Repetitive but I very decent read especially for those of African decent or those with melanin. Has anyone tried the one meal a day protocol?it sounds very extreme. I agree with many aspects of the book and many of them I don't agree with.

This book was insightful. I don't entirely agree with all the teachings in this book, but it has some nutrional habits that can approve your well being.
I wish the author would have been more thorough with why we should eat certain foods and why they are good for us.

Peace. Good read for foundation of health. Not everyone may agree with or eat the foods mentioned. B.U.T. Let us make a conscious decision on what we eat and how much. In these days where "health care" appears to be an issue let us care for ourselves medication free.

This book has set the trend for today's nutritionists on how to eat to live; but without the recognition. The Honorable Elijah Muhammad needs to be referenced and recognized for being ahead of his times if one wanted to prolong their life.Great book!

This is filled with tips for eating healthy. I gave it two stars because it repeated the same information over and over thus becoming very redundant in its message about how to eat to live. It is amazing that many of the things Elijah Muhammad mentions in his book is still very true today. I would have liked to see a clear menu of food items that can be eaten other than simply saying it is safe to eat as Jewish people eat.

Not sure who is responsible here, but, I brought this book as a gift and was recently informed that the pages are incomplete. Incomplete? Well, the copy is missing from the right side of every page. The recipient of this book hilariously tried filling-in-the-blank words before giving up a few pages in.

Despite those who publicly attack the Hon. Elijah Muhammad, but privately lift from his teachings, the Truth ultimately wins. This is evidenced in this book, and in the lives of those who choose to truly apply these teachings. You don't get the rewards if you don't do the work, and one of the first works of the Black man and woman of America is to develop and maintain clean, healthy, disciplined choices, habits and lifestyles. This book, along with all of the other books written by the HEM, is essential.

I have very mixed feelings, the book actually has some great information particularly when you consider that a lot of the information provided is well ahead of its time such as the dangers of tobacco, fluoride, the dangers of pesticides, and the book suggest a plant based or vegan lifestyle or as close to it as possible all of this was unheard of in his time. However the information is laced with biased racially charged opinions, myth, and fiction. The information is also incredibly REPETITIVE. I can tell you the jist of the entire book and save you some time, money and frustration. 1. eat once a day, 2.do not eat pork. To be honest I do not feel this should have been a book, perhaps an article, because the info was constantly being repeated VERBATIM!!!

The Honorable Elijah Muhammad does it again in educating us on how to maintain a proper diet so you can live a long, healthy life! I was totally amazed to learn what foods are actually harmful to your digestive system. I spent all of my adult life trying my best to “eat right”, thinking I had it all figured out.

Then a new friend gave me a copy of How To Eat To Live: Book-1 to read. I was shocked to learn about the harmful effects that some of my most favorite foods can cause the human digestive system! What you THINK is healthy in today’s food menus is really NOT! In less than two-days I was obsessed with purchasing my own copy, and thanking my new friend to the high heavens for caring enough to share this with me!

I also want to stress to you all, the importance of "saying grace" over your food so you can get the Divine Blessing of healthy nutrients & protection as you eat. Please get in the habit of doing this at every meal & every time you put something even as small as a mint or gum in your mouth. Chemicals & poisons are in nearly everything we eat today & you need the protection from God ("Allah" in Arabic) to keep you safe from them.

You won’t regret buying this book. Believe me, it will help you see food in a whole new life-saving way. Turns out, you truly are what you eat! That's not just an expression. Thank God for the Honorable Elijah Muhammad. =)

Elijah Muhammad's dietary instruction (found primarily in his How to Eat To Live books) was ahead of its time. Readers must bear in mind that these dietary laws, admonished to Nation of Islam (N.O.I) followers and suggested to Blacks in general, were taught to Elijah Muhammad in the early 30's, decades before the health food craze began. We are just now beginning today, as a global community, to catch up with some of the dietary suggestions outlined in these books more than a generation ago. Such warnings against eating red meats and synthetic foods such as, margarine, refined sugar, white flour, white rice, and fast foods (popular restrictions among health conscious people today); were outlined in these books ages ago. To credit Elijah Muhammad, Black Muslims were eating health food before it was called "Health Food."

How To Eat To Live recommends whole grains, whole wheat, brown rice, and plenty of vegetables and herbs; the stable foods of health conscious gurus. The navy bean, emerges from these pages as king of the legumes and a vital supplement to a healthful diet.

Today, we see a trend of middle-aged people racing the clock and choosing vegetarian diets for better health. How to Eat To Live crossed that finish line long ago also. Moreover, most vegetarians and health conscious people do not use drugs, smoke any kind of leaf, or drink intoxicants at all. Well, yeah; that's covered here also, making the lessons life-saving as well as money-saving.

The knowledge of how to eat to live is a big part of Elijah Muhammad's teachings and probably more important than even some of his followers recognize. Anyone striving for better health should experiment with this diet. The Messenger highly recommended a specific daily regimen accommodating the right foods, which may be a daunting challenge for many, but you don't have to become a Muslim to eat like one. Just eating the right food and rejecting the wrong food is a start. How many know that the much ridiculed (but very popular) bean pie, a wonderfully nutritious and delicious desert, is an Elijah Muhammad exclusive creation? Today, commercial bean pies are sold everywhere; but women in the N.O.I specialized this dish in their home kitchens long, long ago.

How to Eat To Live is a great read as well as a wholesome and refreshing educational repast. Be open minded, because a profound spiritual message underscores these dietary lessons.

This book will dramatically change the way you view food. It will give you a new outlook on the importance and dangers of what we consume. Really take this book and apply it to your life and you will see a change especially for women battling weight problems.

He wrote the da** truth! Elijah was a hypocrite, which is why he probably died from congestive heart failure, didn't abide by his own standards. Nonetheless, he wrote and spoke the truth. So...

I read excerpts and will come back and review the book more thoroughly, but from what I could tell, he was well ahead of his time and the info is good. I wouldn't do everything recommended, but the basics, such as raw foods, no pork, cleansing the body etc are great starting points.

I also recommend Dr. Laila Afrika's book and Medisin by Dr. Scott Whitaker

I think this book is more relevant in the context of history and understanding aspects of the black power movement/Nation of Islam than a nutritional guide. However, I do know of some really youthful and healthy looking adults who swear by it. However, the author himself did die of congestive heart failure.

Basically, he recommends eating one meal a day, fasting, and emphasizing fresh fruits and vegetables. Refined grains and sugar should be avoided. Swine and intoxicants are forbidden. Some foods he seems to forbid perhaps just because of their history as Southern slave food or "soul food," like collard greens and black eyed peas, which are probably actually not unhealthy.

A recommended read for everyone who wants to learn more about US history!

The Honorable Elijah Muhammad's dietary advise was far ahead of its time. If his dietary instructions had been followed at the time it was first given many of the diseases that plague the African-American community today would not exist.

Sahih International
Prohibited to you are dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah , and [those animals] killed by strangling or by a violent blow or by a head-long fall or by the goring of horns, and those from which a wild animal has eaten, except what you [are able to] slaughter [before its death], and those which are sacrificed on stone altars, and [prohibited is] that you seek decision through divining arrows. That is grave disobedience. This day those who disbelieve have despaired of [defeating] your religion; so fear them not, but fear Me. This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion. But whoever is forced by severe hunger with no inclination to sin - then indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
This man is lying on Allah I challenge anyone to show me in the Qura'n where Allah forbids us to eat anything other than swine ,AND WHAT IS LISTED IN SURAH 5:3 THERE ARE THINGS THAT ELIJAH PROBITTED AND AE NOT PROHIBETTED BY ALLAH.

For those who want a deeper understanding of the Muslim culture, especially the Black Muslim culture that was in vogue when Malcom X was alive. Although I won't follow the teachings of the "honorable" Elijah Muhammad, I will use them as a reference when trying to understand the history of African-Americans in this country.

Please, send your money to a more worth while cause. This book was 118 pages of the same messages over and over and over and over...... Allow me to sum it up for you: Lesson 1: Don't eat pork; Lesson 2: Only eat 1x every 24-72 hours; Lesson 3: White people are your enemy; Lesson 4: Only eat what I say to eat;

These lessons are repeated on practically EVERY single page! Don't believe me? Waste your money and see for yourself. And by the way, if a person could actually live to be hundreds of years old by following the methods in this book, then why did E. Muhammad die at the age of 78?

Yes, this man is worthy of respect...but the book is not.

I learned so much about western eating habits from this book, as well as proper nutrition to get the most out of your mind, body, and spirit. Really got me thinking about giving my digestive system a rest, and when and what to eat.
