachary Beaver comes to a small town in Texas for a few days. Soon, Toby, the main character, tries to befriend Zachary. They don't hit it off at first, but do after a couple chapters. I think there are many stereotypes in this book about some of the townspeople.
It was a pretty good book because the main idea of the story is good, but it has no definite beginning, middle and end. You should read this book, if you want something to relax you and has a happy ending.

When I read the book, i could relate to it in a lot of ways. I live in a very small town and nothing ever happens. You can't see the whole town from a bowling ally but it is really small. Also, when somebody new or different comes to town, people kind of treat them differently than they would others. In the book people didn't like zachary that much because he is over wieght. Most people these days look down on kids and adults like that because they don't look normal. i really enjoyed this book because it is different.

I am an avid reader and have read many books. This is one of the worst books I have read. It is boring and has no meaning, in my opinion. My friend who also reads about 8 hours a week also thought it very dull. I do like the other authors books though. This just must not have been her best.

I liked this book because it has a good plot and its about a boy that doesnt fit in and how two friends befriend him and give him a good time while people make fun of him and are jerks to him and how he overcomes that. And they have a good time in a place in Antler, Texas and I like how they are nice to each other and not mean I like that because I see people at school being mean and this book is kinda the same but kinda different and I like that. That is why I gave this book a good rating.

This is one of the best books I have ever listened to. Kimberly Holt took me back to my childhood and told me a wonderful story. Will Patton is the best. He does not just read a book. He tells a story along with a very talented author

No way is this book just for people 9-12! I'm 15 and its one of the best books I've ever read. Its so moving and gives you a great sense of love and friendship. Its sort of like The "Mitford" series for a younger generation. So I really hope there is a sequel! It would also make a fantastic movie! Its the first book I honestly could never put down, and I can't wait to read it again. You MUST read this book, you'll never forget it. :o)

The book was very good. I liked it. I liked the way it was told by the young man named Toby. I enjoyed the way the story and the tail about Zachary beaver. It was interesting how Zachary fell in love with Cal's (Toby's best friend) sister .I thought the "Lady Bug Waltz" (When Toby and his father put lady bugs on to the garden to eat the bad bugs) was a cool idea. I thought it gave great emphasis to the story when Cal's brother Wayne died in the Vietnam War.

In my opinion this book was alright. At some parts in the biginning it was some what boring but towards the end it got really exciting and very good, i couldnt put the book down. I would recomend the book for anyone who wants a good book with a good message in it. I would recommend this book for kids ages 10 to 13 or maybe 14. The voacbulary was alittle low for me becouse I am 14 but i still found it a good book.

"When Zachary Beaver Comes to Town" the two principal boys, Cal and Toby, are at first a little taken aback at seeing "the world's fattest boy," then they move to a fascination, and eventually to friendship. This is a book that can teach younger readers tolerance - something lacking in the world of today. It is also a good read for children and adults alike!

There is no room to doubt that this book more than deserved the 1999 National Book Award. Holt's quirky but lovable characters and beautiful imagery make this a book not quickly forgotten. This book is about friendship, loss, life, love and everything that connects them. For adults who revelled in Billie Letts' WHERE THE HEART IS, this book rings with the same poignancy and life-affirming spirit.

I had to buy this book for a children's literature class that I am taking at the University of Texas at San Antonio, we needed to read a book by Kimberly Willis-Holt, whom I will be meeting October 30. I am really glad that I chose this book, it is an easy read and great to read to a young audience.

When Zachary beaver came to town is a suspenseful story with a lot of conflict. Problems heat up when the world's fattest boy, Zachary, comes to town. It all starts with the rising action when a trailer in parked in a parking lot with a sign saying 2 dollars to see the world's fattest boy. Main characters Toby and Cal are excited because nothing cool happens in boring Antler, Texas.
The climax is when Toby, Cal and Scarletts little sister go inside the trailer and Tara peas her pants. The falling action is when everybody finds out the truth about Zachary's weight. The Resolution is that Toby, Cal, and Zachary become friends.
I enjoyed reading this book because I can relate to Zachary because people make fun of us about our weight. If you like high suspense stories, Then this book is for you.

The part I hate the most was when something happened to Cal's brother.
My favorite part was when Zachary got baptized.
I didn't like the book because it didn't have hardly any action, it's too boring, and too sad. It was nothing but talk, it was slow and too pitiful. It was disappointing and low rated. They hardly did anything big. It was too hart breaking.
