Working with Don Mallick for 18 years and following the projects that the pilots of NASA Dryden Flight Research Center made reading this book a must. Having him explain the projects in terms that an accountant could understand, I knew that I would also be able to understand his book, not so technical like he could have written.

Somewhat difficult reading unless you are a pilot. You do learn more than you probably want to know about flight problems in all the current planes, ones being tested and the difficult lunar landing module. Good luck.

Excellent reading for someone interested in air and space technology and in those who contributed to it. The photographs reproduce no better than fair; their captions poor--to be expected in an e-reader. At the end of the book is a useful glossary. To keep it handy, open the book, search for "Glossary", go to the first page of it and bookmark it.

An astounding complete continuous one man's story covering contact with aviation, containing early fascination, student learning, engineering education, development, opening the envelop, mishaps, victories, rubbing elbows with the greats.
The only competitor is Jimmy Doolittle's autobiography.

A worthwhile read, it gives a different perspective on the mind of a pilot who is seeking technical perfection. I am always interested in the mind set of these people, not just their technical achievements This book addresses each very well.

Met my expectations! But would have been great if Author took us a little further into the cockpit, explained in little more detail of the experience in flying some of the worlds most famous aircraft. Maybe described the smell of Kerosene just a little further.

A comprehensive review of a research pilots career covering the innovative age of airplane design. Recommend the book to any person interested in aviation history regarding NASA' s contribution to aeronautics.

Donald Mallick has some very good assessments and descriptions of aircraft he flew during his time in the early 1950's Navy, and then with NACA/NASA, first at Langley, and then at Edwards. Some of those types that he gives more than a passing mention are: Navy SNJ Texan, F6F Hellcat, TO-1(navy's version of the f-80), F2H Banshee, F9F-6 Cougar, JRF Goose, F8U-3 Super Crusader, XB-70 Valkyrie, YF-12/SR-71 Blackbird, and the Lunar Landing Research Vehicle(LLRV).
Here are some excellent descriptive experiences of what it was like to fly some very famous, and not so famous, rare experimental aircraft that there are few descriptions else where. And what it was like to work with many other test pilot personalities and programs, like Joe Walker, Fitz Fulton, and the X-15 program.

Sober, intelligent and fascinating account of how aviation went from props to Mach 5 and the moon. Pilots will recognize and salute the low-key but powerful decscriptions, and the general reader will be initiated into a world of hard work and high adventure.

Interesting read. Test pilots must be a little crazy...interesting read and I thought my mountain climbing could be a bit insane at times. Well worth reading...sometimes a bit technical BUT better because of it.

This book was interesting to me because of the time I spent in the US Navy. Most of the places Mr Mallick talks about is where I spent my time,it brought back wonderful memories of good times and friends.
