My book club picked out this book, I read it, and I thought it was pretty good. It's about two princesses, one king, a sorcerer, a dragon, and last, but not least, Drualt. Addie, one of the two princesses, was afraid of just about everything, but she wanted to see a fairy. Meryl, the other princess, wanted to seek out the cure for Gray Death, but she got it instead.
I'm a boy, and I thought it was a good story. My favorite character was Drualt because he was called the laugher and I like to laugh at people when they're being silly. Although Drualt and I laugh for different reasons, we both like to laugh. There was a lot of great action in the story. On Addie's journey to find the cure for the Gray Death she receives things from her friends and family like a magic tablecloth, two maps, magic boots, and Blood Biter, a sword, to help her on her journey.
This story will keep you interested because you will want to find out what will happen to Addy. If you want to find out more, then you'll need to read the book.

This book is one of the best books I have read this year. It is about two princesses, Addie and Meryl, who live in Bamarre. Meryl is the brave, adventurous girl who loves sword-play, and Addie is the demure, quiet princess who is afraid of spiders. The two princesses often talk about what they would do if Addie got the Gray Death. Meryl would go out and battle dragons to find the cure.
But the roles get switched: Meryl gets sick instead and Addie must find the cure. Using a few gifts from a sorcerer, Rhys, and an elf, Milton, Addie-who-is-afraid-of-spiders goes out into the dangerous countryside to find the cure before it is too late.
Addie battles ogres, specters, dragons and many more wild animals. At one time, she has to entertain a dragon or get eaten.
This story's theme is courage and perseverance. Princess Addie was afraid of spiders and now she goes on this dangerous quest to save her sister from dying.Addie could have easily given up. But she stuck to her goal and became brave.
This book is great because the author made me feel that I was right next to Addie when she went on her adventures. The author described it well and the plot was good, which made it an awesome read!
I would recommend this book to the people who like fantasy or liked Ella Enchanted.

The Two Princesses of Bamarre is a book I enjoyed, and I doubt I will ever find another one like it. I laughed and cried when I read it. Gail Carson Levine has done it again with this story of love, fantasy, and self-discovery as well as sword fights and battles.
The two princesses of Bamarre couldn't be more different. Princess Addie is fearful and shy. She has always longed for safety. Princess Meryl is courageous and brave. Her deepest wish is to save the kingdom of Bamarre. They are sisters and they mean the world to each other. But just when Addie feels most content, disaster strikes and Addie sets out on a perilous journey. But she must face ogres, specters, gryphons, dragons and even her own fears. Addie must battle them, but time is running out, and the sister's lives-and Bamarre's fate- hang in the balance.
I give this book five stars, and recommend it to people who want a book about swordfighting, fantasy, love, dragons, monsters, fairies, miracles, ogres and adventures.

I have read a lot of Gail Carson Levine's books, and after Ella Enchanted, I like this one best. The book is about two princesses of the kingdom Bamarre. They are very different -- Princess Addie is fearful and shy; Princess Meryl is bold and brave. Meryl always wants to go on adventures, but Addie doesn't like it when she does. Addie makes Meyrl promise that she won't go on adventures until Addie gets married. Dispite their differences they mean the world to each other. Then Meryl is stricken with the worst sickness ever know -- The Grey Death. Addie, terrified and unprepared, goes on a quest to find the cure. She must battle many different monsters who are in her path. Plus, she has to get back in time to save Meyrl, who's life is dropping by the day...
I have to say that Gail Carson Levine really makes a fairy tale good! This book has scary, amusing, and even romantic parts. I reccomend this book to everyone who would like to read a really good fairy tale.

This book was very good. It was about Addie and her sister Meryl. Addie, meek and cowardly, always expected Meryl, strong and brave, to take care of her. That is, until she comes down with the Gray Death. Now Addie must break forth and find the cure to save her beloved sister. Luckily she has the help of the sorcerer Rhys, seven-leauge boots, a magical tablecloth, a cloak, a spyglass, and a sword. But when a dragon takes her not only does her weopons seem useless but it is a true test of her courage.
This book was about a coward finding her bravery. It was full of adventure and drama as well as comedy. Now you're wondering why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. The ending was very predictable. You know from the start how it's going to end. The begining was slow at the begining and Addie didn't have to face as many obsticals as I thought she would have. If you like suspense in a novel. This one isn't right for you. But is you like fantasy and good conquering evil then I recommend this book.

Perfect for younger readers, "The Two Princesses of Bamarre" is a cute story about shy, reserved Addie trying to save her strong, outgoing sister Meryl from the Grey Death. Addie's character development is obvious but moving. The ending was somewhat unexpected.
I recommend this for younger readers because the plot devices and cliches are very obvious to older ones; the lesson in the novel - try things outside your comfort zone - is great, but older readers may tire of its repetitiveness.

Sixteen-year-old Addie and her sister Meryl are the two daughters of the king of Bamarre, a magical kingdom. Years ago, they lost their mother to the Gray Death, a horrible disease that strikes suddenly and with no hope of recovery. Now brave, adventurous Meryl hopes to grow up to have great adventures and, most especially, to find a cure for the Gray Death. Unlike her older sister, shy Addie is timid and afraid. Yet it is Meryl who falls ill with the Gray Death. When their father does little to help Meryl, Addie decides that although she may never be brave, she must do all she can to save the sister who always swore she would be the one to become a hero. With the help of Rhys, a young sorcerer, Addie sets out on her quest, which will take her through forests of specters and ogres, across rivers and deserts, and to the lair of a deadly dragon. Addie must summon every ounce of courage within herself if she is to save her sister and her kingdom before it is too late. This was a wonderful fantasy novel. Although born to be timid, shy, and fearful, Addie was a character with hidden strengths that her love for her sister was able to bring out in her. I highly reccomend this book.

The Two Princesses of Bamarre by Gail Carlson Levine is a thrilling novel about two young princesses. Ever since birth Addie and Maryl, the two princesses have been close, close sisters. They live in the castle of Bamarre. Addie has always been the shy sister and Maryl just the complete opposite, adventurous! When Maryl has come down with the cureless, life threatening illness called, the gray death Addie must test her limits. Addie can't sit their and watch her beloved sister die. She must go and find the cure, which lies hidden outside the bamarrian land. I personally love this authors writing style because it keeps you thrilled the whole time. This is why I loved this book. It is a GREAT fantasy read because it is so exciting the whole book long. This book can in some ways be related to Harry Potter. If you like an exciting and thrilling fantasy read you'll love The Two Princesses of Bamarre!

Dragons, castles, princesses, and sorcerers. Oh my!!! If you like all these things and adventures you should read The Two Princesses of Bamarre by Gail Carson Levine, published by Scholastic Inc.in 2001.
This book is about two princesses that live in a castle in Bamarre.
Myrel gets the Gray Death and Addie [the scared one] tries to go out and find the cure. On her way she meets all kinds of things like dragons, specters ,and gryphons.
An exciting part of the book is towards the end of the book. It's when Addie and some people she met are battling ogres and only one person dies. Throughout the battle Addie was always yelling, "Victory for Bamarre!". This book might make you cry. Then when you think that Myrel died, there's a surprise twist!
On a scale of 1-10 for the rating of this book I would give it a 9 because it really is a good book. But some of it is confusing.

Her sister Meryl is strong, stubborn and brave. Meryl's life mission is to one day find the cure for the grey death, a plague that kills people very quickly. Addie only wishes to stay safe inside her palace but her wish is not granted. When her sister is sticken with the grey death she knows she has to do something. But when this something turns out to be leaving her home and finding the cure, facing specters and dragons she finds it hard to deal. Even with the help of a sorceror. Can she save her sister? Or will she be too timid to follow through.
I found this book to be very impressive. It was entertaining to see Addie's transfomration through the book from timid little sister, to something more. I reccomend it to fans of Levine's 1st book Ella Enchanted. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. The only complaint I has was some parts where a tad bit predictable. Other than that it was great. Enjoy!

After writing a Newbery Honor-winning book called Ella Enchanted, Gail Carson Levine has done it again in this excellent tale! Gail Carson Levine writes of two princesses who live in Bamarre. One of the princesses is Addie (Adeline) who is shy and fearful and her sister, Meryl is brave and bold. They had made a promise that when Addie is married and safe, Meryl could begin her adventures through the world. Unfortunately, after Addie's chambermaid Trina and their mother had caught the Gray Death disease and died, Meryl is sick with it as well. Addie gathers all her courage to seek the cure to save her sister with the gifts she recieve from the young sorceror Rhys and her friends. Addie takes her seven-leagues boots and her spyglass left by her mother and the enchanted tablecloth and cloak from Rhys also with a some shy love. Addie begins her dangerous adventure meeting tricky spectors, a clever interesting dragon, and many more creatures. Also adding a bit of romance for Addie and a magical ending. Any fans of magical creatures and princesses will fall in love with this book!!

When Meryle becomes deathly ill with the Gray Death, its up to Addie to find the cure and fufill a prophesy. Batling ogers, dragons, specters and gryphoons, shy Addie finds out she is braver than she thought. Along the way a sorcerer helps her, while capturing her heart. Through a powerful spyglass Addie wathces her sister become sicker every day, but never looses hope. Can she find a cure in time? How will Addie escape the many dangers that befall her? I can only tell you to read this absolutly wonderful book. I read it all in one day because I couldn't put it down! I only regret finishing it so soon because I would have liked the adventure to go on forever.

Although many people didn't like this book, I found it very exciting. The main characters may not be completley realistic, but that's why I liked them. Princess Addie was scared of everything until her sister was dying. Then she found courage. That made her realistic to me. Her romance with Rhys was something that I found a nice touch to the book. Although at the end, it might have made her less childlike. You could tell that there would be a romance since the first mention of Rhys. Her father, the king, was very annoying, and one of the only things about the story that I didn't like. I really liked the stanzas of the poem Drualt scattered throughout the story. In conclusion, this book was both exciting and touching, since Addie gives up her fears to save Meryl. I really liked it and will be expecting many more stories from Gail Carson Levine.

It all started with a promise. Princes Addie and prices Meryl are very close sisters but couldn't be any more different. Princes Meryl is very brave and wants to fight dragons while her sister Addie would like nothing better than to stay in her nice safe castle and do her embroidery. But when a terrible sickness comes to the castle and over comes one of the sisters, the other must go on a quest and find the cure to the Greydeath that could end the sisters lives.
I really loved this book. It's about two sisters , and I couln't help but think of my sister and me. I know I would fight an army of orgars to save her , and I know she would do the same for me.
I think anyone who has sibblings thay are close to, should read this book. If you like drama and romance you mite want to read this book.

I wished for another fantasy novel done by Gail Carson Levine {after reading "Ella Enchanted"}and it came true. This is a wonderfully done novel! Except their is only one thing that displeases me, although some may disagree, is the ending {don't worry I won't spoil it for those who havn't read it yet}. It was a fabulous and creative way to end and wrap it up. So what am I complaining about? It was just that I didn't like how she made it turn out. I would of prefered MORE of a 'happily ever after' ending. That's just my opinion. But anyways, I definitely reccomend this book to everyone who has or hasn't read "Ella Enchanted". It's a must read for any fantasy book lovers! If you liked this book check out Gail Carson Levine's 'The Princess Tales Series'.

Addie and Meryl were interesting characters, though I have to say I liked Addie much better from the beginning, and Rhys was an interesting character. Levine's sense of humour comes out in this nicely, as in the case of Addie trying to operate Seven League Boots. The Gray Death was an interesting disease, and I thought the progression of it to be original. I also enjoyed the dragon's character.
I had two real problems with the novel. First, Rhys' magic seemed too convenient some of the time, and when it was absent, the absence, too, seemed rather contrived. Second, the ending was the quintessential deus ex machina ending. It honestly didn't surprise me, but it certainly didn't delight me.
_Ella Enchanted_ was a far better novel, and a better place to start reading Levine. After that, move on to this book. On a side note, once you've spent time with Levine's Ella, you might want to try _Just Ella_ by Margaret Peterson Haddix.

A deep and philosophical Levine weaves this enchanting tale of the two princesses of Bamarre; best friends and literary foils. As different as they are, they have formed the perfect sibling relationship in which they can work to together to use their strengths and weaknesses. Meryl, brave and adventurous, is the leader of the group and Addie is timid and kind one. But when the deadly grey death comes to grasp their homeland and claims Meryl's health, the shy and unobtrusive Addie is devastated and forces herself to find a cure while her sister becomes worse. Addie's adventures are original, exciting and will keep readers on their toes every moment.
This book is Levine at her very best. She combines love, romance, loyalty, and over-coming the fears we have to the ultimate level. This is one of the best books I have ever read, no question. -Lia

What a good tween classic. This is a staple of the "Goose Girl" and "Princess Academy" days.
I very much admire the ending which is technically a "happy ending" (because honestly a sad ending would be unacceptable!) but still doesn't allow everyone to skip merrily away without sacrifice.

Gail Carson Levine returns in another fantasy just as good as her beloved newberry winning Ella Enchanted! In the Two Princesses of Bamarre Levine writes of two princess sisters who are just the opposite of eachother. Addie is shy, quiet, and afraid of spiders. Meryl is strongwilled, brave, and loud.
The male lead character is Rhys a beginner sorcerer who Addie has secret feelings for.
The story begins as the Gray Death, the most feared disease among all the citizens of Barmarre strikes Meryl. Addie can't bear to see Meryl die for there is no cure. She is frustrated that her cowardly father isn't brave enough to go and find a cure for her sister. So she sets out on a secret mission with tools given to her by her sister, the physician,Rhys, and her mother she sets out on a journey that she will always remember. Inspired by her hero, Drault, Addie encounters beasts, orges, sepctors, and the Dragon Volley whom her sister Meryl had wished to slay. Addie using advice from Rhys manages to get the cure out of Volleys. However she is trapped in Volleys den and time is running out for Addie!
This book was very enchanting. You would never be able to guess the ending. I think that was the best part of the book for it was really very creative and again enchanting!!

The Two Princesses of Bamarre is an adventurous fantasy written by Gail Carson
Levine, a Newbery Award winning author. Other books written by Levine are Ella Enchanted, The Wish, and The Princess Tales series.
Addie and Meryl are two princess sisters. Addie is very timid and Meryl is very brave. But when Meryl gets the gray death, which is a very bad sickness, Addie, as timid as she is, goes on a long and dangerous journey to find the cure.
The author of The Two Princess of Bamarre is a great writer because she uses descriptive words in her writing. I think this book is worth reading because of the great adventure and bravery and I hope people will enjoy reading it.

When I heard that Levine had written a new book I eagerly bought it the fist moment I possibly could. Ella Enchanted is one of my favorite books that I can just read over and over so I thought TTPOB would be just as delightful. The book was really too stereotypical with the brave hero sister (Meryl) and the cowardly sister (Addie). Hmmmmm... who do you think comes out of her shell and saves the day? The book itself is a fast and somewhat esay read, but the characters where not that original and didn't seem to jump out as real people as in Ella Enchanted and I'm sure we've all heard the same plot a thousand times (cowardly girl becomes brave and saves everyone... blah blah blah) I'll give the book some credit in that TTPOB still held Levine's magical fantasy touch at some points, but at the same time was gray and sketchy. Another reviewer said that there was no asking why things were the way they are and I totally agree. Unfortunatly this book does not deliver and I suggest that you read Ella Enchanted or even The Wish instead of The Two Pincesses of Bamarre and if you still want to read it, pick up a copy at the library. Don't be fooled by all the 5 star ratings that plaster the front TTPOB page.

The Two Princesses of Bamarre is about two completely different princesses. The older one, Meryl, is courageous, brave and valiant, always wanting to fight dangerous creatures, such as: Vollys the dragon, specters, monsters, and even ogres! The other one, Addie, is the opposite. She is afraid of everything, starting with spiders, and will not let Meryl leave her side until she is happily wed. One day, the most terrible thing happens. Meryl was sick with the Gray Death, the most feared illness of them all. Many hundreds die of it every year. Addie, inspired by Drualt, her hero, realizes that she must go find the cure, to save her beloved sister and lots of others. Along with the help of her friend Rhys, the young sorcerer and many gifts from Bella and her late mother, she sets out on her quest. She comes across ogres, dragons, specters and many other dangers. Will Addie be able to save her sister? Will she survive? What will become of Rhys? What will become of Meryl? You'll have to read the book to find out! I recommend this book to children ages 9 and up. I rate it five stars because it's the best book in the world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am a big fan of fantasy books, and I think I can safely say this has always been one of my favorites.
I fell in love with it the first time I read it about 5 years ago and have read it again a few times since then, and I still really enjoy it! I think it was just as good as Ella Enchanted and would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants a good read! The plot moves quickly, but Levine still takes the time to create beautiful images of the world that Addie and her sister live in. While a few questions remain unanswered, I think this is part of the "magic" of the book; it leaves you to imagine your own solutions.
Ever since I first heard they were making a movie of Ella Enchanted, I hoped that they would make a movie of this book, and Addie has been one of my dream roles ever since! I think a movie would be awesome, and I've heard rumors that it is a project being worked on. I really hope I get to be a part of it!
If you want to read an extremely enjoyable book, I encourage you to go pick up a copy of The Two Princesses of Bamarre.

Addie and Meryl are the best of sisters. While Meryl is courageous and adventurous, Addie is timid and shy. Addie looks up to her older sister and always depends on her. When Meryl falls ill with the deadly sickness, the Gray Death, Addie must overcome her fears and start on a perilous journey that leads finally to a dragon's lair. Vollys is her name, and she knows the cure. Addie somewhat "coaxes" it out of Vollys, and rushes back to tell Meryl, with the aid of Rhys, an apprentice sorcer she has grown to love. With a surprising twist for an ending, Levine makes readers flip pages with excitement. A must-read for 12-year-olds like me!

I have read everyone of Gail Carson Levine's books since Ella Enchanted came out. I've loved everyone of them to death, and they sit in a belove pile by my bed.
Ok, back to the point, I was browsing the isles of a bookstore when there it was- The two princesses of Bamarre, and I HADN'T READ IT! For the rest of the day I was glued to the couch, captivated by every word.
The two princesses of Bamarre is a story about Addie and Meryl, to sisters who are fiercly loyal to eachother, but different in every way. Meryl is shy, and likes safety. Addie wants to be in battle more than anything- I'm not going to tell you any more, but the ending is not going to be what you expect- I gaurentee it! Add this one to your summer reading list, and enjoy!

This is a great book! I loved it so much! It was a great story line, and much more creative than Ella Enchanted, and definately just as good!
Princess Addie and Princess Meryl are sisters, and best friends, very close, and they love each other completely. Meryl is brave and Addie is always frightened of everything (especially of spiders!). But then Meryl becomes sick with the Gray Death and Addie must overcome her fears to attempt to save her.
The only problem is the ending, but once you come to terms with it, you realize the book to satisfactorily end no other way!
I definately recommend The Two Princesses Of Bamarre by Gail Carson Levine!!!

OMG!!! i absolutley love this book i bought it 2 years ago but wasn't very fond of it at first so i stop in the middle. i came across it one day and decided to give it another try and i just fell in love!!!i dont care what people thought about it, yes there wasnt any adventure in the first few chapters but the beggining was quit enjoyable.i love her connection with volly's in the middle of the book. i cried and jumped and begged for more this is my all time favorite book. The ending was amazing and i balled when addie found out about meryls transformation. my favorite charecter has to be rhy's!!!he was so fasinating, kind, and lovable. i only wish he were in the story more often. and i loved reading the scattered stanzas of drault.(Gail should write the epic poem of drault,i would definitly by it)i read ella enchanted after this book and i must say, despite the fact that more people liked 'ella enchanted' more than this book, this is still my favorite book.when i read the book i was filled with so much emotion. ive read it over 6 times and i cry every time.i love this book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i loved this book. i had skipped two grades and was looking for something to read one day in the new school and i came across this book. i checked it out of the library and read it in 3 hours! it has real depth to it. i liked how addie was always afraid and meryl was always there to help her. this story is about the 2 princesses of bamarre. meryl is like addie's knite, but then meryl gets really sick with grey death. addie has to set out on an adventure to save her sister, battling ogres and dragons, those kind of things. i would tell you the ending, but it would spoil the book, so i hope i left you hanging so you will have to read this excellent novel.

The Two Princesses of Bamarre
By: Gail Carson Levine
Reviewed By: K. Kim
Period: P.5
The two young princesses of Bamarre are like the sides of a coin. Princess Meryl is a brave, courageous lady who dreams of fighting the gryphons, ogres, dragons, and specters of her country. Her goal in life is to find the cure to the Gray Death, which is a disease that carries off hundreds in Bamarre every year. None who contract the disease survive. Meryl's younger sister is Princess Adelina, or Princess Addie. She has an incredible fear of the creatures Meryl could face and laugh at, especially spiders. She shrieks when shadows fly over her, be it a bird or gryphon, and Meryl comes to comfort her. The two sisters love each other dearly, and despite their different personalities, they are best friends. Addie is fearful of Meryl's wishes for adventures, and makes her promise not to go off until Addie herself is wed. Then, the unexpected happens. Meryl is struck with the Gray Death and has troubles even standing up. Addie is panic-stricken, for she never suspected that her sister could die within the castle walls themselves. Long ago, a specter prophesized that the cure to the Gray Death would be found when cowards found courage and rain fell all over Bamarre. Addie thinks the cure may be found when her own cowardly father seeks to find the cure, but when he fails she takes matters into her own hands to save her sister. She embarks on a perilous mission to find the cure to the Gray Death, armed with magical gifts from her late mother, the seven-league boots and spyglass. A sorceror, Rhys, offers her a self-setting tablecloth, intricate maps, a cloak of darkness, and his feelings and concern for her. With strong motivation, Addie sets off to search for the legendary fairies who know the cure of the Gray Death. Time is limited, and she must travel quickly to save her sister in time. She encounters ogres, specters, gryphons, and finally the most deadly creature of Bamarre; a dragon. The dragon Vollys captures Addie and takes her to her cave, where Addie is forced to entertain the lonely and beautiful beast. As the days of Meryl's life slip away, Addie is agonized, for she can't leave the dragon's lair. Finally, she manages to escape with the knowledge of the cure. The victim of the Gray Death must drink from the magical falls of Mount Ziriat directly. Addie rushes to save her sister, but time is against them. They reach the Ziriat Falls only to be greeted by Vollys' ambush party. Meryl is not saved by the falls. However, she was on the verge of dying when the fairies of Mount Zariat offer to transform her into a fairy. She accepts, and so Addie is saddened by the fact that they can no longer live together, for Meryl has duties as a fairy. Addie and Rhys get married within the fairies castle, and so the sisters part their separate ways.
I liked this book because of its constant action. The mythical creatures in the story seemed to come to life through the details, and I felt as if I had entered Bamarre itself. The following quote describes the dragon Vollys in her slumber: "Her wings were tucked in neatly, and she lay curled into herself, with her long head resting on one of her front legs. I had seen the castle cats at home sleep just that way hundreds of time." The author gives a clear image of that sleeping dragon, and so I read this book with interest every step of the way. I also liked how the author portrayed dragons. "Her gaze, cold and clever, was probably directed at a poor deert snake. But perhaps she did see me. Dragons knew things. Perhaps they saw things. Perhaps she saw my intentions and my fear and now knew about me and Meryl." I adore dragons in every way, and when the author gives the reader an idea that dragons are superior creatures with much wisdom and power, I appreciate that.
I also liked this book because it added humor and realistic speech. Addie's cowardice is most amusing when Meryl becomes exasperated at it. " 'I have to work this out. Listen, Addie.' She [Meryl] looked up. 'If the terrain is rough and the ogres are throwing rocks, what should the knights do in defense?' 'Gallop away?' 'I should have known better than to ask you.' She bent over her notebook again." Reading this book, I was kept awake by the fresh conversations and situations. You can really get the impression that Addie and Meryl are best friends through reading the book.
My favorite part of the book was when Addie was trapped in Vollys' cave. She was held in the grasp of Vollys' tail, then deposited in the beautiful cavern. She stayed there for days, and although it made me feel squeamish that Meryl's life was steadily dropping as Addie was stuck in the dragon's lair, I felt excited about the character being near a dragon. Dragons had the knowledge of the cure to the Gray Death, and so it was very intense to read the chapters of Vollys' cave. You'd never know what could happen next. Also, the parts where Addie is stuck in the cave are the parts where people read of dragons' lonliness. They are solitary creatures, but despise being alone and enjoy humans for company. However, they soon tire of them and destroy them, but mourn for them right afterwards. I thought this interesting.
The book was a delightful read, and I'd recommend it to anyone who likes fantasy or adventure.

I love this book. Meryl and Addie are two princesses in the kingdom of Bamarre, a magical land full of dragons, spectors, ogres, sorcerers, and more. Meryl, the braver of the two sisters, has a dream to fight the evil creatures that are attacking Bamarreans until the land is safe. Addie, however, just wants to stay as far away from spiders as possible. That is, until Meryl gets the grey death. Nobody who has gotten the gray death has lived, and nobody will unless "cowards find courage and rain falls all over Bammare". Unfourtunately, Addie's cowardly father isn't much help, and it doesn't look like rain. So, while her sister is fighting the horrible grey death, Addie leaves the castle alone to find the cure for grey death. While on this great adventure, she conquers and ogre, fights gryphons, and gets past a dragon to save her sister. Time is running out, the grey death has left Meryl with only a few days left to live. With the help of a sorcerer names Rhys, some villagers, and a few fairies, this book has an amazing twist at the end. Everything about this book is perfect. (except maybe the binding on mine, but thats only because I read it so often and keep it with me on trips.) I love this book, and I know anybody in their right mind will too!

These two sisters are definitely not the same. Meryl is outgoing and always looks for adventure. She pretends to swing a sword and calls this game sword play. Addie, Meryl's sister, is shy and always tries to avoid adventure. One day Meryl promises Addie that she won't go on a quest to find a cure for the Gray Death until Addie is wed. Then a sursprise is waiting for everyone. Meryl, the sweet, wonderful Princess contracts the Gray Death. With the help of Rhys, a sorcerer, it is up to Princess Addie to face Ogres, Dragons, Gryphons and Spectors. By doing this, she may be able to save her sister so they can continue as THE TWO PRINCESSES OF BAMARRE.

Who says that men are always the heroes? Well, in this book, that doesn't really exist. Princess Addie (Adeline) was the younger sister, is shy and scared of everything. Her sister, Princess Meryl, is just the opposite. Meryl wants to go out into the world to fight gryphons, specters, ogres, and dragons. Addie, on the other hand, wants to stay home. But when Meryl gets the Grey Death, Addie and her friend Rhys, a young sorcerer, sets out to find the cure and save her sister. On the way she meets specters, gryphons, and even a dragon, which delays the brave princess. What will happen to her? Will her sister die? Read this book and find out! I like this book because it is really exciting. I just can't put it down!

The Two Princesses of Bamarre is one of the best books I have ever read! It's about two princesses, Addie and Meryl. Addie is afraid of nearly everything (even spiders!) Meryl is brave and wants to save the kingdom of Bamarre from creatures with her sword Blood Biter. Meryl get's the deadly Gray Death and it's up to fearful Addie to find a cure!
Gail Carson Levine is an amazing writer who makes all of her characters unforgitable! Trust me, this book will leave you craving for more! I reccomend it for readers 10+. Don't delay, order the Two Princesses of Bamarre by Gail Carson Levine today! You'll love it! I know I did!

I first read ella enchanted, THEN this book. both i borrowed from my friend, and both are truly great! and i mean it. Gail Levine had did one good creation that really impress me.
basically the book tells us about two princesses that have two really really different characteristics. so different that i see Addie(the little one), as one coward girl. Shes sooo afraid of spiders. save me! But then, her sister (meryl, my best character in the book. the strong girl) caught the gray death, a sickness that kills. so, addie have no choice but to travel (knowing that it brought dangerous on the way)and find the cure. as the story goes on, addie's mold into one strong girl, and finally she have the guts to defeat ogres dragons, etc. So she became my 2nd favourite character in the book. The book just brings you into one other world and spin you in it. giving vivid character and settings, this book have the ability to do that. seriously! +, it tells about rhys the sorcerer that addie falls in love with. It is soooo romantic. especially the part when rhys and addie was going to the river where her sis.... oups, i spoiled too much story. Just read it by yourself...! its soooooo good. it has a really good ending, yet we never expect, but still a happy ending. so go check it out. !!

The Two Princesses of Bamarre was about Princess Meryl and Princess Addie. Meryl is brave and coragouus, and Addie is shy and fearful. One day, Meryl comes down with the Gray Death, a disease that kills all people who have it. Princess Addie is very scared, but she sets off on a quest to find the cure for the Gray Death. She faced monsters, an evil dragon named Vollys, specters, but Addie did become braver from this quest. The ending is happy, with just one strange little twist. I thought it was very interesting, and it really held my attention. This book was awesome, just like Levine's "Princess Tales" books or "Ella Enchanted"

This book was pretty good. The pacing is good, and the characters were fun. The relationship between the sisters and between the sisters and their friends was well written. However, the reason Addie falls in love with one of those friends is not very clear or convincing in my opinion.
I did like how Addie manages to defeat most of the monsters without suddenly gaining expert swordsmanship skill (without any training)...though that sudden sword-skill does appear at the very, very end.
For those who care, there are a few kisses but no sex.

Princess Addie has lived in fear her intire life. Fear of spiders, fear of monsters, fear of just about everything. Her sister Meryl dreams of battles and quests and swords and has ever been Addie's protector and savior. However, when Meryl is struck with the dreaded sickness, the Grey Death, it is Addie who must go questing for a cure, to save her sister. Forced to face all her worst fears, Addie must discover her own inner strength and cleverness, but will her efforts be rewarded? This book was not only well written, but the characters as well spoke to me so clearly I felt as if they were real. I would definitely recomend this book to any fan of fantasy, child or adult.

I love this book. I have read it Three times over the years and i still love it. I read it first in 6th grade, and it was an ok read but i dont think i understood the sadness in it really. Then i read it again in 8th grade for this book review in school. I found that i loved it even beter the second time. Then i read it in my sophmore year at school and it is great. The way that the auther combines all these problems together. There is love, adventure, and even a little of humor, its like a little BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER. Anyways i recomend this book to almost all ages 12-120.
Other Recomendation:

Eragon

I read this book after looking at the cover. I saw it and I read the title and though it would be a good book.
I was right.
This book is about two Princesses (of Bamarre) Meryl and Addie. (I dont want to spoil the whole story away) but someone "they" love gets the "Grey Death" which is a disease that is not curable except if you find ... (read it and find out!)
So one of them goes on a quest and is faced with emotional mental and physical challenges (Especially those big monsters!)
The ending will warm your heart. :)
Overall: A definete read. This is an enchanting novel that will blow you away!

This is the story of two princesses - Addie and Meryl. Meryl, the older princess, is brave and bold. Meryl's younger sister, Addie can be fearful and timid. Meryl and Addie are best friends, and each other's favorite companions. They spend time playing games with each other. Their favorite game is the Gray Death game. In this game, Addie will pretend to catch the Gray Death, a feared disease that is guaranteed to kill of its victim. Then, Meryl will pretend to search for the cure. In the game, Meryl will find it, and bring it to Addie, who will get well again. Then, Meryl falls ill with the Gray Death, and this time it is not a game. Addie knows she must find the cure to save her sister, but to do so, she must face her greatest fears. I thought this was a beautifully written book that keeps the reader turning the pages, and I also like that this book can be unpredictable at times. This a is great, creatively written story!

I read Ella Enchanted a year or two ago (I don't keep track). I loved it. When I went to buy a new book I saw 'The Two Princesses of Bamarre' also by Gail Carson Levine. Once I started reading it, I immediatly fell in love with it and couldn't stop reading it! This book shows how even the cowardiest people can be couragous, too. It was almost my friends' birthday, and since she and I both love reading, I bought her The Two Princesses of Bamarre. She and I both think it's one of the best books ever written. So far, I've read this book 4 times and it never gets boring. That's how great this book is.

I think that Gail Carson Levine is a good author. Her books are really good. Especially 'The Two Princesses of Bamarre'. She has other good books such as The Wish, Ella Enchanted, The Fairy's Mistake, The Princess Test, etc.
This book is about two sisters who love each other. They can't get married to anyone unless Meryl the one sister gets to go on an adventure. Meryl comes down with a sickness. I can't tell you what it is called. Addie the other sister goes to look for the cure. What is it? Does she get the cure in time? Does her sister live or die? I can't tell you. You got to read the book first.Ha- Ha.
That's why I gave it 5 stars.

A timid shy sister has to face her fears so she can save her dying sister. Trolls ,dragons, griffens ,specters, and more add colorful detail to this beautiful tale. Not to mention the love of a sorcerer, but don't think this is a fluff book. No, there's plenty of action to entertain the guys. Not to mention the ironic humor placed throughout the book that creates just the right balance of fear and humor. Definately a hiding-in-your-bed-with-a-flashlight-at-10o'clock-on-a-school-night-to-finish-the-last-page-book.

If you like magical adventures, read the The Two Princesses of Bamarre. I really enjoyed this book. It's main character, Addie, is a timid princess in for a daring adventure to save her sister. She encounters ogres, specters, even a very personal dragon in her quest for the cure of her sister, Meryl's, disease.
I recommend this book to above the age of six. Sadly for boys, this book is predominately feminine. Many of the main characters are girls, like Meryl. The first-person view is appropriate for young adolescent readers. I don't recommend reading this for older women. The Two Princesses of Bamarre is a sterling book.

I read this book four years ago, and I still remember every event and plot twist that occurred within the pages and within the lives of the two princesses of Bamarre.
It is truly a tale of the rites of passage, trial and triumph, love, conquering one's fears, and humanity. I say humanity because, although much of this story is fantasy, there remains in the text social protest and messages about society. The princesses' father, for example, gives up fairly quickly regarding saving his daughter, Meryl's life from "Sir Grey Death", yet he says he loves and cares for her. Meanwhile, usually meek and timid Addie leaves the safe stone walls of the castle, searching for a cure, the love for and of her sister the only motivation for her to keep going.
There is also a modicum of romance embedded into the plot-- between the sorcerer Rhys and Addie. I find their relationship quite adorable and their discourse witty and fun. It is, in fact, their particular story that got me interested in romance novels.
Levine also offers a lot of insight and hope that even if you think you are a shadow, you too can possess and create light.
And I've carried these messages of the novel for a long time with me, and in the end, it is absolutely a magnificent experience-- almost like a memory itself, the read. Enjoy the journey!

I was really impressed by Gail Carson Levine's clever fairy-tale retellings, "Ella Enchanted" and "Fairest," so I had great hopes for "Two Princesses of Bamarre." Unfortunately, I was mostly disappointed by this book.
It's a perfectly serviceable tale, but Levine spends much of the book setting up the differences between the two Princesses (Meryl is brave and bold! Addie is meek and shy!). Neither princess really transcends stock characterdom - the brave one practices swordplay and plans heroic adventures whilst reciting some of the most heavy-handed epic poetry this side of Beowulf. The shy one does needlepoint and moons after the castle sorcerer. The clear character development of Ella Enchanted is entirely absent here.
When the action finally gets going (Meryl is stricken with a fatal disease whose pathology dictates that she will die after a very specific number of days), I thought the pace of the story would pick up, but alas the reader is treated to many more pages of the narrator ruminating on possible courses of action.
There are some excellent moments here, such as when Addie encounters the tricky spectres, when she is beset by ravenous gryphons, and when she is taken prisoner by a dragon desperate for entertainment. However, the story is constantly tripped up by the poor pacing. While interesting at first, I eventually got the feeling that Addie's imprisonment by the dragon was more a device to run out the clock than an opportunity to advance the plot or help Addie grow as a character.
It's a predictable book - Addie changes as a result of the story, but she changes exactly the way you'd expect. The romantic subplot is underdeveloped and I never really got a sense of the sorcerer beyond his magic. I'm sorry to say that his most interesting moment as a character happened when he took his shoes off. The resolution to the climax smacks of deus ex machina - after all of Addie's efforts, the Princesses' problem is ultimately solved by a higher power. Not exactly empowering.
Levine wraps up the loose ends we expect to be wrapped up, but I was left with a lot of questions. If the King (Addie and Meryl's father) is as ineffectual a character as we are led to believe, why has he not yet been deposed? Why doesn't Addie, educated as befits a princess, have a basic geographic knowledge of her kingdom? It would appear that all these girls have been taught is needlepoint, swordplay, and droning epic poetry. The kingdom seems to have a lot of different humanoid creatures (sorcerers, spectres, fairies, elves...). What is the political situation in regards to all of these different races in one kingdom? Why do the humans rule?
This book isn't a bad read, but it's not Levine's best. I suspect that kids are nowhere near as critical and nitpicky as I am plus they don't tend to use pretentious terms such as "deus ex machina" when discussing a book written for younger readers. Ultimately, this book is for them and makes me long for the days before an evil curse turned me into the kind of curmudgeon who rates fairy tales based on literary analysis.
It's best read in the ferry lineup while ignoring your little brother who is trying to convince your parents that you're on his side of the car.

In the book, The Two Princesses of Bamarre, two princess sisters, named Addie and Meryl, live in the castle of Bamarre. Meryl becomes ill with the Gray Death and her father, the king of Bamarre, trys to save her by visiting the elf queen and asking her if she knows the cure, but fails. Meryl's sister, Addie, knows that it is up to her to find the cure to not only save her sister, but all the ill citizens of Bamarre. I enjoyed reading about Princess Addie over coming her fears to save her sister. The plot was not predictable, but at some points, it was a little obvious. Gail C. Levine also as written The Wish wich is as exsiting as The Two Princesses of Bamarre.

This was my all time favorite book when I was younger. I read it in elementary school from the library, then I had my older sister buy me a copy in middle school (which I later lost TT_TT). Now I have bought this copy myself (now 21 years old) and it was so refreshing to reread something I loved so much! :) the story doesn't get old!

The Two Princesses of Bamarre is a fairy tale about two princesses--one shy, the other adventurous. The shy princess has to sally forth into strange lands to rescue her ailing sister. She overcomes many fears, realizing that she, too, can be a hero. This is a sweet story, with adventure and romance. It is appropriate for girls starting at perhaps age 10. It was not as magical as Levine's other books in this series (Ella Enchanted and Ever), but it is worth reading nonetheless.

No words can describe how much I love this book!! I have read everything by the author, Gail Carson Levine, but this book is PROBABLY my favorite of them all. The main character is a girl named Addie, who is afraid of pretty much everything, including spiders and even her own shadow!! Her sister Meryl on the other hand is brave and strong and loves swords. She dreams of battling dragons and fighting alongside her father in the war. She is Addie's hero, and they remain constantly side-by-side.
When Meryl gets sick with a fatal illness, it's up to Addie to find the remedy herself, despite the long and perilous journey (and her own fears) before it's too late for her beloved sister. A favorite of both mine AND my sister's, this book will remain forevermore on my shelf with my other favorite books, MANY of them being by Gail Carson Levine. Two thumbs up!! Well, three if I had an extra one. Enjoy!! ~Rinnie:)

What if you, as an extremly timid young lady, had to journey out in a world chock full of dragons, ogres, and other horrors to find a cure for your brave older sister's fatal disease? Scary huh? Well, that's the task Princess Addie has to face in The Two Princesses of Bamarre by Gail Carson Levine. This fantasy book is an inspirational story about overcoming you fears.
Princess Addie, or Addie as most call her, is fearful of almost everything. She rarely strays outside of the castle grounds or away from the protection of her older sister, the courageous Meryl. Meryl is stupendously brave and always there to protect and reassure her little sister. Addie has wavy brown hair, dark eyes, and a complexion to match. Through Addie's actions, you can clearly tell that she is terrified of the day her sister won't always be by her side.
In the begining of the book, the castle is where the two princesses spend their days. When Meryl becomes contaminated with a fatal disease, Addie must journey out into the world in search of the cure. A few of the places she searches are in a lively and dangerous forsest, a desolate, lonely desert, and a cowardly village. Addie must search all these places in only the time period of tweleve days.
The Gray Death is the terrible disease that Meryl is plaugued with. The Gray Death causes the infected person to grow weaker and weaker untill they fall into a deep slumber. Once in the slumber, the person sleeps for exactly nine days. Upon awakening they a stricken down with a fever that lasts three days until death. When Meryl became infected, Addie stayed at her sister's side for six days befor realizing that she must leave. Addie faces her fears and sets out on the quest to discover the cure to the Gray Death before her sister dies. She first heads to the forest where magical shape-shifting specters live, planning to question them on the cure. When they fail to reveal the secret to her, Addie decides to try the dragons. Conveniently, a dragon captures Addie and whisks Addie off to her lair in the desert. Addie manipulates the dragon to disclose the cure to her, but she still has to escape the dragon's lair and bring Meryl to a specific place to recieve the cure.
Does Addie escape from the dragon's lair? What's the cure to the horrible Gray Death? You'll have to read The Two Princesses of Bamarre to find out.
I loved The Two Princesses of Bamarre! It was a magical, suspenseful, and thrilling story with a great surprise ending. The Two Princesses of Bamarre is an especially enjoyable book for those who relish and prefer the fantasy genre.

Yes, that's right. Yet again I sat down and read a book in one sitting. (Well, actually I got up a couple times, but not for long.) I really enjoyed "The Two Princesses of Bamarre" (obviously!), although the ending was definitely, as the review up there says, bittersweet. Not quite as wonderful as "Ella Enchanted" (which was painful to put down!), but I didn't expect it to be that terrific, and it was pretty darn good. ;-) It deserves more than four stars, but it wasn't QUITE perfect, and four is as high a rating as it'll let me give it other than a five. If I could, I'd give this book four-and-a-half stars. If you love fantasy and fairy tales, I suggest you read this book!

this was an ok book. It is very wishy washy in the middle but around the 22 chapter it started to get better and more exciting and suspenciful now that meryl is dying of the disease called the Gray Death. it is killing people all over Bamarre. let me tell you the story of the 2 princesses of bamarre.[ the short version] The 2 princesses of bamarre and they are very close to each other. Addie is the weaker and more afraid one. Meryl is the braver and stronger one. Then one day Meryl gets sick with the Gray death and Addie sets out to find the cure. now when Addie has to overcome her fears and save Addie she also has to face dragons, griffons, and other mystical creatures. will addie save her life on a tight scheduele.

I bought this book in a bookfair our school had and it's amazing! The book kept me turning the pages and it has a dash of everything. Fantasy, realistic, poetry, adventure! The story line is excellent and the writing is too. I think this book is even better than Ella Enchanted which won a Newberry Award! This book is definetely the best book I've read all year. (I recommend it to readers 9 and up and you might disagree with me but i feel most girls will like this book more than boys. That's just my opinion though.)

I loved this book from the minute I found out it was by Levine...I have read her book Ella Enchanted, and vowed to read as many books written by her as I can. About this book again, it was awesome. Yet again Gail Carson Levine amazes me with her writing talent. Meryl and Addie are the two Princesses of Bamarre who love each other very, very much, but are very different. Meryl is brave and daring, but Addie is always fearful and her deepest wishes are for safety and peace. When Meryl catches Gray Death, a deadly disease, Addie must find courage and go on a dangerous quest to find the cure for gray death, which is Princess Meryl's only chance of survival. If you loved Ella Enchanted, this is a must read!

I may have been biased when I checked this book out of the library, thinking " Oh Gail Carson Levine! I love her books! " Even if you are not a fan of fantasy books, this one may get you hooked into reading more of the divine Mrs. Levine's books. They have creatures like fairies, dragons, and specters in them. This story is about two princesses who are sisters and happen to be best friends. Addie is afraid of almost everything and Meryl is brave and dreams of being a knight one day. The sisters make a pact to always stay together, no matter what. When Meryl falls ill with the Gray Death, the disease that killed the sisters' mother, Addie decides to find the cure and sets out in hope of finding it. This book will keep you on the edge of your seat until you read the very last page.

This book is an amazing book. It teaches people two very important lessons. 1) Things happen and you should try to fix them, even if they seem hard. Lives may depend on you. 2) Find the courage in you. There's courage inside everyone, you just have to find it.
I couldn't believe how great this book was. Gail Carson Levine is an amazing writer and she shows it in this book. I couldn't put it down! I just kept asking myself, "What happens next?" so I read to find out. It was one of my favorite books.

I have read the reviews of other people and I've read different views from each one. Some say it wasn't really good and others say it was the best. I must agree with the ones that say it was a great book. I really enjoyed it and it kept me wanting more and more.
The book is about two sisters that adore each other. The older one, Meryl, is the brave one that protects her younger sister Addie. Addie is fearful and shy and is afraid of everything. Meryl wants to save the kingdom of Bamarre while Addie wants to stay in the castle and be safe. Meryl promises Addie she wouldn't leave the castle until she was happily married.
Then, Meryl, catches the Gray Death. Addie never thought her sister could stay home and be killed. Thats when Addie got the courage to search for the cure herself, since her father was returning home with nothing for her sister. With the help of a special flower that gives her the heart to go on, given to her by an elf nurse; with a pair of seven-league boots that were left by her mother; with a gown that will help her leave undetected given to her by her governess; and by a cloak, table-cloth, and some maps given to her by a sorcerer she secretly has feelings for, she sets out on an adventure.
In her adventure she encounters specters, gryphons, ogres and even dragons. But then, she is caught by a dragon, and she is taken to the dragons lair. There, the dragon tells her the cure for the Gray Death. Finally, Addie escapes the dragons lair (in one piece) and races to her sister's cure. Meryl has only one more night to live so Addie must hurry.
With the help of Rhys and some villagers they manage to go to Meryls salvation. With a decleration of love and an unexpected end....
Will the sisters survive THIS battle? What will happen to Rhys? What about the villagers? What about the hero in the epic poem called Drault? What about the fairies? What about the kingdom? What about the dragon? What about the Gray Death? So many questions, only one book!
But, you'll find the answers in this wonderful tale about two sisters love and devotion for each other. They have to test their strenght against all the obstacles that come in their path. Meryl has to fight the Gray Death that is eating her life away and Addie has to fight the monsters that are trying to kill her. It is a great book with a little bit of romance and lots of adventure. If you enjoy fantasy stories this will be a great book. It'll be a little hard to put down. :)

I love this book! I have read it three times. Levine gives her characters such strong voices. Though it is a book about princesses my 10 year old son read it and he loved it as well. It speaks well for a book that adults and children can enjoy it fully -- both sexes can enjoy it. This book is as good or better than Levine's Ella Enchanted book (though that is great too). Levine's characters make courageous and good choices in life and though these are for entertaining the characters' lives are good lessons for readers. Read all of Levine's books! She is an amazing writer.

Gail Carson Levine has once again made magic with her captive storytelling in The Two Princesses of Bamarre. Harpercollins Juvenile Books(publisher) has right to be proud of this masterpiece...
I enjoyed this novel because the girls in it didn't stand around idly being, well, girly. The storyline I hate most is where one girl is beautiful and proud of it, while the ugly heroine wishes she were pretty to and ends up proving herself by killing a monster or performing some other sort of amazing feat. In this version, the brave and fair Princess Meryl plans to conquer all of the monsters in Bamarre and find the cure to a terrible disease called the Gray Death. Shy, less attractive Princess Addie's role in their plans is to fall sick with the Gray Death and for Meryl to find the cure just in time to save her. Things flip-flop when Meryl contracts the Gray Death and Addie is forced to fight gryphons, specters, dragons, and ogres on her way of finding the cure. The end is also different than most. et a copy of this book today. Not tomorrow, today.
The Two Princesses of Bamarre is a well-loved novel, not unlike many of Levine's other works. Get to the library today, and check out The Two Princesses of Bamarre by Gail Carson Levine copyrighted 2001 by Harpercollins Juvenile Books. Any fantasy lover will be entranced by this great tale of two sisters in ungainly circumstances.

The Two Princesses of Bamerre is my favourite book I ever read... yes, even more than Harry Potter, more than The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings! It is about 2 princesses named Addy and Meryl. Meryl has always been the brave one and Addy the scared one, but one day Meryl gets the Grey Death. Addy goes looking for the cure and meets some things that she doesn't want to on the way; a troll, a spector and a dragon. The book has a veeeery unexpected ending. You'll LOVE it!!!

This book is one of the best books I have read. The way Levine draws you into the story is amazing. To me, this is every girl's dream. Living in a mid-evil world, where there are dragons, princesses, elves, dwarfs... who knows what adventure could take place next. The story of the heoric Princess Meryl falling a victim to the Gray Death and the shy, but brave Princess Addie was extremely inspirational. I find that I am very much like Addie, that my deepest wish is for safety. Though the thought of going on a perilous quest would frighten almost anybody, as it would be to me, I also think it would be exciting. The suspense brings you even closer to the characters. You pray that Addie will find the cure to save her sister. You wish so hard that she finds her way back to Bamarre, and that Addie's highest hopes don't go down the drain. If you've ever found yourself afraid to take a stand, remember Addie, and how she was determined to do whatever it took to keep her sister alive. Let's not forget the handsome sorcerer, Rhys. If you read this book, you'll find out just how big a part he plays in saving Meryl. I praise Levine for her excellent writing skills, and I hope she keeps writing books as extraordinary as this one has been. Happy Reading!!

Well, I read *Ella Enchanted* and I loved it very much. I heard about this book from a friend on day and I decided to buy it. To put it lightly, I didn't like it. Meryl was the stereotype princess: Oh, gosh, be a princess what a bore! I want to go be the heroine! And then there was the main character: Oh, I don't want to! I'm even afraid of spiders! -Oh please!- I kept thinking. And then there was that interesting love between the wizard and the main character. It was to put it nicely- bland and stupid, not like the Char and Ella romance. The characters were very forgettable. Borrow it from the libray, don't waste your money.

After reading Ella Enchanted, I was excited to discover Two Princesses of Bamarre. When I had struggled through chapter after tedious chapter, I wished I hadn't. The story is bland, and the characters seem even more so. I'll stick with Ella…

i read this book all in 1 day. its the type of book where you keep reading and just can't stop! i would reccommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading fantasy. the story is about 2 princesses. Andeline, and Meryl. Meryl is sick with the grey death, which has been said that there is no cure. Addy, as she is called, is the only one who can do something to save her sister. with the help of Rhys, a sorcerer. a Fun Fantasy, and Romance for all ages!

This book wasn't all that great. Yeah sure, it had adventure, excitement and romance, all the things I love to read about when I pick up a book. But in this book, the adventure part was boring. The 'excitement' wasn't exciting. The romance part wasn't romantic. And really who cares about what Bamarre's hero did? I didn't like it. If Addie had gotten sick and Meryl was the main character, I might have liked it more. But probably not. I especially didn't want Addie to fall in love with or marry Rye. I didn't like him at all. And you can't even tell they're in love until the very end. Whenever I read romance books, I like those little tiny hints that make you totally see that they'll fall for each other. I think Addie needed someone to fall in love with to make it more interesting, and the only person that could be was Rye. This book was BORING!

Slaying dragons and fighting of evil spirits called specters. Killing ogres and gryphons. Who would have thought that all of this would have been done by a princess, one who excells at embroidery. When Addie's brave sister catches a fatal didease, the Gray Death, shy and meek Addie must go and try to find the cure for this mysteriuos sickness. This is where her adventure begins.
This book is an amazing recipe of love, courage and sadness. As you read it, you feel drawn into the characters, and begin to feel their emotions along with them. You agree with their thoughts and actions, and vivid pictures of the story begin to flash through your mind. Levine creates a wonderful texture that is almost touchable. It makes you feel that if you turn the page before you have completely soaked up the story, then you will break your special connection with what's going on inside of the book. This made it wonderful to read.
I'm very pleased that I found such a wonderful book, full of my favorite things. Fantasy, love, and happiness. I'm sure that everyone who reads it will be amazed as I was.

I absolutely love this book! I got it for the first time when I was probably about twelve (i'm 18 now), and I've probably read it about fifty times since. It's one of those books that every once in a while you realize you don't remember ever last detail and that you absolutely must go read it again. The fascinating way it's crafted around an epic poem captivates me. The best part of her beautifuly written fantasy world is that, although I found plenty to like when I was younger, I find even more to like now. It's not something I grew out of, and it's wonderful! I would reccomend it to absolutely anybody!

The Two Princesses of Bamarre is a wonderful book placed in a midevil setting. It is about a princess named Addie who goes on a quest for a disease that haunts her whole kingdom. Her sister falls ill with the Gray Death and Addie must journey on a dangerous quest, conquering her fear of spiders, ogres, dragons, griphins, specters, and many other beasts. This is a great book that everyone will not want to miss out on(it's not girly).

I've read two other books by Levine (Ella Enchanted and The Wish) and enjoyed both, but this book actually feels like a pain. I think that the lead character is the princess who is more cowardly instead of the braver one is a great idea, and the inclusion of the epic hero is definitely amusing, but other than those two and maybe a couple more, there's hardly any reason to recommend this book.
It feels like the author rushes through things; she moves from a problem to a problem before any feels complete. The rest of the characters (other than the main ones) comes off as kind of weak. And I'm pretty sure we could make do without the falling-in-love subplot, which is really not plausible, important as the marriage is to another subplot.
So yeah, I'd recommend Levine's two other books I've read, but not this one.

This is a wonderful book. Somebody said that the romances were unrealistic, but I don't think so. Addie was friends with Rhys, and you have to be friends with your spouce. So what's so unrealistic? I read this book to my dad and he also thought it was good. It is about an unlikely herorine named Addie. She goes on a quest to find the cure for the gray death to save her sister, Meryl. A wonderful book!

This book twisted my imagination and kespt me waiting for every new maigical spark. This book started with 2 sisters who had always been extremely close. Addie, shy, fearful of spiders, but with a work of magical embroidery and Myrel the broad outgoing adventouress girl with her blood biter sword. The two princesses of Bamarre would not leave eachother until Addie was wed. When Myrell caught the dangeoures gray death Addie decided to departon an adventure to fiind the gray death cure. She was ready to take on Ogars Spectors gryphons spiders and even a firefill dragon Volleys. Nothing was going to stop her from finding the cure before her sister died after 9 days of sleep and three days of fever. On her journey she uncovers one of hearts deepest desires, the love for the castles young sourcerer Rhys.
An adventurouse love sroey with a mgical ending with a surprising beautiful twist.

I won't bother explaining the plot (lots of other reviews do that),but i'd just like to say that i loved how this book shows how addie conquers her fears to save her sister, and i LOVED the ending. The perfect gift for the serious 10 year old who you know will look deep into the book.
Meryl promisies her sister Addie that she will not persue her dream of fighting monsters to find the cure for the Gray Death until after Addie is happily wed. However, when Meryl gets the Gray Death, Addie feels guilty that Meryl will have not fought one thing. Addie, the timid sister who always relied on her brave and spunky sister Meryl, sets out on a quest to find the cure to the Gray Death.
As Addie fights dragons and gryphons, she discovers the spunkiness and wittyness inside herself, while falling in love with a sorcerer.
There are the typical fantasy-book things, cloaks of invisibility, etc, but this is a very deep and moving book, to me at least, and even has some scary parts.
I read it again and again and never tire of it, especially with the surprise ending.
Enjoy my daughter's favorite book.

The book Two Princesses of Bamarre starts out great. One princess, Princess Meryl, plans to someday rid her land of evil and have wonderful adventures. Her sister Addie is frightened of manythings, and finds comfort in Meryl. But when Meryl catches the Gray death, an illness whose victoms waste away in weariness, her plans seem dashed. No one has ever caughten the Gray death and lived, and no one will until (as an old poem says) "The timid find courage and rain falls over all Bamarre." Princess Addie is fearful of many thing, but she is even more afraid of losing her sister, so she sets off, with gifts from friends, to find the cure of the Gray Death herself. After some adventure, she is caught by a dragon, and taken back to its cave. Dragons know many things, but Addie at first cannot persuade the dragon to tell her the secret, and she cannot escape. From inside the cave, Addie looks home to Meryl through her magic spyglass and sees that she has entered the second stage of the Gray Death, a deep slumber. Meryl only has 12 more days to live.
I thought this was a good book, but I was dissapointed in the ending. In the end, the girls can no longer be sisters, and one will out live the other. This is why I have only given it four stars, I do not think the ending was very good.

This wasn't such a bad novel, and I kind of enjoyed it. Not great, but easy to read and the story chugs along briskly. However, the ending really killed it for me. It's too unnecessarily long. Once the major conflict is resolved, the story is over and yet we must hear a treatise on what it means to be a faerie and the price paid and the virtue of love and heroism and blah blah blah. I wish I'd just put the book down after the rain because I would've left with a feeling of at least entertainment. But after reading on and realizing that there were no further complications, only pages of explanations, I just lost much of my enthusiasm for the book. Would've been three stars if it'd just known when to end.

After going through trolls, a dragon, dangerous creatures and obstacle couses she had found out that not a formula could cure the Grey Death ones courage can cure the Grey Death. When she safely returned her sister was cured and she was to marry. Before her sister had promised that she would stay by her side until Addie had married. Now since she had Meryl will take a journey of her dreams. This passionate and promising book of fantasy will definately surprise you!

Two Princesses of Bamarre by Gail Carson Levine has been a favorite book of mine since childhood. While the plot is at times predictable, the characters are easy to relate to and may stay with you after the novel is over. The plot is a straightforward one: a tale of overcoming fear in order to save a beloved sister and a journey of self-discovery. Along the way, Adelina, the heroine, is helped through the efforts of her good friends: her governess, Bella, and her dear friend, Rhys the sorcerer. As a plus, this book also has a shy romance as a subplot.
All in all, I recommend this book to all, but try to appreciate it for what it is and not focus too much on what it is not. A great book for those pre-teen years and for re-reading years later.

This book is about two sisters, Addie and Meryl, who couldn't be more different. Addie shy and fearful. Her deepest wish is for safety. Meryl bold and brave. Her deepest wish is to save the kingdom af Bamarre. But Meryl becomes sick with the Gray Death. Now Addie must face her fears and take on her sisters adventures for her. The perilous quest for the cure to save her sister, whom she holds so dear to her heart.
I thought this book had a wonderful plot with very intersting and charming characters, one of Levine's finest books. I recommend The Two Princesses of Bamarre and all of Levine's books to anyone who loves a good fantasy and I hope you can enjoy them half as much as i did.

OH!!! I just loved this book! Its about to princess sisters who love each other very, very much. One is brave and loves sowrd play and wishes to save Bamarre, and hopes to be a hero. The other is shy and is scared of everything, but loves to sew.
There is a horrible sickness flowing arownd the kastel, and Myrel (the barve sister) Catches it! Addi (the shy princess) must find a way to save her be loved sister, Myreel.
I garentee that if you love romace, you'll love this book.[....]

Although characterized by the same lively prose that made Ella Enchanted such a delight, Gail Carson Levine's newest, The Two Princesses of Bamarre is unfortunately seriously flawed. It remains a quick, readable fantasy, but often fails to hold up under scrutiny.
The basic premise of the book is a flip flop of the traditional heroine found in fantasy novels-- you know, the one who is invariably impetuous, brave, handy with a sword, and ready to cut down any monsters that stand in her path. Addie is altogether different (she's even good at embroidery), but although it is nice to have a less courageous heroine, she never comes alive for me as a real person. Her sister Meryl, who does fit the stereotypical heroine, is even less convincing. Quite honestly, my favorite character in the novel is the dragon, who with her moral ambiguity-- first roasting her prisoners out of boredom and then regretting their deaths and remembering them fondly forever afterwards-- is actually the most realistic and well-rounded character.
The characters, however, are not the major problem. The most severe failing of The Two Princesses of Bamarre, particularly as it is written as an epic high fantasy with dragons and fairies and sorcerers, is its continual failure to ask *why* things are the way they are. Why do specters persist in misleading humans? Haven't they got anything better to do? Why do they have to prophesy when commanded? Why did the fairies stop interacting with humans, particularly given their need in the plague? Why does the Gray Death choose the victims it does? Does it consciously choose? How is it spread? Why is the king such a coward? (He is characterized throughout only by his cowardliness, which misses a great opportunity for an interesting three dimensional character.) Little questions that I didn't think about until I finished the book and realized that nothing is explained; everything just *is.* Patricia C. Wrede uses many of the same steretypical elements in her Enchanted Forest Chronicles (dragons, princesses, sorcerers) more successfully because of her ironic tone: she mocks fantasy conventions where Levine tries to follow them without really expanding or explaining very much. A pity, since she did such a good job in lending plausibility to the story of Cinderella.
The Two Princesses of Bamarre also suffers from a sudden and rather incongruous ending, two seriously unconvincing romances, and some fairly unsubtle messages about the various forms of heroism. However, to make up somewhat for its shortcomings, the plot moves quickly, and the lore about the sorcerers is particularly creative. There's also a bit of humor as Addie contemplates the difficulties that might be had in attempting to extract an invisible splinter obtained from an invisible table and the dangers of traveling with seven league boots (dangerous road blocks, for one). But it all still remains a little shallow, a little generic.
Probably a good coming-of-age choice for younger fantasy readers who may not be bothered by the lack of plausibility, but better choices for those who like their high fantasy well doused with wit include Lloyd Alexander's Chronicles of Prydain, Vivian Vande Velde's A Hidden Magic, and Patricia Wrede's Enchanted Forest Chronicles.

i just read the book and i couldn't stop, i read for 3 hours straight. it's just so intriguing. Addie shows that when you are deeply motivated you can accomplish things you don't even know you can. Risking her life Addie trys to save her sister while falling in love with a sorcerer named Rhys. you just can't not read this book!!!!!!!!!!!

This is probably my favorite Gail Carson Levine book, next to Ella Enchanted. Princess Addie goes on a quest to save her sister and along the way she falls in love with the sorcerer, Rhys; battles dragons; and finds inner strength. The end is very surprising (but not in a bad way.)
Recommended for lovers of fairy tales.

I read this I would say about five years ago. I thought it was really good. I loved the romance, the adventure, and the wonderful ending. It's very much of a girly fairy tale book, but still enjoyable. I loved when Addie and Rye fell
in love.

Ella Enchanted.

This story is about two sisters who are as different as night and day. One is brave and one is afraid of everything. Till one day disater strikes and one sister must brave dragons, scepters, grhpons, and ogres. I love the sense of wit and adventure in this book. It has alot of character but I dislike the ending.

A good book to provide a pleasant distraction from studying. Yes, it was a bit predictable but that's really what I wanted right now. One criticism - why is it when women go on quests, especially ones who are learning to be strong, they are not allowed to fulfill their quest on their own? Why must they always receive help from various male characters?

I think that this book would be great for girls of all ages. With a little bit of fantasy, adventure, and romance it is a sure winner. Please give this book a try I am sure you will think it is a wonderful book.

I've re-read this book dozens of times, each time more happy with it than the last. You have to be able to stomach the fairy tale aspect of the story, magic and dragons included, but it came easily to me, and I adored the story and characters.
It plays a lot on sisterhood, and revolves around a timid girl facing her every fear, a heroine you can't help but to root for.
All-in-all, it's not a life-changing read, but it is a wonderful, quick, and fast-paced one that you will find yourself picking up again and again.

The Two Princesses of Bamarre is a book of excitement, depth, and adventure. Fearful, and shy Princess Addie goes on an adventure to find a cure for a fatal plague her sister has caught. It is an adventure he sister has wanted to go on for years and now she must reluctantly take on her dream.
I didn't like this book. The adventure was boring and predictable and the characters were stale. Princess Addie is at first portrayed as a shy, innocent little princess. I felt she was self-centered. She keeps her sister from going out and exploring the world for Addie's own protection and comfort and all she does is make beautiful tapestries or something. Then, at the end of the book she is suddenly strong and brave. She changed way too quickly. In Ella enchanted, I felt such pity for her and wanted her to fight through any struggle she had. Whether it was verbal abuse from finishing school, her stepsisters, or the voyage back home. Here, I just didn't care.
I also didn't like the love story. She falls in love with a sorcerer, another character who got on my nerves. Addie refuses to admit her love for him out loud (another sign of conceitedness.) In fact, I had no idea she loves him until the end of the book - I thought it was just a little crush they had. In fact, the book rarely ever discusses their relationship. Maybe about 4 or 5 pages through out the book in total. I didn't understand why they would love each other. In Ella Enchanted, I knew why Prince Char and Ella loved each other and always enjoyed reading about it.
In spite of my negative review, however, I definitely don't recommend you limit yourself to reading this book. I know Levine worked hard on it and you should see
for yourself if you like it or not.

This book was fantastic! Its about two sisters who have a weird father and a dead mother. All of the sudden the bravest sister gets the grey death{a plague which usually results in death] and the sister who lets a tiny spider to make her twitch has to go and find a cure. Does she find the cure? does she get back ALIVE??? this wonderful book will have you reading constantly. A funny, romantic, story about a coward going and facing her fears. A MUST READ!!!

It drove me crazy that time was ticking away and it seemed impossible that Addie could save her sister. But maybe I am just too impatient. I couldn't read all of the section about being kept prisoner by the dragon because I have claustrophobia.
Also, I didn't like the ending but objectively, it was a fitting one.

My daughter absolutely loved this story. We purchased the audiocassette and soon thereafter purchased the book. My daughter has listened to this story well over five times and she has read and re-read the book. The story is very well read by Lynn Redgrave. Redgrave made each character come alive with distinctly different voices and tones(a trait many audio-book performers can not do well). My wife and I have also listened to this story several times in the car without the daughter. One shortcoming -- no CD version of this audio book. A real bummer when we purchased a new car with only a CD player.

There are a lot of Tolkein clones and steryotyped fantasy writers in this world, but you can be sure Gail Carson Levine is not one of them. When the country of Bamarre is struck by a deathy plauge, the two completely different sisters, one almost-cowardly-but-not-quite and the other a would-be-hero decide to do something about it... but things don't work out quite as planned....

After the rave reviews this book got at the store.com, I bought it and was expecting nothing short of the next JK Rowling. I was dissapointed. I found the characters a bit flat, the two princesses a bit dense, and the lore of the land superficial. The character I related to most was killed (a dragon) for no good reason. The king is the most irritating character I have encounter for a while. Someone should have assasinated him. I struggled to finish it. The book has absolulty no humor in it. Zero. An unnecessary grim depiction of a fantasy land. This books charm completely eluded me.

Princess Addie's older sister, Meryl is adventurous and brave and aspires to be a warrior woman. Meanwhile, Princess Addie is as deeply afraid of Meryl leaving her as she is of spiders. Tragically, Meryl contracts the dreaded and fatal Gray Death, wherein Addie finds the courage to face dragons, specters, and ogres to find the cure. Along the way, she falls in love with the court sorcerer Rhys, and--of course--finds her own abilities and powers through her love for her sister. Levine writes a good story, weaving clichéd fantasy creatures and situations into a unique tale of sisterly bonds and tragic diseases. It's well written and emotionally true and powerful, and almost never predictable. Grade: B+

This is a very good book, I could'nt put it down! When I finished this book I wanted more. Though it was a very sad ending, if you read it you would love it too, it's a must read! Another book by Gail Carson Levine Is Ella Enchanted

I got this book on a Friday and finished it that Sunday! On Monday, I took it to school to read it over again, and that was all I could talk about with my friends when I wasn't reading! I would DEFINATELY recommend this book! Gail Carson Levine kept me interested through the whole book!

I was looking forward to reading this book at lot. When I got it I read it in about two days. It was a really good book but I was very disapointed by the ending. You'll have to read it and find out what happens, (i recomend it) but dont get your hopes up.
