I've been a fan of Studio Ghibli for a long time, and Nausicaa is my favorite "Ghibli" (in quotations because the studio wasn't officially Ghibli when this was made) movie. When I saw that there was a manga I had to order it. The illustrations are beautifully done (no color) and it's true to the original Japanese printing (read right to left). Everything about the set is well done. The paper is light, but high quality and the binding is perfect. The Box that holds the 2 volumes is also solid and looks good on the shelf. The story itself is engrossing and the art is great, although it can be a little busy and hard to tell what's happening at times (took me a bit to get into the flow of it). I'm about halfway through the first volume now and can hardly put it down. Honestly, the only reason I'm not giving this 5 stars is because my copy has a printing error on pages 17-24 of the first volume. It seems that the machine responsible for cutting the paper messed up and left extra trim on the upper corner of the pages, which got folded in. Even if I trimmed the extra paper there is a strong and permanent crease in the page. Aside from that (relatively minor) issue this is a wonderful collection and I would highly recommend it to any Miyazaki fan.

I watch the Anime version of this as a kid. But the comic is absolutely breathtaking. Wow. B&W which explains the price. But well bound so far and very nice. Seems to be an exceptional value.

...this boxed edition of "Nausicaä Of The Valley Of The Wind Box Set" is absolutely beautiful & everything that a manga edition should aspire to be. The package consists of 2 hefty hardcovers books inside a sturdy decorated slipcase, including a color poster. This edition collects all the previously published 7 softcover volumes in full - highest possible recommendation.

The world of Nausicaa is explained and explored in detail and brings an entirely new perspective on the story from the film many are familiar with. Very high quality box and binding, large format, reads like a traditional manga.

One detail that may annoy some (I actually like it) is that the sound effects are written in Japanese. There is however a panel by panel index for each sound effect. Some like this some do not.

Overall this is an excellent purchase. Worth $60 msrp.

This is a terrific read at a great price. The art is fantastic, and in fact is a little too good for its format at times. The story goes way beyond the iconic Animated Film of the same name, and diverges in on many key points, showing us a very different side to its world and characters. Dont miss this

The Nausicaä is easily one of the best manga I've ever read. It's full of fantastic artwork and amazing characters with a great setting and engaging plot.

This release is also exceptional in it's quality, two wonderfully bound hardcover novels in a box. They're heavy and large in size making it extremely easy to read and enjoy. The paper used is quite nice and there are even some maps and full colour images. They even have an appendix featuring multiple pages of sound effect translations. Children will also appreciate the nice poster that it comes with.

If you're a fan of Hayao Miyazaki this a must have!

Haven't read more than a few pages, purchased this as a gift for my girlfriend, and she absolutely loves it. The artwork is incredible, and the movie poster that's included is actually pretty sweet. If you're a fan of the movie, definitely pick this one up, as it expands on many of the concepts introduced in the film.

I found out about this set after watching the movie. I enjoyed the movie greatly because of the interesting universe that Miyazaki had crafted, as well as the cool imagery of a fungal forest taking over the globe.

The Box set comes with two large hardcover books, and they're both contained in a nice hardcover sleeve. The books begin with some similarity to the movie, but soon after starts to deviate and takes a path of its own. I liked the story a lot, and was really surprised by how tense some of the situations turned out to be. This was helped largely by the beautiful artwork.

Though while we're on the subject of the artwork: while absolutely stunning in most panels, sometimes it gets difficult to follow because of the amount of detail that Miyazaki put into each panel. It's a double edged sword. Other reviews have mentioned that previous versions of this manga came in the typical manga size, and I can see this book being VERY difficult to interpret if it were at that size.

My last small complaint, and I admit it's kind of silly, is that the books are pretty big. It makes them rather inconvenient for taking with you on a trip; their size basically mandates that you have to read them at home.

Pros:
Great Artwork
Great Story
Complex and interesting characters
Beautiful looking set to display on bookshelf

Cons:
Artwork can cause things to be difficult to follow.
Can be difficult to read on-the-go

My son found this series on the store for like $700 and asked Santa for it. I luckily found this version for alot less so he was not dissapointed on Christmas morning. It is really pretty and nicely made. It reads backwards.

I had read the Nausicaä manga previously online - a much more in-depth story to all the characters we remember from the film, and more delving into the origins of the kingdoms/cities. There is far more to the story of this corrupted land, not just involving The Valley of the Wind, Pejite, and Tourmekia. A lot more darkness, magic, and scary corruption things. Myazaki's art style is in black-and-white, but the simplicity of the colors does not take away from the story in the least, but adds to it, in my opinion!
Long story short, when I found out about the box set, I felt I had to have it. The books are actually pretty large! The print of Myazaki's watercolor of Nausicaä is gorgeous, with two sides for whichever state of the main heroine is needed on display.
UPS bungled with my first order though - when it came in, the box containing the books was badly torn at the edges, and the corners were smashed quite badly. The corners of the books inside were in a similar condition. Had it sent back, and received a new copy. This one had the problems of the previous, but far less damage: slightly warped corners, and the box of the box set was a little worn on the edges. I felt like I shouldn't try my luck three times, as I was pretty content with what I had. So, main complaint - beware of what shipping may do to the box and books. The print was perfect in both shipments, no complaint there.
I've yet to have a quiet moment to sit down and read the manga again, so it's all just a display piece for now, but it does not lessen my opinion of it! Highly recommended :)

The art of Nausicaa is something that Hayao Miyazaki apologizes for, yet it's beautiful and organic and pencil like. It evokes the feelings of a world that's a little rough around the edges and fits the wonderful story being told. But if you're buying this box set you've probably already read the manga.

Simply put, this is the nicest printing of this product I've ever seen. The box set is well constructed and sturdy, and will stand up to reading over and over again through the years. If you love Nausicaa, this is the definitive version to own.

I'll keep my review short: This print is one of the nicest (graphic) novels that I've ever laid my hands on. The slipcase, binding, paper and inserts are of the highest quality. As for the story itself, I must first admit that I'm not a comic or manga guru. That said, if you have even the slightest interest in the genre, then you'll find that Nausicaä is a pretty safe bet. Be warned though, as others have said, this story is quite intricate with multiple characters and plot-lines. Not needlessly convoluted, mind you, just intricate. Nonetheless, your time (and money) spent with Nausicaä will not have been wasted.

The best use of money i ever spent. This book truly is the greatest story i have ever read. The art style is amazing and the characters feel so real. The story has many messages and themes that effected me on such a deep emotional and spiritual level. Thank you Hayao Miyazaki for writing this story.

Highly suggested for those who enjoyed the movie. I would have payed $60.00 for these books, the binding is sturdy, the art is amazing and the story is classic. The plot delves deeper into the world than the movie so don't think you will be reading the same story!

If you're a fan of the animated movie Nausicaa of the Valley of the wind, or if you're just a fan of Hayao Miyazaki in general... this is probably his greatest creation. Black and white comic, but it's beautifully done. And you're not going to find a better Ultimate Edition than this... encyclopedia style of a book because of how bulky it is, but wow... what a collection!

This is the way it should be read. The hardbound edition in two volumes is beautifully crafted and was actually cheaper by over $50 (at the time I purchased it) then buying the 10 paperback volumes. I already had the paperback volumes, but I am glad I got this edition. Highly recommended.

The paper quality is fantastic, the books are well built and solid, the inside bonus color pages are incredibly vibrant, and the poster is just icing on the cake.

While the sound effects are left in their original Japanese state to preserve the art, there is a glossary of sound effects, listed by page and panel number, in the back of each book.

As a big fan of the anime adaptation, I am very happy with the amount of detail covered in the manga version, and I am very happy with this box set overall.

If I were to complain about anything with this purchase, it would be that the store didn't even bother to put any padding in the box they sent it in. There was about an inch of space for the box set to move around in, so the corners of the box set sleeve were slightly dented. It was hardly noticeable, but it is something that could have been easily avoided. I received the package within two days of purchase though, even though I ordered with regular shipping!

This set is absolutely perfect. I fell in love with Nausicaa after watching the movie a few years ago, and it quickly became my favorite movie of all time. I just knew I had to read the manga (my first ever!), and luckily I found this boxed set. The artwork is stunning as to be expected of Miyazaki work. The story touches you in places you didn't know existed. Nausicaa is beautiful, strong, caring, and brave. The perfect heroine. I highly recommend this to any manga fan, miyazaki fan, nausicaa fan, ghibli fan, or just to anyone looking to experience an amazing story.

What can I say that hasn't already been said about Nausicaa. It's one of the best mangas ever made...period. As far as the condition of the the box set, it's dented on all four corners, but it's not bad enough for me to go through the trouble of sending it back.

Beautiful packaging. Even more beautiful books. I was actually surprised at how big everything was but you really need to hold this book in your hand to understand how great it looks. Never mind the story itself. That is predictably great and you probably wouldn't be here if you didn't already know that.

Written over 10 years, Nausicaa is Miyazaki's masterwork. The story is sprawling, complex, and detailed, and the characters well drawn and memorable. Nausicaa herself aside even, one of my enduring favourite literary characters is Kushana.

A quick review of the release/edition and not the books themselves, because it just goes without saying that you should get Nausicaa. It's so good.

Viz did an amazing job with this release. The hardcovers are durable and beautiful, they just feel very solid. Reading each volume one after another is seamless and makes me wonder how anyone could have done it before this release.

On top of having all the books collected into two awesome hardcovers, there's Miyazaki's gorgeous watercolor artwork thrown in as a bonus alongside a map and a beautiful poster all kept safely inside of the box.

Great job, Viz. This was an excellent release. More publishers could learn from this one.

Years ago I had purchased the seven (7) paper back books, I've purchase this hardback edition for my daughter who has become of Studio Ghibli fan girl. Nausicaa was her first non-Disney princess. We've worn out two DVDs and are working on wearing out a blu-ray. Now that she is in High School I am excited to see her reaction to deeper, fuller rendition of a story she loves so much.

Just as I point newcomers to "Grave of the Fireflies" as a seminal example of good anime (as opposed to the stereotypes between Pokemon and Dragonball), I would say Nausicaa is the one manga any newcomer to the medium should read. Well, or just anyone who appreciates imagery and text. This series contains great textual content as well as highly detailed drawing; there's nothing cartoonish or comic about it.

Make no mistake: The story of Nausicaa has an epic scope. It's highly complex and not appropriate for children unless they can grasp the finer points and are able to comprehend its darker tones, since this is a complete story from beginning to end that requires good memory.

It features several major cultures involved with their own civil unrest and break-off groups, ruthless war and its effects on civilians, life and death, military maneuvering, political intrigue, enemies who are not merely enemies, religious oppression, post-apocalypse, a bit of science fiction, and at the core--one of Miyazaki's favorite topics--environmentalism. All of this is given life and meshed together into a grimy mess of opposing yet sympathetic human characterizations.

While the series does feature one of my less favorite tropes ("the chosen one" hero), it's spun in that our main character is a girl capable of many things from the very onset. For a series written in the '80s to early '90s, that's rather interesting. She's no Disney princess.

In terms of art, the air battles and action scenes are convincing with great perspective, and the entire setting (backgrounds, from ground cover to smoky skies) is tremendously detailed to add depth and a solidly immersive look. Much of the sketchy detailing has to do with Miyazaki using pencil instead of pen inking. The world of Nausicaa is quite alive on the pages.

I wish I could say something about the quality of translation, which can be hit or miss in so much imported media, but I'm not fluent in Japanese to make an assessment. It does read well, though ("There's not much difference between being at the mercy of desire and being a prisoner of hate"). The cast is strong, both male and female of different ages, and spans vast geographical territories, so this should appeal to many readers.

I wouldn't say it's perfect, but if there was only one manga (series) I could make people read, it would be Nausicaa.

P.S.: Anyone who has seen Studio Ghibli's other works will recognize quite a few elements.

I have wanted this manga for years, so when I heard that Viz was re-releasing it in this two-volume set, I immediately pre-ordered it. And I was not disappointed. The box itself is beautiful and well-constructed, and the two volumes are absolutely gorgeous. The set also includes a small, double-sided poster, perfect for any fan of the series.

I owned and treasured the old Viz three-volume set for years, but after visiting Japan and seeing the big, beautiful presentation of the original trades for Nausicaa I was sad there wasn't anything like that available in English. Now there is, and it's more beautiful than I could have wished! Such love and care has been shown to these two volumes I couldn't believe it. Until the silver-leafed, tooled-leather-bound, rosemary-scented single-volume edition I'll have to make myself someday, this about as good as it gets. A must-buy for not just Miyazaki fans, but all who love graphic novels and post-apocalyptic stories of depth, beauty and hope.

It should be understood from the outset that Hayao Miyazaki is an unparalleled genius and all his works are treasures.

I will also say that the book bindings and the protective box for this collectible edition are very sturdy and elegant.

But I can't give this five stars, and here's why:

I have to knock off a quarter of a star for the awkward right to left format. Yes, I know, the original manga was in a right to left format, that's standard for Japanese books. But it's unnecessary. The technology exists to flip the images and have the layout formatted left to right.

I have to knock off a quarter of a star for the fact that the sound effects are in katakana, rather than the Roman alphabet. I don't know what the reason was, whether it was laziness or impatience or some legal technicality, but to anyone who argues that this is somehow stylistically preferable, I must say that I emphatically disagree. And an index at the end of the book explaining what all those sound effects were is just not good enough.

And lastly I must knock off half a star for the transcription of the translation, and the lack of sufficient copy-editing. A good translation is a labor of love, and I think David Lewis and Toren Smith at Studio Proteus did put their hearts into their translation work. Unfortunately, the letterer and the editor for this edition were not so passionate, and so we get mistakes such as Princess Nausicaä saying "I'm going to take care of Chikuku." The correct words would be "I'm going." (a farewell) and "Take care of Chikuku." (this is a command to Charuka, in whose care Chikuku has been left.) Other similar mistakes pop up sporadically and diminish the reader's enjoyment.

One last nitpicker's note, though I don't know if this mistake is unique to this edition. In the intro, the Sea of Corruption is referred to as being composed of bacteria. This is incorrect, over and over throughout the story, the Sea of Corruption is described as being composed of fungi. Bacteria and fungi are entirely different types of life -- bacteria are prokaryotic while fungi are eukaryotic like plants, animals and amoebas.

I had the Viz editions, once, which came out over a decade ago. They were gorgeous, nearly flawless. I exhibited poor judgment in not storing them as carefully as I should have, and they were destroyed by mold. (Ironic!)

If you are thinking of purchasing this two book set, I think you deserve to know ahead of time that it isn't perfect.

Everything else you might read, about how Nausicaä is one of the greatest epic science fiction works ever made, is still true. Miyazaki has made so many movies aimed at children or families, it may come as a shock to some that he can also explore darker and more adult realms, featuring spiritual, ecological, feminist, and anti-war themes.

Im not going to review the story here. Im gonna review the quality of the print and the publisher as I read the original translations years back. Two huge hard cover books (dictionary size) with a case is what you should expect of a manga of such epic proportion. Compare this with Viz's separate vol print the pages are gonna be smaller since the separate prints are the size of a magazine each, so if you want a bigger print I suggest go for that instead. The translation from Viz is slightly different than the original and is more consistent and solid over all. However my main problem with this publication is that Viz censored or cut out a few pages to preserve their Teen rating on the manga. I am quite annoyed by this since those details really pops out in terms of reading the story. Overall its a good reprint but for the hardcore readers you would be quite annoyed by Viz has done.

Far exceeded my expectations. Hands down one of the best comics ever created. I used to have the 4 volume perfect collection edition but unfortunately I lost the set when I moved to my new place. After I heard there was a 2 volume hardbound edition I jumped at the chance to get it, and of course the store didn't let me down. An absolute must have in any comic book collection, the artwork alone makes these books a modern masterpiece!

This impressive deluxe hardcover collection features the complete "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind" ('Kaze no Tani no Naushika') epic illustrated by internationally acclaimed film director and animator Hayao Miyazaki.

It features a slipcase box with 2 mammoth-sized hardcover tomes that collects the entire run (vols. 1-7). The pages are impressive as the illustrations are presented in sepia-toned hues, presenting to readers the story as how it originally appeared when it first came out. There are a few colored pages, and an exclusive 2-sided fold-out full-color poster.

The packaging of this collection is much similar to DC Comics' Absolute Edition books (e.g.,Absolute Batman: The Long Halloween). Kudos to Viz Media for publishing this magnificent collection in this deluxe format!

For die-hard manga fans and for casual readers who enjoy good ol' classic adventure epics, this collection is highly recommended. Well worth the price!

This box set contains two thick hardbound books, about 1.75 inches each. The covers contain the same artwork as the covers for the first two of the popular seven volume edition. Despite being large, the quality of paper and binding is fine, unlike some collected editions of works.

The translation is the same as in the seven volume version published by VIZ, with onomatopoeia untranslated and an index in the back. The printing is also still dark brown, rather than black.

Also included is a poster of about 11.5 x 16.5 inches, one side horizontally and the other vertically positioned.

If you want a copy of this graphic novel, then this is a fair, well priced edition.

Looks Great, story is great so far, very impressed

The only reason I took off two stars is that my package came in and it damaged one corner of the book and case (looks to be a significant impact that dented the box). If you are going to spend that much money on this set, please make sure the packaging is appropriate.

Loved this book in the 90s when it came out and it still makes me cry with the themes and the coming of age story. My biggest complaint is the books are too big to read properly and I keep wishing I could just load this up on a Kindle.

I'm going to tell you what I wish I'd read before I ordered this.

The translation is bad.

The books are beautiful. Large and hardbound. In other editions I had to squint to make out details. These are a joy to look at.

But the translation is bad. I'd read the Viz version before--the version published chapter by chapter--and fell in love with the it. I'd assumed this was the same translation. Not so.

This one is serviceable, it tells the story, but it is clunky and at times awkward. It is also difficult to tell who is talking sometimes. And sound effects are never translated.

The other version has some poetry to it, some life, pathos, and grandeur. And I don't remember all sound effects being translated, but I'm sure many were.

If you want to have a beautiful book to look at because you already love the manga, get this.

If you want to have something you can share with others, so that they too fall in love with it, get the Viz versions.

I wish someone had told me this before I bought it! I hope it helps you.

This is almost perfect, the actual books are top quality the paper, binding and print is excellent. There is just one major problem, the sounds effects. All the dialog is in English but the sounds "Booms", "Klangs" and animals sounds are all in Japanese. Considering I bought the English version it would have been nice to get the full translation as in the past versions. It is like matching a movie in close caption when I read it.

First of all, Nausicca is an amazing story. It take place in creative and fantastic era, yet one that is very relevant to the world that we live in today. The back ground, and lore is well flushed out, and everything connects and make sense. The author paints a journey of humanity through all our flaws and centers on the odyssey of a single very human character that struggles through all of that, trying to do the right thing in a world where there are no correct answers, and where even the best intentions are imperfect.

Note that there is a movie by the same name that captures roughly the 1st 25% of the full story in a altered, simplified and much more happy way. The movie is good and worth watching, and is well ahead of its time considering it is done in 1984. However, the book has a much deeper story that is more thought provoking.

The only grip about this is that the sound effects are un-translated, and you'll have to go to the back of the box to find an index. This isn't necessary but does distract from the enjoyment a bit. If you google around, you'll be able to find PDF version with translated SFX. I actually completed the PDF version before buying this box set in support.

Great collection for a Miyzaki fan. I was pretty surprised of how big the books were. I thought the books were going to be about manga size. As for the books itself, the hardcover is very very sturdy and the pages are nicely printed and not fragile like recycled paper. The collection had also included a small poster which was unfortunately folded. I recommend this book set for people who are a fan of Miyazaki.

This two-volume box set is an absolute MUST have for anyone who loved the movie (like myself). The movie is about 1/100th of the full blown story, and all of your favorite characters have their own unique stories that was barely touched in the movie. And if you liked Nausicaa herself from the movie, you'll love her like a daughter/sister in this Manga set. Trust me, you won't be disappointed.

The display box is beautiful, sturdy, and stands on its own without bookends. It weighs about 8lbs total. The art is stunning (especially the color art). It reads right to left like the original. The larger size makes this manga even more enjoyable because it is much easier to see what is going on in each panel.
