I have to start out this review by explaining exactly what a three star rating means. It means I liked this book. I LIKED it. I do not give this rating as a negative rating. I don't really have that many negative things to say about this story. I did like it. I just didn't love it. And for a Chicagoland Vampire story I normally feel quite a bit more love for the story. Still, I have no regrets for buying and reading this story. It is an entertaining one.

The things I liked in this book:

Merit. Merit is such a wonderful first person narrator for these stories. She is funny, with a dry sense of humor that always makes me smile if it doesn't make me laugh outright. She is strong enough to hold her own as house sentinel and girlfriend of Ethan, but she has enough insecurities and issues that she seems real and relatable. There may not have been a lot going on in this story, but Merit made every single scene and conversation come alive through her great insight and comments.

Ethan. Sigh. Love him and his suave manners and excellent battle speeches. He has fallen into a comfortable role as Merit's boyfriend (but that word doesn't quite fit him). He knows just what to say and what to do at just the right time. An excellent Master for Cadogan House.

All of the secondary characters. The entire team of players in these stories always adds to the overall enjoyment. Each are enjoyable additions who add just a touch of background to the story without overpowering it.

And now ... what kept me from LOVING the story:

The plot. It was a nice enough plot. It was. It just wasn't enough to get my heart pumping. It read a lot like a mystery novel, which was good. But the sense of danger was muted enough that I never felt an urgency to know what would happen next. I never felt a huge drive to discover the "bad guy." It wasn't a bad story, but without a little extra oomph to drive it I could only say that it was good, not great. And there were several things going on in the plot ... so many things that I felt as if some of the things did not get the time that was needed to fully flesh them out. There could have been a lot more discussion about the desire that some vamps have to become human again, although I have a feeling that this is going to become more of an issue in upcoming books in the series. I wanted to know a bit more about Jonah and the RG. The whole RG angle was there but kind of dropped compared to previous books. Mallory's return to the fold could have used more story time. And then there is a major event involving the GP that is almost dropped until the very end. Like I say, there were a lot of things going on, and more time needed to be spent on all of them.

The villain. There is a good villain in this story. But he does not come out until the very end. He isn't enough of a presence in the story to create any interest. I didn't have any time to worry about him or try to understand his motives. He just conveniently pops up at the end. I would have liked more time to digest him as a character. It would have made him more menacing or confusing or something. Something was needed to drive the plot more, and a greater presence from a villain, even if it was just a nameless/faceless person to fear or discover would have been better.

The ending. I guess you could say that there was a cliff hanger. But as far as cliff hangers go, it was a pretty weak one. Instead it felt like the book just ended. It just ended. I would have almost preferred the event at the end to just wait until the next book to be revealed. There could have been a super sweet romantic event to close this one, and then book nine could have begun with the rug being pulled out from under Merit and Ethan. Oh well.

However, like I say, despite the things that kept me from loving this book, there is so much to like that I can still recommend it as a good book to continue the Chicagoland Vampires story. I am excited to see what happens next with this great group of vampires and their compatriots. Three stars. I liked it.

I agree Biting Bad was really a "filler", almost nothing important happens, the mystery solving was no mystery at all, lots of running around for nothing, etc... In addition, twice Merit got her butt kicked by some regular random bad guys! Really?! way to go Sentinel! Ethan on the other hand, proves why he is Master of his house and really is the hero in this book.
We do get a good amount of Ethan and Merit time, very sweet! It was nice to see how more stable their relationship have become.

I loved House Rules so much, I really didn't think this one would be half as good. But it really was, as someone who liked the series a lot in the first couple of books and grew to absolutely LOVE them throughout the series, she just keeps getting better!

A MUST READ for CLV fans, and vampire genre fans. And a great way to make someone get into the genre. There is no other paranormal series about vamps that I love like this one. In fact, it's one of the only two I can stand to read (the other being Jeaniene Frost's NH series)

Biting bad is definitely a great addition to the Chicagoland Vampires series. It showed how much Ethan and Merit have grown and their relationship is so much stronger that helped them tackled all the challenges thrown their way. I also enjoyed reading about the other characters in this book rather than just a glance. This book has demonstrated that the Chicagoland Vampires Novel is coming to a full circle. Thank you Chloe!!!

This is without a doubt one of my favorite series. Merit is awesome! I love all the little eccentricities that make her a unique and interesting character. And Ethan is just plain sexy. Although Chloe Neill is not a particularly graphic writer when it comes to love scenes, Ethan and Merit together is sigh worthy. All the secondary characters are great too. Any of them could have a spinoff series and I would be all over it!

3.5 stars. Well whaddaya know, seems CN found a way to return the story and the characters I love to me in a way I surprisingly actually liked this time. I've been a little blah on the last few bks. Biting Bad featured my favorite side characters Catcher/Mallory (THANK YOU CN - have missed this magical couple), along with Luc/Lindsey, Jeff and Chuck with a tiny bit more spark to Ethan/Merit's relationship this time. No there's no "hotness" factor like there was in the beginning for our Liege/Sentinel, and no detailed sex scenes, but at least their relationship finally took on some romance since Ethan was returned to us. And get this...Ethan was even downright frisky a time or two. I finally felt secure that, thankfully, Ethan/Merit are together to stay, in love and have a future ahead (phew!)

Guess I just can't get no satisfaction though. I both do and mostly don't appreciate the repetition of the background in each bk. Seems if you left all the explanations out the bk would be a third shorter which is kind of annoying. Due to the wait between bks though, one never has to guess at what went on before. Not that I should be surprised, evidently this is just CN's style as each bk in this series has been that way. Guess I'll just have to deal.

The McKetrick focused storyline was interesting as it progress the series along but by no means a WOW. All came to a conclusion, but CN gives us a sort of "to be continued' ending. Ethan causes the House repercussions by the GP and it seems we'll find out in the next bk what all that entails. I'm wondering since bk 9/Wild Things will focus on "The Pack" if we'll finally get an answer to that mysterious "child" we've all been wondering about for so many bks. I'll be waiting.

Chloe has done it again in spectacular style. The latest instalment in the Chicagoland vampire series hit the mark head on. The lives of the house vampires continue to blur, the G P continues to interfere and the love between Merit and Ethan gets stronger. I love this book as I have all the books in this series and await with excitement the further escapes of Merit, Ethan,Jonah and crew. Thanks Chloe and continue to keep us guessing.

Chloe Neill has given us a Merit valued reading experience. I adore this series and Biting Cold has lost none of the Cadogen Vampire glamour. My one wish is to see the Sentinel responsible for the saving rather than just being on-site and being saved by everyone else. She's got the kick ass attitude and clothes, we need to see her moves in the next one. All in all it's well written and like coming home to old friends. Can't wait for the next.

There seemed to be an aspect of this story missing. I enjoyed the story, but not as much Chloe Neill's earlier Chicagoland's. The story was fast paced and intense but the details and character interactions seemed rushed. There was very little progression in this story. It almost seems like this is a connector novel. It is very worth reading. But I have a feeling this particular novel was tying loose ends and setting up for a more exciting adventure that will be on the level of Neill's previous novels.

The Chicagoland vampire series is one of the few that seems to get better, gaining momentum, rather than fizzling out as the series progresses. This may be one of my favorite stories, focusing a lot on the politics of the vampires, the GP, and the Masters of the houses. Well done, and a great addition to the storyline.

I love this series. This one, as usual, didn't disappoint. Romance, witty conversations, humor, action, love, a moving plot all add up to a great read. Oh, Ethan, the more you are with Merit, the hotter you become. So happy to have the awesome conversations between merit and Mallory back. Love Luc and Lyndsey! Merit, I wish we were friends.

Just when things are getting tame another challenge brings the Cadogan House to the fore again. Merit definitely has her hands full in this one, but never fear all of her friends are there to help. Reading this series is like watching Merit grow up and you can't help but get involved with her and her likely and unlikely friends.

Yet another home run by Ms. Neill. I tried to parcel out the chapters to make the read take more time but it just wouldn't work. I finished it far too soon with a feeling I need the next book immediately even though I know it's not possible. Read this one! Read them all! Write the author and ask her to write faster!

I anxiously await every new Chicago vampire novel. They never disappoint . I love this one. The characters are better and better. I recommend all of the books. It is very hard to put them down once you start reading. So, if you start one of the movels, make time to read straight through to the end.

I love vampire novels and these are great! Terrific character development, great story lines. I have read all of the series to date and look forward to reading them once again.

I love a strong female protagonist....and a man who loves his female (even if it takes him a while to figure it out)!!

I love the series but this book was a little disappointing. Ethan needs to fire Merit as House Sentinel. She keeps getting her butt kick by HUMANS. Ethan has to keep coming to her rescue. She is suppose to be protecting him. In this book I don't recognize Merit at all. She seems more human than vampire. Please in the next book bring The Real Merit back. Didn't like this wimpy Merit. The plot was great.

Wonderful. The authoress has certainly improver her style and verbal
banter. I even shed a tear at on point, and that's not my usual thing. Chloe Neill
Is evolving in a good way. It's certainly an adult fantasy, but in a good way. Read it you'll love it.

This was good but could have been better the whole series is based in Chicago but not a Chicago that someone born and raised there would recognize. A lot of the slang used is just not from Chicago. This last book in describing the weather I never saw the phrase lake effect snow, or the Hawk is out (slang from WWII not modern), Neighborhood names are used but the author has not spent more than a day in real time there. I remember riding on the bus through New town and watching a man in a clear vinyl 3 piece suit with fishnet underwear walk down the street, of course this was in the 70's. Andersonville, Rodger's Park, Back of the Yards,Uptown, Goldcoast, Lincoln Park, and Hyde Park, and Brickyard and other old neighborhoods are not mentioned as well as things like upper Wacker drive and lower Wacker drive the EL and the CTA is also ignored. How about a river dyed green for St Paddy's day or some old fashion Polish thrown in. The Author needs a proof reader from Chi Town.

Chloe Neill has done it again. A fantastic read that I recommend to all fans of fantasy. Once again we find Merit right smack dab in the middle of all things supernatural drama... with chaos breaking out in Chicago. You find Merit and Ethan tracking down the reason behind the new obstacles in place. All while trying to balance family, Valentines day, and tricky relationships. I cannot wait for next book due in February.

The details in this book, like all the others offers the reader to create the movie in their head as they read. Dearth Sullivan only gets better with time and Merit's humanity stays true to her. Loved the Bond references too!

2.5 stars. This installment was slow and rather dull. Not much happened, and Merit seemed to have a human-like inability to defend herself when most needed. So much for being named Sentinel.

The mystery of the bombings wasn't all that interesting, and the GP's shenanigans were almost laughable. Merit begins to heal her friendship with Mallory, and her relationship with Ethan is now stable, but that makes for dull reading. (Frankly, I never thought she should have been with Ethan to begin with.)

Is it time for this series to end? I'm thinking the answer is yes unless Ms Neill can breathe new life into a series that has become rather stale.

Another solid novel, one that I couldn't put down. In a way, this particular novel captured the journey that had been built up until this point. With some facets of the story closing, new ones are glistening on the horizon. I am again thrilled to know that Merit's journey is not over but has barely just begun.

Two words.... Money Penny.... Merit has been busy people. Busy, I tell ya! This was a good story, I enjoyed it but the mess with the GP is a little overdone.

With that said...

Merit didn't seem to have enjoyed the battles before her. Though, I can't blame her. There are riots, pandemonium and a basket full of crazy to deal with. When Merit and Mallory - who she is trying to get back into being friends with - get stuck in a mob of rioters, well life gets interesting. The good thing is Merit is given a loaner car by Gabe - our favorite pack leader - that she falls in love with. The story around the car is crazy funny. Just saying.

But with that said, the rioters are freaking nuts man, and attacking houses, and facilities around Chicago and it's a ball of cray cray. With a lot of investigations, crimes against vampires and one unforgivable harsh act taken against Merit's grandpa, Chuck, stuff goes from red light bad to off the charts bad.

It's up to Merit, Ethan, and the band of misfits (Catcher, Mallory and Jeff) to fight the battle and make sure the one responsible for this all goes down. And goes Down hard.

Just when the Cadogan vampires get one run in with the GP out of the way things in Chicago start to heat up thanks to a new anti-vampire group that has sprung up out of nowhere. The group are trying to spread fear amongst the human population by causing riots but they are also using the mass hysteria as a cover for the attacks they have planned on important vampire resources in the city. They start with the Blood4You factory but quickly moving on to target Grey House leaving the vampire population facing both food and housing shortages. The GP aren't done with their threats either and rather than focus on helping the vampires from Grey House they're too busy trying to make life difficult for Ethan. Cadogan House may have walked away from the GP but they would never leave Chicago vampires unprotected and willingly open their doors to the homeless Grey House members but that only causes even more friction. It's up to Merit and her Red Guard partner Jonah to figure out who is behind the attacks before the situation escalates and puts even more lives at risk but can they resolve things without more bloodshed?

I love this series and I'm really pleased to see how far Merit and Ethan have come since the first book. Their relationship has had plenty of ups and downs but we finally seem to be at a point where they are able to trust in each other and talk through their problems rather than bicker and fight with each other. As much as I enjoyed the push and pull of their earlier interactions it now feels like they're a steady couple and it's easy to believe that they'll make it for the long haul. They still have fantastic chemistry and Merit isn't afraid to speak up when she thinks Ethan is in the wrong but he respects her for that and knows she will always do her best for Cadogan House. Merit has been through so much since the first book and I've loved seeing her grow into a kick ass warrior, I have to say I like the fact that even though she is strong she isn't invulnerable though. She does make mistakes and she can be hurt so she needs to know that the other guards have her back.

I was happy to see that Jonah has started to move on from his crush on Merit, as much as I loved his character I was worried for a while that there might be a love triangle thrown into the mix and I'm glad that this isn't the case. I'm also pleased to see that Mallory has continued to make amends to both Merit and Catcher for her previous actions. It'll take a long time before any of them fully trust her again but she's making steps in the right direction which is good news for everyone concerned. She still has the potential to go off the rails but I'm hoping she's put the worst of it behind her now and is ready to move onto a more positive phase of her life.

There is a lot going on in Biting Bad and I really enjoyed the investigation into the riots and the attacks on the Chicago vampires. While there is plenty of action I think this story was probably a little more focused on Merit and Ethan's relationship and there is a lot of set up going on for future books in the series which makes this seem a little slower paced at times. I don't mean that in a bad way though and there is still plenty of the humour that I expect from these stories. After that cliffhanger ending I'm definitely looking forward to seeing how things play out in the next book too.

*Do not read if you haven't read the previous books*

Cadogan House just can not seem to catch a break. When supernaturals aren't after them, the city once again turns on them. Violent riots, protests and no more reason than they just don't like vampires. I personally don't deal well with racism and intolerance, so I certainly understand the anger from the vampires in these situations. The vampires have been there longer than most people, they pay their taxes and help trying to solve supernatural problems. Chicago is also their city and they do not plan on leaving anytime soon, certainly not when they went through all that trouble with the GP to save their house.

I also don't like how it somehow always comes to Merit and Cadogan house to save the city. The other two houses prefer to keep a lower profile, but I don't see the gratitude towards Cadogan for always stepping in and therefore the other houses can keep that low profile. Though now through circumstances Grey house is forced to step forward. While they're helping it's still mostly Jonah who aides. Things between him and Ethan are not quite peaceful, but they accept each others qualities and usefulness.

So once again Merit and her merry men are trying to keep the city save. What they eventually find out what is going on, well it isn't good for vampires. It's something they didn't think was possible. Having that threat coming from humans, means they have to be careful to not create a big scandal. Luckily things between Merit and Ethan are really well. Even between Merit and Malory things are slowly getting better. Broken trust needs its time to repair.

I really like this series, though by now I am having difficulties writing different reviews when I pretty much feel the same about the stories. Somehow I have the feeling something big is going to happen or at least I hope is going to happen. Slowly things are becoming the same each time to me. There is still progress in the plot and characters, but it feels way less than in the beginning.

I can't believe that I have just finished book 8 in the Chicagoland Vampire series by Chloe Neill. There is only one more to go before I am caught up. The series has over all been very good. This latest release had a slower feel to it, the pace and action, building slowly over time, till by the end I couldn't believe where they ended up. I will say that if I hadn't had the next book ready to go, I would have been upset about the bit of cliffhanger ending.

Merit, the Sentinel of Cadagon House, has been slowly becoming more confident and sure in her position of the last eight books. Even though she was turned to save her life, it was without her permission. When she found out that her father played a part in the attack and subsequent save, she is beyond upset with him. Merit has continued to wonder and wish certain days that she could go back to her human existence. What happens at the end of this book, finally allows Merit to decide once and for all, just who she wants to be.

The were some very interesting scenes in this book. Merit faces down rioters, takes Sullivan home for dinner with her parents, there's a fight with the GP on the front lawn, battling a burning building and even an uber-romantic Valentine's moment. Merit once again ends up in the thick of things, proving that she is the go-to girl for investigating the supernatural problems of Chicago.

This book wrapped up some things from previous books, but opened up a whole host more issues for the upcoming books. The overall story line has been well thought out and I continue to adore the secondary characters that are vital to keeping the story moving, although I think the author was a giant tease with giving us basic instructions on making that flourless chocolate torte with raspberry chocolate ganache glaze, but not sharing the recipe! And the worst part? We didn't even get to listen to Merit eating any of it either. I cry foul! Overall, I liked the slow build, with tension rising until the big finish. It was a nice change of pace and gave the book a different feel, helping with the idea that the story will be moving in a new direction. A 4 star read.

It took me some time to get into this book, but once I did, I couldn't put it down.

The Good
You all probably know by now how much I love Chloe Neill. She has a way of creating these characters that stay with you days and weeks after reading the last page. She finds a great balance of action, mystery, paranormal, and romance in her books that we expect in excellent urban fantasies. Biting Bad was another good addiction to the Chicagoland Vampires Series because it had all the elements to keep me reading.

Merit is finally in a good place with Ethan, but now she has to worry about the anti-vamp mobs trying to run out (or kill) all the vampires in the city. Merit does a great job of keeping her cool through all the vampire hate in Biting Bad. I've always loved her ability to focus and think through the problems in front of her. She knows how to utilize connections and doesn't leave a stoned unturned. Merit has always been resourceful, and now she has 100% support from Ethan, which makes things run so much smoother. Even Merit's attitude has changed. She is still snarky and fun, but she now has this air of maturity and optimism. I love the direction Merit is going.

Ethan is at his finest in Biting Bad. He is finally someone I can respect. He still has that "oldness" to him with being a very old vampire and all, but you can tell he is finally starting to enjoy life, even amongst all the drama. He has so many responsibilities, but Merit helps him have fun and enjoy the little things. She keeps him "human" and young. Ethan also becomes a pretty awesome badass with his sexy vengeance and smooth dealings with Merit's family. I really love his turnaround.

As always, we get peeks of the lives of the rest of the crew. Mallory is really doing good and I can finally see a positive outlook on her future. Merit's grandpa goes through some things that surprised and scared me, but I loved it. The GP are as horrible as ever. Oh, their arrogance knows no bounds. I am getting so annoyed with them getting away with so much crap. But some of the good vamps really fight back this time around which made me happy.

Chloe's writing, as always, was great. She knows her way around some engaging and witty dialogue. Everything flowed really well. I loved the ending, with a tiny bit of a cliffhanger. I love the direction with all the characters, which is rare for any book I read. Can't wait for the next installment.

The Bad
I really, really had a hard time getting into this book in the beginning. It took me two days to read 70 pages. It was somewhat slow and boring. But one-third the way in, it started taking off.

Also, I didn't get as excited while reading this book compared to the others in the series. The storyline wasn't spectacular, just good.

The Snuggly
With Ethan and Merit finally together, we get to enjoy watching them in lovers mode. They are so cute together. No fighting, just love and support. We also get a hint at where their relationship is going. I feel like these two are finally settled. No more big drama like the other books. At least, I hope so.

There is sex scenes but they are so not detailed and often cut short that they are almost YA. Definite sexual tension throughout though.

Final Thoughts
Though Biting Bad wasn't as good for me compared to the other books in the series, it was still very enjoyable. The characters kept me reading. The little twists and turns had me genuinely surprised. Very Recommended.

Quotes
“Once upon a time, I tried to have dinner with my best friend, and the apocalypse happened.”

“You’re at the stage where good intentions meet crappy abilities. Welcome to my first eleven months as a vampire.”

“You’ve only been a vampire for ten months.”

“My point exactly.”

"Anything I need to know before we go in there? Is she a black belt in martial arts? Does she carry a crossbow? Is Buffy the Vampire Slayer her personal savior?"

"Because that would bum you out?"

"The slaying part would, yeah. Not the Joss part. We all love Joss.

Freaking cliffhangers. Damn lucky I have the next one waiting for me at work, otherwise I would be one ticked off reader… The book was a little slow for me to get into, but that was mainly due to outside influences rather than the book being bad. This was actually an action packed contribution to this long-standing series. I loved the movement in the McKetrick plot line, somehow I still think we probably haven’t seen the last of him. We also had a lot of development with the GP and was thrilled to see one its members get what they deserved.

Was shocked about what happen with Merit’s Grandfather and am suspicious of her father, although the scene with Merit’s family including Ethan was a lot of fun. I also have high hopes for Mallory’s future and he being a productive member of this society. There is also some hints to Merit and Ethan’s relationship taking a next step. Not sure how I feel about it. I think they are fine how they are, no need to change what isn’t broke. Then again a big marriage might be fun and a good setting for lots of vampire drama.

One more book and then I need to take a break from the series. Think it is about time anyway, I need to take a breather from this world for a while. While I still enjoy the series, I’m not as excited as I was a few books ago. This tells me it is time to read something else.

Eighth in the Chicagoland Vampires urban fantasy series for Young Adults and based in Chicago while revolving around Merit, the young Sentinel for her House of vampires.

My Take
I'm not sure what to say. Partly because I'm concerned that I'm bringing my annoyances from the last few novels over to this one. It's better than the last two, Biting Cold , 6, and House Rules , 7. I guess I'll call it mediocre. I know, damning with faint praise.

Where are the police while all this is playing out? What is the newspaper's response? I find it hard to understand how all this rioting plays out in such a vacuum with only the mayor's office and McKetrick as the head liaison in the Office of Human Liaison talking about events. There's one incident with some neighbor ladies which was sweet and a couple boys. That's it.

The entire incident with the GP? Stupid. Just plain stupid. As for the GP's grandstanding and Cadogan House's concerns about how to respond. Why? Why does Cadogan need to even think about responding? They voted themselves out of the vampire union. GP has no say in anything Cadogan does. WTF?

What? I can't believe Merit just let the Volvo go that easily. Catcher's concerns about how he let Mallory's actions slide through under his nose are certainly downplayed. Just another example of dramatic possibilities being ignored. Merit's incident at Grey House? Stupid. I can't see her making that simple of a mistake. Although I did enjoy all the teasing she got later.

Can someone explain to me why Monmouth is calling Merit garbage?

Then there's the ending. It's what we all want to have happen. But this easily?? Again. WTF? Is anybody editing this for silliness? They certainly aren't editing for info dumps. Lord, they're scattered every other paragraph. I feel like I'm stepping around land mines in Eastern Europe. Pssst, if anyone needs examples of info dumps, read this. You'll stumble over 'em everywhere...

Wow, when the truth behind the riots comes out, you'd think wow, great opportunity for drama, tension. And you'd be right. Obviously, Neill didn't think so. Has she no respect for her target audience's intellect?

All of a sudden the police are playing nice? What's with that?

Now for the nice things I can say: Gabe's "prank" on Ethan? Too funny, and it's one way to get a better parking spot! I loved the build-up Merit gave Mallory at the start of the story to scare off the bullies.

It's cute and sweet with Merit and Ethan all lovey-dovey and pranks being played. Then there's the other side with hatred and bigotry...and Merit's father wanting in on the action. I'm not even going to mention all the loose threads. For one, there are too many. For another, well, someone has to put the tension into this story.

The Story
Just when you think it's safe to walk the streets, riots will bring you back to reality. It's a scary reality when humans are out to get you. Nor do they care if they hit their target precisely, which means Chicago itself is at risk.

It could be even more at risk when Mallory can't resist testing her magic to help out.

The Characters
Merit is a newly turned vampire—she's been a vampire for 10 months now—who is the Sentinel of her House. Its ultimate guardian. Moneypenny is a 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300SL with a history. Robert and Charlotte are her still-human siblings. Elizabeth, Robert's wife, is expecting her third. Olivia is Charlotte's youngest; Major Corkberger, a heart surgeon, is Charlotte's husband. Joshua is her ruthless, yet clueless father, the one who tried to pay Ethan to turn Merit; Meredith is her sociable mother.

Ethan "Darth" Sullivan is 400 years old and Master of Cadogan House, one of four groups of vampires in Chicago. Luc is captain of the House Guards; Kelley, Lindsey (she and Luc are hooked up), and Juliet are the official guards. Helen was a White House social secretary before Ethan stole her away. Delia is the House's resident doctor. Louie and Angelo are some of the human guards employed by Cadogan House. Connor is a clueless young vampire.

There are four vampire houses in Chicago: Cadogan; Grey led by Scott Grey; Navarre led, sort of, by Morgan Greer; and, Sheridan House which doesn't exist in this story.

Jonah is captain of the Grey House guards AND Merit's partner in the Red Guard. Aubrey is a jealous Grey House guard. Brooklyn is an unhappy vampire. Dr. Gianakous is Grey's House doctor.

Catcher Bell is a warlock and Merit's friend as well as her beginning teacher in swordcraft. He's also Mallory's maybe boyfriend. Mallory Carmichael is Merit's friend and a witch. One who went very badly awry and is now on probation in the magic community and serving it within the confines of the shifter community, the North American Central Pack. Gabe Keene is the alpha who oversees Mallory's rehabilitation. Tanya is his wife, and they have a new baby son, Connor. Berna is one of Gabe's relatives and bartender at Little Red.

Jeff Christopher is a friend, colleague, shifter, and computer nerd who works for Merit's grandfather, Chuck Merit, the former Ombudsman who acted as liaison for Chicago's supernatural before he was fired. Detective Jacobs is investigating the riots and bombings.

Blood4You is a blood distribution company owned by Charla and her chemist brother, Alan Bryant. Robin Pope is a disgruntled employee.

Saul makes great pizza. Sam and Aaron are the kids who stood up to the bullies. Nick Breckenridge is a journalist, a shifter, and sees vampires as the enemy. Which begs the question as to why he's so amenable.

John McKetrick is a nutjob who's got the wrong people fooled. He's the current head of the Office of Human Liaisons while Diane Kowalcyzk is the really stupid mayor.

Greenwich Presidium is the central governing core of all vampires which regulates every little detail of the North American and Western European vampires while giving nothing back. Darius West is supposedly the head of the GP, but there are rumors. Lakshmi Rao is a member of the GP and the Red Guard with a crush on Jonah. Harold Monmouth is am ambitiously vicious twerp. The Red Guard is a clandestine unit tasked with overseeing the Houses and the GP to ensure they don't get out of line.

The Cover
The cover is a deep and lovely purple in the night sky above Chicago as a leather-clad Merit hunkers down on her heeled boots out on a pier and looks back at the city over the gleaming waters.

The title comes from Merit's realization that while Cadogan House may allow vampires to bite humans, doing it to kill is Biting Bad.

3.6 stars. Ethan, aka Darth Sullivan, was a very different master vampire in this edition. He was romantic, sarcastic, caring and even compromising. He took Merit's breath, and mine away a few times, once involved getting down on one knee. He had a few fantastic lines one of my favorite was " I'm rarely good Merit. But I'm often spectacular". Oh yes, I agree with that. If he keeps this up his Darth retain could just wither away. He polished his big bad badge when he had an off with his head moment, that was spectacular to read and had me cheering out loud.

Merit, well she spent most of her time be played by Ethan. She said "Ethan Sullivan could play me like a Stradivarius" and he did in may ways. <wink> When she wasn't playing house with E-man she was hunting down clues or trying to get close again to her long time gal pal, Mallory. The mystery of who started a riot and why. She also had some family drama that took the couple into normal life zones that was fun to watch them juggle.

Watching the moments between the two of them made the book worth reading. But, I could have missed out on 1/2 of the book, the politics. Arguh, will they ever get toned down. I did skim through many pages of power drama. The mixing of the houses was too brief I thought could have been an interesting little window to delve into. There was a lot of little side stories going on that just fell flat for me, the car, the magical usage, the GP, the disgruntled employee, the riots. The ending was of course a cliffhanger. Do I care enough about what happens to carry on with the series ? I'm on the fence, it is a B rated series for me now I will not rush out to get a copy. It semi missed my reading joy mark.

*My Thoughts*

"We made it to the front door before trouble found us again." Merit

Trouble has a way of finding its way into Merit's life ever since she became an unwilling vampire 10 months ago, and the Sentinel of Cadogan House led by Ethan "Darth" Sullivan. What's interesting about Biting Bad is that yes we do have some danger straight ahead for the vampires of Cadagon, but we also have the fact that Ethan and Merit have been a couple and living peacefully together for the past 2 months. There's no drama or extraneous jealously between the couple even with Merit being a part of the Red Guard with Jonah as her partner.

You are asking yourself, yes, but so what? So what is the fact that the romance is much more interesting this time around. Merit is no longer lashing out at Ethan for changing her into a vampire or blaming him for the fact that she lost her humanity. There isn't the constant threat that they will get into yet another heated argument that only leads to pain and suffering for everyone involved including the house vampires. It is much more interesting to have a united couple fighting together against the forces in Chicago that are trying to run them out of the city.

Biting Bad isn't all about the romance between Ethan and Merit. There are underlying currents flowing through the City of Chicago that has people protesting, and rioting, and attacking vampires without provocation. If you are a fan of this series, and have read every book, you know that John McKetrick is a thorn in the side of Merit and Ethan's. You know that he isn't exactly timid when it comes to his absolute hatred of the supernatural community, and it won't surprise you to see what lengths he goes through in order to get his way.

Biting Bad shows some remarkable improvement when it comes to Merit and Mallory Carmichael's relationship that took a severe hit after Mallory's experience with the dark side. I think this is a pro because Merit needs her friends around her especially with an Anti supernatural mayor and the GP still not leaving the Cadogan House alone. I also hope that Mallory and Catcher can finally move towards a similar situation that Ethan and Merit have.

In my humble opinion, Biting Bad is one of the better books in the Chicagoland Vampires series. It takes you on a ride of discovery, mystery, challenges, and fight scenes that I absolutely loved. I can't wait until Wild Things releases in February 2014.

Expected publication: August 6th 2013 by NAL Penguin - ARC received from NAL Penguin in lieu of my tour stop for Biting Bad.

This is the eighth book in the Chicagoland Vampire series. The ninth book will be titled, Wild Things, and is scheduled for a February 2014 release date. This was a decent continuation of this series. I enjoyed the book and enjoyed reconnecting with all these wonderful characters.

Merit is trying to have a reconciliation dinner of sorts with Mallory when an anti-vampire riot starts, and Blood for You's headquarters is set on fire. Merit is trying to figure out who is behind the riots before they get worse. Of course things get even more complicated with the GP blacklists Cadogan House and declares war on them. Will Merit and Ethan ever get some peace?

There is a lot more about the GP vs. Cadogan House in this book (which I wish would just be resolved). Given the events in this book though, I believe Cadogan House's problems with the GP are actually starting to escalate. I am a bit sick of this storyline and kind of wish it would just be resolved.

Then of course there is the whole McKetrick storyline, he's still causing a lot of trouble in the background. Of course he is who Merit immediately suspects is behind the riots and the fires, but she is having trouble actually proving it.

The majority of the story involves Merit running around trying to find out who is behind these riots. She runs into a lot of dead ends.

Also Mallory is back in the story some and is more of herself. I liked seeing that she was more in control of her magic and was back to making funny/witty comments. It was also nice to see her and Catcher trying to mend fences.

There were also lots of great fight scenes. Ethan and Merit are in fine form and it was nice to see them working as a team. There are lots of tender moments between the two and I felt like this was the first book where they finally were on more stable ground with each other. It was nice to see.

As with the previous few books, this book felt more like a vampire soap opera than an action packed urban fantasy. I still feel like Neill is floundering a bit with where things are going next.

Despite the above I do really like these characters and thought it was a decent enough story. It's pretty predictable and not as explosilvly entertaining as the earlier books in the series. It was still an entertaining read though.

Overall I enjoyed this book. I love the characters and enjoy reading about them. I am a bit sick of the storyline about the conflict between the GP and Cadogan House and wish this would get resolved so we could move onto something more interesting. I guess I wish the storyline had moved along a bit better in general. However I do love this world and did find the book to be an entertaining read. So, I will most likely read the next book in the series as well. I would recommend this series to fans of vampire urban fantasy, just be aware that the first five or so books are by far the best. The last few have been kind of weak.

Usually when it comes to the Chicagoland Vampires, readers are sucked right into the story right from the very start. A feeling of urgency to find out what is truly going on and to solve the mystery at hand. Not so much this time around.

In Biting Bad, Merit and the Cadogen House vampires are trying to figure out who is behind Clean Chicago, an anti-vampire hate group armed with Molotov cocktails. The attacks seem to be well organized, but is there an underlying reason behind them. And the last place they set fire to, was the last place anyone ever expected.

While the plot had great potential, there was so much more that could have been done with it. Don't get me wrong, there were parts that were truly worth reading; Ethan goes to meet the family, a heart-wrenching scene between Merit and Chuck, a heart-melting scene to make readers fall in love with Ethan all over again, and a killer moment of bitter-sweet revenge. The main problem was that the book seemed like a regular mystery than a vampire novel. The magic was there, but only in the background. There just wasn't enough umph for my tastes. For readers who like a good mystery, or just need a dose of Ethan/Merit, you may enjoy. For die hard vampire lovers, you may want to skip this one, or just skim through for the important parts, and hope for that flare to be back in the next installation (which sounds very promising), Wild Things, due to come out February 4, 2014.

Ok, so i whooshed through this book, which is no surprise! as always a total page turner. i tried to put it down and picked it up to finish a chapter and ended up finishing the book instead!

This one picks up pretty much where the last book left, so this was a very political orientated book.

Beginning with riots that have no rhyme or reason to it until the last few pages, dealing with the new title of "rogue" vamps after being removed from the GP, Mallory is making a slow recovery and we see more of her in this book, which is nice to see. Merit and Mallory's friendship is still on shaky ground, but it seems to be slowly mending which is nice!

The rioters targeted Grey House leaving them homeless and Cadogan House opens it doors to allow them somewhere safe to stay....but what punishment would either house get for Grey consorting with a blacklisted house? The GP turn up to try and bully their way around.

Merit and Ethan seems to be getting to be a better and nice romance. I miss the tension of the "will they-wont they" but its not to say that their relationship is pushed at you, its now more of a background story now.

As always a good old cliffhanger at the end, which was totally unexpected and leaves me itching to get into the next book which is due out in February 2014 (waaaaah!!!)

The story starts with Merit meeting BFF Mallory for pizza. They've had some issues...with Mallory going all dark sorceress on everyone, but she's over that now and Merit hopes to reignite their freindship because she misses her bestie- a lot.

Of course their dinner is interupted...because when you're a supernatural the mundane things humans enjoy and take for granted always seem to be out of your reach.

An explosion rocks the area then a riot breaks out...full of vampire hating humans.

And that's just the first in a string of riots and violence towards vampires that don't make complete sense- and they have no idea who is behind it. Merit has a suspect, but no evidence to connect him.

Things are rocky in relationshipland too. Not personally between Merit and Ethan but because of all the outside forces trying to come between them.

Merit and Ethan are finally in a good place with their relationship- unfortunately life just won't let them enjoy it.

GP drama, human issues...all interfere in the daily lives of Chicago's vampires, especially those in Cadogan House. Ethan and Merit can't even appreciate their first Valentine's Day as a couple- and after everything they've been through they really deserve it.

This book is a non-stop action filled novel full of angst, drama, heartache, freindship, love and a touch of mystery interspersed with violence that will keep the pages flipping.

Biting Bad is a fang filled adventure that will keep you guessing and second guessing, right up to the very end.

Biting Bad is about the vampires having to deal with riots breaking out, and people bombing a few places. Merit and the other vampires believe this doesn't have anything to do with vampires, but with humans. Not only do they have to deal with this but they also have to deal with the GP "blacklisting" them. Now every time they turn around they could be fighting for there lives. Along the way we get to see a sweet side to Merit and Ethan's relationship. But other than that the book felt more like a "filler" book.

I enjoyed the book overall but there were a few things that bothered me. I felt like one of the fights Ethan had with a GP member was way too easy. Not only that but it felt like Merit continually got hurt in a situation that in other books she would never had gotten hurt in. It almost felt like she's gotten weaker. Then the ending was beyond frustrating. It kind of just leaves us hanging. Now we don't really know what the heck is going to happen... I hate to have to wait so long for the next book. But other than that I really enjoyed the book. And I loved getting to see more of Ethan and Merit together that was awesome!

Biting Bad is the eighth installment of author Chloe Neill's Chicagoland Vampires series. I just love this series. There is a mystery in each book and I enjoy watching Ethan and Merit's relationship evolve. This book did not disappoint in the mystery or love department! The war some humans have waged against vampires is turning even uglier. The "war on stupidity" is what it's referred to in this book, and it's true isn't it? Is there anything other than ignorance and stupidity that fuels hate? One thing I do admire about this series is the fact that it shows the effects of prejudice, hate crimes, and age-old hatred. Even though this is a fictional paranormal series, it draws attention to these factors that are unfortunately in our very nonfictional world.

My favorite quotes:
“Ethan smiled wickedly and pressed a hard kiss to my lips. "I’m rarely good, Merit. But I’m often spectacular.”

“Sometimes you make me swoon.” “If it’s only sometimes, I’m not doing my job adequately.”

I love the Chicagoland Vampire series. It's one of my favorites. As a long-standing fan this series has pulled me through the ringer. I have gone through a JOURNEY with Merit. I was there when she became a vampire. I've fallen in love, mourned, and healed with Merit and that is why I find books like BITING BAD to be so heartbreaking. Because this is a filler book and in my opinion filler books bring down the quality of a series.

Don't get me wrong, I was entertained, but not much happens. It's like every other book in the series, but unnecessary. We don't get to understand what Gabe's prophecy is, the GP is still enemy of our favorite vampire house and McKetrick is still out there. When the book ends, Merit and Ethan are in the same exact predicament that they were in when the book began. I closed the book and felt cheated. I did, because I didn't get much out of it. Sure, I was interested in the drama, but only because I am invested in the series and characters, not because I was invested in BITING BAD.

Here is what worked for me: Ethan Sullivan. Ethan is probably my favorite vampire guy. He's confident, loving, romantic and BAMF. Honestly, what more could I want? From Book 1 of this series Ethan has been swoon worthy and I love reading about his relationship with Merit and his relationship to the house. Another aspect of this book that works is our look into Gray house.

We've known about the other two vampire houses, their masters and even had a look into independent vampires, but this is the first true look we've had into Gray house and how it works. Scott as a Master is very different from Ethan and it was great to see another Master who is equally as competent, but in a different way. It's very clear from the scenes we have with Scott why an upstanding guy like Jonah would follow him. Basically, this book is carried on the shoulders of two vampire masters.

Sure, the book has its normal comedy, Chicago food cravings, an investigation and Merit running about getting into trouble. It's business as usual. What didn't work for me is Merit as a Vampire, which I know sounds strange. Merit is an awful vampire in this book. The whole reason we are obsessed with Vamps is that they are like us, with some advantages. Somehow in this book Merit gets her butt handed to her by humans more than once. Actually, Merit gets her butt handed to her over and over. I got really frustrated with her, because I could not believe the amount of times that she was on the losing end of arguments, fights and interrogations. Here is the real issue...I have been reading this series for years, but Merit has only been a vampire for a year.

YUP! ONE YEAR. 8 books and only a year has passed. Which means that Ethan and Merit have only been side by side for 8 months. Which means that Merit has only been a vampire, Sentinel of her house and an investigator for 12 months. Honestly, this distracted me from the book. I have been reading this series for years and only a year has passed for these characters. The idea that Merit and Ethan have only known each other 12 months and have only been committed for a few weeks, really puts a damper on how I feel about that relationship. He was gone a hell of a lot longer than they've been together. How can they honestly be epic, be forever, be soul mates and have this much of a solid relationship if everything is that NEW? How can Ethan be that into their relationship when he is hundreds of years old? One year has to be nothing to an immortal.

The other issue is that I just didn't get into the investigation. I didn't care. There is so much storyline left over from earlier books that dealing with another case seemed futile. Especially since Merit has not progressed as a detective. She is still like batman when it comes to investigations. They have no real skills, but the answer just falls into their lap if they bug enough people.

Listen, I didn't hate the book. It just is not as good as the two that came before it. For a series that has brought me to ugly crying alone in my dorm room, I am real upset to say that this book is just ok. It has all the elements that I love in the series, but it all just seemed redundant and unnecessary. If you love the series read it, but honestly you can wait or skip it all together. Nothing of any real importance happens that you won't be able to pick up in book 9.

Biting Bad, the eighth installment in Neill's Chicagoland Vampire series, starts out with a bang as it reveals the plot elements of the story. Fast pacing and high charged energy keeps the story flowing nicely as we learn of the new challenges Merit, Ethan, and the rest of Cadogan House are now facing. The world building remains inviting as Neill builds a balance that embraces both the supernatural and the mundane and build upon it. While I enjoyed the overall storyline, there wasn't much arc advancement. There are quite a few loose threads still waving in the wind. A large amount of the book revolves around Ethan and Merit. They have settled into a comfortable routine that shows us they are both committed to the relationship and in it for the long haul. Sexy chemistry still burns sharp between them and I enjoyed seeing them interact on a sweet emotional level without all the drama that has infected them throughout the series.

The mystery and subsequent investigation was interesting and filled with action and suspense though I got a deja vu feeling at times. I felt a strong similarity to the events in House Rules in the setup and execution of the story. There is lots of action but the revealing is lowkey. Everything comes together to easily without much conflict. Certain sub plots seem to go nowhere, offering no boost or advancement of the storyline and I wondered at their significance. We receive some ambiguous clues to the future and I for one am interested in seeing what Neill will build with those clues. I would have more inclusion of Gabriel Keene and his prophecy. That thread seems to have stalled but I'm sure Neill has great plans for us and Merit regarding that.

Engaging secondary characters and sustainable relationships remains a strong aspect in the overall enjoyment of this series. The dialogue remains sharp and witty, keeping you laughing at the most inappropriate times. Old and new enemies come into play as Merit and Ethan work on discovering the GP's real agenda towards them and figure out who is targeting their kind. We see many old friends and get a small intimate looks at how their lives are progressing. Mallory is slowly becoming a strong presence again and I like that she and Merit are rebuilding their friendship. Neill makes a major concession regarding Mallory that bodes interesting for the future. Catcher plays a major role in this installment and I'm glad to see him and Mallory making progress in their relationship.

The ending wraps up this storyline, leaving a few open threads and a small cliffhanger to lead us into book nine, Wild Things, set to release Feb 2014. Regardless of some innocuous problems, I enjoyed Biting Bad. This series remains a dark humorous Urban Fantasy/PNR with plenty of action, romance, and snark. This is not a standalone though and I do not recommend starting the series here. This is a convoluted series that builds upon itself with each new book. The arc is long reaching with minor recapping.

**There will be two Chicagoland Vampire novellas released before Wild Things.**

Biting Bad was reminiscent of the earlier Chicagoland Vampires novels and I for one couldn't be happier! The first three installments are what hooked me on this series and this latest one has ensured that I'll continue reading these books for a long time to come, especially with all of the promising new novellas that are already in the pipeline. This novel is Ethan/Merit drama free which was a huge relief because readers can now actually focus on Chloe Neill's phenomenal writing style and storytelling skills instead of their relationship woes.

The first thing that stood out for me about this book were the recaps; Neill does an excellent job of filling in any memory blanks readers may have while still weaving in new plot threads at the same time. After the first chapter I was able to easily get my bearings in Chicagoland which allowed me to seamlessly reenter this world as though no time had elapsed between installments. I was also so thankful that Neill established within the first one hundred pages that Ethan and Merit were not going to be at odds in this story. This made it feel as though a huge weight was lifted off my shoulders because in the last few books I was always waiting for the other shoe to drop; both of these elements allowed me to just sit back and enjoy the ride worry-free.

I loved how much attention Neill paid to the characters' surroundings in this book; she knows both Chicago and its winters well, and it shows. I live in Canada and I'm pretty used to the cold but even I got sympathy chills while reading about the city's frigid temperatures. This novel has a lot of little extras like that and I do like an author with a keen eye for details! Merit's socialite status is becoming ever more important as this series progresses and I enjoyed how in this installment she has designers vying for her attention in an attempt to be THE fashion designer of choice for vamps. Our Sentinel isn't usually overly fond of pretty things but even she liked the custom dress. I also had to Google what a 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300SL looks like because of the fun back-and-forth between Ethan and Gabe. Now I understand why Mr. Sullivan had car envy!

Ethan and Merit are great in this installment; they have finally reached a happy place in their relationship and I couldn't help but breathe a huge sigh of relief. In the midst of the city going to Hell they are still trying to have a "normal" Valentine's Day and I LOVED THAT! Catcher and Mallory are on the mends as well; I'm so happy that the Chicagoland Vampires are becoming one big happy family again. They have enough drama in their lives without having to take it from each other as well. The bad guy was obvious but Neill still makes you work for it in a roundabout way and no installment in this series would be complete without... you guessed it, a cliffhanger! But it's nowhere near as bad as some of Chloe's previous ones have been so you can rest easy.

I don't have one single complaint where Biting Bad is concerned. I absolutely loved this book from start to finish; this is the installment that I have been waiting for. Chloe Neill is back on top and her Chicagoland Vampires are better than ever!

Let me start by saying that I have been a fan of the Chicagoland Vamps since Some Girls Bite - and this may be my most favorite (I am totally fan-girling) book of the bunch so far. And, no, I don't just say that when each book comes out - before this, my favorite was Hard Bitten (even though I hated the end - why Chloe, why?!?).

I absolutely, completely adored Merit & Ethan in this book. Ethan especially. Merit was her usual kick-ass, snarky self, but Ethan has game...and boy did he bring it. I have now decided that my husband needs to be just like Ethan. The 394 year old Vamp that looks like Beckham shouldn't be hard to pull off right? *Sigh* I'll just keep imagining that I can make that happen!

This series has come such a long way, and it feels like it's been years in Chicagoland time, when in reality it's been less than a year. In fact, as Merit tells Mallory:

"You're at the stage where good intentions meet crappy abilities. Welcome to my first eleven months as a vampire."

"You've only been a vampire for ten months."

"My point exactly."

I am so glad that Merit and Mallory are working on getting their friendship back. It's one of my favorite parts of the book. I don't have a best friend like Mallory, so getting to live vicariously through Merit is awesome! I also loved the Merit/Ethan relationship in this one. I was so happy there was no relationship drama between the two of them in this book. There has been so much back and forth between Merit and Ethan, and they are due a little bit of a respite. I loved Ethan before Biting Bad, but I really, really loved Ethan after reading this book. He is definitely swoon-worthy! My favorite Ethan quote? This one:

"Take home a message to Darius West. He gets his House in order or we do it for him."

and, best Ethan/Merit quote (that won't give anything away - although, make sure you read Chapter 10!)

"Haven't you ever cried when you, I don't know, you get a new batch of fancy stationery you like with the watermarks on it?"

He looked bewildered, "That's what you think I'd cry tears of relief about?"

"You do like your office supplies."

and, one more - most swoon-worthy:

"For my parents?"

"For your parents, your siblings, your nieces and nephews," he said. "For you. Because I want to make a good impression."

"You've met my parents before."

"I have," he said, and met my eyes in the mirror. "But not like this."

I may have a slight obsession with Darth Sullivan. But, if those quotes don't make you run out and buy the book on August 6th, there's something wrong with ya!

Chloe does a great job making you be able to imagine everything going on in the book. I swear, it could play like a movie in my head while I'm reading. I've never been to Chicago, but I would be able to find my way around Hyde Park, Navy Pier, and many other areas just by the way she describes things. And, she does a wonderful job getting us into Merit's head, while letting us get to know the other characters intimately as well. We found out so much more about Scott Grey in this installment, and I really don't like Morgan in this book. I'm not English, but what an arse! He started to redeem himself in Biting Cold, but he really regressed in this book. I am so disappointed in him!

The GP - oh, the GP! They are up to their usual shenanigans in this book, but with a twist that I totally didn't see coming, and may have just put me in a stupor for a little while. You know the kind, the "OMG, what the hell just happened?" kind of stupor. The one that most books need more of!

I could be here forever touching on spots in this book, or I could just type out the whole thing for you. But, I won't - I don't need Chloe coming after me ! So much about this book is worth mentioning in a review. Gabriel's paternal nature with Connor, Saul - of Saul's Pizza (Merit + Food - need I say more?), Luc moments, Merit & Ethan, Merit & Jonah, the Ombuddies, the list goes on and on. And, Chloe Neill did it again with a scene that makes your heart jump to your throat, and your stomach drop to your toes. This book was absolute non-stop romance, never-ending action & angst, and lots of laughing until you cry. I definitely give it 5 stars.

Now, I'm going to leave you and try to turn my hubby into an Ethan Sullivan clone - but he'll probably just kick soccer balls at my head all night.

Read this book cause the flyleaf said it's on a par with Laurell K. Hamilton and Charlene Harris...so NOT true. This is pure hormonal driven adolescent pap. Houses firebombed and people killed and all the protaganist and her male characters do is obsess on how all this is interferring with their Valentine's Day! I don't mind some libidinous fantasy but get real...males do NOT look forward to V-Day with breathless, romantic anticipation...especially when friends and relatives are dying around them...geeez!

Even though Merit's tenure as one of the undead has been for a relatively small amount of time, she's been through an incredible amount in that short time. Despite their best efforts to live in harmony with the living citizens of their beloved Chicago, not everyone is happy to have them in their city. So, it's not much of a surprise when vampire hating riots start popping up and destroying vamp friendly areas one location at a time. So, Merit and the rest of the Cadogan house are stuck in a scramble to find out who is organizing these strikes before all of Chicago burns, humans and vamps alike.
Something I've really grown to love about this story is that each book has it's own plot and current "mess" for the vampires going on. However, there also is the larger overall plot with the GP going on as well, which I think really ties the series together strongly. Most of the book is taken up by that main plot, in this case, the vampire riots, but interwoven into things is the political problems with the GP. And boy let me tell you, this time they ended on a doozey, that will surely make things rather interesting in the next installment, I'm sure. But getting back to BITING BAD's main plot of the riots, I was impressed with the pacing of this issue. In some of the previous installments it did feel like the plot/investigations dragged at times, but this time around, the wild goose chase seemed to be greatly lessened, which made for a much smoother and evenly paced read.
If you've read my reviews of the previous books in this series, then you know that I am 100% Team Merit and Ethan. In fact, Hard Bitten was one of the hardest books I've ever read due to the devastation. So, even though Ethan came back four installments ago, I'm honestly still waiting for Chloe Neill to pull the rug out from under us again. Granted, it doesn't do good things for my nerves, but I will admit that it keeps me more on my toes, and makes the danger feel more real. However, that being said, I don't think I could handle another devastation like that, so I'm just going to hope my worry is unfounded and enjoy the time between the two of them. And let me tell you, the time between them is absolutely amazing in BITING BAD. They've passed that new couple stage, and now are becoming more comfortable around each other and starting to think about the long haul. I'll admit that the beginning of love is exhilarating, but my favorite fictional romances are the ones we get to see mature over time, and that is exactly the case here. Of course, it does help that Ethan is completely swoon worthy and now has no problem showing his affection for Merit. In fact I cannot count the number of times Merit and myself let out a sigh of swooning over this vampire. There's very few paranormal characters that I would brave their worlds for and Ethan is one of them.
Considering this is the 8th book in the series, I find it rather impressive that things have not gotten stale at all. In fact, almost the opposite is true as each new installment, once finished leaves me incredibly desperate to get my hands on the next book. BITING BAD is no exception. It was a fast paced read that kept me thoroughly engrossed from the very start. Between the high stakes, the intense romance, and the fabulous cast of characters, I cannot recommend this book any higher! Run, do not walk, to snatch this puppy up. Trust me, you won't regret it.

ometimes a favourite series seems to be losing steam as the books keep on coming and I end up losing interest, but I'm very happy to say that so far it isn't happening with the Chicagoland Vampires series. Biting Bad is the 8th book in the series and I've thoroughly enjoyed it.

Because it is the 8th book it's gonna be quite impossible for me to not post spoilers, and probably unwittingly big ones for the previous books, but I will try my best to not have any for Biting Bad itself.

Merit is trying to patch up her friendship with Mallory and they decide to go have some time for themselves and have some amazing pizza, but their plans go totally awry when a riot breaks out in Chicago against vampires, targeting the biggest supplier of blood for vampires in the city, Blood4You. They try to avoid the violence but end up having to do some fighting to get away from the riots and not just Merit is the one fighting, Mallory ends up using some her magic, which ends up with them discussing her progress on controlling her abilities and what will she be doing with her magic from now on.

That riot is just the start and Merit and the Cadogan vampires along with Jonah her RG partner have to try and figure out who's behind the riots and what's their real intent before Chicago turns against vampires as a whole again. Stakes get even higher when the GP decides to put an even bigger strain on the Cadogan vampires and the rioters end up targeting Merit's family.

This book has the right mix of action, mystery, politics and romance to keep me entertained, ponder on who the bad guy it is, laugh at Merit and Ethan's puns and swoon on occasion due to Ethan's Ethan-ness!

Then ending was quite a "oh no, you don't!" kind of an ending that has me now quite excited about the next book!

This series continues to be one of my solid favourites and Biting Bad is a solid 4 stars.

This is the eighth installment of one of my favorite series that features one of my favoritest heroines, Merit. She's hot, she's a butt-kicker and a leader and she carries a freakin' sword! Chloe easily fills readers in (for those of us who don't exactly remember book seven) while making it feel as though we're still reading a fresh story. Along with action and the typical relationship with our leading couple is an interesting twist: Ethan and Merit are not at odds! The story focuses not only on the two but also on Mallory and Merit as well as the riots against vampires that are rising in Chicago. This was action-packed and heavy-on-the-romance and was everything that had me falling in love with Some Girls Bite. If you haven't already read this series, I highly recommend picking it up. Chloe is fantastic!

I absolutely love the series. Great action and mystery and a hot love story. What's not to love? I like how even though Merit is a vampire, you see so much humanity in her which often surprises those around her. It has been fascinating to watch her grow and you want to keep rooting for her and Ethan.

Keep them coming!

So, like most of you I'm going to assume by now you are an avid fan of Merit's story and you should be. Usually the books are engaging and exciting with some antics included to keep you entertained. However, after reading this book I got TIRED of it, with that being said the main thing I got tired of was Ethan CONSTANTLY saving Merit! We spent 7 books of Merit being a Bad @$$ and all of a sudden she becomes some damsel in distress that needs to be saved every 5 pages. How annoying is that? What happened to strong capable Merit? Did she die when Ethan came back? This book really just ended up being a filler book to keep the series moving. I'm sure you are all also aware of Neill's writing style, which is 150 pages of what is going on?!? to the last 5 pages being Oh that's what it was get ready for the next book. And I never penalize her for writing like this even though it is not my preferred method of reading because if gives you zero opportunity to appreciate the aftermath but like I said I've stuck with the story for the entire duration only to be let down by damsel in distress Merit. If I wanted a damsel in distress I would watch a Disney Movie. Merit is a fricken VAMPIRE, why isn't she doing vampire things? She almost got killed by a HUMAN. Think about that. She has just spent 7 books being awesome, her boyfriend comes back to life and then she turns into a little B word. (excuse my language). Get it together Neill, for Merit's sake and ours. This was one of the worst books I've ever read and I would have skipped it had I know. I don't know if I will continue the series especially if Merit keeps up the help me help me girly act. A side note, I read the book when it came out and WAITED to make my review because I wanted to see if I really felt the same way, I do. the book sucked. If Merit doesn't get it together I wont continue the series, I hope she can go back to being a VAMPIRE and not a little girl who needs saving every 5 minutes. My final word is that Neill's books can be better and I understand that you can't make everyone happy but turning the main character into a person who she hasn't been for the last past 7 books is not a way to keep the fan base. Hopefully, Neill reads this and realizes you don't need a man to save you every 5 pages for them to love you.

I have loved this series from the beginning and nothing, not even the terrible tragedy that Chloe Neill put me through, will change that. I will say the last couple of books seem like they are lacking something like the angst from previous books. Yes they are together but I feel like I need more emotion or something from Ethan. Since ya don't know what's going on in that beautiful head of his, I feel like I just need more from him. Maybe I just miss the dance between them, but I do want them together. Regardless, still my fave series! I have laughed and cried and want to continue to do it. This series is amazing and I know it will only get better.

Merit is BACK! Ahh I love this series. The Cadogan House is doing well for themselves but the GP still makes moves against them. Their allies have some tough choices in BITING BAD but that does not keep Cadogan from coming to their rescue when they are attacked. I think it is great that even with the GP continuously coming down on them they always seem to come out on top!

I love every little think about Merit and Ethan's relationship. They try really hard to be a normal couple and do pull it off every once in a while but they truly have come a long way from who they were in book 1. It is so refreshing getting thorough a book without Ethan pushing Merit away. On another thought, am I the only one who keeps waiting for Merit to get pregnant? I just KNOW it has to happen at some point, right?

I enjoyed watching Merit and Mallory move closer together as friends. Their relationship will never be the same but I think they are making great progress. I think it is great that Merit and Jonah are still great Red Guard partners. They talk easily with each other and they work great together.

The action as usual is at every turn and the characters keep you coming back for more. I thought the character growth in BITING BAD was great and I look forward to seeing where everything takes the series next. We end on another cliffhanger, what else? February can not come soon enough. Enjoyed every minute of book 8.

I love Chloe Neill and I have read all of the Chicagoland Vampire novels. I started years ago and became a quick fan of Ethan (sigh) and Merit's, but now I feel like the series is just going and going and going, and there is nothing really to it anymore. Every time I think it is the last book, and I am anticipating some type of closure, or for things to be a little normal and restful for the h/H, it just starts all over again. Another cliffhanger and another crisis to solve or concur! I do love the interaction between Ethan and Merit, don't get me wrong but I am afraid I am done. I don't really feel there is a story there anymore, and it's just all drawn out. Chloe, please don't follow in Charlaine Harris's footsteps and reduce a great series to crap (couldn't even finish the last Sookie book, so darn awful). For me, this is goodbye, before I start hating the characters I have become to love. Thanks Chloe for a great ride!

Spoilers

Biting Bad starts off with a spar session between Merit and her oh-so-yummy Master/lover, Ethan Sullivan. Of course the members of Cadogan House had to watch the sparring session to see who beats who. In the crowd are Catcher Bell, Merit's friend and mentor, and Jonah of House Grey, who also happens to be Merit's Red Guard partner. Since being rescued by Cadogan House, the head of the GP has remained quiet and everyone is on red alert to see what they might possibly dish out as punishment for breaking away from the GP.

Merit goes off and meets up with Mallory, who has been working with Gabriel Keene, pack master of the North American Central Pack to control her magic. I am happy that Mallory and Merit have started taking steps to rebuild the relationship that they had before Mallory went all psycho-power crazy with dark magic. Things are going well when the trouble starts. Rioters are throwing Molotov cocktails at a BLOOD4YOU factory, set it ablaze, while chanting 'Clean Chicago'. The rioters began expanding and picking on people who they perceived as vampire lovers; with the suspicious intent to beat the crap out of you despite your answer. That's the scary thing with rioters. During a riot, rioters feel that they could get away with anything. To add even GREATER insult to injury, the rioters beat on Merit's car, smashing windows and making dents on the frame. Oh! Poor baby!

Gathering her wits and getting the hell out the range of danger, Merit and Mallory head back to Little Red, where Gabriel gave Merit a loaner car to drive home, since her Volvo was so beat up. There's a particular reason why he let her borrow the specific Mercedes-Benz car and it has to do with Ethan and a dead gangster, but I won't elaborate any further. ;) One shoe has dropped, but not to worry! There are other plotlines that are explored. Namely the GP and their political fight for dominance against Cadogan House. I honestly thought there would be some leniency toward Cadogan House since they did form a rescue mission to get Darius West and Lakshmi Rao back from the assassin, hired by none other than McKetrick, the hatemonger with a serious vendetta against vampires.

Later on in the book, we finally learn where McKetrick's deep-seated hatred for vamps comes from and as tragic as it was, I have no pity for this man. Moving on, we also get the meet the Merit family, with their assorted spouses. Merit and Ethan go to dinner at the Merit house and by house I mean fancy digs. The dinner scene brings a different perspective of the Merit family. From previous books, the Merits came off as elitist and were not accepting of anything that disrupted their way of life and reputation in society. They still came off as elitist, but not so much. Mr. Merit Sr. still has the need to distance himself from his poor upbringing by putting on a show of a fancy dinner; even though it's just a family dinner.

Merit, along with her friends investigate the perpetrator of the firebombings at the factory as well as the other vampire friendly places that were attacked. There's more to the story than meets the eye and Merit is just the girl to piece it together. Friendships are rebuilt, lives are lost and the fight for their livelihood is at hand! There's action, romance, humor, and plenty of emotions to go around. Biting Bad is a wonderful addition to the series and Chloe Neill does it again! I absolutely can't wait to read the next book!

I really have a lot of love for this series. But what I love about it is the push-pull of Ethan and Merit's romance. When neither Ethan or Merit are endangered or irrationally angered by something that causes them to have an intense conflict, there's no there here.

I tried to read the Dark Elite series by this author. Granted, it's for teens, but it was BORING. This book reminded me of the Dark Elite series: all surface and nothing interesting. Ms. Neill is amazing when it comes to describing tortured romance in a smart, sexy way. She's not so great at plot convolutions. I'll continue to read this series until there are a couple of books in a row as boring as this one, but after that, I'm out.

** Spoilers **

After I loved House Rules so much, I was hoping Biting Bad would be just as good, but it feels like Chloe Neill is still trying to get the story back on track after derailing it for a few books.

There wasn't much happening in this story even though it feels like it at first. Rioters in Chicago are attacking vampires & the vampires are trying to find out who is behind them. That's really the entire story. Ethan & Merit are still strong as a couple, so that's good. Mallory is also back & using her magic for good, so she & Merit are moving towards being BFFs again, also good. Two characters are finally gotten rid of McKetrick & Monmouth from the GP, but both stories end pretty abruptly which is why it feels like Neill is just trying to get rid of them. All the other regulars are back, including Merit's family, (her father is up to something, again) & the ombuddies, & I was happy about that too.

I thought the book was OK, but it took me four days to read it because it the story wasn't compelling enough for me to read it straight through. It was a pleasant diversion, but I wish it had been better.

As always another great adventure for Merit and the gang. This one was really captivating and kept you on your toes. Twists and turns galore. I was happy to see more of our Grey house friends as well as Catcher and Mallory. Never crazy about cliffhangers but on the upside it just means the gang is coming back for another adventure. And can I say I am really loving Merit and Ethan's relationship. Things fall apart around them but they remain strong together. Definitely gets 5 stars from me.

**Review courtesy of All Things Urban Fantasy**

BITING BAD, book eight in the Chicagoland Vampires series had everything you've likely come to expect from a Merit book- action, supernatural politicking, the big evil baddie with a plan and of course, plenty of sarcastic Merit one-liners. The last few pages packed in so many developments I found myself rushing to keep up with all that was happening. At book eight in the series, we've gotten to the point where they books focus less on Merit's development, and more on the events surrounding her. And quite a few events there are! Riots against the supernaturals, continued difficulties with the GP, and a malicious force out to get the vampires.

What I missed in BITING BAD that we had in previous Chicagoland Vampires books is Merit's camaraderie with her girlfriends. I feel like since Mallory had her little incident (you know when she almost destroyed Chicago), and Lindsey is now dating Luc, Merit doesn't have the female companionship that she used to. The cast of characters has grown to the point where Merit just can't spend quality time with any of them, and while I like all of the additions, it's hard when it means we don't get to see as many interactions with her grandfather or other of my early favorites. Plus, since her relationship with Ethan is pretty set, it is less exciting to me- no tension!

I still love Merit as a main character. She's awesome, strong and smart, and a really great vampire heroine, one of my favorites. I'm a bit biased, but I also enjoy her love of the city of Chicago, since I'm a fan and love the location dropping- though I'll have to forgive her Cubs allegiance. The development in BITING BAD of her relationship with her family is both interesting and funny, since we haven't had much experience with them before, and I feel we see a different side to her father, even if it's just for a minute.

I'm dying to get my hands on WILD THINGS, book nine of the Chicagoland Vampires series. Looks like I'm only going to have to wait six months since Neill seems to be putting out Merit books as fast as she can. Luckily, the quality hasn't decreased and that makes me eager for more, since I need to find out what happens with McKetterick and between Ethan and Merit. Chicagoland Vampires is one of my favorite series, and with each installment, I'm reminded why I keep coming back for more.

****SPOILER ALERT****Merit's ongoing luck is beginning to annoy me. She seems to just sail through these books in a plastic bubble, immune to any real losses. Nobody close to her dies (permanently, at least). Mallory's back on track and their friendship is renewed, Ethan's back from the dead, and even when the rioters firebomb her grandfather's house, Grandpa and Jeff both survive. For me, this lack of realism (never thought I'd accuse a paranormal book of that) really makes it hard to discern any character growth.

Chloe Neill delivers yet again! The story has it all: murder, mystery, love & humor. Plus it's more of what we want. More Jeff, Jonah, Catcher & Mallory & of course, Merit & Ethan. Sigh...I absolutely loved Ethan in this one! I won't tell you what happens b/c that is the best part...the thrill of reading it! But all I can say is...WOW! Can't wait for the next one! :)

It's hard to like or dislike this book. It's a very by-the-numbers tale, with no real surprises, but it works reasonably well. I'd have liked some more invention, and to be honest I've already forgotten what happened in the story, but it passed the time.

Merit and Ethan never get a break. All she wants is to spend time with her Master Boyfriend. There are Anti-Vampire riots destroying businesses and other houses. Not to mention the GCP is marking her house in their sites again. What can Merit do except fight the fight that may cost her and Ethan everything. I love this series and every book we learn more about Merit and Ethan. Merit is a strong character that doesn't take any crap from anyone including Ethan, much to his dismay. Ethan is strong Alpha Vampire who demands loyalty and submission but that doesn't work for Merit and they clash a lot due to it. I love how Chloe Neill throws in Romance, Adventure and Danger all together.
