☀️ ? very inspiring and realistic and encouraging. ? ? ?. I especially appreciate the idea that we can re-start and re-boot and re-introduce the expectations and modeling, etc at any time.

Great book! Michael is the best. His plan works for not just specialist teachers but for all teachers. He is a true master of the craft of classroom management. As a teacher,I feel I have excellent classroom management already. As a matter of fact, my district hires me to teacher classroom management to new teachers in a workshop a few times a year, and I have also been nominated for Teacher of the Year on a local tv station. My purpose isn't to make myself look good, but to show that I still learn a lot from Michael. I read his books and blogs. His blogs are at " smartclassroom management.com" and are amazing. It works. Do yourself a favor get this book and used right away

This book was a fantastic read and really made me put my classroom and what I'm doing in it into perspective. I'm very happy I purchased this book and can't wait to put what I've learned into practice.

Finally, a book for us specialists! Although there are many wonderful books for educators out there, it is difficult to find one that addresses the issues that resource or specialist teachers encounter on a daily basis. Thank you!

This book is so well written and fun to read. I've read other books written by Michael and felt the same way. His strategies work! I'm so grateful for his passion and willingness to share his secrets:)

Rarely do books speak specifically to the problems of being a "cluster teacher" or "specialist." Often our unique circumstances are overlooked or we are marginalized as part time instructors. This book provides real and practical tips to help those teachers that deal with several classes a day, hundreds of students a week. Rules, procedures, tips, and practical advice this book was even presented to me by an administrator. (After I had read it twice, of course.) I recommend it.

This book outlines the common mistakes that many specialist teachers make, especially during their primary years as an educator. The solutions are tried and true, simple, respectful of students, and always encourage the educator to create the ideal learning environment.

Although the words art and music come before PE, this author has no experience teaching art or music. The title is clearly meant to be a marketing tool, and since there are very few books out there that address art teaching, it suckered me in. What is contained in this book, if you are an experienced teacher, is not new - mostly basic common sense. Also, it assumes "once a week" meeting with students and in this day and age that rarely happens. Secondary art, music and pe classes meet daily, and few elementary schools still have consistent offerings of at least art and music. For someone who has not been in the classroom yet and has not read much classroom management literature, it might be useful, but there are no specific methods relating to the unique problems that art and music teachers face with our use of materials and instruments.

I thought I had found a solution to the problems that are unique to teachers of specials. I did not. Aside from identifying how schools and students view these teachers, which was accurate, it never explained why. The recommendations were textbook 101 welcome to teaching.

This book literally saved my music teaching career! I was on the verge of quitting because I could not control of an entire private elementary school of unruly, spoiled children. This book, and its very simple approach to classroom management puts the responsibility of behavior back on the children and they respond so well to how fair and direct the rules and consequences are. Last week was my best week teaching at this new school, I remained calm and actually enjoyed teaching again. Thank you, Michael Linsin, for your very easy approach to classroom management. Now I look forward to all the work I can finally achieve with my students.

Highly recommend this book for new and experienced teachers. Michael Linsin offers some excellent ideas for developing a sound and effective behavior management plan for the "special" curriculum classes. The suggestions he offers come from his experience as a PE teacher and are easily adaptable to other classrooms.

This book has many useful ideas and strategies that can be used in any related arts classroom. However, I work in an inner city Title 1 school, and these strategies do not always work perfectly. I definitely have some new ideas that I have started using in my classroom this year though, so it is still worth a read.

Hands down, the best, most practical book on managing students for "specials" teacher! I have made so many of the mistakes mentioned, that I didn't need to be convinced that there really is a better way to handle classroom management in the art room.

Finally, a book on classroom management that takes into account the unique challenges that art, music and PE teachers face, especially when you see them only once or twice a week. Fast read packed with ideas honed from years of experience.

I was disappointed in the book. The writer repeats himself to death, spends a lot of time referring back and forth through the book, and makes a lot of assumptions about home classroom teachers. I immediately bought another book after this to make me feel better. For reference, I am an art education major in college.

As a veteran art teacher, I would give this book a B-. It definitely reflects Michael Linsin's brilliance as a gifted educator, but it does not specifically serve those of us who teach art as well as it could have if Mr. Linsin had interviewed master art teachers when planning his book. He based these musings on his own experience as a P.E. teacher, so he understands what it is like to teach hundreds of children per week, however! This book is well worth reading, but I would recommend that any teacher read Dream Class, first, and sift through Mr. Linsin's hundreds of articles at his website; smartclassroommanagement.com. These articles are absolutely priceless, and the author takes the time to answer questions from anybody - he is a treasure, committed to helping teachers everywhere with classroom management difficulties.

Let me admit that I went about this all wrong: I read Michael Linsin’s "Classroom Management for Art, Music, and P.E. Teachers" before I read his "Dream Class: How To Transform Any Group Of Students Into The Class You've Always Wanted." I turned to "Classroom Management for Art, Music, and P.E. Teachers" when I was facing teaching Spanish in an elementary school after having spent the previous 14 years — my entire career — teaching high school.
Linsin’s book is pretty short, but it gives related-arts teachers the skills they need to manage students they see only once or twice a week. It doesn’t have any particular advice for teachers on a cart (like me), but it’s still got plenty of good ideas to use.

I read this book for free through a Kindle Unlimited trial. It is a quick and easy read.I am an elementary Media Specialist and I think it is excellent. I use many of the techniques already and I think that I have good classroom management. It is always helpful to hear what others are doing successfully. There are a few things that the author discourages that I practice. In fact, "Give Me Five" is a schoolwide standard in my building. I may quietly try his technique to see if it works for me. I have been recommending his website newsletter to teachers for years now.

I like this book a lot because it gives practical advice. Some books are too theoretical and just focus on building relationship, empathy, etc., which of course, are important. But this books gives quick and direct advice, e.g. games you can play, and when to play them to prevent problems from occurring in the first place.
The situations described are specific to "specials' classes. I really don't like the term specials - they are part of children's core education.
The author is also very reflective in that he talks about the teacher's demeanor, their observation of their body language and that of the students, and how to respond if their body language is already telling you some information.

Outstanding advice from a true expert who has really walked in the shoes of the special area teacher. Has helped me reassess my approach and refresh and improve my daily practice. Helping me to avoid all the pitfalls that lead to frustration and stress in my classroom. Helping me to rebuild a consistently positive rapport with my classes all day and all week!

This was he best classroom management book I have came across. It makes me want to get back in the gym and get going. The things I have now put into place have greatly impacted my students and created and excitement around gym class.

Written by a primary PE teacher, read by a secondary art teacher, this book was relatable, professional, concise and clear in its content. I am looking forward to instilling the classroom practices in my own classes. I have received more direction on class management from this text than any I have read thus far. While the read was so very clear in objective I feel no need to read again except for delight, which I can imagine again and again.

A well-organized and meaty book with real, usable advice to set the tone with specialty classes. The reader learns to manage behavior in such a way that students become responsible for their own success while the teacher role shifts easily to that of the calm and impartial enforcer. Perfect advice applicable not only to my K-8 computer and library classes, but also at home with my children. Highly recommended!

Very helpful manual for new and experienced teachers of specialized classes. Many classroom management books are geared toward elementary classrooms and the strategies are not as useful for the Art, PE, and Music classrooms; This has simple strategies that can get your students on board for learning quickly!

When people refer to classroom management, it always seemed like this vague concept that no one could really explain. This book provided a clear step by step description of what do and how to do it. I was feeling very defeated and hopeless about my tougher classes but now I have the tools and newfound confidence to go in there and do what I need to do to regain control and enjoy teaching again!

I've worked as a specialist teacher for some years and have tried a variety of approaches to classroom management with varying degrees of success. This author shines a light on some obvious, but critical differences that specialist teachers (and their students) experience compared with classroom teachers, and how those differences call for a different approach. For specialists this book is well worth it. It may seem slim at first, but the beauty of the approach is in it's simplicity and clarity. Many of the author's observations and advice are also applicable to all teachers. The more I practice with Linsin's style, the better his book seems. Next year I might give it 5 stars.

I really enjoyed this book. Refreshingly back-to-basics approach. Easy to digest truth about classroom management. Wonderful reminder of basic principles that as busy teachers we tend to let go in the hectic work day.

I've only begun to start using these techniques, but I am over the moon excited with results from only 2 days of trying. Just the fact that I don't feel so run down, stressed, and depleted at the end of the day after using these techniques is amazing.
